Using The Fasb's Qualitative Characteristics In Earnings Quality Measures, Abhijit Barua Jan 2006

Using The Fasb's Qualitative Characteristics In Earnings Quality Measures, Abhijit Barua

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this study, I develop a measure of earnings quality by using qualitative characteristics of financial statement information specified in the Statement of Financial Accounting Concepts (SFAC) No. 2 (FASB 1980). I derive a summary measure of earnings quality by applying factor analysis on fifteen variables representing different components of two primary dimensions of earnings quality: relevance and reliability. I then test the validity of the earnings quality construct by examining whether the construct reflects decision usefulness that is operationalized in two ways: value relevance and cost of capital analyses. I provide empirical evidence suggesting that the earnings quality construct …

Do Accruals Exacerbate Information Asymmetry In The Market?, Sonia Wasan Jan 2006

Do Accruals Exacerbate Information Asymmetry In The Market?, Sonia Wasan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A considerable body of evidence, both archival and experimental, suggests that accounting accruals are heterogeneously interpreted by investors. In this study, I examine whether the information asymmetry among investors arising from this heterogeneous interpretation, implied in these empirical results, affects transactions costs in the form of the bid-ask spread and its adverse selection component. I examine this impact both, in general, for all trading activity occurring for a firm over a continuous flow of information during the year and around the first release of accrual information for each quarter. The results of the study provide empirical evidence of a positive …

The Impact Of A Simulation Exercise In The Intermediate Financial Accounting Course, Anne Rich, Karen Cascini Jan 2006

The Impact Of A Simulation Exercise In The Intermediate Financial Accounting Course, Anne Rich, Karen Cascini

WCBT Faculty Publications

This paper presents the results of a simulation exercise included in the intermediate financial accounting course and discusses its impact on college-level students. The objectives of this study are to assess the impact of using a simulation exercise to improve students’ mastery of cash flow reports, as well as to assess their ability to synthesize data and draw conclusions about the liquidity and solvency of a company. Students who were required to perform analysis prior to taking the exam did better overall on generating a cash flow statement as well as evaluating both the liquidity and solvency of a company.

Individual Cognition And Dual-Task Interference In Group Support Systems, William G. Heninger, Alan R. Dennis, Kelly Mcnamara Hilmer Jan 2006

Individual Cognition And Dual-Task Interference In Group Support Systems, William G. Heninger, Alan R. Dennis, Kelly Mcnamara Hilmer

Faculty Publications

Previous research shows that synchronous text discussion through group support systems (GSS) can improve the exchange of information within teams, but this improved information exchange usually does not improve decisions because participants fail to process the new information they receive. This study examined one potential cause for this failure: Dual-task interference caused by the need to concurrently process new information from others while also contributing one's own information to the discussion. Although prior research argues that dual-task interference should be minimal, we found that it significantly reduced participants' information processing and led to lower decision quality. The effect sizes were …

Information Pursuit In Financial-Statement Analysis: Effects Of Choice, Effort, And Disaggregation, Mark W. Nelson, William B. Tayler Jan 2006

Information Pursuit In Financial-Statement Analysis: Effects Of Choice, Effort, And Disaggregation, Mark W. Nelson, William B. Tayler

Faculty Publications

Prior research provides evidence that financial-statement users weight information less heavily in judgment when that information is provided in a less accessible format (e.g., information disclosed in a footnote or less important financial statement rather than being recognized on the income statement (Maines and McDaniel 2000)). We provide evidence that, conditional on users performing the analysis necessary to transform the financial statements to appear as if disclosed information had been recognized, users may weight that information more heavily than it would have been if it had been recognized. Our experiments are set in the context of constructive capitalization of operating …

The Effects Of Financial Statement And Informational Complexity On Cash Flow Forecasts, Leslie Hodder, Patrick E. Hopkins, David A. Wood Jan 2006

The Effects Of Financial Statement And Informational Complexity On Cash Flow Forecasts, Leslie Hodder, Patrick E. Hopkins, David A. Wood

Faculty Publications

We characterize the operating-activities section of the indirect-approach statement of cash flows as backwards because it presents reconciling adjustments in a way that is opposite from the intuitively appealing, future-oriented, Conceptual Framework definitions of assets, liabilities and the accruals process. We propose that the reversed-accruals orientation required in the currently mandated indirect-approach statement of cash flows is unnecessarily complex, causing increased cash-flow forecast error and dispersion. We also predict that the mixed pattern (i.e., +/–, –/+) of operating cash flows and operating accruals reported by most companies also impedes investors’ ability to learn the time-series properties of cash flows and …

Publication Records Of Facility Promoted At The Top 75 Accounting Research Programs, Steven M. Glover, Douglas F. Prawitt, David A. Wood Jan 2006

Publication Records Of Facility Promoted At The Top 75 Accounting Research Programs, Steven M. Glover, Douglas F. Prawitt, David A. Wood

Faculty Publications

This paper presents a descriptive analysis of the publication records of faculty promoted from 1995 to 2003 at the top 75 accounting research programs (as ranked by Trieschmann, et al. 2000). The presentation and analyses of these data are designed to be useful to faculty and evaluation committees from a benchmarking and decision-making perspective. From a benchmarking perspective, the results will be useful in helping schools as they develop or refine relevant policies and research expectations. The results may be particularly useful in view of the fact that average accounting faculty publication records differ from the average publication records of …

The Reputational Penalty For Aggressive Accounting: Earnings Restatements And Management Turnover, Hemang Desai, Chris E. Hogan, Michael S. Wilkins Jan 2006

The Reputational Penalty For Aggressive Accounting: Earnings Restatements And Management Turnover, Hemang Desai, Chris E. Hogan, Michael S. Wilkins

School of Business Faculty Research

In this paper we investigate the reputational penalties to managers of firms announcing earnings restatements. More specifically, we examine management turnover and the subsequent re-hiring of displaced managers at firms announcing earnings restatements during 1997 or 1998. In contrast to prior research (Beneish 1999 and Agrawal, Jaffe and Karpoff, 1999), which does not find increased turnover following GAAP violations or revelation of corporate fraud, we find that 60% of restating firms experience a turnover in at least one top manager within 24 months of the restatement compared to only 35% among age-, size- and industry-matched firms. Moreover, 85% of the …

Empirical Evidence On Jurisdictions That Adopt Ifrs, Ole-Kristian Hope, Justin Jin, Tony Kang Jan 2006

Empirical Evidence On Jurisdictions That Adopt Ifrs, Ole-Kristian Hope, Justin Jin, Tony Kang

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) have recently been adopted in a number of jurisdictions, including the European Union. Despite the importance of IFRS in the context of global accounting standards harmonization, little is known regarding what institutional factors influence countries' decisions to voluntarily adopt IFRS. This issue is relevant to standard-setters because a better understanding of the motivations for adoption will enable them to promote IFRS more effectively to countries that currently do not employ IFRS. Consistent with bonding theory, we find that countries with weaker investor protection mechanisms are more likely to adopt IFRS. Our evidence also shows that …

Omnibus Proposal Of Professional Ethics Division Interpretations And Rulings; Exposure Draft (American Institute Of Certified Public Accountants), 2006, Sept. 8, American Institute Of Certified Public Accountants. Professional Ethics Executive Committee

Exposure Drafts, Comment Letters, and Statements of Position

Consistent with the original proposal issued in September 2005, the proposed interpretation states that independence would not be impaired if a member and the client agree that the unsuccessful party in a lawsuit or alternative dispute resolution (ADR) proceeding between them will pay the legal fees and expenses of the successful party. The proposed interpretation retains the conclusion that an indemnification or limitation of liability provision related to nonattest services performed for an attest client (that is, where the provision relates only to the nonattest services engagement and not the attest engagement) would not impair a member’s independence with respect …
