An Evaluation Of Tax Structure And Practices Of On Board Sales In Brazil, Gregory Altom, Fabio Campos, Haroldo De Lima, Rita Medina, Andrezza Moraes

This study compared the tax costs between on-board sales and airport cafeterias of a mix of twenty-five products composed of beverages, fresh food and snacks in the amount that would be boarded on domestic flights between São Paulo, SP, Rio de Janeiro, RJ and Brasília, DF. The study showed that airlines are paying three times more in taxes than the airport cafeterias. The study suggested that states stop charging taxes for the transfer of unsold products on board, reducing 67% of the fees paid by airlines that practice buy on board (BoB) and guarantee a revenue gain between USD $ …

To Retrench Or Invest? Turnaround Strategies During A Recessionary Time, Manveer Mann, Sang Eun Byun

By analyzing retail news published between 2008 and 2011, we examined retrenchment and investment strategies employed by retailers in the U.S. in response to the Great Recession. We found four categories of retrenchment (store closings, buyouts, bankruptcies, and pull backs) and five categories of investment (market expansion, product development, service development, strategic partnerships, and corporate social responsibility). Retrenchment decisions were constrained by retailers' financial strength, whereas investment decisions varied with firms' strategic orientations and resource capabilities. Findings of this study enhance theoretical understanding of underlying factors of specific retrenchment and investment decisions that retailers pursued during a challenging economic time.

The primary purpose of this study was to determine the traits and behaviors of an ethical leader as perceived by tenured and tenure-track faculty at a research university (RU/VH) in the southeastern portion of the United States. The researcher utilized a researcher-designed survey instrument which consisted of 44 possible traits and behaviors of an ethical leader and selected demographic characteristics.

Examination of the study results revealed that the majority of respondents were male (66.20%) and tenured (75.00%). Additionally, the largest group were Professors (49.60%), and had been at the study institution for less than l0 years (38.20%). Most of the …

Firms use costing methods to determine the price of a product and to analyze the efficiency of resource consumption. Over the years, one of the main concerns confronting hospital management is optimising the staffing and scheduling decisions. Consequences of inappropriate staffing can adversely impact on hospital performance, patient experience and staff satisfaction alike. A comprehensive review of literature (more than 1300 journal articles) is presented in a new taxonomy of three dimensions; problem contextualisation, solution approach, evaluation perspective and uncertainty. Utilising Operations Research methods, solutions can provide a positive contribution in underpinning staffing and scheduling decisions.
