Conceptual Nature Of The Corporate Income Tax, Hugo Nurnberg Jan 2009

Conceptual Nature Of The Corporate Income Tax, Hugo Nurnberg

Accounting Historians Journal

This paper examines a long-standing controversy about the conceptual nature of the corporate income tax: whether it is an expense, a loss, a distribution of income, or some anomalous item. That controversy reflects in part different theories of the accounting entity. Despite several authoritative pronouncements stating or implying that the tax is an expense, and despite an extensive discussion in the academic and professional literature, the controversy has never been fully resolved. Additionally, the tax is not characterized as an expense in corporate financial reports. The FASB's conceptual framework does not resolve this controversy, nor does the impending joint FASB-IASB …

The Best Brains Of The Public Accounting World: The Restricted Membership Of The Army Accountancy Advisory Panel, 1942-1945, Phillip E. Cobbin

Accounting Historians Journal

The events threatening to engulf Australia as the Japanese imperial forces continued their push through southeast Asia caused enormous concern for the Department of the Army as civilian and uniformed staff struggled to cope with large increases in manpower and expenditure responsibilities. The department moved, in January 1942, to create an expert panel of accountants to provide advice with a view to overcoming these problems. This paper focuses uniquely on a small group of individuals brought together for their expertise in accounting drawn exclusively from the practitioner ranks of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia. The paper draws attention …

Teaching Freshman Business Students Ethics: A Case Study, John Koeplin

Accounting

Making ethical decisions is important for both personal and business situations. This case study suggests a different approach to educating business students about ethics and personal character. By exposing beginning business students to personal and business dilemmas, requiring reflection papers on their experiences, debating business and political issues, and through other activities such as discussion various business ethical dilemmas, students will become more sensitive to ethical issues and ideally see character development as something directly related to their studies. Additionally, by having students take this course in their first year of undergraduate studies, this will affect the context and experience …

Accounting Conservatism In International Financial Reporting Standards And U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, Hang Minh Pham Jan 2009

Accounting Conservatism In International Financial Reporting Standards And U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, Hang Minh Pham

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

During the past five years, the number of US. citizens who own foreign securities has increased by thirty percent. This trend has led to the need for a uniform accounting system that would increase the comparability and consistency of financial statements across countries in the world. Today, over 100 countries have adopted International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) as their primary accounting system. The European Union required the use of IFRS in 2005. In the U.S., the Securities and Exchange Commission is considering the adoption of IFRS in 2014. IFRS and U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) are different in many …

Our World Flipped Upside Down, Julie Blanchette Jan 2009

Our World Flipped Upside Down, Julie Blanchette

Undergraduate Review

During the past decade, there have been increasing discussions between the Financial Accounting Standard Board (FASB) and the International Accounting Standard Board (IASB) regarding the harmonization of United States Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). What used to be talk is now becoming a reality. On October 29, 2002 FASB and the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) released the Memorandum of Understanding, which announced the significant steps that are being taken to converge the US and the International Accounting Standards. There are hopes for some parts of the convergence to be finalized by 2011, …

Business Faculty Publications

In this article, the academic and personal characteristics of Accounting faculty members at Colleges and Universities in the United States are analyzed to determine the demographics of the Accounting Professorate. Data on 12 variables were collected for the 2004-2005 academic year as a means of constructing a professional profile of the typical accounting professor teaching at today’s universities. Given that there are anticipated shortages of accounting faculty, this information should be of interest to students who are considering accounting as a major, those contemplating entering the profession, and those faculty members who are engaged in educating the next generation of …

Is There Predictive Value In The Words Managers Use? A Key Word Analysis Of The Annual Report's Management Discussion And Analysis., Gene Brooks Elrod

Accounting Dissertations - Archive

This study examines whether managers use linguistic style (i.e. optimistic and pessimistic tone) in the Management Discussion and Analysis (MD&A) section of the annual report to the SEC, Form 10-K, to provide information about expected future firm performance to the investors and whether market prices (investors) respond to these disclosures. Textual analysis software, Diction 5.0, is used to measure optimistic and pessimistic tone of MD&A for the year 2002 for 423 manufacturing firms. Previous research similar to this study found evidence that managers use linguistic style or tone to reveal information to financial statement users through their textual releases in …

Managers' Forecast Guidance In Earnings Surprises Around Employee Stock Option Reissues, Jin Dong Park Jan 2009

Managers' Forecast Guidance In Earnings Surprises Around Employee Stock Option Reissues, Jin Dong Park

Accounting Dissertations - Archive

Option repricing, the practice of canceling underwater options and reissuing options with a lower exercise price, has often been considered an effective mechanism to restore the incentive effects of stock options. Since December 15, 1998, the effective date of FIN No.44, firms have initiated option exchange program as a new form of repricing. Under the new option exchange program, most firms cancel underwater options on a specified date and then reissue options at the first business day that is six months and one day later in order to avoid variable accounting for option repricing. I conjecture that this feature of …

Is Sfas 142 A Good Opportunity For Firms To Manage Earnings?, Fu-Jen Hsiao Jan 2009

Is Sfas 142 A Good Opportunity For Firms To Manage Earnings?, Fu-Jen Hsiao

Accounting Dissertations - Archive

SFAS 142 eliminates the goodwill amortization and replaces it with an annual impairment test. This new accounting rule also provides the guidelines for firms to report their transition goodwill write-offs through a one-time below-the-line special item. After the one year transition period, any goodwill write-offs would be reported as operating expenses. This study analyzes the goodwill reporting behaviors in firms with in-process research and development (IPR&D firms) and examines whether IPR&D restated firms take advantage of this one-time below-the-line earnings management opportunity during the SFAS 142 transition period. In addition, this study examines the association between IPR&D firms' transition goodwill …

A Research Note On The Issue Of Non-Articulation And The Method Used To Calculate Net Operating Cash Flow, Terry J. Ward, Jon Woodruff, Benjamin P. Foster Jan 2009

A Research Note On The Issue Of Non-Articulation And The Method Used To Calculate Net Operating Cash Flow, Terry J. Ward, Jon Woodruff, Benjamin P. Foster

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Using a proxy for nonarticulation, prior researchers found evidence that many companies using the indirect method of reporting net cash flow from operations have a significant level of nonarticulation. The purpose of this study is to determine if companies using the direct method of reporting net cash flow from operations experience significantly lower levels of nonarticulation than companies that use the indirect method of reporting net cash flow from operations. Results show that companies using the direct method have significantly less nonarticulation than companies using the indirect method. This finding suggests that the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) should consider …

Interlinkages Between Equity, Currency, Precious Metals And Oil Markets: An Emphasis On Emerging Markets, Lucia Morales Jan 2009

Interlinkages Between Equity, Currency, Precious Metals And Oil Markets: An Emphasis On Emerging Markets, Lucia Morales

Other resources

This thesis examines the interlinkages between equity, currency, precious metals and oil markets. The study follows an international approach with a special focus on emerging markets in Europe, Asia and Latin America, but without forgetting the importance of the G-7 that represents the most developed markets. The present research also focuses on the existence of interlinkages between these markets and the currency, oil, and precious metals markets. The author of this thesis considered it appropriate to implement such an analysis due to the fact that the relationships between financial markets, currency markets and the above-mentioned commodities markets have not been …

The Association Between Data Intermediaries And Bond Rating Classification Model Prediction Accuracy, Pavani Tallapally Jan 2009

The Association Between Data Intermediaries And Bond Rating Classification Model Prediction Accuracy, Pavani Tallapally

Doctoral Dissertations

Kamstra et al. (2001) developed a bond rating classification model that was based on a similar model developed by Ederington (1985). While both studies use Moody's bond ratings as dependent variables, the studies differ with respect to the independent variable data source, that is, Kamstra et al. (2001) use financial statement data extracted from Moody's Industrial Manual (now known as Mergent) while Ederington (1985) uses financial statement data extracted from Compustat. Given this, and given the divergent results of the two studies, the following question must be addressed: Do different data sources yield models that differ considerably with respect to …

The Impact Of Cultural Environment On Entry-Level Auditors’ Abilities To Perform Analytical Procedures, James F. Sander, Susan B. Hughes, Scott D. Higgs, Charles P. Cullinan

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

We focus on the impact of three of Hofstede’s cultural dimensions, power distance, uncertainty avoidance, and individualism, on the results of analytical procedures conducted by entry-level auditors in Mexico and the U.S. Analytical procedures are ideal for this research as they require auditors to use professional judgment and appropriate levels of professional skepticism, abilities related to all three cultural characteristics. We find no other study investigating the impact of culture on the application of auditing procedures similar across the studied cultures.

We find cultural characteristics do not affect the participants’ abilities to predict income statement balances, but they may influence …

Critical Accounting Policy And Estimate Disclosures: Company Response To The Evolving Sec Guidance, Susan B. Hughes, James F. Sander, Jillian K. Snyder

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

In late 2001, soon after numerous financial reporting failures including the much publicized demise of Enron, the SEC began a series of initiatives to improve critical accounting policy (CAP) and critical accounting estimate disclosures included within the MD&A section of Form 10-K. The first announcement, in the form of cautionary guidance, was issued in December 2001. This was followed by a Proposed Rule in 2002, and additional disclosure guidance near the end of 2003. Combined, the guidance required companies to provide information that would help investors understand the impact of estimates, accounting policies and external factors on financial results. Through …

Qualitative Information In Annual Reports & The Detection Of Corporate Fraud : A Natural Language Processing Perspective, Sunita Goel Jan 2009

Qualitative Information In Annual Reports & The Detection Of Corporate Fraud : A Natural Language Processing Perspective, Sunita Goel

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

High profile cases of fraudulent financial reporting such as those that occurred at Enron and WorldCom have shaken public confidence in the U.S. financial reporting process and have raised serious concerns about the roles of auditors, regulators, and analysts in financial reporting. In order to address these concerns and restore public confidence, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) of 2002 was enacted. However, SOX has not lived up to its promise. Numerous cases of fraudulent financial reporting have surfaced in the post-SOX era. So far, the major thrust of research has been on examining fraud that has already been discovered. This dissertation …

Predicting Patients’ Use Of Provider-Delivered E-Health: The Role Of Facilitating Conditions, E. Vance Wilson, Nancy K. Lankton Jan 2009

Predicting Patients’ Use Of Provider-Delivered E-Health: The Role Of Facilitating Conditions, E. Vance Wilson, Nancy K. Lankton

Accounting Faculty Research

This chapter presents a new rational-objective (R-O) model of e-health use that accounts for effects of facilitating conditions as well as patients’ behavioral intention. An online questionnaire measured patients’ behavioral intention to use a new e-health application as well as proxy measures of facilitating conditions that assess prior use of and structural need for health services. A second questionnaire administered three months later collected patients’ self-reported use of e-health during the intervening period. The new model increased predictions of patients’ e-health use (measured in R2) by more than 300% over predictions based upon behavioral intention alone, and all measured factors …

WCBT Faculty Publications

As the international economic landscape has become increasingly integrated, the argument for the development of uniform global accounting standards now exists. In an effort to achieve this objective, the Financial Accounting Standards Board, as part of the ongoing Convergence Project with the International Accounting Standards Board, released groundbreaking accounting standards, FAS157 & FAS159, in 2006 and 2007, respectively. Modeled after an international accounting standard, these standards pertain to the use of fair value accounting (FVA), and are the first of their kind as they provide a definition of FVA and an option to expand its use to certain financial instruments. …

Accurals Quality And Price Synchronicity, Joseph Atkins Johnston Jan 2009

Accurals Quality And Price Synchronicity, Joseph Atkins Johnston

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study examines the relation between accruals quality and price synchronicity, a measure of the relative amount of firm-specific information reflected in price. Higher accruals quality imply better quality earnings news, hence, more firm-specific information is incorporated into price for firms with higher accruals quality. More firm-specific information reduces price synchronicity, hence, we hypothesize a negative relation between accruals quality and price synchronicity. On the other hand, literature shows that accruals quality reduces idiosyncratic volatility which tends to be negatively correlated with price synchronicity. If the latter effects dominate the relation between accruals quality and price synchronicity, we should observe …
