Humanitarian Aid Logistics: Response Strategies In The 2015 Refugee Crisis, Molly O'Connell

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Humanitarian aid logistics is an emerging field that applies principles of supply chain management and logistics to the humanitarian relief sector. This thesis explores humanitarian aid logistics strategies in the context of the 2015 Refugee Crisis. An unprecedented number of refugees sought asylum in Europe beginning in 2015, where European officials and humanitarian organizations were largely unprepared to provide for them. The 2015 Refugee Crisis offers a unique perspective on humanitarian aid logistics because it requires both short-term and long-term response strategies. Through the framework of management science, a subfield of supply chain management, and logistics, this thesis creates a …

The Future Of The Renewable Fuel Standard, Jacob Urban

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Persistent uncertainty about the future of the Renewable Fuel Standard led to an analysis of the policy’s language and the varying degrees of political support for the program in the Senate. Applying probabilities to the various conceived scenarios resulted in a 40% change that the program continues in its current form in perpetuity. The report finds that a Democratic Congress would implement legislation that focuses on the policy’s missed environmental goals. Conversely, a Republican Congress would lead to the most uncertainty in the market due to competing views of the RFS within the program. With a narrow Republican majority, legislation …

Profile Imperfect: How Do Young Urban Millennials Perceive The Impact Of Tinder In Their Lives?, Hairol Ma

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

As Tinder, Bumble, and other swipe-based dating apps usher departure from detailed information-entering dating sites like OkCupid and Match.com, how do young urban millennials perceive the impact of Tinder in their lives? Fifteen individuals aged 18-25 were interviewed on their use of swipe dating apps. Additionally, two ethnographies were conducted. Results showed that by commodifying other users on the app as a list of features rather than a holistic individual, users subsequently ascribed the same judgements upon themselves. The resulting assets for an overarching campaign aims to urge users to practice view themselves (and subsequently others) beyond their Tinder profile …

Sensable: A Comprehensive Exploration Of Designing For Sensory Interaction To Create Dynamic & Inclusive User Experiences In The Context Of Sustainable Fashion, Emma Comtois

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Often, the default in interaction design is to focus on visual interactions, but this leaves a lot to be desired when people can’t interact with those experiences because of an impairment. This approach is further limited when there are singular experiences for all users. To combat this, I completed an exploration of how to design sensory interactions using a combination of motion, visual and voice design, partnered with artificial intelligence to create expansive, accessible experiences. To give this exploration real-life context, I created a series of journeys for users who want to learn about sustainable fashion, an industry with a …

Understanding Volatility: An Analysis Of The Stock Market Return-Variance Correlation, Richard Traub

Honors Scholar Theses

This paper attempts to explain the negative correlation between stock market returns in the United States (measured by the risk premium of the S&P 500 Index) and the respective volatility of these returns. The academic research regarding two primary schools of thought on this issue, the volatility feedback effect and the leverage effect, is furthered as potential explanations for this phenomenon. A tertiary explanation relating to investor behavior is also explored as a viable cause. In order to empirically study this relationship, I examine the risk premium quintiles and the corresponding CBOE Volatility Index levels for the time-series dating from …

Dividend Payments And Excess Cash: An Experimental Analysis, Z. Tingting Jia, Matthew J. Mcmahon May 2019

Dividend Payments And Excess Cash: An Experimental Analysis, Z. Tingting Jia, Matthew J. Mcmahon

Economics & Finance Faculty Publications

There is an observed positive correlation between the size of firms’ dividends and the amount of cash they keep on hand. We specify a new channel of precautionary cash holdings as related to dividend-smoothing, which predicts that increased dividends should cause firms to keep more cash on hand. In the reverse direction, theory’s predictions depend on the source of the increased cash on hand. General dividend smoothing theory predicts that temporary increases in cash due to natural market fluctuations should not affect dividends. If the increased cash is due to a permanent increase in profitability, both the marginal benefit and …

Some people use these characterological traits to their benefit in positions of leadership. In this study, students from a Christian university in the Pacific Northwest were selected to participate in a survey, based upon their chosen major (Business, Psychology, and Religion). It was hypothesized that Business students would have the highest total levels of psychopathy and religion majors would show the lowest levels of psychopathy. Since religion often serves as a protective factor, it is …

This will examine the current literature surrounding the sale of alcohol at collegiate events, tailgating culture and what this all looks like in the real world. By examining schools and programs who currently offer the sale of …

Decision-makers and researchers can benefit from our survey since it introduces a structured analysis and recommendations as to which quantitative methods can be used at different levels of capacity resilience. Finally, the gaps and limitations of existing SCR literature are identified and future research opportunities are suggested.

Business/Business Administration

Devices such as the Google Home and Amazon Echo are great sources of digital evidence and artifacts due to the fact that much of the data these devices generate are stored both locally and in the cloud. In this paper, techniques used to retrieve this information are discussed. Although some of these techniques require an analyst to have an individual’s login credentials, other techniques that focus on the data stored in a user’s phone can be …

You Might Just Surprise Yourself: When Will Consumers Purchase A Surprise Product As A Self-Gift?, Kelly Morrow

Business/Business Administration

Consumers are becoming increasingly self-oriented in their purchase and consumption behaviors. Self-gifts have proliferated on the market, especially self-gifts that contain an element of surprise, which can be seen with the rise in popularity of subscription boxes. Surprise has been found to enhance the function of self-gifts, but it can also result in post-purchase regret if the surprise did not meet consumer expectations. Typically, individuals consume self-gifts as forms of indulgences, rewards, and as mood-regulatory devices. Based on these findings, this paper examines the relationship between three mood conditions (positive, neutral, and negative) and consumers’ likeliness to purchase a surprise …
