An Historical Analysis Of The Role Of Accounting For The Japanese Internment Camps During World War Ii, Midori Knowles
Honors Projects in Accounting
On December 7th, 1941, the United States was the victim of a tragic attack on a naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. This resulted in the United States’ entry into World War II, including the declaration of war against the country of Japan. On February 19th, 1942, just two months after the attacks, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which permitted the War Relocation Authority (WRA) to relocate over 110,000 Japanese- American citizens. The forced relocation sent these Japanese-Americans to ten relocation centers spread throughout the west and mid-west of the country. The government declared that this relocation …
The Impact Of Logistics Performance On The Success Of Trade Agreements, Kevin Arbeiter
The Impact Of Logistics Performance On The Success Of Trade Agreements, Kevin Arbeiter
Honors Projects in Management
The purpose of this capstone project is to determine whether or not it is possible to predict the success and effectiveness of new trade agreements by looking at fundamental factors associated with efficient supply chain management. Typically, free trade agreements are analyzed using economic factors such as Gross Domestic Product or labor gains and losses. When this is done to determine whether or not a trade agreement is successful, it is usually backwards looking and too late for a country to opt out without economic repercussions. The aim of this study is to determine whether it is possible to predict …

Five Seconds To The Ad: How Program-Induced Mood Affects Ad Countdown Effects, Tiffany Venmahavong
Five Seconds To The Ad: How Program-Induced Mood Affects Ad Countdown Effects, Tiffany Venmahavong
Honors Projects in Marketing
The study examines what effects a five second countdown warning will have on consumer’s attitudes towards the advertisement depending on the main program content. This study builds upon several theoretical models concerning program-induced moods in relation to viewer’s judgment to commercial advertisements. Findings from two studies suggest that program-induced mood systematically influences attitude toward the inserted ad with (vs. without) a five-second countdown: for the negative-affect program, attitude toward the ad was more positive when the ad was preceded by the countdown than when the ad was not preceded by the countdown. However, for the positive-affect program, attitude toward the …

The Perceptions Of Accounting: What Do You Think?, Brianna Darin
Honors Projects in Accounting
Accounting is often considered “the language of business,” but is sometimes perceived to be a difficult topic. This study seeks to get a deeper understanding as to why business students and other students perceive accounting to be such an intimidating subject. The ultimate research question addressed is: What are the perceptions of accounting among accounting students, non-accounting business students, and non-business students? A review of the relevant background literature led to two hypotheses that assist in answering the research question. Following the literature review and hypotheses development, a two-part process took place: (1) we conducted focus groups and (2) we …
The Art Of Leader Judgement In Organizations: A Qualitative Investigation Of Its Development, Michayla Fuller, Rachel Sturm
The Art Of Leader Judgement In Organizations: A Qualitative Investigation Of Its Development, Michayla Fuller, Rachel Sturm
The University Honors Program
It is estimated that each person faces approximately 35,000 decisions a day (Sollisch, 2016). Whereas decision-making can be scientifically reduced down to a set of steps that includes things such as identifying the problem (e.g., I am hungry). weighing decision criteria (e.g., do I want something healthy or tasty?), and generating alternative courses of action (e.g., will I get a bagel or have some cereal?), how one responds to the decision-making process overall, including identifying an appropriate course of action to [eventually] take, lies at the heart of judgement. Specifically, judgement requires that individuals, such as a leaders, make decisions …

The Impact Of Airline Concentration On Smaller Communities And Airports, Zheng Yao Ooi
The Impact Of Airline Concentration On Smaller Communities And Airports, Zheng Yao Ooi
Paper and Posters Presentations
This study examines the price-concentration relationship in the U.S. airline industry. Based on Singh and Zhus (2008) study, an economic model is applied to the Kansas airline market. The study empirically measures the airfare or price effect of the key determinant, carrier concentration, after controlling for other variables such as trip distance from Kansas to destination airports, the presence of an airport hub, nearby airports, and local area characteristics including per capita income and population. The main hypothesis is that the fewer the airline companies serving an airport (i.e., the higher the market concentration), the higher the average airfare, all …

Fostering Parasocial Relationships With Celebrities On Social Media: Implications For Celebrity Endorsement, Siyoung Chung, Hichang Cho
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School of Business
The purpose of this study was to explore the underlying mechanisms through which the use of social media affects endorser effectiveness. Based on theories related to parasocial relationships,self-disclosure, and celebrity endorsement, this study proposed a theoretical research model and empirically tested the model using online survey data collected from 400 Korean Wave fans in Singapore. The results showed that consumers’ parasocial interactions with celebrities though social media have a positive impact on celebrity endorsement. Specifically, we found that: (1) parasocial relationships mediated the relationships between social media interactions and source trustworthiness, (2) social media interactions influenced parasocial relationships via self-disclosure;and …

On Setting The Delivery Due Date With Production On A Machine Under Outsourced Maintenance, Sharafali Moosa, Hakan. Tarakci, Shailesh Kulkarni, Raja Abdul Razack Shahul Hameed
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School of Business
We consider an unreliable production system with a contractual relationship with a customer for a firm delivery date. We focus on the production-related decisions of the manufacturer. We assume that production rate is constant as long as the system is up and running but the randomness in production is due to downtimes as a result of breakdowns and scheduled preventive maintenance activities. The maintenance of the production facility is outsourced to a contractor. As production output is random, the manufacturer needs to make two important decisions, viz (i) how much time to allow for production taking into account the trade-off …

Negotiations Vs. Confrontation: A Possible Explanation Of The Empirical Results, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
A recent book promoting negotiations as an alternative to confrontations cites the empirical evidence that in business situations, confrontational attitude leads, on average, to a 75% loss in comparison with negotiations. An additional empirical fact is that only in 10% of the cases, negotiations are not possible and confrontation is inevitable.

Beyond Social Justice For The African American Learner: A Contextual Humanistic Perspective For School Counselors, Lacretia Dye, Lashonda B. Fuller, Monica G. Burke, Aaron W. Hughey
Counseling & Student Affairs Faculty Publications
African American students’ ability to persist in an educational system that has historically viewed them as uneducable is a testament to their persistence and resilience. The authors provide a brief historical overview of how African American students have been treated since they were first brought to what later became the United States. A social justice framework is discussed as a solid foundation for addressing current inadequacies, with emphasis on the need for school counselors to move beyond their traditional understanding of the so-called “achievement gap.” Using a contextual humanistic approach, the authors suggest micro and macro level action steps that …
Examining The Complementary Effect Of Political Networking Capability With Absorptive Capacity On The Innovative Performance Of Emerging-Market Firms, Masaaki Kotabe, Crystal Jiang, Janet Y. Murray
Examining The Complementary Effect Of Political Networking Capability With Absorptive Capacity On The Innovative Performance Of Emerging-Market Firms, Masaaki Kotabe, Crystal Jiang, Janet Y. Murray
Management Department Faculty Journal Articles
By incorporating institutional theory with the dynamic capability perspective, we investigate how emerging-market firms’ organizational capability to acquire resources through political networking with government officials complements their absorptive capacity in enhancing incremental and radical innovations. We further investigate the conditions under which the complementary effect matters. On the basis of a survey of 108 senior executives in China, we find that political networking capability complements absorptive capacity in overcoming resource constraints and organizational disadvantages in enhancing firms’ innovations, and the result is more effective in improving radical rather than incremental innovations. Furthermore, the complementary effect becomes stronger for emerging-market firms’ …

Puerto Rican Entrepreneurship In The U.S., Jennifer Hinojosa
CUNY Centro, The Center for Puerto Rican Studies
Puerto Rican entrepreneurs were the fastest growing business firms in the U.S. According to the most recent U.S. Census Bureau’s Survey of Business owners1, Puerto Rican business firms in the U.S. employed over 250,000 employees and generated $24.4 billion in sale revenues in 2012. Driven by population growth within the U.S. mainland and the recent Puerto Rican migration from Puerto Rico, Puerto Rican owned businesses exploded throughout the nation, especially in areas of new settlement. Data from the 2002, 2007, and 2012 U.S. Census Bureau’s Survey of Business Owners were used to analyze national and state level trends among Puerto …

Factored Similarity Models With Social Trust For Top-N Item Recommendation, Guibing Guo, Jie Zhang, Feida Zhu, Xingwei Wang
Research Collection School of Computing and Information Systems
Trust-aware recommender systems have attracted much attention recently due to the prevalence of social networks. However, most existing trust-based approaches are designed for the recommendation task of rating prediction. Only few trust-aware methods have attempted to recommend users an ordered list of interesting items, i.e., item recommendation. In this article, we propose three factored similarity models with the incorporation of social trust for item recommendation based on implicit user feedback. Specifically, we introduce a matrix factorization technique to recover user preferences between rated items and unrated ones in the light of both user-user and item-item similarities. In addition, we claim …

Do Disclosures Of Customer Metrics Lower Investors' And Analysts' Uncertainty But Hurt Firm Performance?, Emanuel Bayer, Kapil R. Tuli, Bernd Skiera
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School of Business
Investors, analysts, and regulators frequently advocate greater disclosure of nonfinancial information, such as customer metrics. Managers, however, argue that such metrics are costly to report, reveal sensitive information to competitors, and therefore will lower future cash flows. To examine these counterarguments, this study presents the first empirical examination of the prevalence and consequences of backward- and forward-looking disclosures of customer metrics by manually coding 511 annual reports of firms in two industries, telecommunications (365 reports) and airlines (146 reports). The results reveal significant heterogeneity in the disclosure of customer metrics across firms and between industries. On average, in both industries, …
Pay For Performance: What Type Of Pay Scheme Is Best For Achieving Business Results?, Fermin Augusto Diez
Pay For Performance: What Type Of Pay Scheme Is Best For Achieving Business Results?, Fermin Augusto Diez
Dissertations and Theses Collection
Much has been written, for and against, about compensation as a driver of performance. Two main theoretical constructs deal with this subject: extrinsic theory, including agency theory, whereby money is a main motivator to performance, and intrinsic theory which proposes that money does not motivate, and in fact may hinder, performance. However, corporations spend considerable effort in designing compensation packages with the objective of linking remuneration to performance. Practitioners have developed a variety of mechanisms to deliver pay packages, but heretofore there has been no attempt to validate which, if any, of these various approaches is better able to drive …
Economic Growth Under Weak And Strong Sustainability Scenarios, Sean Ippolito
Economic Growth Under Weak And Strong Sustainability Scenarios, Sean Ippolito
McNair Scholars Research Journal
Romer (1990) introduced endogenous growth by placing emphasis on human capital as a major driver of innovation. Barbier (1999) expanded this framework to include a single exhaustible resource, natural capital. These developments added to the discussion of economic growth, innovation, and the production process. This project extends Romer and Barbier’s endogenous growth framework to include natural resource utilization in the consumption function in order to open the discussion to weak and strong sustainability. This project compares the growth rates, steady state, and dynamics across these models so that we more effectively capture non-linearities and feedback loops. Finally, we explore the …

The Business Of Brandy: The Changing Roles Of Women In Apple Brandy Production In Lower Mustang, Nepal, Madeline Sachs
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Lower Mustang, Nepal is famous across the country for its well-known trekking circuit and an agricultural climate especially suitable to apple cultivation. Home to the indigenous Thakali ethnic group, the region was made accessible by motor vehicle via the Jomsom-Beni road just ten years ago. While before the road transportation of fresh apples was nearly impossible, necessitating the production of dried apples and apple brandy, now farmers make a lucrative profit off of high demand throughout the country. Additionally, the production of apple brandy has boomed, and the region has four to six distilleries in production at any one time. …

South Africa has become a shelter for immigrants from all over the world (Wilkinson, 2015). Combined with its internationally recognized economy, it is a tempting location for foreigners to establish a business (“Starting a Business in South Africa as a Foreigner – A Complete Guide”, n.d.). With this in mind, the intent of this study is twofold. First, this project aims at analyzing how foreigners establish businesses in Cape Town. Its objective is to trace the entrepreneurial process from the initial stages to its recent development. Second, it aims at outlining their experiences in Cape Town, thus serve as a …
Equity And Community-Based Health Insurance: How Does Insurance Coverage Affect Health Seeking Behavior Among Disadvantaged Groups In India?, Hazel Hering
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The objective of this study is to examine how Community-Based Health Insurance (CBHI) can promote equity by improving health seeking behavior across gender and geography. Using a CBHI scheme from the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) as a case study, trends in claims filed between October 2016 and March 2017 are compared to the distribution of memberships in order to investigate whether health insurance coverage positively impacts health seeking behavior among disadvantaged groups, and what barriers to access exist when the burden of medical costs are reduced. This study concludes that the number of male and female claims in the sample …

Factors That Influence Physicians To Assume Leadership Roles: A Focus On Clinical Integration, Jennifer Lynne Jackson
Factors That Influence Physicians To Assume Leadership Roles: A Focus On Clinical Integration, Jennifer Lynne Jackson
Dissertations
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (PPACA) drastically altered the healthcare industry in the United States. Along with multiple other directives, the PPACA mandated that physicians and hospitals work together in strategies known as clinical integration. For effective clinical integration to be achieved, interdependence among physicians and hospitals is required to provide the highest quality outcomes for patients at the best possible value. To this end, healthcare leaders have identified that the key to establishing successful clinical integration is the presence and commitment of physician leaders (Penlington & Marshall, 2016).
This study explores factors that influenced a …

Comparing Critical Chain Project Managemenet With Critical Path Method: A Case Study, Behzad Montazeri
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Scheduling is a major task in project management. The current scheduling technique, Critical Path Method (CPM), has been widely applied for several decades, but a large number of projects fail to be completed on time and schedule delays occur in many projects. This raises question about the validity of the current project scheduling system. Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM), derived from Theory of Constraints, is a relatively new alternative approach toward scheduling projects. This study compared CCPM and CPM to determine which scheduling method delivers a shorter project duration and has a better usage of resources. A scheduling software called …
