Finding aid only for Manuscripts Small Collection 3331. Receipts, promotional material, and a photograph of a sign documenting the operation of the Standard Oil Company service station at the corner of College and Seventh streets in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Also includes a paper by Michael Mathews for a museum internship in which he examined the items in the collection. Because of the deteriorated condition of many of the originals, they could not be kept without causing damage to other material. A month of inventory sheets were kept from December 1922 to show a typical month’s operation for the station.

Abstract: The Appalachian region in the southern mid-west has long been the source of stereotyping for dramatic and political affect. Through the course of nine years as a resident in an Appalachian community in south-central Kentucky, the author experienced life as it is lived by the local people. Through the establishment of an art education organization, the author became entwined with local families and became familiar with the origins of many of those stereotypes. Includes a booklet for recording infant weight and height and providing diet guidelines for the first twelve months. The letter bears the National Recovery Administration’s “blue eagle” symbol.

Finding aid only for Manuscripts Collection 649. Five account books for a grist mill and saw mill located in East Fork, Metcalfe County, Kentucky, as well as logging operations. The account books list wages paid for daily work as well as for piece work (handles). Employees were sometimes paid in cash, but most of the wages were paid in flour, mill, or other general store goods. Some of the accounts are for customers, not employees.

Student paper titled “Old Farm Machinery and Methods” in which Roy Seaborne, Jr. explores the types of tools farmers, both traditional and contemporary, use to plant, harvest, anddistribute their crops. Information was gathered by Seaborne from farmers in Pike and Taylor counties in Kentucky. The paper also includes black and white photographs of various machinery along with brief descriptions of how the equipment is utilized.

Vaughn identifies manual and mechanized farm equipmentand details the differences between the pieces. Vaughn collected information from equipment salesmen and rural farmers. Also included in the paper are black and white photographs of recognizable machines such as plows, wagons, rakes, and cultivators.

He also refers to having his brother-in-law William Clark, an estate legatee, sign a deed of release for lands sold to Whyte.

Availability of farmers markets may increase fruit and vegetable consumption among rural residents of the United States. We conducted a community-based marketing campaign, Plate it Up Kentucky Proud (PIUKP), in 6 rural communities over 2 years to determine the association between exposure to the campaign and fruit and vegetable purchases, adjusted for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipient status. Logistic regression was used to examine the odds of the PIUKP campaign influencing purchases. Awareness of the PIUKP marketing campaign was significantly associated with a willingness to prepare fruits and vegetables at home. Using marketing strategies at farmers markets may be an …
