This course explores how opportunities for creating new value in new ways are identified. The different pathways to opportunity (i.e., recognition, discovery, and creation) are examined as a function of the interaction between the individual and the environment. Students will develop an inventory of potential opportunities and then identify the one most worth pursuing based on a combination of characteristics of the individual and the opportunity. With the chosen opportunity in mind, students will develop a user-driven value proposition that articulates how they intend to create value, which they will present at the end of the course.

The funding sources discussed will be diverse ranging from angel investors to venture capitalists to non-profits to debt financing. The course will identify how these funding sources differ, what the risks and rewards are, and how the nature of the venture affects the funding source. Though quantitative concepts such as forecasting and valuations will be discussed, the class will mainly emphasize the qualitative issues to consider when raising funds.

This dissertation explored the inefficient allocation of marketing budgets and the misallocation of corporate sponsorships. The researcher opened by discussing the foundation of the study and the underlying lack of understanding and measure of corporate sponsorships in corporate marketing. The study used a flexible multiple-case study design to explore corporate sponsorship allocations and measurements. The researcher provided two research questions to guide the study, along with underlying assumptions, limitations, and delimitations that may impact the study, before concluding the first section with a literature review. This researcher examined the effect of corporate governance (CG) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) on banking performance in the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC) region. The data was obtained from the Worldwide Governance and the World Bank sovereign database from 2003 to 2018. This study employs the z-score to proxy the CSR factors such as labor force participation rate, population density, and renewable energy. The results reveal that the fixed effects model is superior to the pooled ordinary least square (OLS) and the random-effects model. Although leader humor is a growing research topic, there are still unaddressed issues surrounding this topic. In particular, there is disagreement surrounding the conceptualizations of positive and negative leader humor, conflicting theoretical predictions and empirical findings on the effects of leader humor, a dearth of research on the antecedents and correlates of leader humor, as well as a lack of research on the boundary conditions of these relationships. "Needlestick injuries (NSI) affect approximately 1,000 people per day across U.S. hospitals. Needlestick injuries cost an estimated $3,042 per victim annually, according to the report. The costs go toward laboratory fees for testing exposed employees, associated labor and counseling and post-exposure follow-ups." (Beckner's Clinical Leadership & Infection Control, 2020). It was noted at an urban teaching hospital that needlestick injuries are an issue. Researchers believe this number is an underestimate of the actual amount of needle stick injuries. First, a classroom culture that encourages students to be responsible for managing their own learning rather than relying on the teacher can boost student learning. This study contributes simultaneously to research on women board members and competitive dynamics by investigating two unresolved research questions: What is the effect of female directors on the firm’s competitive repertoire? Under what conditions is this effect more pronounced? Leveraging the “Awareness-Motivation-Capability” (AMC) framework, we predict that having women on the board of directors should impact the complexity, heterogeneity, and volume of the firm’s competitive moves. Relying upon a sample of U.S. pharmaceutical firms for the years 2000 to 2017, we find that adding female directors on the board positively affects the complexity and volume of a firm’s competitive moves, …

This paper examines the subreddit WallStreetBets and its online weekday posts discussing stock market trades. By collecting data from the subreddit and Yahoo Finance, linear regression models are done using Rstudio to determine the relationship and impact that the number of comments has on percentage change in return and volume. This study concludes that when it comes to the relationship between returns and the number of comments, it is insignificant. However, we find that trading volume is positively and significantly related to the number of comments.

Auditor Response To Changing Risk: Money Market Funds During The Financial Crisis, Kyle D. Allen, Drew B. Winters

Audits provide monitoring for investors. The collapse of markets across the financial crisis made assets more difficult to value, which increased risk for auditors. The money markets were at the center of the financial crisis increasing audit engagement risk on money market funds, which at the time of the crisis were highly opaque. Measuring the response to increased engagement risk with audit fees, this study finds that auditors increase their fees for the riskiest class of funds. However, no evidence was found that audit fees increased as funds increased their holdings in the riskiest class of securities.

Non-compete and liquidated damages clauses in dental employment contracts must adhere to specific limits for enforceability. Courts require reasonable geographic and temporal constraints on non-competes, typically within patient-served areas under two years. Liquidated damages should reflect actual losses, especially in cases where damages are difficult to gauge. Courts may still reject these provisions if they find breaches or inequity. Employers are advised to strike a balance between safeguarding their interests and fostering positive work environments.
