Water And Climate: Perceptions Of Nonmetropolitan Nebraskans: 2013 Nebraska Rural Poll Results, Rebecca J. Vogt, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel, Randolph L. Cantrell, Bradley Lubben Jan 2013

Water And Climate: Perceptions Of Nonmetropolitan Nebraskans: 2013 Nebraska Rural Poll Results, Rebecca J. Vogt, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel, Randolph L. Cantrell, Bradley Lubben

Nebraska Rural Poll

Many rural Nebraskans have experienced loss of wildlife and wildlife habitat, voluntary decrease in water usage, decreased farm production and wildfires to some extent as a result of last year’s drought. The majority of persons with occupations in agriculture have experienced decreased farm production and loss of business income as a result of last year’s drought.

Most rural Nebraskans rate indoor use in existing homes and agricultural uses (irrigation and livestock) as high priority uses of water. Uses of water that were not ranked very high include swimming pools for individual homes, watering golf courses and transferring water to other …

Calibrating Growth In The Ambitious Sme: Growth Mapping As A New Direction In Business Model Visualisation, Pat Daly, James S. Walsh Jan 2013

Calibrating Growth In The Ambitious Sme: Growth Mapping As A New Direction In Business Model Visualisation, Pat Daly, James S. Walsh

Irish Business Journal

Research relating to management assumptions1 has largely being confined to mature industries where they are readily recognisable as influential business variables in finance, economics, organisational and business development. These studies have primarily considered senior managerial assumptions as part of the cognitive architecture of the firm, driving many developmental and growth processes of the organisation. This perspective of assumptions acting as intellectual assets of the organisation supporting the firm and its development is however largely absent from entrepreneurial and small business research. This is somewhat surprising given that research on the small firm suggests that entrepreneurs tend to operate on a …

Measurement Of The Effect Of Policy Changes On Volatility In Dairy Markets1, Eoin Kelly, Declan O'Connor, Michael Keane Jan 2013

Measurement Of The Effect Of Policy Changes On Volatility In Dairy Markets1, Eoin Kelly, Declan O'Connor, Michael Keane

Irish Business Journal

Volatility in dairy commodity markets has become a major concern for many in the dairy supply chain and is likely to remain so in the future. Changes to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) over the past decade have more closely aligned EU and World prices and their associated volatilities. The aim of this paper is to measure volatility at farm level in Ireland over time, identify possible reasons for the increased volatility and identify ways of reducing volatility. Statistical measures such as coefficient of variation (CV) and annualised standard deviation are used to provide measures of past volatility and its …

Critical Success Factors In The Promotion Of Sustainable Rural Tourism By Destination Marketing Organisations: A Study Of Ballyhoura Fáilte, Louise Nugent, Siobhán Lynch Jan 2013

Critical Success Factors In The Promotion Of Sustainable Rural Tourism By Destination Marketing Organisations: A Study Of Ballyhoura Fáilte, Louise Nugent, Siobhán Lynch

Irish Business Journal

With the Irish tourism industry maturing, destination marketing organisations (DMOs) must meet tourists’ changing expectations. For rural tourism destinations, the challenge lies in ensuring that they obtain a position of sustainability in the Irish tourism industry (Department of Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht, 2011). Due to the highly volatile nature of the Irish rural tourism industry, treating rural tourism like any other product does not comply with the new approach to destination marketing management, which considers the resources available, the environment, the tourist, and the residents themselves (Buhalis, 2000; Pike, 2008). The aim of this study is to carry out a …

Developing The External Engagement Process In Higher Education Through Effective Change And Technology, Irene Sheridan, Colm Barry-Murphy, Heather Madden Jan 2013

Developing The External Engagement Process In Higher Education Through Effective Change And Technology, Irene Sheridan, Colm Barry-Murphy, Heather Madden

Irish Business Journal

Engagement with external organisations and enterprises is increasingly part of the higher education mission and the contribution of universities to local and regional economic and social development remains an important, but difficult to evidence, metric for Higher Education Institutions (HEI). This paper explores the implementation of a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system to support external engagement and to build business intelligence in one higher education institution in Ireland. Building on the findings of the Roadmap for Employment-Academic Partnership (REAP) project, through a structured process towards a professional case management approach to interactions this project focuses on the introduction of a …

The Use Of Fear Appeals To Communicate Public Health Messages, Katie Mcsweeney, Simon Stephens

Irish Business Journal

This paper provides an insight into the use of fear appeals to communicate a public health message. A fear appeal is a means of persuasion that threatens the audience with a negative, physical, psychological, and/or social consequence that is likely to occur if they engage in a particular behaviour. This paper explores: the effectiveness of fear appeals; the impact gender and age have on the effectiveness of a fear appeals; and ethical concerns relating to fear appeal advertising. This study comprises a two stage data collection process: focus groups and depth interviews. Firstly, two focus groups were conducted. The participants …

Exploring The Influence Of Collaborative Capabilities On Focal Firm Product Outcomes ;The Mediating Role Of Supplier Capabilities, Kenneth D. Hall Jan 2013

Exploring The Influence Of Collaborative Capabilities On Focal Firm Product Outcomes ;The Mediating Role Of Supplier Capabilities, Kenneth D. Hall

ETD Archive

As markets become more turbulent, dynamic, and competitive, and as customers become more sophisticated and demanding, the scope of capabilities and resources needed to meet customer needs, wants, and desires are less likely to be found in any one firm. Instead, firms must develop strong collaborative capabilities. Though the benefits of interfirm collaboration for focal firms (the firms responsible for the final offering) and suppliers are reasonably well understood, effectiveness and efficiency in collaboration remain elusive for many firms. It is likely that the collaborative capabilities of both focal firms and key suppliers contribute to effective collaboration, and that the …

Investigations Into The Robustness Of Sustainable Real Estate Premiums And Commercial Real Estate Econometrics, Spenser J. Robinson Jan 2013

Investigations Into The Robustness Of Sustainable Real Estate Premiums And Commercial Real Estate Econometrics, Spenser J. Robinson

ETD Archive

This dissertation consists of three papers, all using CoStar Group, Inc. Commercial Real Estate (CRE) data. The rst two papers explore Sustainable Real Estate (Energy STAR and LEED building) rental premiums. The third paper develops and tests a new method for the empirical testing of CRE. Paper number one, Managing Well by Managing Good, is the rst paper to argue against the existence of sustainable real estate premiums. It demonstrates that some of the Sustainable Real Estate rent premiums previously shown in the literature are neither theoretically nor empirically supported. In addition to presenting theoretical arguments against the premiums, the …

The Asymmetric Impacts Of Good And Bad News On Opinion Divergence: Evidence From Revisions To The S&P 500 Index, Jin Yu, Haigang Zhou Jan 2013

The Asymmetric Impacts Of Good And Bad News On Opinion Divergence: Evidence From Revisions To The S&P 500 Index, Jin Yu, Haigang Zhou

Business Faculty Publications

Motivated by the ambiguity theory of Epstein and Schneider (2003, 2008), we hypothesize that investors' beliefs on the prospects of firms converge upon the arrival of bad news, but do not converge - or even further diverge - on the arrival of good news. We expect firms with high divergence in opinions to experience lower stock returns around the announcements of bad news but not for good news. Using revisions to the S&P 500 index between 1962 and 2008 as information events, we find overwhelming support for the hypothesis. The results are robust to controlling for alternative hypotheses of price …

Application Of Customer Lifetime Value Model In Make-To-Order Manufacturing, Oya I. Tukel, Ashutosh Dixit Jan 2013

Application Of Customer Lifetime Value Model In Make-To-Order Manufacturing, Oya I. Tukel, Ashutosh Dixit

Business Faculty Publications

PURPOSE: The applicability of the customer life time value (CLV) concept goes beyond consumer markets. Specifically, the purpose of this paper is to show how a make-to-order manufacturing company in a supply chain can set customer-focus manufacturing strategies using CLV. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Data from an integrated steel plant is used to calculate the life time value of customers based on the past value, the potential value, and their loyalty. The past value of a customer is based on the historical data and the future value of a customer is then forecasted. The loyalty index of a customer is determined by survey …

Lead-Time Quotation When Customers Are Sensitive To Reputation, Susan A. Slotnick Jan 2013

Lead-Time Quotation When Customers Are Sensitive To Reputation, Susan A. Slotnick

Business Faculty Publications

Firms consider a variety of factors when making lead-time promises, including current shop status and the size of the incoming order. The profit-maximising model presented in this paper is the first to include reputation effects explicitly in a lend-time optimisation model. Reputation is considered to be the lasting effect on the market of a firm's delivery performance over time, and so it affects the future as well as the current profits. The model is complicated, and a counter-example demonstrates that qualitative monotonicity results are not obtainable. A computational study explores the relationships between shop status, order size, reputation, market characteristics …

Price Discount Perception: Consumers' Numeric Interpretation Of Semantic Price Claims, Albert J. Della Bitta, Patricia A. Norberg Jan 2013

Price Discount Perception: Consumers' Numeric Interpretation Of Semantic Price Claims, Albert J. Della Bitta, Patricia A. Norberg

College of Business Faculty Publications

Behavioral pricing research includes a considerable amount of focus on the effects of semantic cues (phrases) used to label reference and offer prices in price promotions, but a related type of semantic claim also frequently used in price promotions has continued to escape research attention - claims that attempt to encourage purchases by describing the consequences of buying at the discounted price (e.g. Super Savings). Using a variety of methods and conceptual foundations, the present research is the first to comprehensively study consumers' discount and value associations of these semantic claims. In a series of three studies, we find evidence …

The Relationship Of Market Orientation, Absorptive Capaci-Ty, Organizational Learning, And Positional Advantage To Corporate Performance In Turbulent And Non-Turbulent Environments, Daniel Patrick Friesen Jan 2013

The Relationship Of Market Orientation, Absorptive Capaci-Ty, Organizational Learning, And Positional Advantage To Corporate Performance In Turbulent And Non-Turbulent Environments, Daniel Patrick Friesen

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation adds to what we know about the effects of Market Orientation and Organizational Learning on Positional Advantage and on Organizational Outcomes by introducing the concept of Absorptive Capacity from the management literature. Though each is related to organizational learning, market orientation and absorptive ca-pacity have not been presented together in a structural model with organizational learning as a higher order construct. In this paper, I bring Market Orientation and Absorptive Ca-pacity together as higher-order constructs indicating Organizational Learning as a third order construct. Organizational Learning in turn indicates Positional Advantage as a fourth order construct, which also is …

Engineering Problem Solving And Sustained Learning: A Mixed Methods Study To Explore The Dynamics Of Engineering Knowledge Creation, Rachel Itabashi-Campbell Jan 2013

Engineering Problem Solving And Sustained Learning: A Mixed Methods Study To Explore The Dynamics Of Engineering Knowledge Creation, Rachel Itabashi-Campbell

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation research explores processes by which engineering problem solving (EPS) results in sustained organizational learning. Approaching from a constructionist perspective, the study empirically examines the knowledge creation dynamics instigated by product-related problems using a mixed methods research approach. The research has identified the Japanese concept of ba, defined in this study as "shared experiential space," as a key construct that explains the phenomena of interest. A new framework that the study has developed, which interprets EPS as an epistemic journey to attain system-wide improvements, is highly complementary to the traditional structured routine based approaches to engineering operations and …

Subordinate-Supervisor Demographic And Perceived Value Similarity: Relationships To Subordinate Perceptions Of Organizational Justice, Charles Levi Wells, Iv Jan 2013

Subordinate-Supervisor Demographic And Perceived Value Similarity: Relationships To Subordinate Perceptions Of Organizational Justice, Charles Levi Wells, Iv

Wayne State University Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the empirical relationship between subordinate-supervisor demographic and value similarity with subordinate perceptions of organizational justice using three structural equation models. The first model indicated that subordinate-supervisor demographic and value similarity were directly related to subordinate perceptions of organizational justice (Direct Model). The second model indicated that subordinate perceived value similarity with their supervisor mediated the relationship between the subordinate-supervisor demographic similarity and subordinate perceptions of organizational justice (Mediated Model). The last model indicated subordinate perceived value similarity with their supervisor moderated the relationship between subordinate-supervisor demographic similarity and subordinate perceptions of organizational …

A Global Comparison Of Insider Trading Regulations, James H. Thompson Jan 2013

A Global Comparison Of Insider Trading Regulations, James H. Thompson

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

As the business world continues to expand in global markets, trading of shares, bonds, derivatives and other instruments continues to increase. One form of trading that has received considerable interest in recent years is insider trading. Insider trading occurs when individuals with potential access to non-public information about a corporation buy or sell stock of that corporation. When the information is material and non-public, such trading is illegal. However, if the trading is done in a manner that does not take advantage of non-public information, it is often permissible. This study compares insider trading laws, penalties, and convictions in countries …

Online Course Evaluations Response Rates, Faruk Guder, Mary Malliaris Jan 2013

Online Course Evaluations Response Rates, Faruk Guder, Mary Malliaris

Information Systems and Operations Management: Faculty Publications & Other Works

This paper studies the reasons for low response rates in online evaluations. Survey data are collected from the students to understand factors that might affect student participation in the course evaluation process. When course evaluations were opened to the student body, an email announcement was sent to all students, and a reminder email was sent a week later. Our study showed that participation rates increased not only when emails were sent, but also when faculty used in-class time to emphasize the importance of completing the evaluations.

Determinants Of Causal Ambiguity And Difficulty Of Knowledge Transfer Within The Firm, Ugur Uygur Jan 2013

Determinants Of Causal Ambiguity And Difficulty Of Knowledge Transfer Within The Firm, Ugur Uygur

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The knowledge-based view of the firm portrays knowledge assets as the basis of sustainable competitive advantage. However, leveraging the knowledge available to the firm is not straightforward. The transfer of best practices within the firm or the replication of a certain routine poses challenges for managers. Causal ambiguity of knowledge makes it difficult to transfer practices into other contexts within the firm. In this paper, a new framework is proposed that identifies four antecedents to causal ambiguity: complexity, tacitness, relevance to the existing knowledge base, and the locality of knowledge. The paper concludes with the implications of the framework.

The Federal Reserve’s AMLF program was designed to provide liquidity to money market funds (MMFs). Between September 2008 and May 2009, the program made $217 billion in non-recourse loans to depository institutions and bank holding companies to purchase asset-backed commercial paper from MMFs. JP Morgan and State Street dominated the program, accounting for over 90% of all loans made. Our analysis suggests that JP Morgan exhibited more self-dealing behavior than State Street. We find that JP Morgan and State Street earned economically and statistically significant cumulative returns of 2.28% and 2.49% (respectively) over the first seven days of the program …

Hare And Tortoise: How Do Price Change Patterns Affect Propensity To Book, Zhuoyang Li Jan 2013

Hare And Tortoise: How Do Price Change Patterns Affect Propensity To Book, Zhuoyang Li

Open Access Theses

With an increasing using of online booking, hotel room rate changing information becomes nearly transparent to consumers. And this trend encourages deal-seeking consumer behaviors, which are based on price change information. So hotels can influence consumers' propensity to book through managing price changes. The present study aims at examining consumers' propensity to book in a more realistic context by introducing two conditions: different price changing patterns and interaction between price-moving trends and price patterns. It is important for hotel managers to understand the impact of different price change trends and patterns because price changes can directly affect consumer perception and …

Asymmetry And Persistence Of Energy Price Volatility, Mohammad Zahid Hasan, Selim Akhter, Fazle Rabbi Jan 2013

Asymmetry And Persistence Of Energy Price Volatility, Mohammad Zahid Hasan, Selim Akhter, Fazle Rabbi

Business Papers and Journal Articles

This study estimates and compares the asymmetry and persistence of volatility of crude oil, natural gas and coal- three main sources of energy. This study also evaluates the effect of recent Global Financial Crisis (GFC) on the return and volatility of these energy prices. Threshold GARCH (TGARCH) and fractionally integrated GARCH (FIGARCH) model are employed to facilitate the study. The estimated results show that coal return volatility exhibits strong mean reversion whereas crude oil and natural gas return volatility endures shocks for relatively higher period. The estimated results also confirm that volatility of crude oil and natural gas increases after …
