Teaching Strategy Through Projects: A Bridge From Academia To Strategy Practice, Ravi Chinta Oct 2013

Teaching Strategy Through Projects: A Bridge From Academia To Strategy Practice, Ravi Chinta

Journal of Executive Education

In line with Schmidt-Wilk’s (2007) call for promoting the scholarship of teaching and learning, this paper outlines the design, implementation and evaluation of an innovative teaching approach emphasizing the practice of strategy through strategy projects. Learning-by-doing is accomplished in this course by employing directed learning by and across teams. Learning outcomes for this applied course are presented from the perspectives of the students, instructor, and an outside observer who is expert in the subject matter. Problems faced during the implementation of this teaching method are also discussed. We find that work in strategy projects provides the students a richer learning …

An Assessment Of User Response To Phishing Attacks: The Effects Of Fear And Self-Confidence, Deanna House Oct 2013

An Assessment Of User Response To Phishing Attacks: The Effects Of Fear And Self-Confidence, Deanna House

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations - Archive

Phishing attacks have threatened the security of both home users and organizations in recent years. Individuals of varying levels of computer proficiency are potential targets for a phishing attack; all that is needed is an email address and Internet access. Phishing uses social engineering to fraudulently obtain information that is confidential or sensitive. Individuals are targeted to take action by clicking on a link or providing information. At present, phishing research is lacking in both theory and actual behavioral data. This research aims to fill that gap by introducing a new model and collecting data from multiple sources (including an …

The Competitive Dynamics Of A Firm's Capacity Position And Inventory Leanness Activities: Evidence From Us Manufacturing Industries, Rajat Mishra Oct 2013

The Competitive Dynamics Of A Firm's Capacity Position And Inventory Leanness Activities: Evidence From Us Manufacturing Industries, Rajat Mishra

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations - Archive

The notion of `perennial gale of creative destruction' by Schumpeter and Austrian economics has been researched in the field of strategic management to study the competitive dynamics among firms' rivalrous activities. However, its application is sparse in operations management. With the advancement of the field and the increasing pressure on the firms, the strategies regarding operations planning and control are argued to be not just internal according to the conventional norms of operations management, but these strategic moves will be impacted by the moves of their immediate rivals. This competitive imitation is studied in the areas of inventory management and …

Ethical Issues In Knowledge Management: Conflict Of Knowledge Ownership, Isabel D. W. Rechberg, Jawad Syed Oct 2013

Ethical Issues In Knowledge Management: Conflict Of Knowledge Ownership, Isabel D. W. Rechberg, Jawad Syed

Publications and Research

Purpose: This paper reviews ethical issues inherent in the theorisation and practice of knowledge management (KM) with specific attention to the conflict of knowledge ownership between organisations and individual employees.

Design/methodology/approach: Relevant literature was identified and reviewed via EBSCO host and ISIWeb.

Findings: The paper notes that knowledge, although rooted in individuals, is often claimed or treated as owned by organisations, creating a conflict of knowledge ownership. The paper argues that such an approach to appropriation and management of knowledge leads to tension in knowledge processes between organisations and individuals, and also among individuals. This situation may, in turn, jeopardise …

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: October 18, 2013, Eric Thompson, William Walstad, Shannon Mcclure, Mihdi Vahedi

Leading Economic Indicator Reports

The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) rose by 0.95% during September 2013. The increase in the LEI-N, which predicts economic growth in the state six months in the future, signals that the Nebraska economy will grow at a modest pace over the remainder of the year and in early 2014. Most of the increase in the LEI-N was due to a significant drop in initial unemployment claims in Nebraska during September. This drop in Nebraska claims followed a national trend. Among other components of the leading indicator, building permits and airline passenger counts both rose. There also was a …

E-Learning Tools For Andragogy: A Scale Model Of Technology-Based Active Learning, Ying Wang, Kai S. Koong, Jun Sun Oct 2013

E-Learning Tools For Andragogy: A Scale Model Of Technology-Based Active Learning, Ying Wang, Kai S. Koong, Jun Sun

Information Systems Faculty Publications

Andragogy is an educational philosophy on how to facilitate active learning for adult students. It requires instructors to engage students in various learning activities, including problem solving, essay writing, discussions, group projects, and so on. The challenge is how to facilitate student participation and assess learning outcomes. The emergence of e-learning tools, such as Discussion Board, Wiki, Blogs, and Wimba provide technical support for the new learning approach. Based on the review of information systems and education literature, this study develops a taxonomy of e-learning tools. In particular, it proposes a scale model based on the premise that e-learning tools …

Contractually Adopted Fiduciary Duty, D. Gordon Smith Oct 2013

Contractually Adopted Fiduciary Duty, D. Gordon Smith

Faculty Scholarship

The Delaware Supreme Court recently referred to “contractually adopted fiduciary duties.” Although some commentators, including Larry Ribstein, view fiduciary duties as a type of contract term, the notion of contractually adopted fiduciary duties is incoherent. The need to opt in to fiduciary duties would arise in only two circumstances: (1) fiduciary relationships that do not invoke fiduciary duties without contractual authorization, and (2) nonfiduciary relationships in which the parties wish to invoke fiduciary duties that would otherwise be absent. The first category of relationships does not exist, as courts impose fiduciary duties when the structure of a relationship indicates that …

Creating The Marketing Executive Of The Future Using Key Deming Principles, Francis Petit Oct 2013

Creating The Marketing Executive Of The Future Using Key Deming Principles, Francis Petit

Journal of Executive Education

The academic literature is robust in terms of how organizations can improve its innovation, sales and new product development processes as well as its marketing management program. Yet very little has been written on the methods in which organizations can cultivate and develop future marketing leaders. With this as a background, the purpose of this research is twofold. It will first link the overlap that exists between the Deming Philosophy of Management with specific marketing management frameworks within the literature. It will then analyze principles within Deming’s 14 Points and how essential they are in creating future marketing executives. The …

Executive Mba’S Accounting Skill Acquisition: An Accounting Boot-Camp Approach, Ernest A. Capozzoli Oct 2013

Executive Mba’S Accounting Skill Acquisition: An Accounting Boot-Camp Approach, Ernest A. Capozzoli

Journal of Executive Education

Executive MBA programs have grown in popularity in the United States as well as in many other countries. These programs accept students from a broad range of professional backgrounds: corporate executives, entrepreneurs, physicians, nurses, accountants and engineers to name a few. These individuals also come from many sectors and organizations: the public sector, the private sector, for profit organizations, non-profit organizations, and more. Given the diversity of backgrounds and work experience of these individuals, it is a difficult task ensuring minimum business skill levels necessary to be successful in an EMBA program. This paper will examine the results of using …

Executive Mba Capstone Projects At Rit Saunders College Of Business: An Enriching Experience For All, Robert Boehner, Brian O’Neil

Journal of Executive Education

Education of managers in academic programs such as Executive MBA programs presents a unique challenge to college administrators and faculty. Executive students are more demanding and critical and value experiential education more than students in undergraduate or MBA programs. Also compared to regular MBA students, executive students want to understand management in a more holistic way. They want to see the linkages between subject matter taught by different academic disciplines and understand how experienced managers can sort through the details, see the big picture, and make effective decisions. Over the years Executive MBA programs have used a variety of innovative …

Beyond Problems And Cases: Discussion Materials For Accounting In Executive Programs Business School, Sharon M. Bruns, William J. Bruns Oct 2013

Beyond Problems And Cases: Discussion Materials For Accounting In Executive Programs Business School, Sharon M. Bruns, William J. Bruns

Journal of Executive Education

Selection or development of classroom materials for an accounting class in an executive program is complicated by the fact that some students enter the program with a substantial knowledge of accounting while others may have no background at all. Furthermore, general management programs do not usually focus on making all students equally knowledgeable about what accountants do and how to use the information that accounting provides. Problems and cases are sometimes not successful as discussion materials in the mixed audience class because some students are not challenged while others are overwhelmed because of their lack of exposure to the methods …

The Effects Of Computer Mediated Communication On Computer-Based Training, Mark A. Revels Oct 2013

The Effects Of Computer Mediated Communication On Computer-Based Training, Mark A. Revels

Journal of Executive Education

Student performance using computer-based training (CBT) may be related to the degree of interaction that occurs between students and the instructor, or between students and each other. This is significant in that the individualized nature of CBT (and perhaps Web-based training) is contrary to the social interaction needs of students. Using relevant pedagogical and social communication theories as a basis, this study employed empirical research methods on undergraduate participants to achieve the following objectives: to explore the use of computer mediated communication (CMC) as a surrogate for face-to-face interaction with CBT students, and to provide research-based recommendations for human resource …

Crisis Leadership For The New Reality Ahead, Barbara S. Gainey Oct 2013

Crisis Leadership For The New Reality Ahead, Barbara S. Gainey

Journal of Executive Education

It is too easy, according to business consultant Laurence Barton, Ph.D., for businesses to operate on cruise control, sure of the familiarity of the road and without the protection of a current crisis response plan that could offer some protection for the bumps and hazards to come. Numerous researchers, however, are sounding the alarm. Without the sense of urgency of a 9/11-scale crisis, the number of organizations without current crisis plans in place is slowly decreasing, according to a 2005 American Management Association study. Yet the warning signs of uncharted territory ahead are everywhere. Organizations must prepare for new crises …
