Importance Of Subjective Financial Knowledge And Perceived Credit Score In Payday Loan Use, Jae Min Lee, Narang Park, Wookjae Heo Sep 2019

Importance Of Subjective Financial Knowledge And Perceived Credit Score In Payday Loan Use, Jae Min Lee, Narang Park, Wookjae Heo

Consumer Sciences Faculty Publications

This study examined the factors associated with consumers’ decisions to use payday loans. Using a sample of 24,201 respondents from the 2015 National Financial Capability Study (NFCS), structural equation modeling was used to analyze the relationships among the variables. The results indicated that payday loan use was associated with a series of consumers’ socio-psychological factors, including financial knowledge, perceived credit score, credit-card payment problems, and having emergency funds. The findings suggested that, to improve borrowing decisions and industry practices, discussions about consumers’ payday loan use and its underlying repayment problems should encompass policy intervention and institutional attention, rather than focusing …

Fashion Brand Love: Application Of A Cognition–Affect–Conation Model, Tae-Im Han, Dooyoung Choi Sep 2019

Fashion Brand Love: Application Of A Cognition–Affect–Conation Model, Tae-Im Han, Dooyoung Choi

STEMPS Faculty Publications

A large numbers of studies have supported the crucial role of brand love in consumer–brand relationships; however, research that examines fashion brand love and its relationship with cognitive aspects and self-concept congruency remains limited. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify important factors that are associated with fashion brand love. A questionnaire in which participants provided self-reported responses was created to measure the constructs and structural equation modeling (SEM) and independent sample t-tests were conducted to test the hypothesized relationships. Our results indicated that consumers who know more about fashion brands are more likely to have stronger emotional …

Ndikimi I Të Hyrave Për Kokë Banori (Gdp Per Capita) Në Lumturi: Analizë Ekonometrike E Rastit Të Kosovës, Anila Radoniqi

Theses and Dissertations

Punimi ekzaminon …

Theses and Dissertations

Estimation Of Sacrifice Ratio For The Nigerian Economy Using A Time Varying Adrl Approach, E. T. Adamgbe, M. O. Abeng, A. A. Omosola Sep 2019

Estimation Of Sacrifice Ratio For The Nigerian Economy Using A Time Varying Adrl Approach, E. T. Adamgbe, M. O. Abeng, A. A. Omosola

Economic and Financial Review

Monetary policy in the last few decades had focused on creating the enabling conditions for sustainable economic growth, using the level of inflation as the pivotal tool, complemented with central banks’ independence and monetary policy transparency. However, attaining the delicate balance of achieving low inflation and optimal output, with minimal tradeoffs has been a cause for concern for policy makers. Thus, the measurement of the output loss, arising from the inflation-output tradeoff, forms the fulcrum of this study. This study estimates the sacrifice ratio using a state space methodology in an aggregate supply framework to adjust for real business cycle …

Investigating The Impact Of Exchange Rate Volatility On Naira Exchange Rate In Nigeria, A. T. Adenekan, G. K. Sanni, A. I. Itodo Sep 2019

Investigating The Impact Of Exchange Rate Volatility On Naira Exchange Rate In Nigeria, A. T. Adenekan, G. K. Sanni, A. I. Itodo

Economic and Financial Review

This study investigates the impact of naira-to-dollar exchange rate volatility on naira exchange rate returns in Nigeria. Using daily percentage exchange rate returns of the naira per US-Dollar, the study estimated an AR(5)-TGARCH (1,1) to examine whether there is an existence of asymmetry in the time path of the naira exchange rate volatility. The findings indicated that exchange rate volatility leads to increase in exchange rate returns (depreciation). Also, there is the presence of asymmetry in the movement of the exchange rate volatility, such that negative shocks that cause exchange rate returns to fall lead to fall in volatility by …

Institutional Quality, Financial Inclusion And Inclusive Growth: Causality Evidence From Nigeria, G. O. Olanrewaju, S. A. Tella, B. A. Adesoye Sep 2019

Institutional Quality, Financial Inclusion And Inclusive Growth: Causality Evidence From Nigeria, G. O. Olanrewaju, S. A. Tella, B. A. Adesoye

Economic and Financial Review

The study examines the causal interactions among the institutional, financial and inclusive growth variables by employing Toda-Yamamoto (TY) Granger non-causality test within the augmented VAR framework. Annual time series, data from 1998 to 2017, were used. The TY analysis showed that all the variables, with the exception of financial inclusion index, Granger-caused inclusive growth, but without any evidence of feedback. However, a bidirectional causal relationship was found between inclusive finance and the interaction of institutional quality and financial inclusion. Thus, the null hypothesis of block exogeneity can be refuted when real GDP per person employed (RGDPE) is taken as the …

Vita Programs On A College Campus: Create A Win-Win For Students, Professors, Alumni, Employers And Community, Michelle Freeman, Gary Burkette

ETSU Faculty Works

In the spring 2017 semester, East Tennessee State University (ETSU) hosted an on-campus Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Through a series of discussions with other department faculty, it was decided to offer the experience as an internship for accounting students who had completed the federal income tax course in our accounting curriculum. Although one could easily see the benefits of VITA for taxpayers who received the service, I personally had no idea what a blessing the experience would be, nor did I recognize the positive ripple effects it would have for students, alumni and employers. This article will explain …

Family Firms And Labor Market Regulation, Morten Bennedsen, Sterling Huang, Hannes F. Wagner, Stefan Zeume Sep 2019

Family Firms And Labor Market Regulation, Morten Bennedsen, Sterling Huang, Hannes F. Wagner, Stefan Zeume

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

In a panel across twenty-eight countries over 10 years, we show that family firms on average enjoy performance advantages over nonfamily firms only when labor markets are less regulated. We confirm this result in a matched firm sample using a survey-based instrument as a family control. Furthermore, family firms exhibit lower variation in employment levels in less-regulated labor markets, supporting the notion that labor relations drive family firms’ performance advantages. Our results are consistent with the notion that both family ownership and labor market reforms provide employment protection and thus partly substitute as governance mechanisms.

Deciphering Financial Statements In Annual Reports, Themin Suwardy, Yew Kee Ho, Edmund Keung Sep 2019

Deciphering Financial Statements In Annual Reports, Themin Suwardy, Yew Kee Ho, Edmund Keung

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

In the first of a three-part weekly series on financial literacy, SMU Dean of Postgraduate Professional Programmes and Associate Professor of Accounting (Practice) Themin Suwardy, SIT’s Professor Ho Yew Kee and Associate Professor Edmund Keong from NUS discussed the importance of learning to read and analyse financial statements. They opined that being able to decipher financial statements is critical if an investor wants to have a real understanding of a company's profitability, liquidity and cash position. This will equip them with useful information to make informed decisions.

Board Committees In Corporate Governance: A Cross‐Disciplinary Review And Agenda For The Future, Kalin Kolev, David B. Wangrow, Vincent L. Barker Iii, Donald J. Schepker Sep 2019

Board Committees In Corporate Governance: A Cross‐Disciplinary Review And Agenda For The Future, Kalin Kolev, David B. Wangrow, Vincent L. Barker Iii, Donald J. Schepker

Management Faculty Research and Publications

The importance of board committees – specialized subgroups that exist to perform many of the board's most critical functions, such as setting executive compensation, identifying potential board members, and overseeing financial reporting – has grown over time due to increased legal requirements and greater complexity of the environment in which firms operate. This has resulted in a large body of work examining board committees across the accounting, finance, and management disciplines. However, this research has developed rather independently within each discipline, preventing scholars and practitioners from developing a comprehensive understanding of board committees. To address this issue, we conduct a …

Essays On New Keynesian Term Premium Model With Financial Risks, Weiguo Fu Sep 2019

Essays On New Keynesian Term Premium Model With Financial Risks, Weiguo Fu

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation studies the modeling of U.S. Treasury (UST) yield curve term premia under the New Keynesian (NK) framework. Loosely speaking, term premium is the difference between a government bond’s yield for a specific tenor and the average of the expected short rates up to that tenor. The dissertation is divided into three chapters. The first chapter proposes a New Keynesianism-based macro-finance model estimated by a one-step full information maximum likelihood (FIML) method. The second chapter shows that the one-step FIML method may produce estimation biases, which result in biased expected short rates and term premia. The chapter then presents …

Cost Stickiness And Supply Chain Bargaining Power, Binghao (Jimmy) Zhao Sep 2019

Cost Stickiness And Supply Chain Bargaining Power, Binghao (Jimmy) Zhao

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Given the essential role of supply chains in the economy, furthering our understanding of the interactions between trade partners is important. In this paper, I study the relation between cost stickiness and bargaining power over supply chain partners. I document evidence consistent with the argument that firms wield supply chain bargaining power to avoid cost stickiness by shifting high adjustment costs onto their trade partners. In particular, I show that the level of SG&A and COGS stickiness is negatively associated with firms’ bargaining power over their suppliers and customers. My results are robust to using industry competition as an alternative …

Runaway: A History Of Postwar New York In Four Factories, Andy Battle Sep 2019

Runaway: A History Of Postwar New York In Four Factories, Andy Battle

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

At midcentury, New York City was among the preeminent manufacturing centers in the United States. Within a generation, this manufacturing economy suffered an extraordinary collapse. Beginning in the 1950s, workers and their unions began to use the term “runaway” to describe factories that pulled up stakes in New York and set them back down in other climes. This dissertation explores the deindustrialization of New York City through case studies of “runaway” plants, or factories that left New York for the American South or abroad between the years 1945 and 1975.

In general, the manufacturers that remained in New York at …

Externalities Of Cds Trading: The Effect On Industry Peer Firms’ Cost Of Debt, Sunqian Ren Sep 2019

Externalities Of Cds Trading: The Effect On Industry Peer Firms’ Cost Of Debt, Sunqian Ren

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This paper documents externalities associated with the introduction of credit default swaps (CDS) in the corporate bond market. I find that firms without traded CDS contracts (non-CDS firms) experience lower cost of debt when there are more peer firms with traded CDS contracts (CDS firms). This effect is stronger when non-CDS firms are more closely related to a CDS-firm and when the outstanding CDS contracts are more liquid. My findings are consistent with the view that CDS trading provides hedging opportunities and information for bond investors of non-CDS firms. This study provides evidence that CDS trading on peer firms has …

The Impact Of Local Broadband Coverage On U.S. Firms’ Information Environment, Zhiyuan Tu Sep 2019

The Impact Of Local Broadband Coverage On U.S. Firms’ Information Environment, Zhiyuan Tu

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study investigates the impact of local broadband coverage on the information environment of firms located in the United States. I hypothesize that more intensive local broadband coverage improves the overall quality of a firm’s information environment by allowing more locally generated firm-specific news to be more broadly disseminated via the Internet. I use the Federal Communication Commission (FCC)’s form 477 data to measure the intensity of local broadband coverage. I find that more intensive local broadband coverage near a firm is associated with a firm having smaller earnings surprises, and lower abnormal information asymmetry around quarterly earnings announcements. These …

New Factor Structure Models And Idiosyncratic Volatility, Ossama Elhadary Sep 2019

New Factor Structure Models And Idiosyncratic Volatility, Ossama Elhadary

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In this dissertation, I propose new factor structures that are based on the Fama-French style factors but include additional locations like the industry groups and the exchanges where the stocks are traded. I show that the stock returns are clustered around the industry groups and the exchanges. Idiosyncratic volatility calculated using the new factor structure models tend to be smaller than those calculated using the traditional Fama-French model. By sorting portfolios using the idiosyncratic volatility computed using the new factor models, a trader can gain larger profits compared to sorting the portfolio using the traditionally calculated idiosyncratic volatility.

Place-Making By Black And Latinx Students In Predominantly White Institutions: Participatory Design And Meaning Making Through A Social Enterprise, Joshua P.H. Livingston

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Black and Latinx male retention in post-secondary institutions, particularly predominantly white institutions (PWI), remains a critical social problem. Even though many PWIs set up structures to welcome and support Black and Latinx males, those structures are defined and created through dominant cultural norms. They have been challenged to mitigate the individualized facets of disengagement. A social innovation, proof of concept model was conceptualized, designed, and developed alongside Black and Latinx males in college. Social innovation is defined as a new way of approaching long standing and complex problems. Proof of concept (PoC) helps to validate that processes and designs are …

Analysis Of Credit Enhancement Of Financing Guarantee Company, Tiewei Zhang Sep 2019

Analysis Of Credit Enhancement Of Financing Guarantee Company, Tiewei Zhang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

In China, the financing problem of SMEs has been concerned for a long time, but it has not been effectively solved. At present, the development of financing guarantee companies (FGCs) providing credit enhancement services for SMEs is facing severe challenges. Essentially, financing guarantee is a special kind of creditor’s right (debt investor’s rights). The essence of creditor's right is the seller position of put options. Because the return-risk structure of creditor's right is seriously asymmetric, debt investors should follow the prudent and conservative operating principle. The "5Ws" principle or "5Cs" principle of bank loan business is the embodiment of this …

Political Connections And The Value Of Cash Holdings, Yuanto Kusnadi Sep 2019

Political Connections And The Value Of Cash Holdings, Yuanto Kusnadi

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This study examines how political connections influence the value of cash holdings in an international setting. The main finding reveals that political connections are not associated with the value of cash holdings in the overall sample. However, further analysis demonstrates that political connections are negatively associated with the value of cash holdings for firms inemerging markets and in countries with high levels of corruption. Moreover, the negative valuation of cash holdings is driven by firms that are connected through large shareholders. Overall, the findings provide new insights into the value relevance of cash holdings, especially for politically connected firms.

Do Firms Manage Their Csr Reputation? Evidence From Twitter, Richard M. Crowley, Wenli Huang, Hai Lu, Wei Luo Sep 2019

Do Firms Manage Their Csr Reputation? Evidence From Twitter, Richard M. Crowley, Wenli Huang, Hai Lu, Wei Luo

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

Using a machine learning approach to process 11 million tweets posted by S&P 1500 firms from 2011 through 2016, we find that poor CSR performance firms tweet more about CSR activities and use tweets that are shorter, and with more passive voice and extreme tone. Good CSR performance firms tweet less about CSR, yet gain twice more followers per CSR tweet than poor CSR performance firms. Good CSR performance firms also experience a greater decrease in institutional ownership along with higher increases in bid-ask spread and stock return volatility after joining Twitter than do poor CSR performance firms. Our findings …

Snowball Effect Of User Participation In Online Environmental Communities: Elaboration Likelihood Under Social Influence, Yali Zhang, Haixin Zhang, Zhaojun Yang, Jun Sun, Chrissie Diane Tan Sep 2019

Snowball Effect Of User Participation In Online Environmental Communities: Elaboration Likelihood Under Social Influence, Yali Zhang, Haixin Zhang, Zhaojun Yang, Jun Sun, Chrissie Diane Tan

Information Systems Faculty Publications

Ecological preservation and sustainable development depend on active public involvement. The emergence of online environmental communities greatly facilitates people’s participation in green endeavors. The population penetration of such platforms accelerates as existing users persuade people around them and media coverage further attracts public attention. This snowball effect plays an important role in the user base expansion, but the specific mechanism of social influence involved is yet to be examined. Based on the social influence theory, cognitive response theory, and elaboration likelihood model, this study establishes a research model depicting the relationship between persuasion in terms of social influence and outcomes …
