In today's open business environments, innovation happens in globally dispersed organizations that exchange technological knowledge across increasingly permeable boundaries. Innovation intermediaries play an important role in these technology transfer processes. They operate as middle-men between solution seekers (companies seeking technological knowledge for solving their problems) and problem solvers (experts with specialized knowledge and solutions) and thus help to connect suppliers and customers of technological knowledge. This study investigates the effect the 2008 economic crisis had on the relationship between CEO compensation and firm performance measures for S&P 500 financial companies. The findings assist S&P 500 financial companies to better determine compensation levels for CEOs by accounting for performance as well as account for the most recent valley in the economic cycle. The study uses a database of CEO compensation data for S&P 500 financial firms from both before and after the crisis. The database also contains firm performance data for the respective firms and years. The relationship is explored using separate multiple regression models, then …

General Assembly at the height of the Cold War, he made a commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear energy. That commitment is now being threatened: by activists who oppose building a storage depository for nuclear waste and by energy policies that favor any alternative to fossil fuels except a nuclear one.

Nicole Foregren-Velasquez, new faculty member with a joint appointment in the School of Accountancy and Management Information Systems departments, recently learned that her proposal to study knowledge management at NASA has received approval and funding in the amount of $15,000. This research engagement will investigate the use and impacts of knowledge management systems by system administrators, and recommend future directions for development and implementation. This is a particularly interesting project because the different NASA sites have drastically different cultures and norms. Outcomes of this project will include full academic publishing rights. The project will be completed over the summer.

The most common mistake made by managers, when incorporating informatics into their business model, is under-utilizing the technological capacity of their resources and investing in extraneous functions. In this paper I attempt to analyze and explain the important of certain indigenous credit agreements in Botswana. Rotating Savings and Credit Associations are agreements made by a group of people who create a communal fund which rotates around the group until each member had had access to the pooled resource. These agreements are informal and most commonly found in the poorer traditional sectors of Botswana’s economy.

Furthermore, I attempt to explain why these agreements can be best understood using Elinor Ostrom’s common-pool resource analysis. This framework explains why these agreements are so successful in creating a source of capital, …

Economics Honors Projects

Public health sectors around the world strive to provide accessible and affordable care. Tight government budgets and growing populations lead countries to consider adding or raising charges to health care consumers. These user fees may affect the quality, equity and revenue of health care. This paper investigates the impact of user fees on notifications of tuberculosis. In the panel data composed of 176 countries from 1960 to 2012, I find no evidence that suggests user fees increase tuberculosis. In contrast, I find strong and robust evidence suggesting user fees are associated with fewer new cases of tuberculosis.

The $1.2 trillion U.S. tax expenditures in 2011: A Deeper look into the Corporate Tax Expenditures examines U.S. Federal government revenue losses attributed to tax expenditures. This paper will discuss the rationale, functions, and benefits of the 173 tax expenditures within the U.S. Tax Code. Specifically, this paper will concentrate on three significant provisions that benefit corporations predominantly: accelerated depreciation of machinery and equipment, deferral of income from controlled foreign corporations, and deduction for US production activities.
