Pay Them Now, Richard C. Crepeau
Pay Them Now, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Apparently it took the actions of a wealthy spoiled rich white kid to get the attention of the mainstream of American media on the issue of paying college athletes. The case of Johnny “Football” stirred the nation when the NCAA in its continuing quest to embarrass itself suspended the Texas A & M quarterback for signing memorabilia. Johnny signed not to make money, but so that those entrepreneurs who make a living from collecting signatures of athletes on sporting paraphernalia could cash their tickets.

No Condom, No Sex: Why Thailand’S 100% Condom Campaign Has Been An Unparalleled Success, Chase Mcmillan, Dr. Kerry Patterson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Thailand was the first country in Asia to publicly admit a serious HIV/AIDS problem. Within this acceptance came the commitment to curb the outbreak. The first cases of HIV/AIDS in Thailand were recorded in 1984, but by the late 1980’s, HIV/AIDS spread across the country like a wildfire, noticeably among certain “sentinel” groups, such as sex workers. Between 1989 and 1990, the percentage of infected sex workers tripled from 3.1 percent to 9.3 percent; a year later it had reached 15 percent. To end the spreading of infection, the Thai government realized they must begin with the commercial sex industry.
Developing Relational Trust In Advanced Supplier Relationships, Kelvin Junhan Goh, Dr. Nile W. Hatch
Developing Relational Trust In Advanced Supplier Relationships, Kelvin Junhan Goh, Dr. Nile W. Hatch
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The business world which we live in today is constantly pursuing new avenues of growth. Corporations try to gain a competitive edge or advantage over other industrial rivals, with cost-cutting a huge emphasis in the recent years. Although the idea might go against the grain, there is a place in today’s business arena for trust between buyers and suppliers. Scholars have discussed and written about this form of trust, which is meant to replace contracts and other forms of transactional agreements. Journal articles have been written on advanced supplier relationships that are built solely on trust, but none of them …
The Differences In Skills Between Entrepreneurs And Managers Within A Latter-Day Saint Community, Gianna Rosenbaum Ericksen
The Differences In Skills Between Entrepreneurs And Managers Within A Latter-Day Saint Community, Gianna Rosenbaum Ericksen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Many believe that entrepreneurs are born and not taught. There is speculation that success is personality-based rather than skill-based. The stream of research in this area, though, has indicated that skill plays a crucial role in the success of entrepreneurs. Successful ventures also depend on the right combination of entrepreneurial skill and a favorable environment.

An Exploratory Study Of Entrepreneurship Mentoring In South America, W. Devin Wagstaff, Dr. Kristie Seawright
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In an effort to overcome the challenges that many entrepreneurs face in bridging the chasm between theory and reality, Don Clarke has piloted an entrepreneurship mentoring program that seeks to help business owners apply the interventions discussed in the classroom to their individual businesses. In 2004, Clarke pioneered his entrepreneurship mentoring program, which combines traditional classroom instruction taught by student interns with a unique mentoring program that helps businesses apply the principles discussed in the class.

Towards Successful Implementation Of 5ss In A U.S. Manufacturing Company With Indian Sub-Continent Workers, Syed Shahzad Naqvi
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
XYZ is a manufacturing organization located in Michigan, in the Eastern North Central U.S., and it has a diverse workforce consisting of immigrants from Asia, Europe, and South America. The majority of the workers are immigrants from the Indian Sub-Continent. XYZ has been in the process of implementing 5Ss; however, it has been unable to sustain 5S standards. This study was conducted to identify the role of the Indian Sub-Continent workers’ culture and religion on 5S implementation and to suggest how this company can work with this group in successfully implementing the 5Ss.

Pro Forma Earnings: Distinguishing The Good From The Bad, Samuel Mautz, Dr. Ted Christensen
Pro Forma Earnings: Distinguishing The Good From The Bad, Samuel Mautz, Dr. Ted Christensen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The financial press has reported considerable disagreement during the past several years about the proliferation of non-standard profitability measures, generally known as ‘pro forma’ earnings. Pro forma earnings are normally defined as standard earnings adjusted for items that managers deem to be ‘one-time’ in nature or non-representative of future earnings (Weil, 2001) and are reported in the same earnings press release with the audited income number calculated according to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
Comparison Of Earnings Adjustments Made By Management And Financial Analysts, Dirk Black, Dr. Ted Christensen
Comparison Of Earnings Adjustments Made By Management And Financial Analysts, Dirk Black, Dr. Ted Christensen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Pro forma reporting has received significant attention from managers, regulators, and researchers in recent years. Pro forma reporting occurs when managers adjust earnings for certain “one-time” items allegedly to present earnings that are more representative of the “core” operations of their firms. In addition, analysts make adjustments to reported earnings to arrive at earnings per share estimates. Prior research has examined various aspects of pro forma reporting. Bhattacharya, et al., 2006 and Frederickson and Miller, 2004 find that investment decisions of ordinary, retail investors are affected by pro forma earnings while those of professional investors are not. Different proxies exist …
Impact Of Corruption In A Developing Economy The Example Of Armenia, Sevak Tsaturyan, Dr. Phillip Bryson
Impact Of Corruption In A Developing Economy The Example Of Armenia, Sevak Tsaturyan, Dr. Phillip Bryson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In our research we have attempted to address the negative impacts of corruption on economic development, trade and foreign direct investment in developing economies. Historically, it has been argued that political corruption is a very significant hindrance of economic development, especially in transitional economies. Economists from major organizations and institutions have performed numerous empirical analyses finding the negative correlation between corruption and economic performance measured in GDP. They have found this correlation to be especially significant when foreign direct investment is a factor of development. Assumptions have been formed that investors avoid corrupt economies due to business insecurities and the …
Role Of Programmed Proteolysis During Meiosis, Vincent Matthews, G. Valentin Borner Ph.D.
Role Of Programmed Proteolysis During Meiosis, Vincent Matthews, G. Valentin Borner Ph.D.
Undergraduate Research Posters 2013
Meiosis is the process which forms gametes and spores for reproduction in eukaryotic cells. During the pachytene phase of meiosis I, a protein structure, called the Synaptonemal Complex (SC), forms between homologous chromosomes and creates a scaffold for genetic recombination. In yeast, the Zip1 protein is a major structural component of the SC. At restrictive temperature for meiosis, ZIP1 is required for completion of meiotic divisions. At permissive temperature ZIP1 is required for proper chromosome segregation. We observed that chemical inhibition of the proteasome, with MG132, results in arrest at prophase of meiosis I. Based on these results, we questioned …
The Dow Shuffle, Steven D. Dolvin
The Dow Shuffle, Steven D. Dolvin
All Chapters
While it is viewed as a major stock market barometer, the Dow Jones Industrial Average only follows 30 companies, and every so often the set of companies changes. The recent shuffle eliminated Alcoa, Bank of America, and HP, while adding Goldman Sachs, Visa, and Nike. The primary reason was the low prices of the eliminated companies. While most indexes are value weighted, the Dow is price weighted, meaning lower priced stocks exert little influence. This is also the reason why Apple will likely not be added -- with its "high" stock price. See a good summary here, Wall Street Journal …

The Great Regression’S Impact On Construction Training Programs: Multi-Level Analyses Of Recruiting & Retention Concepts, John S. Gaal Edd
The Great Regression’S Impact On Construction Training Programs: Multi-Level Analyses Of Recruiting & Retention Concepts, John S. Gaal Edd
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
The intent of this practitioner-based research study is to determine if there is a difference in the attitudes of construction industry professionals—at local and international levels—towards various training-related recruiting and retention concepts. In light of the global economic malaise, training programs are being held to higher standards and, thusly, different metrics than in the past. In today’s environment, outcomes-based designs (versus outputs-based) have gained attention from both private and public funders of such training programs. Thusly, programs must adapt to the needs of the industry rather than rely on outdated materials and methods. To this end, a survey was designed …
Preferred Stock, Steven D. Dolvin
Preferred Stock, Steven D. Dolvin
All Chapters
Preferred stock, also called perpetual stock, is considered a type of hybrid security. It has characteristics of debt, the primary of which is a fixed dividend. However, it also has similarities to equity, in that it is equity, so the dividend is not guaranteed. So, it has higher risk than comparable bonds, but less risk (and less upside) than common stock. Moreover, the price of preferred stock is primarily responsive to changes in interest rates (i.e., like a bond). See related article here, Wall Street Journal.
Jumbo Mortgages And Securitization, Steven D. Dolvin
Jumbo Mortgages And Securitization, Steven D. Dolvin
All Chapters
After a home buyer secures a loan from a bank (i.e., a mortgage), the bank often securitizes the loans, which means they package them for sale to investors. This process is much easier if the loans are backed by Fannie and Freddie, the government sponsored mortgage agencies. Fannie and Freddie, however, will only back loans below certain values -- the so-called jumbo loans. This amount has generally been capped at $417,000 (although higher in certain high-cost areas). Regulators plan to lower these caps, which means jumbo loans may be harder to come by since it will be more difficult to …
