Many actions are underway at global, national, and local levels to increase plastics circularity. However, studies evaluating the environmental and socio-economic impacts of such a transition are lacking at regional levels in the United States. In this work, the existing polyethylene terephthalate and polyolefin plastics supply chains in Michigan were compared to a potential future (‘NextCycle’) scenario that looks at increasing Michigan’s overall recycling rate to 45%. Material flow analysis data was combined with environmental and socio-economic metrics to evaluate the sustainability of these supply chains for the modeled scenarios. Overall, the NextCycle scenario for these supply chains achieved a …

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Although national and statewide studies continue to show that women and girls in Utah are not thriving in critical areas, the Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) also wanted to explore what Utahns believe are opportunities for females in the state. With Utah continuing to have high levels of domestic violence, sexual assault, child sexual abuse, and gender-based discrimination1 and ranking as the worst state for women’s equality with low levels of women’s leadership representation in nearly all domains, Utahns need reminders that there are opportunities available. Even though we do know that the needle has moved slightly in …

Authenticity In Fashion And Beauty: Influencer Marketing And The Development Of Parasocial Relationships On Social Media, Catherine Goodheart May 2024

Authenticity In Fashion And Beauty: Influencer Marketing And The Development Of Parasocial Relationships On Social Media, Catherine Goodheart

Student Theses and Dissertations

Social media influencers are more accessible than celebrities, making their audience form strong connections with them through their niche content. The parasocial relationship formed between influencers and their followers through the followers' media literacy of the influencer’s authenticity enables influencers to market themselves promoting products; without a perceived authenticity, a parasocial relationship will struggle to form. This parasocial relationship is typically to generate profit for the influencer, as many influencers are paid to promote and advertise products specific to their niche(s) on their profiles or on the brand’s profiles. A media analysis was used to study 5 beauty and fashion …

Organizing Queer Civil Rights Movements: Pride Parades And Communicative Dilemmas, David J. Dooling May 2024

Organizing Queer Civil Rights Movements: Pride Parades And Communicative Dilemmas, David J. Dooling

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Pride parades (“Pride”) are sites of communicative tension for the queer community. While the political origins of queer civil rights practiced widespread resistance to institutional heteronormativity and homophobia, Pride is a space where business owners, community stakeholders, and activists debate the political utility of queerness. This dissertation employs queer and sociomaterial theoretical traditions, and autoethnographic methodological approaches to explore the communicative strategies of Pride organizers—individuals who create, coordinate, and conceptualize the display of sexuality and gender in the public sphere. I draw on tension-centered approaches to organizational communication, feminist dilemmatic theorizing, and co-sexuality to investigate power-laden structures and decision-making in …

The Role Of E-Participation, Human Capital, And Corruption-Free On Environmental Performance, Mohammad I. Merhi, Punit Ahluwalia

Information Systems Faculty Publications

There are many concerns at the global level about environmental performance. The United Nations has created a framework for measuring national development goals that enable environmental sustainability. This paper examines the relationships between technological and social factors as enablers of environmental performance and draws from technological determinism and human agency paradigms. It fills an important gap in the literature by empirically examining the hypothesized relationships. The specific examined factors are online service (maturity and quality), IT infrastructure, e-participation, corruption-free, and human capital. Environmental performance is the dependent variable. These factors are relevant to ten of the seventeen goals that the …

Promoting Construction Of China’S Modern Industrial System By “ Multi-Tracking” Research And Innovation Model, Yongnian Zheng, Lanmeng Xu

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

The core of the competition between large nations during the fourth industrial revolution is centered on economic resilience, which is based on the industrial system of each nation. The key takeaway from the historical experience of industrial development in the United Kingdom and the United States is that the building of a modern industrial system must prioritize the balanced development of industries rather than concentrating solely on the financial and service sectors and ignoring the manufacturing sector, which leads to industrial hollowing-out. China ought to build a modern industrial system that possesses the five characteristics, including industry comprehensiveness, large capacity, …

Furthermore, it proposes …

Development Of China’S Ultra-Precision Equipment Industry And Support Of Patient Capital, Hong Jiang May 2024

Development Of China’S Ultra-Precision Equipment Industry And Support Of Patient Capital, Hong Jiang

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

As a core field of high-end manufacturing, China’s ultra-precision equipment industry has achieved rapid development driven by policy support and technological advancements. Nevertheless, it still faces challenges such as technological bottlenecks, international competition, and funding shortages. Its characteristics—long R&D cycles, high risks, and substantial capital investments—are misaligned with the risk-averse nature of traditional financial systems, urgently requiring the support of “patient capital”. Although China possesses a vast pool of long-term capital (e.g., social security funds and insurance funds), systemic gaps prevent these funds from being effectively transformed into patient capital that supports frontier technologies. This study argues that developing patient …

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

During the “15th Five-Year Plan”, China’s semiconductor equipment industry is facing the dual challenges of technological blockade and supply chain decoupling. It needs to shift from “catching up and replacing” to “path innovation” to break through its dependence on the international technology system. This study analyzes three core needs: supporting self-reliance (breaking through the bottleneck of advanced process equipment and parts), building an innovation ecosystem with Chinese characteristics (exploring new technology paths such as GAA and 3D integration), and promoting intelligent upgrading (integrating AI and digital technology). At the same time, it proposes to use the strategy of “re-globalization” to …
