Subprime Mortgage Lending As It Relates To The 2007-2009 Financial Crisis, Josiah Bardy

The Kabod

The 2007-2009 financial crisis was the worst recession in recent economic history. The financial crisis has been the subject of much academic scrutiny, and many authors have arrived at different conclusions concerning the cause of the crisis and the effects. One of the most interesting real estate investments occurred during the crisis: certain investors and organizations predicted the bursting of the housing bubble and shorted real-estate backed securities, yielding huge profit. This paper will explore the financial crisis as well as the concurrent short selling to gain better understanding of financial markets, economic bubbles and recessions, and real-estate backed securities.

Modeling Adoption Dynamics In Social Networks, Minh Duc Luu Feb 2017

Modeling Adoption Dynamics In Social Networks, Minh Duc Luu

Dissertations and Theses Collection

This dissertation studies the modeling of user-item adoption dynamics where an item can be an innovation, a piece of contagious information or a product. By “adoption dynamics” we refer to the process of users making decision choices to adopt items based on a variety of user and item factors. In the context of social networks, “adoption dynamics” is closely related to “item diffusion”. When a user in a social network adopts an item, she may influence her network neighbors to adopt the item. Those neighbors of her who adopt the item then continue to trigger more adoptions. As this progress …

Mere Measurement “Plus”: How Solicitation Of Open-Ended Positive Feedback Influences Customer Purchase Behavior, Sterling A. Bone, Katherine N. Lemon, Clay M. Voorhees, Katie A. Liljenquist, Paul W. Fombelle, Kristen B. Detienne, R. Bruce Money

Management Faculty Publications

In two studies (a longitudinal field experiment with an established B2C national chain, and a field experiment with a B2B software manufacturer), we demonstrate that starting a survey with an open-ended positive solicitation increases customer purchase behavior. Study 1, a longitudinal field experiment, showed that one-year following the completion of a survey that began by asking customers what went well during their purchase experience, customers spent 8.25% more than customers who completed a survey that did not include the positive solicitation. In Study 2, we utilized multiple treatment groups to assess the step-wise gains of solicitation, measurement, and solicitation frame. …

New Vehicle Feebates, Nicholas Rivers, Brandon Schaufele Feb 2017

New Vehicle Feebates, Nicholas Rivers, Brandon Schaufele

Business Publications

New vehicle feebate programs encourage improved fleet‐wide vehicle fuel efficiency; yet analyses of these policies have been limited to ad hoc proposals. In this paper, we exploit an extensive, multi‐year dataset which includes more than 16 million observations to evaluate the welfare implications of a long‐standing vehicle feebate program in the Canadian province of Ontario. We: (1) show that second‐best optimal feebates can be written as a function of new vehicle Pigouvian taxes; (2) find that Ontario's feebate program was welfare‐enhancing relative to a no feebate scenario but that a second‐best optimal benchmark would have yielded additional welfare while reducing …

News Management Around Equity Private Placements, Hsiao-Chen Liang, Woan-Yuh Jang Feb 2017

News Management Around Equity Private Placements, Hsiao-Chen Liang, Woan-Yuh Jang

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Private placement is the sale of securities to a limited number of qualified institutions or high-wealth investors. Although private placement is favorable for firms raising capital, it is relatively easy for managers to exploit it to benefit specific investors. Using a sample of Taiwanese private placements covering 2006 to 2010, we use both quantitative and qualitative variables to examine the determinants of the valence and tenor of media coverage around private placement announcements and study whether managers strategically perform news management. The results show that issuers will engage in news management around private placement announcements to facilitate the issue process. …

Feasibility In Applying Agile Project Management Methodologies To Building Design And Construction Industry, Roy S. Moriel

Dissertations and Theses

During the past few decades, fundamental changes have taken place in project development, planning, and execution. This has taken form with embracing new techniques such as various agile project management methodologies to develop products, instead of using the traditional waterfall project management methodology commonly used today. Using agile has been very successful as a large portion of the IT world has integrated it within their companies. Unfortunately, professional fields such as the building design and construction industry have remained mostly with the traditional methods impacting the projects in terms of cost, scheduling, and other project elements that can benefit from …

When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going, Antti Fredriksson, Daniela Maresch, Matthias Fink, Andrea Moro

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

A bank’s lending decision is affected by the amount of information it can access and by its capability to manage this information. The latter aspect implies that the bank has to decide whether borrowers should be managed in a local branch of the bank or in its headquarters. By looking at a sample of Finnish banks, the present research investigates a bank’s capability to extract profitability from both locally and centrally managed firms. We find that banks are able to properly discriminate between firms: those which should be managed by loan managers with expert knowledge in the bank’s headquarters due …
