Farm Deaths And Injuries: Changing Farmer Attitudes And Behaviour On Farm Safety, Kieran O'Connell
Theses
While the Irish agricultural sector accounts for just 6% of the working population of Ireland, it consistently has the highest proportion of fatal incidents of any sector - generally ranging from between 35% and 45% of all workplace fatalities in any given year (Health and Safety Authority, 2015). This was again evident in 2014 where 55% (30 of the 56) of the fatal workplace incidents were in the agricultural sector (Health and Safety Authority, 2015). Agriculture has an ageing workforce with the average age of an Irish farmer now standing at fifty-seven and farmers are eight times more likely to …
Destination Cork : A New Frontier For The Culinary Curious Tourist, Catherine Fitzgibbon
Destination Cork : A New Frontier For The Culinary Curious Tourist, Catherine Fitzgibbon
Theses
Food is an important aspect in creating tourism destinations and can be perceived as an immensely influential attraction for tourism. There are excellent examples of destinations that brand themselves through food tourism, using this special-interest area as a strategy to develop regional tourism and ultimately, increase tourist numbers. However, not all destinations use food tourism as a strategic branding strategy. One such example is Cork in Ireland. While having an excellent food offering, food is not a primary tourism activity in the region’s destination branding strategy.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the feasibility of branding Cork as …

Integrating A Code Of Professional Conduct And Ethics: An Action Research Approach, Ciara Kissane
Theses
A new version of the Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics for Registered Nurses and Registered Midwives (NMBI, 2014a) was published in 2014. A nurse’s fitness to practice, and the associated patient experience, is determined by the extent to which the nurse accords with the duties outlined in the Code. Professional misconduct among members of the nursing profession has been highlighted within recent reports and enquiries. The failure to act on unethical care is also a feature. The literature suggests that Codes are poorly understood and can be problematic to integrate in practice. This study sought to; explore the impact …

The Impact Of Rivalry Antecedents On Mediated Demand For An Individual Sport, Lamar Reams, Terry Eddy
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications
In contrast to research examining the social-psychological aspects of how sport fans perceive rivalry games in team sports, far less is known regarding the impact rivalries have on mediated consumer demand, a marketing outcome of interest to sport researchers and practitioners. Guided by economic demand theory, the current study developed a model to empirically examine the impact of Tyler and Cobbs' (2015) rivalry antecedents (conflict, peer, bias) on fan interest for an individual sport. The three-dimensional framework provided the foundation for the selection of thirteen rivalry-related variables, in addition to control determinants established from prior literature. Results from the estimation …

The rapid growth of AI systems has implications on a wide variety of fields. It can prove to be a boon to disparate fields such as healthcare, education, global logistics and transportation, to name a few. However, these systems will also bring forth far-reaching changes in employment, economy and security. As AI systems gain acceptance and become more commonplace, certain critical questions arise: What are the legal and security ramifications of the use of these new technologies? Who can use them, and under what circumstances? What is the safety of these systems? Should their commercialization be regulated? What are the …

The Chief Hr Officer’S Role In Ceo Succession: The View From The Board, Patrick M. Wright, Donald J. Schepker, Anthony J. Nyberg, Michael D. Ulrich
Reports
Interviews with 22 members of public and private company boards revealed their beliefs about and expectations for CHROs in the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) succession process. Board members distinguished between credible CHROs who can add significant value to the process and those CHROs who they do not want to see included in almost any aspect of the process. When credible, board members want CHROs to have confidential conversations with the current CEO, to create processes and development plans for potential successors, and to provide their own independent insights regarding candidate strengths and weaknesses. Directors noted that CHROs who add value …

Reports
This report documents the results of the 2017 HR@Moore Survey of Chief HR Officers with regard to the present state of race and sex diversity in CEO succession pools. Based on responses of 127 Chief Human Resource Officers (CHROs) at large companies we find that the diversity of CEO succession pools remains far below what many would hope, both in the short- and long-term. In the 0-3 year timeframe, females and racial minorities represent only 10% and 7% of the succession pools, respectively, while in the 3-5 year timeframe these numbers only rise to 15% and 12% respectively. When compared …

Publication Bias In Strategic Management Research, Jeffrey S. Harrison, George Christopher Banks, Jeffrey M. Pollack, Ernest H. O'Boyle, Jeremy Short
Management Faculty Publications
This research explores the domain of strategic management for evidence of publication bias—the systematic suppression of research findings due to the magnitude, statistical significance, or generally accepted direction of effect sizes. We review why publication bias may exist in strategy research as well as report empirical findings regarding the influence of publication bias in the field. Overall, we found evidence consistent with the inference that publication bias affects many, but not all, topics in the strategic management research. Correlation inflation due to publication bias ranged from an average change in magnitude from .00 (no bias) to .19. These results serve …

Stock Returns And Industrial Production: A Sectoral Analysis, Griffin Lazarus
Stock Returns And Industrial Production: A Sectoral Analysis, Griffin Lazarus
CMC Senior Theses
This paper analyzes the relationship between stock returns and future industrial production growth rates from 1926-1940. It replicates the work of Fama (1990) and Schwert (1990) with the intent to see if the relationship continues to hold using sector data. Furthermore, this paper focuses on the 1926-1940 sample period to explore how the relationship is affected by the stock market crash of 1929. It is expected that the relation will be weak for the industry sectors experiencing strong growth prior to the crash. The results indicate that the relationship between stock returns and future industrial production growth rates persists on …

Department of Marketing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Purpose of Study: The purpose of this study was to assess student preference for procedural (formula-driven) versus conceptual (concept-driven) approaches to solve mathematical problems. Additionally, we evaluated differences in preferences among students who performed above average and those who performed at or below average on simple arithmetic problems. Methods/Design and Sample: We used a single-factor (Instructional Approach: conceptual vs. procedural) between-subjects experiment. Instructional approach was manipulated using short embedded instructional videos. Students evaluated each approach on a five-point scale. Results: We found that students (above-average and average/below-average) preferred the procedural approach to the conceptual approach. Interestingly, however, although students preferred …

Message-Framing Effects On Indian Females' Mammography-Screening Intentions: Examining Moderating And Mediating Relationships, Christopher Mckinley, Yam Limbu, C Jayachandran
Department of Marketing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This study explored how distinct intervening factors explain the impact of messageframing appeals on Indian females' mammography-screening intentions. Contrary to prior investigations of early detection behavior, gain-framed messages were more effective at promoting mammography-screening intentions than loss-framed messages. Furthermore, results indicated that varying levels of need for cognition did not impact when gain- or loss-framed appeals were more effective, but rather how framing influenced message responses as well as message judgments. In particular, at high levels of need for cognition, gain-framed messages generated greater message attention and perceived message value than loss-framed appeals. Importantly, the findings from mediation tests revealed …

Is Major League Baseball Striking Out? In-Game Advertising And Its Effects On America's Pastime, Ashley M. Anderson
Honors Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to determine the effectiveness of in-game advertisements at Major League Baseball games. Average attendance at Major League Baseball games has been steadily declining for years. Simultaneously, the average length of a professional baseball game has increased significantly. Secondary research has shown that just a few minutes of advertising per game could add up to hours of extra playing time per season. There is ample research available on the evolution and frequency of in-game advertisement, but little has been done to study the actual effectiveness of in-game advertising. Therefore, I conducted primary research in the …
