This study conceptually and empirically examines the establishment of certain financial regulation that resulted from the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) of 2007-2009. The crisis led to the establishment of the most extensive change in the regulation of the financial sector since the Great Depression (Green, 2011). This dissertation is comprised of three studies investigating the effects of informal management control systems (MCS) and different types of incentive compensation schemes on employees' performance. Prior research describes informal MCS as implicit sets of structures that management adopts to encourage employees to act in a way that aligns with overall organizational goals (Berry et al. 2009). This is dissertation consists of three studies investigating accountability in auditing. It is aimed at gaining a better understanding of how auditors make decision in the presence of accountability pressure. The first study is a literature review of the experimental audit research on accountability. It provides a conceptual framework for organizing prior research on this topic and offers opportunities for future research. The second study experimentally investigates accountability as a potential mitigating mechanism for the performance declines caused by ego depletion. My first essay examines compensation of newly formed boards of directors following tax-free corporate spin-offs. The empirical results show newly formed spin-off boards are paid significantly more than peer boards in the same industry with similar firm size. Higher compensation is observed for spin-off firms where the CEOs are not formerly employed by the parent firms but not for spin-off firms with parent related CEOs, indicating that new directors demand higher compensation for the work involved in setting up the new governing system for the spun-off firms especially when there is a brand new CEO managing the spinoff firm. In my first essay, I use additions to the S&P 500 index as a laboratory to investigate how the interaction between arbitrageurs and arbitrage risk affects security prices. I find that the price effect is strong when there is high arbitrage risk (as measured by the lack of close substitutes) and low presence of arbitrageurs (as measured by low ownership by active institutions). Furthermore, a strong presence of arbitrageurs moderates the effect of arbitrage risk on the post-addition price reaction of added stocks. I also find a significant decrease in arbitrageurs' ownership in the added stocks post addition. More importantly, …

Effective leadership in healthcare improves the patient experience. Self-awareness drives leadership development, competence, and, in turn, leader effectiveness. The problem addressed by this study was the absence of knowledge regarding how healthcare leaders develop awareness of their leadership strengths and weaknesses: their competence. The 2007-2009 recession negatively impacted the global economy, especially the real estate industry and multifamily rental properties. Obtaining credit became difficult, real estate lost 41% equity, 223 commercial banks failed, and 3.2 million homes were in foreclosure. Grounded in systems theory, the purpose of this causal comparative study was to examine the impact of mortgage lender type on the average ranking of 8 mortgage underwriting outcome measures. For the study, 44 accredited mortgage professionals completed an online-survey. The results of the analyses of variance indicated a statistically significant (p < 0.001) lender type effect on credit score and loan-to-value ratio. Further analyses on credit score indicated a significant (p = 0.006) relationship between Category A and B lenders, Category A and C lenders (p < 0.001), and Category B and C lenders (p < 0.001). Further analyses on loan-to-value ratio indicated a significant (p = 0.017) relationship between Category A and B lenders and also Category A and C lenders with (p < 0.001), but the difference between Category B and C lenders is not statistically significant with (p = 0.063). The implications for positive social change include economic growth and expansion, as access to financing increases. Tenants in multifamily rental properties might also benefit from economic growth as the standard of living could increase when landlords initiate capital spending and development.
