Incomplete Markets And Financial Innovation: Consequences For Risk-Sharing, Household Welfare, And Portfolio Choice, Nicolas Duvernois

The dissertation consists of three chapters measuring the degree of risk-sharing in a panel of US households, and its impact on welfare and portfolio choice. Conventional wisdom suggests financial innovation improves risk-sharing by completing markets and lowering transaction costs--households engage in risk-sharing to insure against idiosyncratic income shocks to improve their own welfare. In the first chapter, using household level income and imputed consumption data, I find that households' ability to smooth permanent shocks has slightly increased while transitory insurance remained unchanged. However, I find that participating households have higher consumption insurance. Their ability to insure permanent shocks has improved …

The purpose of this study is to examine how the volatility interruption mechanisms affect idiosyncratic volatilities in Korean stock markets. Collecting the South Korea Stock Market (KOSPI) data from June 15, 2015 to March 31, 2019, we collect each residual„ from three different estimated models: CAPM, FF3, and FF5. To estimate the conditional idiosyncratic volatility, we employ two conditional time-varying measurements: GARCH and TGARCH. Our results show that the conditional idiosyncratic volatility increases when stock prices reach the upper and lower static limits, indicating the implementation of adopting static VI mechanism neither stabilize market conditions nor reduce excess volatility along …

This thesis assesses how Tulsa, Oklahoma grew to utilize tax increment financing (TIF) to produce economic activity in Tulsa’s historic downtown area. Specifically, how the creation, history, and maintenance of ONEOK Field, a $60 million, 6,000-seat sports venue in Tulsa’s historically African American neighborhood became the catalyst for Tulsa’s current TIF policy. In examining the fiscal outcomes of ONEOK Field, this thesis finds implications for inequitable investment in and around Tulsa’s Greenwood TIF district

Much of the current research on salesperson motivation focuses on extrinsic reward expectancy related to compensation, contests, incentives, and quotas. We find that while salespeople want to make money, they also want to make a difference and contribute to society through their work. In Study 1, the qualitative findings reveal that a sense of purpose–the belief that one is making a contribution to a cause greater and more enduring than oneself–is a significant motivator for salespeople. Clinical information system (CIS) whose core component is the electronic medical record (EMR), is critical to efficient health care delivery. However, patient mobility and CIS heterogeneity have strengthened the interoperability problem of EMRs. Although ontology is a panacea to this problem, creating interoperable EMR ontology is still esoteric. This paper explicates how an interoperable EMR ontology was crafted for a tertiary health facility in Nigeria. The ontology named EMRONT was created using the Noy and McGuiness’ methodology and Protégé. Emergency evacuation of a ship becomes an important issue in case of an accident. In order to present the TITANIC incident in 1912 from recurring again, IMO has stipulated International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). The main purpose of this study is to find an optimal personnel evacuation route in order to increase personnel’s security at sea. Mathematical programming is the research methodology in this study. After formulating the model and exploring different evacuation scenarios, we compare the results from our minimum cost flow model with that of originnal evacuation plan. Some suggestions are provided.

The City of Sullivan’s Quality of Life plan indicates a need for a local farmer’s market and other community gathering spaces. ENVI460 students were tasked with putting forth recommendations for a community farmer’s market space that would meet the needs of Sullivan, IN. Students recommended operational procedures for the 3 N. Section Street in Sullivan as the farmer’s market. They also provided construction and multipurpose use recommendations to enact.

The City of Sullivan enacted a Quality of Life plan to address multiple improvements to their city, including some of the city’s infrastructure. Mayor Clint Lamb’s goal is to connect the city via roadways and trail systems that are accessible for all transportation methods and attractive for community members and tourists. ENVI460 students provided recommendations based off the city’s need for improvements to road systems and attractiveness. Students recommended a new roadway design for the Main Street section, sustainable infrastructure additions and buffer zones, and green space for attraction sites.

Sullivan County and Sullivan, IN identified a need to increase tourism to the county and incorporated city limits. Seven students in ECON351 were tasked with performing SWOT analyses of Sullivan County’s tourism industry and providing recommendations to improve tourism. Three dimensions of tourism were analyzed: Eco-Tourism, Entertainment, and Historical/Heritage. Recommendations for improving tourism centered on these three dimensions and included expanding trails and facilities, improving social media accounts, preservation and educational opportunities, billboard usage, and more.

On August 2-3, 2021, the Thomas J. O’Keefe Institute for Sustainable Supply of Strategic Minerals at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) hosted the NSF-funded virtual workshop ‘Resilient Supply of Critical Minerals’. The workshop was convened via Zoom and attracted 158 registrants, including 108 registrants from academia (61 students), 30 registrants from government agencies, and 20 registrants from the private sector. The benefits of physical activity are well documented and improve all aspects of health and overall wellbeing. Globally, on average, 37.1% of women are insufficiently physically active while only 23.4% of men are; this trend is also found in Utah, where 19.4% of women are insufficiently physically active while only 17.6% of men are. While women often live longer than men, they are frequently in worse health. Physical inactivity contributes to the development and severity of chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and hypertension. Nonprofit brands vary widely in their positioning to consumers, ranging from crisis and desperation, to joy and optimism.The literature, however, provides limiteddirection for the many nonprofit organizations that seek to align their brand with positive emotions.
