Export Cauliflower Quality Improvement 1996 - 1998, Vynka Mcveigh, Rachel Lancaster, Dennis Phillips, S. C. Tan

Horticulture research reports

Final report for the project VG 94043 January 1996 to December 1998.

This three year study is the first conducted in Australia which has evaluated and assessed the postharvest chain for export cauliflowers. From harvesting to transportation to the wharf, the project has identified a range of improved practices to ensure optimum quality of cauliflower at the destination market. The project has also examined cauliflower agronomy issues such as the effect of seed weight, seedling weight and phosphorus nutrition and placement on yield and harvest period, as well as variation in potting mix composition within a seedling cell tray.

An Economic Analysis Of The Threat Of An Exotic Disease On Agriculture: The Case Of Sheep Pox In Western Australia, Nhu Che, Tom Kompas Jun 1999

An Economic Analysis Of The Threat Of An Exotic Disease On Agriculture: The Case Of Sheep Pox In Western Australia, Nhu Che, Tom Kompas

Biosecurity published reports

Sheep pox is an acute disease that causes heavy losses due to high sheep mortality, costly eradication programs and ongoing problems with trade restrictions for many countries around the world. Australia until now has been unaffected, and although the risk of disease entry may be very slight, one case of sheep pox outbreak could cost the Western Australian economy as much as $50 million in damages, mostly from the trade disruption losses ( over the 21-month period of trading bans). The introduction of a Serology Test Program may reduce that amount by $35 million due to a shortening of the …

Horticulture Research Report 1994 - 1998, Frank Wise Institute, Kununurra, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia, D. Robinson, M. Howes, R. Randell

Horticulture research reports

This report summarises horticultural research, development and extension activities undertaken by staff from the Kununurra District Office during the period 1993 to 1998 and reported annually at the Frank Wise Institute Horticultural Research Review. The range and extent of activities presented and supported by Agriculture Western Australia with industry collaboration indicates the importance of horticulture in the economies of the Kimberley Region and Western Australia. Further support by funding bodies and agribusiness, and collaboration with other research organizations is also acknowledged. Since the early 1980's, horticultural output and value of production from the Ord River Irrigation Area (ORIA) have risen …

A Snapshot Of Horticulture Western Australia, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia Jan 1999

A Snapshot Of Horticulture Western Australia, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Horticulture published reports

Western Australia's horticultural industry is one of 'the fastest growing primary production sectors. Gross value of production in 1996/97 was $383 million dollars according to Australian Bureau of Statistics data. However, we know that these data underestimate the value of the industry by about 12 per cent for the fruit sector and by over 50 per cent for the vegetable sector. The true GVP is closer to $500 million.

Good quality land and water resources in areas suitable for horticultural production are available for industry expansion. Some of the traditional enterprises on the irrigable land in the south-west are becoming …

Bulletin 4387 - Women In Agriculture In Western Australia 1999, Agriculture Western Australia

Bulletins 4000 -

WESTERN Australian women in agriculture contribute huge economic, social and community benefits to industry, to the rural sector, and to the State overall. That this contribution is not fully acknowledged, is perhaps due to the lack of clear data; many economic or social measures do not disaggregate data by gender, despite women's and men's roles being very different. Other measures are based on outdated assumptions about how work is done, and by whom.

Western Australian Agriculture - Key Achievements 1998 - 1999, Agriculture Western Australia

Farm Systems and Economics published reports

During 1998/99 Western Australia's agricultural industries continued to build on an enviable international reputation for a professional approach to business and a proven track record in producing and supplying food and fibre products of consistently high ·quality.

A global increase in demand for food and fibre, changing consumer behaviour, and further world trade liberalisation offer great challenges and opportunities for the export of Western Australian agricultural produce. Agriculture Western Australia has responded to these changes with increased emphasis on quality assurance and supply chain management to focus on specific consumer and end-user requirements, and to improve alliances between producers, processors …

A Case Study Of Bioengineering In America: Profits, Risks And Standards Of Value In The Commercialization Of Monsanto Company's Newleaf Potato, Bridget Lyons, Teresa Ralabate, Nadhim Frangul

WCBT Faculty Publications

Last year, approximately 45 million acres of American farmland were planted with crops that had been genetically engineered to either produce their own pesticides, or withstand herbicides. The long and short-term effects of this biotechnology on humans and the environment, are being studied, but remain unknown. Leading the way in the field of bioengineered crops is the Missouri-based Monsanto Company. Monsanto believes that current agricultural practices are inconsistent with sustainable development. The NewLeaf potato is one of three products Monsanto has created to feed the growing world population. The genetically engineered crop produces, in every cell of the plant, a …

Export Carrot Production Capability Study, Dennis Phillips Apr 1998

Export Carrot Production Capability Study, Dennis Phillips

Horticulture research reports

A survey was conducted by personal interview of nearly 80 per cent of Western Australian export carrot growers to determine the range of business profiles and production practices prevailing in the industry in 1996-97. The study provided significant information which the industry can use to guide future development and to benchmark its performance.

The industry was characterised by a high level of Australian ownership and a healthy mix of family and corporate ownership and vertical integration. Capital investment in production was high, potentially inhibiting new entrants to the industry.

Threats to future industry growth were identified in an ageing management …

Guidelines Of Activities And Costs Of Establishing A Vineyard For Winegrapes, Alex Sas, Roslyn Hanna, Diana Fisher

Viticulture published reports

This document is intended as a starting point for those interested in growing wine grapes and highlights the management techniques, labour requirements, and costs involved with such an enterprise. Budgeting methods are used to determine the profitability of investing in a 10 ha vineyard in the south-west of Western Australia. The document should not be used as a recipe with which to develop a vineyard, but rather as a guide.

Establishing a vineyard involves a large initial investment with no returns until usually three years after planting. Factors such as site selection, environment, seasonal conditions and management, will all affect …

Production Practices Of Arkansas Beef Cattle Producers, Michael P. Popp, Lucas D. Parsch Jan 1998

Production Practices Of Arkansas Beef Cattle Producers, Michael P. Popp, Lucas D. Parsch

AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins

This report contains information from a 1996 survey on production practices of Arkansas beef cattle producers. While several studies have been completed on the profitability of retained ownership of beef cattle, few empirical data are available on production practices of cow/calf and stocker operations in Arkansas. This report shows that there are some differences in production methods across operation types. Further, the report summarizes demographic characteristics of Arkansas cow/calf and stocker operations. The results of this study can be particularly helpful in providing the needed data for studying the potential economic impact of feeding weaned calves to heavier weights in …
