CO2 concentration in the atmosphere has been rising at a rapid rate. As per the numbers quoted, the concentration has surpassed the safest upper limit suggested by the scientists. CO2 is a green-house gas and is partially responsible for global warming. With the current rate of emissions, it poses a threat to the planet's future and prosperity. Transportation contributes 30% of the overall CO2 emissions. Companies that use transportation are taking sustainability initiatives to reduce the emissions. In May 2012, the Chinese government mandated that once the Big Four accounting (KPMG, PwC, Ernst & Young, and Deloitte) joint venture agreements expire, the firms must begin to localize most of the senior management. Although most of the Big Four firms employ many locals, there are more expatriate partners than Chinese counterparts. Because of this, the Big Four firms must quickly find qualified local senior management personnel. Amongst compliance and global regulatory issues, the Big Four firms must develop a strategy for localizing. This thesis discusses various cultural aspects that have influenced accounting. Hofestede (1984) and Gray (1988) conducted studies and observations of the cultural dimensions and values that have contributed to culture and accounting research. National culture is broad in its influences, but affects the smallest aspects of society-even accounting. Accounting is also influenced by organizational culture, the overall environment in which a company functions. Next is ethics, an integral aspect of accounting, persuaded by the culture in which it is derived. A critical omission in the coworker influence literature is how a coworker influences a closely related (focal) employee’s job performance behaviors and whether this influence is contingent on that coworker’s own behaviors. By integrating social information processing and social cognitive theories with social exchange and role theories, we hypothesize that there are, at least, three distinct types of coworker dyadic influence. Accordingly, we develop and test a moderated mediation model to explicate such influence. Two multi-source, field-design studies conducted in Hong Kong supported the modeled relationships in that employee role ambiguity partially mediated the relationships between coworker-employee exchange (CEX) and …

Three Essays On Return Predictability And Decentralized Investment Management, Dashan Huang

My research field is asset pricing with a focus on return predictability, innovation and market efficiency, and delegated investment management.

In Chapter 1, "Maximum Return Predictability", I develop two theoretical upper bounds on the R2 of the regression of stock returns on predictive variables. Empirically, I found that the predictive R2s are significantly larger than the upper bounds, implying that existing asset pricing models are incapable of explaining the degree of return predictability. For example, the predictive R2 of the price dividend ratio for the U.S. market forecasting is 0.27% with monthly data. However, the theoretical upper bound is at …

Does Specialization Matter? An Investigation Of Female Di And Diii Soccer Players And The Pathways That Led Them To The Collegiate Level, Anne Gavett, Jase Miller, Cuyla Coogan, Kelly Burnett

Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD

This paper investigates whether current female collegiate soccer players decided to diversify or specialize in high school, while noting the key influential factors that impacted their decision making process. During the 2012-2013 season, a survey was completed by 114 female collegiate (DI and DIII) soccer players. The findings indicated that there is no difference between female athletes who specialized or diversified in high school in regards to playing at the collegiate level. The results from this study attempt to further clarify previous research that examines if specialization or diversification in high school is necessary to reach the collegiate level.

Leading Economic Indicator Reports

The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) declined by 0.39% during March 2013. The decrease in the LEI-N, which predicts economic growth in the state six months in the future, suggests weak economic growth in Nebraska during the summer of 2013. Looking at individual components of the LEI-N, five of the six components of the LEI-N declined during March. Single-family building permits dropped, as did airline passengers counts. There was an increase in initial claims for unemployment insurance, and an increase in the value of the U.S. dollar during March. The increase in the value of the dollar would tend …
