Does Audit Committee Accounting Expertise Help To Promote Audit Quality? Evidence From Auditor Reporting Of Internal Control Weaknesses*, Ling Lei Lisic, Linda A. Myers, Timothy Seidel, Jian Zhou Jan 2019

Does Audit Committee Accounting Expertise Help To Promote Audit Quality? Evidence From Auditor Reporting Of Internal Control Weaknesses*, Ling Lei Lisic, Linda A. Myers, Timothy Seidel, Jian Zhou

Faculty Publications

In this study, we examine whether audit committee accounting expertise helps to promote audit quality by motivating auditors to conduct diligent internal control audits and make appropriate internal control assessments because audit committee accounting expertise safeguards auditors from dismissal following adverse internal control opinions. Among clients with existing and likely internal control material weaknesses (as proxied by future restatements of audited financial statements), we find a greater likelihood of adverse internal control audit opinions when the audit committee has greater accounting expertise (measured by the proportion of accounting experts on the audit committee). Among all clients, we find a lower …

The Contribution Of Family Leisure To Family Functioning And Family Satisfaction Among Urban Russian Families, Mikale Williamson, Ramon Zabriskie, Jasmine Townsend, Peter Ward, Gilbert Fellingham, Irina Kuznetsova Jan 2019

The Contribution Of Family Leisure To Family Functioning And Family Satisfaction Among Urban Russian Families, Mikale Williamson, Ramon Zabriskie, Jasmine Townsend, Peter Ward, Gilbert Fellingham, Irina Kuznetsova

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to examine how both family leisure involvement and family leisure satisfaction contributed to the explanation of variance in family functioning and satisfaction with family life among urban Russian families (n = 597). As an initial examination of family leisure functioning in the Russian culture, mixed model analysis accounted for family-level and individual level variance, and indicated core family leisure satisfaction was the strongest predictor of all aspects of family functioning and satisfaction with family life, a pattern similar across other cultures. There were also positive relationships between balance family leisure and various aspects of …

Déjà Vu: The Effect Of Executives And Directors With Prior Banking Crisis Experience On Bank Outcomes Around The Global Financial Crisis*, Anwer S. Ahmed, Brant E. Christensen, Adam J. Olson, Christopher G. Yust Jan 2019

Déjà Vu: The Effect Of Executives And Directors With Prior Banking Crisis Experience On Bank Outcomes Around The Global Financial Crisis*, Anwer S. Ahmed, Brant E. Christensen, Adam J. Olson, Christopher G. Yust

Faculty Publications

We investigate the effect of executives and directors with prior banking crisis experience on bank outcomes around the global financial crisis (GFC). Executives and directors with previous experience leading banks through a bank crisis may have been uniquely able to understand the risks, recognize the warnings signs early, and thus respond more effectively to the GFC. Controlling for other executive, director, and bank-level characteristics, we examine whether bank performance, risk taking, and accounting quality in the period immediately before and during the GFC are affected by having executives or directors who previously served as bank executives or directors during the …

Reward Type And Performance: An Examination Of Organizational Wellness Programs, William G. Heninger, Steven D. Smith, David A. Wood

Faculty Publications

We examine organizational control in the context of wellness programs—organizational initiatives designed to improve the physical and mental health of employees. In a field study setting, we examine the associations of three different types of incentives (cash, gift cards, and tangible rewards) with wellness program performance. We find that employees who successfully complete program challenges are associated with greater weight loss. We also find participants choosing gift cards are associated with the greatest program success, even though cash rewards are selected more than twice as often as gift cards. Tangible rewards are the least frequently selected reward and are associated …

Analyst Forecast Bundling, Michael S. Drake, Peter Joos, Joseph Pacelli, Brady Twedt Jan 2019

Analyst Forecast Bundling, Michael S. Drake, Peter Joos, Joseph Pacelli, Brady Twedt

Faculty Publications

Changing economic conditions over the past two decades have created incentives for sell-side analysts to both provide their institutional clients tiered services and to streamline their written research process. One manifestation of these changes is an increased likelihood of analysts’ issuing earnings forecasts for multiple firms on the same day. We identify this bundling property and show that bundling has increased steadily over time. We provide field evidence that the practice is a cost-saving measure, a natural byproduct of analysts focusing on thematic research, and a reflection of forecast updating that occurs in advance of important events. Our empirical analyses …

Is There Information Content In Information Acquisition?, Michael S. Drake, Darren T. Roulstone, Bret A. Johnson, Jacob Thornock Jan 2019

Is There Information Content In Information Acquisition?, Michael S. Drake, Darren T. Roulstone, Bret A. Johnson, Jacob Thornock

Faculty Publications

In this study, we examine whether investors’ actions to acquire accounting information are predictive of future firm performance because these actions partially reveal investors’ private expectations of this performance. Using a database of EDGAR downloads, we find some evidence that information acquisition of accounting reports by EDGAR users is, on average, predictive of future firm performance. We then determine the identity of the EDGAR user and examine whether different users’ private expectations will be relatively more predictive of subsequent performance. We find that the information acquisition activities of more sophisticated institutional users (e.g., hedge funds, investment banks) are more strongly …

The Role Of The Business Press In The Pricing Of Analysts’ Recommendation Revisions, Minkwan Ahn, Michael S. Drake, Hangsoo Kyung, Han Stice Jan 2019

The Role Of The Business Press In The Pricing Of Analysts’ Recommendation Revisions, Minkwan Ahn, Michael S. Drake, Hangsoo Kyung, Han Stice

Faculty Publications

We investigate the information-dissemination role of the business press by examining the coverage of analyst recommendation revisions. Consistent with the press providing wider dissemination of analyst reports, we find evidence that coverage of analyst recommendation revisions significantly increases the initial market reaction to these revisions and decreases the subsequent price drift. Furthermore, we find that news flash coverage, rather than in-depth coverage, of a recommendation revision drives both the initial market reaction results and drift results. Finally, we show that broader press coverage influences the activities of large-trade institutional investors but not highfrequency traders. Overall, our findings suggest a complementary …

“Thank You, Siri”: Politeness And Intelligent Digital Assistants, Nathan Burton, James Gaskin Jan 2019

“Thank You, Siri”: Politeness And Intelligent Digital Assistants, Nathan Burton, James Gaskin

Faculty Publications

Interactions with intelligent digital assistants like Apple's Siri, Amazon's Alexa, and Google’s Google Assistant can often be direct and terse, which is leading many to worry that users’ uncivility towards digital assistants is causing users to become ruder in their human interactions. Although digital assistants are nearing ubiquity, not much is known about how interactions with this form of artificial intelligence may negatively impact human social behaviors. Practice-oriented researchers have started initial explorations into the effects of interaction with digital assistants from a social psychology perspective, and academics have pursued similar questions within the paradigm of current human-computer interaction research. …

Diversity In Peer-Advice Networks And The Emergence Of Collective Post-Adoptive Attitudes: A Multilevel Perspective, Tanner Skousen, Elena Karahanna Jan 2019

Diversity In Peer-Advice Networks And The Emergence Of Collective Post-Adoptive Attitudes: A Multilevel Perspective, Tanner Skousen, Elena Karahanna

Faculty Publications

Implementing new enterprise information systems (EIS) has been an important, expensive, and constant problem that research has tried to solve for years. Previous implementation research offers conflicting viewpoints on the role that social influence dynamics play in implementation success. We study one social influence mechanism, namely peer-advice networks, and examine how the diversity characteristics (separation, disparity, and variety) of these networks lead to the emergence of a collective post-adoptive attitude (either resistance or support) toward a new information system. We propose a multilevel, longitudinal study using electronic medical record systems as a context to analyze the effect of diversity on …

Playable Case Studies: A New Educational Genre For Technical Writing Instruction, Jonathan Balzotti, Derek Hansen Jan 2019

Playable Case Studies: A New Educational Genre For Technical Writing Instruction, Jonathan Balzotti, Derek Hansen

Faculty Publications

A Playable Case Study (PCS) is a hybrid learning experience where students (1) participate in a fictional narrative that unfolds through an immersive, simulated environment and (2) engage in classroom activities and lessons that provide educational scaffolding and promote metacognition through in-game and out-of-game experiences. We present the Microcore PCS to illustrate the potential of this new type of experiential simulation that incorporates aspects of Alternate Reality Games (ARGs) to increase immersion and teach workplace literacies in the technical communication classroom. We explore results from a pilot test of Microcore with an undergraduate technical communication course, identifying design strategies that …

Testing The Test: Expanding The Dialogue On Technical Writing Assessment In The Academy And Workplace, Lindsay Tanner, Jonathan Balzotti Jan 2019

Testing The Test: Expanding The Dialogue On Technical Writing Assessment In The Academy And Workplace, Lindsay Tanner, Jonathan Balzotti

Faculty Publications

The small amount of work on workplace writing assessment has focused almost entirely on student readiness for professional writing or included case studies of employer expectations for new writers. While these studies provide insight into current pedagogies for technical writing and writing instruction in general, the main conclusion to be drawn from them is the unsatisfactory number of recent graduates who display workplace readiness. In this article, we explore writing assessment research in both the academy and the workplace and attempt to identify ways in which the academy’s assessment practices lead, lag behind, or simply differ from writing assessment in …

An Empirical Study Of Service Recovery Quality And Customer Retention, Kristen Bell Detienne, Joan Westwood Jan 2019

An Empirical Study Of Service Recovery Quality And Customer Retention, Kristen Bell Detienne, Joan Westwood

Faculty Publications

This article proposes and empirically tests an original model of service recovery. Customer loyalty significantly impacts a company’s profitability. Customer satisfaction influences customer loyalty, and perceived recovery quality affects satisfaction. Surveys were mailed to 1,476 customers of a large financial services firm. This study examined how customers’ perceptions of the quality of service recovery efforts differs among customer groups. Customer groups were formed according to differing levels of post-recovery customer loyalty in order to study the impact of perceived service recovery quality on customer loyalty. The results of the study indicate that high- and low-loyalty customer groups differ in their …

Job Embeddedness And Turnover Intentions: The Moderating Role Of Affectivity Traits, Career Stages And Perceptions Of Organisational Politics, Emmanuel Twumasi Ampofo Jan 2019

Job Embeddedness And Turnover Intentions: The Moderating Role Of Affectivity Traits, Career Stages And Perceptions Of Organisational Politics, Emmanuel Twumasi Ampofo

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The study tested the applicability of job embeddedness (JE) theory in Ghana. It also examined moderating effects of affectivity traits, career stage and perceptions of organisational politics (POP) on the JE–turnover intentions relationship. Analyses revealed that composite JE and its dimensions and sub-dimensions (except community fit) were negatively related to turnover intentions. Affectivity traits, POP and career stages moderated the JE–turnover intentions relationship. The study expands the predictive validity of JE to Ghana and adds to the few moderators that have been identified in previous studies. Strategies for increasing managerial employees’ embeddedness and reducing their turnover are proposed.

International Auditing Considerations At Carrefour S.A., Timothy Seidel, Bill Tayler Jan 2019

International Auditing Considerations At Carrefour S.A., Timothy Seidel, Bill Tayler

Faculty Publications

Carrefour S.A. is a multinational retailer headquartered in France that operates over 10,800 stores worldwide consisting of hypermarkets (a supermarket and department store under one roof), supermarkets, and convenience stores, as well as e-commerce websites. The objective of this three-part case study is to expose students to international (or multi-national client) audit issues/considerations. Multi-national clients often have multiple locations or components that require separately audited financial information that is included in consolidated or group financial statements. The first case exposes students to the need to allocate materiality across components of a group audit. The second part of the case then …

What Affects Do Managers Have On Employee Performance And Turnover?, Devan O'Donnell Jan 2019

What Affects Do Managers Have On Employee Performance And Turnover?, Devan O'Donnell

Theses

This dissertation focused on whether managers affect employee performance and turnover. In particular, this research focused on multinational organisations in Ireland. The focal point was to gain an understanding of this topic from a manger and employee point of view. For the sake of this research the managers that were involved were only managers of employees and not other managers.

This research project adopts a mixed research method of data collections. It applies both face to face interviews with managers and online questionnaires with employees.

The findings revelled valuable insight into the relationship between managers and employee performance and turnover. …

Dark tourism is connected to sites of death, the macabre and suffering and there are many sites in Ireland that fit this description. Examples include prisons, famine sites, graveyards, sites of terrorist attacks and many more. In this document the term dark tourism is thoroughly researched via secondary sources to provide a foundation of understanding. By including this academic research from journals and books, the researcher is provided with the background information necessary to understand the importance of dark tourism and to identify gaps in knowledge suitable …

Trading Regularity And Fund Performance, Jeffrey Busse, Lin Tong, Qing Tong, Zhe Zhang Jan 2019

Trading Regularity And Fund Performance, Jeffrey Busse, Lin Tong, Qing Tong, Zhe Zhang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We construct a new measure of trading regularity, capturing the extent to which investors trade on a regular basis. Institutional investors that regularly trade outperform those that trade less regularly. The performance of funds that regularly trade persists for at least a year. Among those who trade most regularly, larger funds perform relatively worse, because they incur higher transaction costs associated with their larger trades. Institutions that regularly trade generate superior performance, in part, by behaving as contrarians and by trading more aggressively on information. By contrast, we find no relation between trading regularity and performance among index funds.

Volatility Spillovers Among Oil And Stock Markets In The Us And Saudi Arabia, Marinela Adriana Finta, Bart Frijns, Alireza Tourani-Rad Jan 2019

Volatility Spillovers Among Oil And Stock Markets In The Us And Saudi Arabia, Marinela Adriana Finta, Bart Frijns, Alireza Tourani-Rad

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In this article, we use high frequency data and an identification via changes in volatility approach to assess the volatility spillovers among oil and the US and Saudi Arabian stock markets. We document the existence of asymmetry in contemporaneous spillover effects. Particularly, during the times when oil’s trading hours overlap with the US and Saudi Arabian stock markets, the volatility spillover from oil to the stock markets is higher than the other way around. We highlight the importance of taking into consideration the information present during continuous trading hours of oil, especially during simultaneous trading hours with the stock markets. …

Perceived Product Creativity And Mental Contrasting: Desired Future On Consumers’ Product Replacement Decisions, Yong Seok Sohn, Kun Woo Yoo, Jin K. Han Jan 2019

Perceived Product Creativity And Mental Contrasting: Desired Future On Consumers’ Product Replacement Decisions, Yong Seok Sohn, Kun Woo Yoo, Jin K. Han

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Consumers often imagine what it would be like to own a new product. Does engaging in such thoughts on desired future impact consumers’ purchase intentions, and if so, what is the underlying process? This study sets out to investigate the posed questions by assessing self-regulatory strategies consumers employ upon pondering on a desired future. Based on Oettingen’s fantasy realization model, the authors take a comparative approach of two modes on desired future—mental contrasting and indulging—en route to purchase intentions. In mental contrasting, an individual juxtaposes a desired future with his/her present reality, whereas, indulging is simply envisioning a desired future. …

Head Above The Parapet: How Minority Subordinates Influence Group Outcomes And The Consequences They Face, Burak Oc, Michael R. Bashshur, Celia Moore Jan 2019

Head Above The Parapet: How Minority Subordinates Influence Group Outcomes And The Consequences They Face, Burak Oc, Michael R. Bashshur, Celia Moore

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The vast majority of research on power, social, and minority influence treats those who are recipients of powerholders’ decisions (i.e., subordinates) as an undifferentiated group, overlooking how recipients may respond in unique ways to the decisions that affect them. In this paper we examine the role of minority subordinates in shaping how powerholders allocate resources. We also explore how psychological distance between the minority subordinate and powerholder moderates this relationship, as well as the individual consequences minority subordinates face for articulating their unique opinions. In three experimental studies, we show that even as a lone voice, the feedback of a …

Ecological Rationality: Fast-And-Frugal Heuristics For Managerial Decision Making Under Uncertainty, Shenghua Luan, Jochen Reb, Gerd Gigerenzer Jan 2019

Ecological Rationality: Fast-And-Frugal Heuristics For Managerial Decision Making Under Uncertainty, Shenghua Luan, Jochen Reb, Gerd Gigerenzer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Heuristics are often viewed as inferior to “rational” strategies that exhaustively search and process information. Introducing the theoretical perspective of ecological rationality, we challenge this view and argue that under conditions of uncertainty common to managerial decision making, managers can actually make better decisions using fast-and-frugal heuristics. Within the context of personnel selection, we show that a heuristic called Δ-inference can more accurately predict which of two job applicants would perform better in the future than logistic regression, a prototypical rational strategy. Using data from 236 applicants at an airline company, we demonstrate in Study 1 that despite searching less …

Situational Judgment Tests As Measures Of 21st Century Skills: Evidence Across Europe And Latin America, Christoph Herde, Filip Lievens, Emily G. Solberg, Harbaugh Jan L., Mark H. Strong, Gary J. Burkholder Jan 2019

Situational Judgment Tests As Measures Of 21st Century Skills: Evidence Across Europe And Latin America, Christoph Herde, Filip Lievens, Emily G. Solberg, Harbaugh Jan L., Mark H. Strong, Gary J. Burkholder

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Over the years, various governmental, employment, and academic organizations have identified a list of skills to successfully master the challenges of the 21st century. So far, an adequate assessment of these skills across countries has remained challenging. Limitations inherent in the use of self-reports (e.g., lack of self-insight, socially desirable responding, response style bias, reference group bias, etc.) have spurred on the search for methods that could complement or even substitute self-report inventories. Situational judgment tests (SJTs) have been proposed as one of the complements/alternatives to the traditional self-report inventories. SJTs are low-fidelity simulations that confront participants with multiple domain-relevant …

The Use Of Management Control Systems In Social Enterprises, Varaporn Pothipala Jan 2019

The Use Of Management Control Systems In Social Enterprises, Varaporn Pothipala

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Social Enterprises (SEs) have progressively grown, filling gaps where government and the market fail; that is, when public-sector goods/services are unsatisfactory to support social needs, and for-profit organizations cannot make sufficient profit in providing those goods/services (Austin, Stevenson, & Wei-Skillern, 2006; Haugh, 2005). SEs have emerged to tackle persistent and complex social problems. In Southeast Asia, many social problems (i.e. poverty, unemployment, social and economic inequality) have long been recognised and they persist overtime, especially since the Asian financial crisis in 1997, with SE being introduced in Southeast Asia after the crisis (Defourny & Kim, 2011; Kerlin, 2010). SEs are …

Sustainable Digital Finance In Asia: Creating Environmental Impact Through Bank Transformation, Ryan Knowles Merrill, Simon J.D. Schillebeeckx, Sofie Blakstad

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Data is arguably the most valuable resource in the digital economy. Used effectively and responsibly it has the potential to serve as a driving force in creating a more sustainable world. The potential is especially potent in the financial sector given its central place in the financial system, and its access to and use of data.Using technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), mobile technology, internet of things (IoT), and the cloud, data can be captured by sensors in the environment and structured to integrate sustainability into existing financial products and services. These can be creatively combined into entirely new …

Managing Patient Expectations Through Understanding Health Service Experiences, Benedetta Crisafulli, Mohammad Wasil, Jaywant Singh, Sabine Benoit

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The ever-increasing demand for health care services, together with heightened expectations for quality care, continue to put pressures on health care professionals. In this editorial, we introduce our perspective on managing patient expectations through gaining research insights on health service experiences of patients and their support network. Drawing upon research from social psychology, we examine the types of threat that typically confront patients during health care service experiences, and their subsequent coping strategies. We call for enhanced focus on social science research for effective delivery of high-quality health care services.

Transport 2040: Truck Platooning: The Australian Case : Technology And Transformation, World Maritime University

Reports

This study details a transport mode, a specific technology option in a specific country. In particular, this study covers truck platooning in road transport, with the focus on Australia. The Transport 2040: Automation, Technology, Employment – The Future of Work Report identified a series of key trends in the context of future transport technologies vis-à-vis transport workers’ employment situation and the wider ramifications on the market. Some of these trends are mode-specific, technology-specific, or specific to a certain geographic location and thus they do not develop in the same manner in all local contexts.

A New Business Model For Small Food Business In Thailand, Burim Otakanon Jan 2019

A New Business Model For Small Food Business In Thailand, Burim Otakanon

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This research aims to investigate the core components of the food business and to develop the food business model for the small food firm. The study is conducting by using a mix-method approach. The finding shows that the food business model constellates six core components, which are innovation, value proposition, value delivery, revenue model, compelling strategy, and the firm’s performance. The six components are statistically validated the model relationship by using a correlation coefficient. The correlation indicates that a change of a component affects all the other components in the model as a whole. This study complementarity extends the contribution …
