Effective Strategic Decision-Making Strategies For Plant Managers In Pharmaceutical And Medical Device Manufacturing In Modern Day Puerto Rico: A Qualitative Case Study, Cherisa Irene Jerez
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This qualitative, collective case study covers the experience of strategic decision making in a pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturing environment in Puerto Rico during the current economic crisis. The medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturing industry in Puerto Rico was selected because of the tax expirations targeting this specific industry and the predominance on the island this industry represents in the manufacturing environment. Despite Puerto Rico’s dominance in medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturing over the past 60 years, the current financial and government crisis poses a significant threat to executive level commitment toward maintaining operations on the island. Research questions focused …

Privacy Concerns And Benefits Of Engagement With Social Media-Enabled Apps: A Privacy Calculus Perspective, Mohsen Jozani, Emmanuel Wusuhon Yanibo Ayaburi, Myung Ko, Kim-Kwang Raymond Choo
Information Systems Faculty Publications
Privacy threats in a social media-enabled application (app) can originate from either the institution or other app users. Although privacy in social media is well studied, the role of social (peer) privacy concerns is largely unknown and most privacy studies on mobile apps focus on initial adoption and ignore long-term behavioral outcomes. Drawing on the privacy calculus theory, this study examines the impact of both institutional and social privacy concerns on long-term user engagement with social media-enabled apps. Findings from the analysis of 354 survey responses reveal that both institutional and social privacy concerns decrease engagement. Regarding the antecedents, the …

Statistical Measurement Of Trees' Similarity, Sahar Sabbaghan, Cecil Eng Huang Chua, Lesley A. Gardner
Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works
Diagnostic theories are fundamental to Information Systems practice and are represented in trees. One way of creating diagnostic trees is by employing independent experts to construct such trees and compare them. However, good measures of similarity to compare diagnostic trees have not been identified. This paper presents an analysis of the suitability of various measures of association to determine the similarity of two diagnostic trees using bootstrap simulations. We find that three measures of association, Goodman and Kruskal's Lambda, Cohen's Kappa, and Goodman and Kruskal's Gamma (J Am Stat Assoc 49(268):732-764, 1954) each behave differently depending on what is inconsistent …

Introduction To The Symposium On Soft And Hard Law On Business And Human Rights, Steven R. Ratner
Articles
This symposium turns to a major debate within a field of international law that has moved from the periphery to center stage in just a few decades—business and human rights, or BHR: Can and should international law's approach to the human rights impacts of business activity shift from today's mostly soft-law framework to a multilateral treaty regime? While advocates for and against such a treaty debate this point at the UN Human Rights Council and other venues, this symposium examines the problem from four theoretical perspectives. Each contribution offers insights for practitioners and scholars alike, but they suggest no easy …

When Time Is Sales: The Impact Of Sales Manager Time Allocation Decisions On Sales Team Performance, Adam Rapp, J. Andrew Petersen, Douglas E. Hughes, Jessica Ogilvie
Marketing Faculty Research and Publications
Sales managers often take on the dual responsibilities of managing a sales team and selling to customers. This practice raises questions about how sales managers' time allocation to managing and selling activities affects sales team performance. Building on qualitative findings, this research first highlights and categorizes activities that are regularly competing for the limited time resources of today's sales managers. Our qualitative results reveal a prevalence of sales managers taking a "hybrid" approach to managing their sales teams by regularly allocating time toward both managing and selling activities. Through a resource allocation lens, we investigate how the time allocation decisions …

The Governance Divide In Global Corporate Responsibility: The Global Structuration Of Reporting And Certification Frameworks, 1998-2017, Shawn Pope, Alwyn Lim
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
In recent decades, as worldwide attention to corporate responsibility increased, the global corporate responsibility (GCR) movement did not converge on a singular governance model nor hybridize into myriad country-specific models. The movement, rather, bifurcated into onerous certification frameworks and more lax reporting frameworks. We examine this ‘governance divide’ in the GCR movement by investigating the cross-national diffusion of seven core GCR frameworks. We adopt a glocalization perspective that conceptualizes a vertical nesting of local and global contexts. Our cross-national quantitative analyses suggest that, while linkages to global culture have encouraged business participation in all GCR frameworks, power dependencies related to …
