The research question investigated how Nigerian bank managers implement corporate governance regulations in the face of a multiplicity of regulations. The conceptual framework was grounded in …

Crop Insurance Strategies For Mitigating Net Underwriting Losses, Kennedy K. Kitur Jan 2018

Crop Insurance Strategies For Mitigating Net Underwriting Losses, Kennedy K. Kitur

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Crop insurance is an essential risk management tool for America's agricultural producers because a single crop failure or disastrous year can eliminate the results of multiple years of profitability. Crop insurance is designed to provide financial protection to farmers; however, insurance managers who lack managerial underwriting strategies disrupt companies to the point of financial distress. Self-insurance and self-protection theory were the conceptual frameworks for this single-case study to explore successful strategies that insurance managers used to mitigate net underwriting losses. Four insurance and senior strategic managers from an insurance company in the midwestern United States were recruited through a purposeful …

Strategies For Reducing Corporate Accountants' Turnover Through Implementing Workplace Flexibility, Elizabeth Nwoseh-Streeter

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Flexibility in the workplace is no longer perceived as a benefit to employees but as a requirement for organizations to remain competitive. Financial compensation alone may be insufficient to encourage employee retention. The purpose of this qualitative, single case study was to explore the strategies that corporate accounting and finance leaders implement to promote workplace flexibility for increasing accountants' retention. The conceptual framework for this study was Karasek's demand control support framework. The research sample consisted of 6 corporate accounting and finance leaders who had a history of successfully implementing a workplace flexibility program. Data analysis consisted of compiling the …

How Does Destination Social Responsibility Contribute To Environmentally Responsible Behaviour? A Destination Resident Perspective, Lujun Su, Songshan (Sam) Huang, Joanna Pearce Jan 2018

How Does Destination Social Responsibility Contribute To Environmentally Responsible Behaviour? A Destination Resident Perspective, Lujun Su, Songshan (Sam) Huang, Joanna Pearce

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Based on stakeholder theory and social exchange theory, this study developed an integrated model to demonstrate that destination social responsibility (DSR) influences tourism impacts (both positive and negative impacts), overall community satisfaction, and both directly and indirectly influences resident environmentally responsible behaviour (ERB). The model was examined using a sample of 453 residents living on the Gulangyu Island, a famous island tourism destination of Xiamen, China. Results show that DSR enhances residents’ perception of positive tourism impacts, improves overall community satisfaction and contributes to resident ERB. However, the effect of DSR on negative tourism impacts was not significant. Thus, positive …

Chinese Outbound Travel: Understanding The Socioeconomic Drivers, Songshan (Sam) Huang, Xiang Wei Jan 2018

Chinese Outbound Travel: Understanding The Socioeconomic Drivers, Songshan (Sam) Huang, Xiang Wei

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This study used a national sample (N = 36,490) of Chinese urban residents to examine the relationship between outbound travel intention and some key demographic, economic, and geographic variables. Findings indicate that education, income, and paid vacation days significantly predicted outbound travel intention. Compared to residents in Tier-4 cities in China, those in Tier-1, -2, and -3 cities had higher probability of choosing outbound travel by 13.1%, 30.9%, and 15.3%, respectively. This study draws meaningful connections between Chinese outbound tourism and the social and economic realities in China and offers an alternative approach to understanding Chinese outbound tourism.

Manager Sentiment And Stock Returns, Fuwei Jiang, Joshua A. Lee, Xiumin Martin, Guofu Zhou Jan 2018

Manager Sentiment And Stock Returns, Fuwei Jiang, Joshua A. Lee, Xiumin Martin, Guofu Zhou

Faculty Publications

This paper constructs a manager sentiment index based on the aggregated textual tone of corporate financial disclosures. We find that manager sentiment is a strong negative pre- dictor of future aggregate stock market returns, with monthly in-sample and out-of-sample R 2 s of 9.75% and 8.38%, respectively, which is far greater than the predictive power of other previously studied macroeconomic variables. Its predictive power is economically compa- rable and is informationally complementary to existing measures of investor sentiment. Higher manager sentiment precedes lower aggregate earnings surprises and greater aggre- gate investment growth. Moreover, manager sentiment negatively predicts cross-sectional stock returns, …

Proprietary Costs And Sealing Documents In Patent Litigation, Richard Frankel, Joshua A. Lee, Zawadi Lemayian Jan 2018

Proprietary Costs And Sealing Documents In Patent Litigation, Richard Frankel, Joshua A. Lee, Zawadi Lemayian

Faculty Publications

We study whether the sealing of a defendant’s judicial records during a patent lawsuit filing correlates with the defendant’s level of competition and disclosure. Courts permit sealing of judicial records when competitive damage outweighs the public interest in access to documents and records. We find that defendants with sealed judicial records have higher research and development (R&D), lower industry sales concentration, and more references to competition in their annual reports than defendants without sealed judicial records. We observe faster mean reversion of return on net operating assets when courts seal defendant records. The results suggest that sealing relates to archival …

Pushing The Future Back: The Impact Of Policy Uncertainty On The Market Pricing Of Future Earnings, Michael S. Drake, Michael A. Mayberry, Jaron H. Wilde Jan 2018

Pushing The Future Back: The Impact Of Policy Uncertainty On The Market Pricing Of Future Earnings, Michael S. Drake, Michael A. Mayberry, Jaron H. Wilde

Faculty Publications

We examine whether policy uncertainty triggered by presidential elections pushes the future back by reducing the extent to which current prices reflect information about future earnings. We estimate future earnings response coefficients (FERCs) for the years 1975– 2013, a period that covers ten presidential elections. We find that FERCs are significantly lower (by 11.8%) during presidential election years compared to other years. Additional analyses using pseudo election years, ex-ante polls, contract prices from the Iowa Electronic Political Market, and cross-sectional firm characteristics provide corroborating evidence that the lower FERCs during election years are related to policy uncertainty. We also investigate …

The Effects Of Quality Assurance Rating By Independent Assessors On External Auditors’ Judgment On Evaluation Of The Internal Auditor’S Work, Patcharee Treepornchaisak Jan 2018

The Effects Of Quality Assurance Rating By Independent Assessors On External Auditors’ Judgment On Evaluation Of The Internal Auditor’S Work, Patcharee Treepornchaisak

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The International standard on Auditing (ISA) 610, using the work of internal audit allows the external auditors to use internal audit's work and use internal auditors as assistants. But the external auditors have to evaluate internal audit function by themselves. The self-evaluation causes uncertainty in using IAF's work and using internal auditors as assistants. The prior studies identify that the three determinants of IAF quality are objectivity, competence and work performance. This study argues that the quality assurance report (QAR) help increase external auditors' reliance decision. Moreover a paper posits that the internal control environment is also related to the …

China's "Mercantilist" Government Subsidies, The Cost Of Debt And Firm Performance, Chu Yeong Lim, Jiwei Wang, Cheng (Colin) Zeng Jan 2018

China's "Mercantilist" Government Subsidies, The Cost Of Debt And Firm Performance, Chu Yeong Lim, Jiwei Wang, Cheng (Colin) Zeng

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

China has been adopting a “mercantilist” policy by lavishing massive government subsidies on Chinese firms. Using hand-collected subsidy data on Chinese listed companies, we find that firms receiving more subsidies tend to have a lower cost of debt. However, such firms fail to have superior financial performance. Instead, firms with more subsidies tend to be overstaffed, which demonstrates higher social performance. These results are mainly driven by non-tax-based subsidies rather than tax-based subsidies. Overall, our results suggest that the Chinese government uses non-tax-based subsidies to achieve its social policy objectives at the expense of firms’ profitability.

What Is The Cost Of Transparency? Does It Outweigh The Benefits Obtained From Greater Transparency?, Viktoria Wöhrer Jan 2018

What Is The Cost Of Transparency? Does It Outweigh The Benefits Obtained From Greater Transparency?, Viktoria Wöhrer

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

Currently, the scope of tax transparency is increasing on a global level. Taxpayers and third parties have to provide more information to both tax authorities and the general public. Increasing transparency should hamper both tax evasion and tax avoidance. The tax transparency initiatives should contribute to providing tax administrations with useful information for assessing tax risks and specifically targeting those issues in an audit. Greater transparency does however not only contribute to the combat against tax avoidance and tax evasion but also involves an increased degree of data gathering, reporting and information exchange either from taxpayers to tax authorities or …

Objective Or Subjective – Anti-Treaty Shopping Policy In Select Asian Jurisdictions In The Post-Beps World, Andy Baik, Matthias Petutschnig

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

BEPS Action 6 proposes two distinct anti abuse measures to be incorporated into the OECD Model Convention and subsequently into the various bilateral tax treaties: A Limitation on Benefits (LoB) clause and Principal Purpose Test (PPT). While both anti abuse measures are new to the OECD Model Convention, various countries around the world have implemented either LoB or PPT clauses or both into their tax treaties. This paper analyses the treaty network of eight Asian / Pacific jurisdictions (Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, and Taiwan) with respect to the anti-abuse measures employed in these treaties. The majority of …

Market Ambiguity And Individual Investor Information Demand, Rajib Hasan, Abdullah Kumas, Joyce Van Der Laan Smith Jan 2018

Market Ambiguity And Individual Investor Information Demand, Rajib Hasan, Abdullah Kumas, Joyce Van Der Laan Smith

Accounting Faculty Publications

We examine whether ambiguity in the market leads to an increase in information demand by individual investors. Drawing on the asset-pricing model proposed by Mele and Sangiorgi (2015), which incorporates market ambiguity, we measure individual information demand using daily Google searches and measure market ambiguity using a metric based on the market trades of institutional investors. We find that individual investors increase their information demand during periods of greater market ambiguity. We also provide evidence that information demand from individual investors spikes around earnings announcement days primarily when market uncertainty is driven by net-selling activity. Overall, these results suggest that …

A Study Of Long-Lived Asset Impairment Under U.S. Gaap And Ifrs Within The U.S. Institutional Environment, Philip K. Hong, Daniel Gyung Paik, Joyce Van Der Laan Smith Jan 2018

A Study Of Long-Lived Asset Impairment Under U.S. Gaap And Ifrs Within The U.S. Institutional Environment, Philip K. Hong, Daniel Gyung Paik, Joyce Van Der Laan Smith

Accounting Faculty Publications

This paper explores whether differences in accounting standards influence reporting behavior within the U.S. institutional environment where both IFRS and U.S. GAAP are used for reporting purposes. We focus on the accounting for impairment of long-lived assets, an area where significant differences exist between U.S. GAAP and IFRS. We identify all U.S.-listed firms who have recognized long-lived asset impairment losses during the 2004–2012 period. From these firms, we identify firms following IFRS, then develop a matched sample of U.S. GAAP firms, using a propensity score matching procedure. We examine the relation between impairment loss and unexpectedly high or low earnings …

Anticipation And Reaction To Going Concern Modified Audit Opinions By Sophisticated Investors, Marshall A. Geiger, Abdullah Kumas Jan 2018

Anticipation And Reaction To Going Concern Modified Audit Opinions By Sophisticated Investors, Marshall A. Geiger, Abdullah Kumas

Accounting Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to examine whether institutional investors (i) anticipate a distressed firm's receipt of a first‐time going‐concern modified audit opinion, and (ii) react to a first‐time going‐concern modified opinion by engaging in abnormal net selling of firm shares. Using a proprietary database of US institutional investor trades, we find that institutional investors are net sellers of first‐time going‐concern opinion firms beginning 6 months before the release of the report and remain net sellers through the subsequent 3 months. We also find that the severity of the reasons auditors modify their opinions is associated with increased trading …

The Association Between Audit Fees And Accounting Restatement Resulting From Accounting Fraud And Clerical Errors, Daniel Gyung Paik, Taewoo Kim, Kip Krumwiede, Brandon B. Lee Jan 2018

The Association Between Audit Fees And Accounting Restatement Resulting From Accounting Fraud And Clerical Errors, Daniel Gyung Paik, Taewoo Kim, Kip Krumwiede, Brandon B. Lee

Accounting Faculty Publications

Restatements of financial reporting arise from many sources including changes in accounting rules, changes in reporting entity, accounting errors, and fraud (or “irregularities”). Theory predicts that audit effort (measured by audit fees) and financial report restatements should be negatively associated because more audit effort means that auditors should be more likely to find errors or other issues that could lead to later restatement (Shibano 1990; Matsumura and Tucker, 1992; Lobo and Zhao, 2013). However, other studies have found either a positive association or no association between audit fees and subsequent restatements (Kinney et al., 2004; Stanley and DeZoort, 2007; Cao …

Auditor Lobbying On Accounting Standards, Abigail Allen, Karthik Ramanna, Sugata Roychowdhury Jan 2018

Auditor Lobbying On Accounting Standards, Abigail Allen, Karthik Ramanna, Sugata Roychowdhury

Faculty Publications

We examine how Big N auditors’ changing incentives impact their comment-letter lobbying on U.S. GAAP over the first thirty-four years of the FASB (1973–2006). In particular, we focus on the influence of auditors’ lobbying incentives arising from two basic factors: managing expected litigation and regulatory costs and catering to clients’ preferences for flexibility in GAAP. We find evidence that auditor lobbying is driven by prevailing standards of litigation and regulatory scrutiny, but we find no evidence that catering to clients’ preferences for flexibility in GAAP drives auditor lobbying. Broadly, our paper offers the first large-sample descriptive analysis of the role …

Controls And Cooperation In Interactive And Non-Interactive Settings, Jace Garrett, Jeffrey A. Livingston, William B. Tayler Jan 2018

Controls And Cooperation In Interactive And Non-Interactive Settings, Jace Garrett, Jeffrey A. Livingston, William B. Tayler

Faculty Publications

Prior research finds that controls that induce cooperation among collaborators on a project increase trust, and that this increased trust increases subsequent cooperation among collaborators. We extend this work by investigating how controls influence cooperative behavior in two settings. The first is an interactive setting where people work together and can benefit from each other’s work. The second is a non-interactive setting where people do not work together directly, but where behavior can be observed. We propose that because controls are likely to engender greater trust and reciprocity in interactive settings than in non-interactive settings, the effect of controls on …

The Value To Management Of Using The Internal Audit Function As A Management Training Ground, Joseph V. Carcello, Marc Eulerich, Adi Masli, David A. Wood

Faculty Publications

This study examines how using the internal audit function as a management training ground (MTG) impacts manager’s reliance on internal auditor recommendations. While prior research suggests that using internal audit as a MTG can adversely affect financial reporting quality, external audit fees, and internal audit efficiency, many internal audit functions use this practice. We study how this practice influences another important stakeholder—senior management. Based on survey results of 355 chief audit executives (CAEs), we find that CAEs perceive senior management to be more likely to use recommendations from MTG internal auditors than non- MTG internal auditors. To bolster the validity …

Citation-Based Benchmarks And Individual Accounting Faculty Research Rankings By Topical Area And Methodology, Garrison Nuttall, Neal Snow, Scott L. Summers, David A. Wood Jan 2018

Citation-Based Benchmarks And Individual Accounting Faculty Research Rankings By Topical Area And Methodology, Garrison Nuttall, Neal Snow, Scott L. Summers, David A. Wood

Faculty Publications

This paper provides citation rankings and benchmarking data for individual accounting researchers disaggregated by topic and methodological area and studies which factors increase citation totals. Based on Google Scholar data from 7,113 articles published in respected accounting journals, we find that citation totals differ significantly based on accounting topic area (accounting information systems, audit, financial, managerial, tax, other) and methodology (analytical, archival, experimental, other), suggesting the need to separately benchmark authors who publish in these groups. We also find that authors who have a broad collaboration network, graduated from a school that started a journal, are topic specialists, or publish …

Toward Conflict Or Compromise? How Violent Metaphors Polarize Partisan Issue Attitudes, Nathan P. Kalmoe, Joshua R. Gubler, David A. Wood Jan 2018

Toward Conflict Or Compromise? How Violent Metaphors Polarize Partisan Issue Attitudes, Nathan P. Kalmoe, Joshua R. Gubler, David A. Wood

Faculty Publications

We know much about how opinion leaders drive mass partisan polarization with position-taking cues but little on how different message types polarize citizens, and who responds most to those messages attributes. This article contributes new insights by investigating how exposure to common violent metaphors interacts with audience personality traits to polarize partisans on issues. Building from research on conflict orientations, we theorize that aggressive rhetoric primes aggression in aggressive partisans, motivating greater intransigence on party positions. As a consequence, aggressive partisans are pulled further apart on issues, thereby reducing prospects for compromise. We find support for our predictions in two …
