Marketing Channel Effectiveness Of New Medications/Medical Technology, Hadley Mccormick Jun 2019

Marketing Channel Effectiveness Of New Medications/Medical Technology, Hadley Mccormick

Celebration of Learning

This research project will study what marketing platforms/channels are most effective in the dissemination of new medical product news. Many people like myself have an illness/disease that requires daily medication, or require the daily use of a medical device. Due to the increasing influence of Direct to Consumer advertising of pharmaceuticals and the constant development of new medications and devices, patients may now more often go to the doctor with perceptions of what they should do to manage their illness/disease. This study aims to look at how the developers of these medications/medical devices promote their products currently and how certain …

Cognitive Patterns Of Information Addiction, Rayman Meservy Jun 2019

Cognitive Patterns Of Information Addiction, Rayman Meservy

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As suggested by the title, this project focused on understanding the Cognitive Patterns of Information Addiction. Throughout the course of the project we have learned quite a bit about this concept and have refined our narrow focus on addiction to a more broad focus on understanding the cognitive patterns associated with information processing of social media. While we have made certain discoveries, this project has really just laid the initial ground work for this research stream. Students have been instrumental in creating experimental instruments, conducting literature reviews, designing experiments, and collecting data. We have presented these ideas at some of …

Understanding The Causes And Consequences Of The Impostor Phenomenon, Jeffrey Bednar Jun 2019

Understanding The Causes And Consequences Of The Impostor Phenomenon, Jeffrey Bednar

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The MEG grant I was awarded was used to fund the work of several undergraduate and graduate students as we sought to present academic research and generate academic research articles for publication in various journals. This included research we have been conducting related to the “Impostor Syndrome”, where some high-achieving individuals fail to internalize their accomplishments and experience feelings of perceived fraudulence (Clance & Imes, 1978).

Validating Market Segmentation Solutions, Marc Dotson Jun 2019

Validating Market Segmentation Solutions, Marc Dotson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I set out to apply the MEG Grant to a project entitled “Validating Market Segmentation Solutions.” Early on in the process, it became clear that, while this project was and still is of managerial importance, I could do more academically relevant project work with more students if I were to switch gears to a number of other projects. Instead of the single project, the grant has been used over the past two years to help fund mentoring activities with students on the following projects:

Pragmatic Rigor: Principles And Criteria For Conducting And Evaluating Practitioner Scholarship, Daniel Robey, Wallace T.F Taylor, Louis J. Grabowski Jun 2019

Pragmatic Rigor: Principles And Criteria For Conducting And Evaluating Practitioner Scholarship, Daniel Robey, Wallace T.F Taylor, Louis J. Grabowski

Engaged Management ReView

Practitioner scholarship is a promising avenue for addressing the gap between academic research and practice. To advance the objective of publishing the findings of practitioner scholarship, we develop the concept of pragmatic rigor, which is intended to complement but not replace scientific rigor. We propose four principles of pragmatic rigor: relevance, actionability, comprehensibility, and ethical reasoning. For each principle, we develop associated criteria for conducting and evaluating practical research. Pragmatic principles are relevant to the research process, from choice of topic to final evaluation by journal reviewers. We believe that applying these principles can advance the practical value of studies …

Problem-Solving In Complex Settings: Techniques For Crossing Organizational Boundaries, Adrian Wolfberg Jun 2019

Problem-Solving In Complex Settings: Techniques For Crossing Organizational Boundaries, Adrian Wolfberg

Engaged Management ReView

Solving problems in complex organizations requires managers to successfully navigate organizational boundaries. Yet, crossing boundaries can be an extremely difficult endeavor that requires sophisticated and multifaceted skills and behaviors. In this paper, we introduce boundary permeability to expand on the available boundary crossing techniques identified by Carlile (2004). Acknowledging the messiness in organizational life, we propose a set of techniques requiring that managers consider the multiplicity of boundary conditions and, in many cases, use multiple techniques simultaneously. We describe an innovative, real-world, problem-solving program within the U.S. Department of Defense to demonstrate the practical application of the proposed techniques and …

Neurosecurity: Comprehending Security Messages, Zachary Vance, Bonnie Anderson Jun 2019

Neurosecurity: Comprehending Security Messages, Zachary Vance, Bonnie Anderson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The comprehension of security messages can be a difficult task to decipher, as comprehension works through a series of stages. The four major steps in comprehension are attention, semantics, syntax, and pragmatics, as outlined by figure 1 below. Through the use of eye-tracking, we were able to focus on parts of security messages that inhibited understanding and make changes to ensure users were following through each step of comprehension and therefore making wise security decisions. Eye-tracking proved to be an excellent tool for comprehension as the data gives immediate measures of attention, with difficult words or phrases being stared at …

The Financing Of Transportation Firms Using Rail, Truck, Air And Ship To Test Capital Structure Theories, David Wilson, James Brau Jun 2019

The Financing Of Transportation Firms Using Rail, Truck, Air And Ship To Test Capital Structure Theories, David Wilson, James Brau

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Our project sought to test traditional theories of capital structure (e.g., Ang & Peterson, 1986, Rajan & Zingales, 1995, Titman, & Wessels, 1988 DeAngelo & Masulis,1980, Leland, 1994, and Modigliani & Miller, 1958) through the analysis of a naturally occurring experiment produced among various transportation industry sectors (i.e. rail, truck, air, ship). The transportation industry is novel because the four types of transportation methods all have the same objective – to move product from one place to the other (Carter, Rogers, & Choi, 2015, and Gelsomino, Mangiaracina, Perego, & Tumino, 2016) – while each sector faces unique governmental regulation. Their …

Meta-Analytic Investigation Of Physical Ability Subgroup Differences Based On Age And Race, Cody Reeves Jun 2019

Meta-Analytic Investigation Of Physical Ability Subgroup Differences Based On Age And Race, Cody Reeves

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The academic objectives are still in the process of being met as the research effort is ongoing. We had hoped to have an academic manuscript submitted during the Fall 2018 semester, however this proved impossible as the project timeline was set back due to the mental health needs of a participating student research assistant and the evacuation of an academic collaborator at Pepperdine University (due to the Woolsey Fire). Fortunately, we have made strong progress on the project and it is anticipated that a final manuscript will be ready for submission sometime during the Winter 2019 semester. That said, early …

Risk Perceptions Among Religiously Practicing Tourists: Are They Group Differentiated?, Aliza Jonas, Lee Cahaner, Yoel Mansfeld Jun 2019

Risk Perceptions Among Religiously Practicing Tourists: Are They Group Differentiated?, Aliza Jonas, Lee Cahaner, Yoel Mansfeld

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Religiousness and religious affiliation as a cultural phenomenon generating an array of travel risk perceptions has attracted only a handful of researchers so far. Using the case of the Ultra Orthodox Haredi community in Israel, we explored how belonging to a specific religious group within this community generates different risk perception constructs. Using the theoretical ‘Value Stretch’ model embedded into a ‘Nominal Group Technique’ methodology, we revealed that, generally, risk perceptions among religiously different Haredi groups are group differentiated. This is a result of various religious, cultural, social, and environmental differences, which characterise each Haredi subgroup. The findings call for …

Primo Levi’S Journey Home From Auschwitz In The Light Of Ancient Civic Pilgrimage: Levi’S The Truce As A Form Of Theōria, Robert Pirro Jun 2019

Primo Levi’S Journey Home From Auschwitz In The Light Of Ancient Civic Pilgrimage: Levi’S The Truce As A Form Of Theōria, Robert Pirro

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Primo Levi, a Jewish-Italian chemist captured with other members of a partisan band in German-occupied northern Italy and deported to Auschwitz, survived his ordeal to write one of the more acclaimed testimonies of Nazi inhumanity, Se questo è un uomo (Survival in Auschwitz). Taking as a starting point a parallel Levi explicitly draws between the aims of postwar pilgrimages to Auschwitz commemorations and the effect he hoped his books would have on his readers, this article shows how his second book, La tregua (The Reawakening), which relates his roundabout and oft-delayed journey home to Turin after the Red Army’s liberation …

Moderating Effect Of The Use Of Ewom On Subjective Norms, Behavioural Control And Religious Tourist Revisit Intention, Ofunre C. Iriobe, Elizabeth O. Abiola-Oke Jun 2019

Moderating Effect Of The Use Of Ewom On Subjective Norms, Behavioural Control And Religious Tourist Revisit Intention, Ofunre C. Iriobe, Elizabeth O. Abiola-Oke

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Religious activities are a common topic of discussion on various platforms and online forums in Nigeria. These online interactions shape opinions and attitudes of tourist to a religious destination. The use of electronic word of mouth has become a factor in influencing behavioural intention. Hence, this study investigated the relationship between the use of eWOM and tourist revisiting intention to a religious destination and the effect of the use of eWOM on the relationship between Subjective Norm, Perceived Behavioural control and Revisit intention of visitors to religious destinations.

The hypotheses for the study was tested using a Hierarchical Regression model. …

Nexus Between Religious Journeys And Economic Influences – The Case Of Saudi Arabia, Rozina Shaheen Jun 2019

Nexus Between Religious Journeys And Economic Influences – The Case Of Saudi Arabia, Rozina Shaheen

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

This research investigates the role of economic factors in affecting faith-based travelling to Saudi Arabia and suggests GDP per capita income, relative price, population size, trade volume and cost of travelling as major determinants of religious tourism to the country of destination. This study is an important contribution to the literature on religious tourism as it provides empirical linkages between spiritual decisions and economic influences. In addition, this study adds new propositions to theory and identifies religious tourism as a ‘Veblen good’. This research uses monthly data covering the time period 2004 m1 - 2015m12. It employs an ARDL bound …

Searching For The Green Man: Researching Pilgrimage In Israel/Palestine And Egypt, Mary Thurlkill Jun 2019

Searching For The Green Man: Researching Pilgrimage In Israel/Palestine And Egypt, Mary Thurlkill

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

This article examines contemporary pilgrimage in Israel / Palestine and Egypt, based upon field work conducted December 2017-February 2018 and personal narrative. My argument is twofold: first, I contend that Pilgrimage Studies allows scholars to move beyond reductive labels and consider the implicit ‘messiness’ of religious faith and ritual praxis. I introduce the Islamic al-Khidr and Moses story from Qur’an 18.60-82, as an interpretative model, suggesting that rigid categorization—especially concerning religious identity and sectarian division—promotes a false narrative of monolithic faith traditions that, upon closer examination, does not fully exist. Second, by referencing my ethnographic experiences, I consider pilgrimage as …

Missionaries On A Pilgrimage, Or Pilgrims On A Mission? Elements Of Pilgrimage In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints Missionary Experience, Elisha Mcintyre, Daniel H. Olsen Jun 2019

Missionaries On A Pilgrimage, Or Pilgrims On A Mission? Elements Of Pilgrimage In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints Missionary Experience, Elisha Mcintyre, Daniel H. Olsen

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

The purpose of this paper is to consider the ways in which proselytizing missions by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are pilgrimage-like. After outlining the historical and theological background behind the Church’s missionary efforts and discuss how this missionary work is organized both practically and social, the similarities between Church missions and religious pilgrimage are compared based on six themes: journeying and the sacred, liminality, communitas, hardships, status, and change and failure.

Deferred Taxes And Cash Flow Predictability, Kaleb Norwald, Jake Thornock Jun 2019

Deferred Taxes And Cash Flow Predictability, Kaleb Norwald, Jake Thornock

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Companies are sometimes required to pay taxes on events that have not yet occurred. This tax is called a deferred tax asset or DTA. These companies will receive a refund on this special type of tax, but the refund won’t be dispersed until years later. (Sometimes, this can take up to twenty years.) The slow reimbursement of a tax refund inhibits a company’s ability to grow, hire, and innovate as it unnecessarily constrains cash flow. Additionally, since this type of tax can be 7-13% of annual operating profits, the refunds are often very sizeable amounts.

The reimbursement process can be …

Measuring Compassion In The Workforce, Haley Kirk, Jeffrey Jenkins Jun 2019

Measuring Compassion In The Workforce, Haley Kirk, Jeffrey Jenkins

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My ORCA project is designed to measure a person’s level of compassion using mouse-cursor tracking. The field of compassion is relatively untouched in the world of research, and I wanted to be one of the first to effectively measure compassion. I also wanted this measurement to be easily implemented into the workforce. To achieve this goal, I designed two activities. The first activity is a game that is designed to gauge a person’s level of compassion. The second activity uses mouse-tracking technology to measure compassion in an even more accurate fashion. Using these two activities, my mentor and I created …
