Corporate Social Responsibility Programs In Supply Chain Strategies, Craig A. Standridge
Corporate Social Responsibility Programs In Supply Chain Strategies, Craig A. Standridge
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study focused on United States-based small and medium-sized (SME) manufacturing companies and their decision-making strategies regarding corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs within their supply chain strategies. As CSR gains global acceptance, those stakeholder interests seek validation and compete for outcomes that affect the triple bottom line of people, the planet, and profits. Strategic managers must skillfully balance the implementation of CSR programs with available resources, all without a guaranteed increase in competitiveness or organizational excellence. CSR is often perceived as more suitable for larger organizations with ample resources. At the same time, SMEs grapple with the fiduciary challenges of …

Understanding Consumer Belief Of Locavorism On Food Consumption At Farmers’ Markets: Implications For Extension Professionals, Youngdeok Lee, Christopher Sneed, Michelle L. Childs
Understanding Consumer Belief Of Locavorism On Food Consumption At Farmers’ Markets: Implications For Extension Professionals, Youngdeok Lee, Christopher Sneed, Michelle L. Childs
Journal of Extension
Using an intercept method at two local farmers’ markets (n= 192), this study found the notion that local foods taste better and are more nutritious (i.e., lionization) and the notion that buying locally supports and contributes to the local economy and community (i.e., communization), positively influences consumers’ attitude towards shopping at their local farmers’ market. This positive attitude subsequently influences consumer purchase behavior. Extension professionals can utilize these data-driven results to aid in effective farmers’ market promotion by communicating micro-benefits (e.g., nutrition, taste) and macro-benefits (e.g., economic impact) to potential and current farmers’ market consumers.

Do Firms Follow Through On Environmental Commitments? An Empirical Examination, Rick Hardcopf, Kevin Linderman, Rachna Shah
Do Firms Follow Through On Environmental Commitments? An Empirical Examination, Rick Hardcopf, Kevin Linderman, Rachna Shah
Management Faculty Publications
In response to ever-increasing pressure from stakeholders to reduce the impact of their operations and supply chain on the natural environment, firms frequently make public commitments to improve environmental performance. However, the commitments are difficult to validate and thus of unknown quality. Understanding whether and when the commitments are valid proxies for action is essential because they are used by environmentally conscious stakeholders to assess firm environmental performance in anticipation of buying from, investing in, working for, or selling to a firm. Results from examining 442 U.S. manufacturing firms show that firms generally follow through on such commitments. Larger firms …

[Abstract For] Using Excel’S “Lambda” Function To Compute Modified Duration, Dollar Duration, And Bond Convexity, Tom Arnold, Joseph Farizo, Andrew C. Szakmary, Nancy Tran
Finance Faculty Publications
We create a modified duration function that is more accessible than Excel’s current Macaulay duration function (=DURATION) which requires several details about the bond.
The dollar duration and convexity functions are not currently available in Excel’s default functions. When these functions are copied to a second Excel file, the functions automatically become available as functions within the second file without the need for recreating the functions.
We provide instructions on how to implement the =LAMBDA function to more than just the creation of the bond application functions.

The increasing involvement of States and their surrogates in cross-border commercial activities has heralded an urgent need for codification of the well-established public international law rule of sovereign immunity. The problem is particularly thorny in international arbitration when corporate entities seek to enlist the courts of one State to seize the property of another state to enforce an arbitral award. The complex nature of sovereign immunity in a globalized economy and the challenge it poses for courts in the Caribbean, was highlighted in enforcement proceeding brought by oil giant, ConocoPhillips against Venezuela’s State corporations. This article therefore discusses (a) the …

Revealing The Double-Edged Sword: Introducing The Technology And Consumer Well-Being Paradox Model, Graeme Mclean, Nina Krey, Jennifer Brannon Barhorst
Rohrer College of Business Departmental Research
While discourse on technology and consumer well-being has been at the forefront of academics' and practitioners' agendas, the theoretical understanding of the complex interplay between technology and consumer well-being has remained tenuous. To address this gap in our understanding of technology's influence on consumer well-being, this research provides a comprehensive literature review of recent articles published in Psychology & Marketing. Findings indicate a double-edged sword where technology has the propensity to not only foster a state of negative well-being but can also enhance consumers' well-being. Additionally, a technology well-being paradox is uncovered whereby technology is used to manage the negative …

The Effect Of Financial Disclosure Medium And Ceo Gender On Perceptions Of Overconfidence And Credibility, Sheryl Moriarty
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
I experimentally examine how investors react to an unexpected negative earnings announcement delivered using video versus audio by an overconfident female CEO versus an overconfident male CEO. The results show that the CEO's gender does not matter in terms of the delivery medium. I predict and did not find that CEO overconfidence is lower for a financial disclosure delivered by video as opposed to audio only. Further, the hypothesis that the perception of female CEO overconfidence is higher versus male CEO overconfidence was not supported. Overall, the participants in the study did not find either the male or the female …

Defining Value And Measuring Roi For Expatriate International Assignments In Firms That Internationalize As Born-Global Companies, Dale Collins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The expatriate international assignment, a time-tested tool for global organizations, is known to be expensive and fraught with risks; defining its value has proven difficult for multinational firms in the twentieth century that internationalized using multi-stage theory. Recently, born-global internationalization theory has gained momentum among emerging firms, notably technology-based firms employing expatriate assignments. This study asks, how do born-global firms define value or benefit when determining return on investment (ROI) for expatriate international assignments? Multi stage theory posits firms first establish domestic markets creating well-developed cultures and sophisticated policies designed to mitigate risk and contain costs prior to internationalizing. Born-global …

Influences On Small Business Leaders’ Decisions About Supportive Policies And Practices For Employees Who Have Experienced Intimate Partner Abuse, Marilyn Lucille Brock
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Intimate partner abuse affects millions of individuals from all segments of society, and existing literature demonstrates that it has extensive impacts on American companies through loss of workplace productivity, reduced workplace safety, and employee turnover. While several supportive policies and practices have been suggested for implementation in business environments, many business leaders do not perceive the utilization of such measures as having business value. Thus, this study addresses the question, What influences business leaders’ decisions about whether and to what degree to adopt policies and practices for responding to employees’ experiences of intimate partner abuse? This dissertation is a qualitative …

Utilizing Machine Learning To Forecast Sector-Level Equity Returns From Sector-Level Financial Ratios, Greg Kuppenheimer
Utilizing Machine Learning To Forecast Sector-Level Equity Returns From Sector-Level Financial Ratios, Greg Kuppenheimer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Academics and equity analysts often utilize fundamental financial ratios to evaluate an industry's financial and operational performance. However, sophisticated econometric methods could be improved for estimating these ratios' importance in predicting sector-level stock return performance. To address this gap, gradient-boosted decision tree methods were applied to the WRDS sector-level financial ratio database to identify if financial ratios effectively forecast sector-level stock returns in future periods. The findings show that these ratios are predictive and economically material, both stand alone and in combination with other macroeconomic factors. Using these predictions, long and long-short sector-level portfolios were created, and most of these …

Workplace loneliness is a topic of growing interest among scholars and practitioners, in part because of the known impacts of loneliness on individuals’ well-being and performance. Recent literature has suggested that senior leaders may be vulnerable to feelings of workplace loneliness but lacks a thorough depiction of how leaders experience and cope with the feelings. This qualitative study explores the lived experiences and perspectives of senior leaders through interviews with 26 leaders and seven close confidants who provide a nuanced understanding of how senior leaders experience workplace loneliness and offer insight on mitigating these feelings. The findings suggest that the …

Leadership Coaching In The Fourth Industrial Revolution, Ray Forbes
All Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Today’s world of extraordinary change follows a long history of technology-driven industrial revolutions. Author Alvin Toffler eloquently identified, categorized, and named the first three of them: Agricultural, Industrial, and Informational. Likening these revolutions to major waves of change, Toffler also described their impact on the social, political, economic and environmental ethos of the times in which they occurred. Recently, a number of knowledgeable commentators have suggested that we are now on the cusp of a fourth industrial wave. This large-scale transformational groundswell is being propelled by a dramatic acceleration in the rate of change itself. It is characterized by major …

Sustainable development (sustainability) objectives are achieved when environmental, economic, and social/human aspects are respectfully considered in organisational public and private decision-making. This study reviews and critiques these three main components as attempts are made to achieve sustainable business development. The results allow decision-makers to identify issues that need to be considered when making decisions regarding environmental, economic, and human resources. A literature review methodology is utilized. The findings highlighted flaws in all three main sustainability components. Renewable energy generators are benefiting the environmental component of sustainability, but at a slower pace than anticipated. Global indicators of environmental degradation are on …

Are Short-Selling Restrictions Effective?, Yashar H. Barardehi, Andrew Bird, Stephen A. Karolyi, Thomas G. Ruchti
Business Faculty Articles and Research
Despite strong theoretical predictions based on disagreement, limited empirical evidence links short-selling restrictions to higher prices. We test this relationship using quasi-experimental methods based on rule 201, a threshold-based policy that restricts aggressive short selling when intraday returns cross −10%. When comparing stocks on either side of the threshold in the same hour of trading, we find that the restriction leads to 8% lower short-sale volume and 35 basis points higher daily returns. These price effects do not reverse after the restriction is lifted.
