Greater Faculties: A Review of Teaching and Learning

To unpack some of our assumptions about attention, learning, and technology in the classroom, CELT's Trey Conatser spoke with Dr. Yuha Jung and Dr. Rachel Shane of the Department of Arts Administration. Jung and Shane have worked with colleagues to integrate technologies into their teaching so that students are more likely to be on task. What follows is an informal exploration of what it means to pay attention and to learn in the context of the contested value of digital technologies.

Emerging Dynamics Of Management: Book Launch Ceremony Remarks, Ishrat Hussain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

Several years ago, there was book called, What they Don't Teach you at Harvard Business School. The tile of Mr. Sirajuddin's book could simply be: What they don't teach you in Business School and Management Schools. Period. There are some lessons that you learn from a very personal and professional experience, which is accumulated overtime. It is reflected, digested, accumulated and then it is shared. The beauty of this book is that you will find these anecdotes to be a subset of the generalized obser vations about of management. I will not go into strateaies, structures, processes of human resource …

Sustainable tourism management plans rely on relevant and consistent information about factors that can influence the decision to visit a protected area. This paper uses the choice experiment method to investigate tourists’ preferences with regard to recreational trip characteristics in national and natural parks in Romania. An on-site survey questionnaire was administered to visitors. The multinomial logit model was employed to investigate the preference orderings of the identified groups of recreational users. Overall, results indicate that tourists gain benefits after visiting the parks. Main preference differences were found for information sources and location of campsites. This brief provides a three-year update to determine what, if any, progress has been made in women’s leadership within Utah’s public (K–12) and higher education (public and the two largest private) sectors. The brief compares Utah data with national data and reviews the applicable literature.

Strategic Management In Irish Construction Professional Service Firms: A Comparative Study Across Professions, Oluwasegun Seriki, Roisin Murphy Sep 2017

Strategic Management In Irish Construction Professional Service Firms: A Comparative Study Across Professions, Oluwasegun Seriki, Roisin Murphy

Conference papers

The Irish construction industry has undergone substantial change in the past decade. Following a deep, lengthy recession the improving outlook of the construction sector makes the inquiry into strategy within the firms both timely and appropriate. Determining how construction organizations successfully adapt in a highly turbulent industry is critical to ensure survival in a highly cyclical industry sector. Strategizing in construction professional service firms (CPSFs) is not well documented, and there is little understanding of the strategy processes, and implications of these processes in the firms. As part of an ongoing study, the strategic management process in CPSFs is reviewed …

Graves, Gifts, And The Bereaved Consumer: A Restorative Perspective Of Gift Exchange, Jenna M. Drenten, Kristy Mcmanus, Lauren I. Labrecque

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

When a gifting relationship is disrupted by death, why might a living consumer continue to invest in it? Consumer spending on deceased loved ones does not end with the funeral. Given the embodying power of a physical gravesite, this article examines the practice of gift giving to the deceased in the context of American cemeteries. We employ a longitudinal approach, in which 180 cemetery gravesites were photographed. The photographic data are coupled with a netnography of grief and bereavement communities. Findings support a restorative perspective of gift exchange. Bereaved consumers utilize restorative giving as a mechanism to cope with loss …

Manu Militari: The Institutional Contingencies Of Stakeholder Relationships On Entrepreneurial Performance, Shon R. Hiatt, W. Chad Carlos, Wesley D. Sine

Faculty Publications

This study examines how ventures can leverage relationships with heterogeneous government stakeholders to enhance survival in different institutional environments. We consider how the distinct resources provided from venture ties to military and political actors represent complementary strategic assets that differentially influence performance in varying political and economic environments as well as under conditions of violence and political conflict. Empirically, we examine the effect of these respective stakeholder relationships on new venture survival across 10 countries over a 65-year period. By distinguishing between the resources obtained through relationships with different types of government stakeholders and showing how the value of these …

Conclusion

Rural Nebraskans most trust information received from local news sources (TV and newspapers) and public sources (PBS and public radio). They least trust information from social networking sites and Internet blogs. Most rural Nebraskans are somewhat or very confident in their ability to recognize news that is made up.

Most rural Nebraskans have confidence in their local institutions (public safety agencies in their community; public schools in their community; and voting and election systems in their county). On the other hand, over one-quarter of rural Nebraskans have very little confidence in the following national institutions: U.S. House of Representatives, …

An Examination Of The Statistical Significance And Economic Relevance Of Profitability And Earnings Forecasts From Models And Analysts, Mark E. Evans, Kenneth Njoroge, Keng Kevin Ow Yong

Research Collection School of Accountancy

In this paper, we propose and empirically test a cross-sectional profitability forecasting model which incorporates two major improvements relative to extant models. First, in terms of model construction, we incorporate mean reversion through the use of a two-stage partial adjustment model and inclusion of a number of additional relevant determinants of profitability. Second, in terms of model estimation, we employ least absolute deviation (LAD) analysis instead of ordinary least squares (OLS) because the former approach is able to better accommodate outliers. Results reveal that forecasts from our model are more accurate than three extant models at every forecast horizon considered …

Virtual Reality As A Promotional Tool: Insights From A Consumer Travel Fair, Mary O'Rawe, Alex Gibson Sep 2017

Virtual Reality As A Promotional Tool: Insights From A Consumer Travel Fair, Mary O'Rawe, Alex Gibson

Books / Book chapters

Although the potential of virtual reality (VR) as a technology in tourism has been recognised for more than twenty years, (Horan, 1996; Williams and Hobson, 1995), we have witnessed a renewed interest in both academic and business circles recently (Jung, tom Dieck, Lee, & Chung, 2016). From a marketing perspective, VR offers the potential to build a sensory experience of a tourism destination or attraction, and can be used in sales contexts to complement, or indeed, supplant traditional promotional tools such as brochures. The immersive nature of the experience offers a deeper and more emotional assessment of the tourist offering …
