Understanding The Emergence Of New Institutional Logics: A Boundary Story, Nicolas Battard, Paul Donnelly, Vincent Mangematin Jul 2013

Understanding The Emergence Of New Institutional Logics: A Boundary Story, Nicolas Battard, Paul Donnelly, Vincent Mangematin

Conference papers

We contribute to the literature of institutional logics by integrating a complementary view which is of composite boundary. We integrate the physical, social, and mental boundaries that encompass both the material and symbolic aspects of institutions in order to study the institutional change of knowledge – 'Mode 1 vs. 'Mode 2'. We identified three strategies that describe the extent to which scientists engage in this new area. Embracing is characterised by a commitment to the emerging area of nanoscience and nanotechnology at every level of boundary. While the second strategy – adjusting – describes a partial commitment, the third and …

Upstream Corporate Social Responsibility: The Evolution From Contract Responsibility To Full Producer Responsibility, Judith Schrempf-Stirling, Guido Palazzo Jul 2013

Upstream Corporate Social Responsibility: The Evolution From Contract Responsibility To Full Producer Responsibility, Judith Schrempf-Stirling, Guido Palazzo

Management Faculty Publications

The debate about the appropriate standards for upstream corporate social responsibility (CSR) of multinational corporations (MNCs) has been on the public and academic agenda for some three decades. The debate originally focused narrowly on “contract responsibility” of MNCs for monitoring of upstream contractors for “sweatshop” working conditions violating employee rights. The authors argue that the MNC upstream responsibility debate has shifted qualitatively over time to “full producer responsibility” involving an expansion from “contract responsibility” in three distinct dimensions. First, there is an expansion of scope from working conditions to human rights and social and environmental impacts broadly defined. Second, there …

What Do Accelerators Do? Insights From Incubators And Angels, Susan L. Cohen Jul 2013

What Do Accelerators Do? Insights From Incubators And Angels, Susan L. Cohen

Management Faculty Publications

What do accelerators do? Broadly speaking, they help ventures define and build their initial products, identify promising customer segments, and secure resources, including capital and employees. More specifically, accelerator programs are programs of limited-duration—lasting about three months—that help cohorts of startups with the new venture process. They usually provide a small amount of seed capital, plus working space. They also offer a plethora of networking opportunities, with both peer ventures and mentors, who might be successful entrepreneurs, program graduates, venture capitalists, angel investors, or even corporate executives. Finally, most programs end with a grand event, a “demo day” where ventures …

Outsourcing Through Competition: What Is The Best Competition Parameter?, Ehsan Elahi Jul 2013

Outsourcing Through Competition: What Is The Best Competition Parameter?, Ehsan Elahi

Management Science and Information Systems Faculty Publication Series

In this paper we consider a single buyer who wants to outsource the manufacturing of a product to N potential suppliers. The buyer’s objective is to maximize the service level she receives from the suppliers. The suppliers compete for the buyer’s demand based on a competition parameter which the buyer announces along with an allocation rule. We model each supplier as a make-to-stock queueing system. Using a simple proportional allocation function, we compare two competition parameters: service level and inventory level. We show that inventory competition creates a higher overall service level for the buyer. We also show an optimal …

Boise State On Business: Companies Must Balance Feelings And Facts, Michael Lee, Nicholas Gaudioso Jr.

Accountancy Faculty Publications and Presentations

Many companies are founded with innovation, enthusiasm and hopes for success. In its inaugural days, the business founder/CEO is able to personally drive the company's success with a passion while wearing multiple hats and controlling all aspects of the business operations. They understand their market, can effectively communicate their chosen mission to employees and have a good "feel" for their cost and margins.

However, there comes a point where sales grow, new employees are hired and operations expand. All of a sudden, it becomes evident that managing by "feel" is not enough. Founders/CEOs must transition from managing by "feel" to …

Accumulating And Spending Retirement Assets: A Behavioral Finance Explanation, Diane K. Schooley-Pettis, Debra Drecnik Worden

Marketing Faculty Publications and Presentations

Increasing uncertainty surrounding social security benefits and public sector pension plans is pushing retirement savings into the spotlight. This study finds that education, financial discipline, and financial sophistication increase the likelihood of participating in a pension or an IRA/Keogh plan. Financial distress decreases the likelihood of setting aside additional funds in an IRA/Keogh plan. Further, the likelihood that an eligible individual will decline an offered pension plan decreases with education and financial discipline and financial sophistication. Controlling for health and marital status, the choice to annuitize retirement assets decreases with age and the desire to take risk.

Product Bundling: Impacts Of Product Heterogeneity And Risk Considerations, Mehdi Sheikhzadeh, Ehsan Elahi Jul 2013

Product Bundling: Impacts Of Product Heterogeneity And Risk Considerations, Mehdi Sheikhzadeh, Ehsan Elahi

Management Science and Information Systems Faculty Publication Series

Bundling has been extensively studied in the literature and its benefits have been manifested through three perspectives of achieving better price discrimination, helping to save costs, and preserving the power for deterring a potential entrant. In this study, we examine two aspects of bundling which have not been studied before. We examine the impact of product heterogeneity on bundling decisions. We also address risk considerations in a bundling problem. Specifically, we consider a retailer who has the option of selling a bundle of two products (pure bundling policy), or selling the products separately (no-bundling policy). The retailer could also face …

The Influence Of Director Stock Ownership And Board Discussion Transparency On Financial Reporting Quality, Jacob M. Rose, Cheri Mazza, Carolyn S. Norman, Anna M. Rose Jul 2013

The Influence Of Director Stock Ownership And Board Discussion Transparency On Financial Reporting Quality, Jacob M. Rose, Cheri Mazza, Carolyn S. Norman, Anna M. Rose

WCBT Faculty Publications

Seventy-two active corporate directors participate in an experiment where management insists on aggressive recognition of revenue, but the chief audit executive proposes a more conservative approach. Results indicate interactive effects of director stock ownership and the transparency of director decisions. Stock-owning directors are more likely to oppose management’s attempts to manage earnings when transparency increases. For non-stock owning directors, however, increasing transparency does not affect the likelihood that directors oppose management’s attempts to manage earnings. The current study challenges suppositions that equate director stock ownership with improved financial reporting and higher corporate governance quality, and it provides evidence that increased …

Exploring Income Supplementation For Farm Sustainability, Elizabeth P. Persson Jul 2013

Exploring Income Supplementation For Farm Sustainability, Elizabeth P. Persson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Sustainable farms are critical to United States’ food independence and they positively contribute to the global economy. Farms in the United States are not sustainable without profitable supplemental income. The purpose of this case study was to explore the historic profitability of farm income supplementation methods. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory served as the conceptual framework. A purposive sample of 25 farmers from 5 regions of the continental United States completed semistructured interviews and described their personal experiences. Archival supplemental income data came from the United States Department of Agriculture census. All the data were analyzed using coded keywords, phrases, …

Decision Styles Of Corporate Leaders: Do Differences Make A Difference, Sherry Sanger Jul 2013

Decision Styles Of Corporate Leaders: Do Differences Make A Difference, Sherry Sanger

Student Scholarship

Ineffective decision making at the top rungs of organizations is a perennial concern, yet empirical research into the decision styles of corporate leaders is scant. Conceptually sound and psychometrically validated constructs for alternative decision styles of corporate leaders are rare. This study develops and validates a multi-dimensional measure of different decision styles used by corporate leaders. Structural equation modeling is used to examine if different decision styles are associated with different performance outcomes for strategic decisions related to new opportunities. The three dimensions of decision styles evidence convergent and discriminant validity in a sample of 100 Corporate Leaders. In addition, …

Business English As A Lingua Franca In Advertising Texts In The Arabian Gulf: Analyzing The Attitudes Of The Emirati Community, Catherine Nickerson, Belinda Crawford Camiciottoli Jul 2013

Business English As A Lingua Franca In Advertising Texts In The Arabian Gulf: Analyzing The Attitudes Of The Emirati Community, Catherine Nickerson, Belinda Crawford Camiciottoli

All Works

Scholars have become increasingly interested in how organizations communicate with external stakeholders, such as consumers. Recent studies have looked specifically at consumer response to the use of English in advertising texts in a number of different European countries. The use of English in such texts is part of a commonly used marketing strategy to standardize advertising campaigns that builds on the assumption that English is not only neutral but also widely understood. This article presents the results of a survey of the attitudes of Emirati consumers toward the use of English in advertising texts in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). …

Compensation Tournaments, Kevin F. Hallock Jul 2013

Compensation Tournaments, Kevin F. Hallock

Economics Faculty Publications

From beach volleyball and soccer to tennis and golf to playoffs for the Little League World Series, tournament play has lessons for workplace compensation. A tournament scheme can motivate workers the same if workers are risk neutral. A rich place to study tournament pay, performance, output, effort and the like is professional golf, because so much is measured. Great data are available on the incentive structure; for example, the distance in dollars between the first place price and the second place prize, and the distance in dollars between the second place prize and the third place prize, and so on.

Tax Increment Financing Trends In Southern Maine 2001-2011, Kevin Price Jul 2013

Tax Increment Financing Trends In Southern Maine 2001-2011, Kevin Price

Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations

Tax Increment Financing (TIF) is an economic development tool authorized for use in 49 states and the District of Columbia. TIFs are a very popular economic development tool that allow for a low-cost way to fund development projects. A TIF is designed to turn an undesirable or underdeveloped area into a developed, revenue generating area. The restrictions as to the exact types of property that quality for TIF vary from state to state, but they generally are used to target underdeveloped areas to encourage growth. Maine places several limitations on TIFs including acreage caps, a value cap, a municipal indebtedness …

Compensation And Price Delegation For Heterogeneous Sales Force, Jian Chen, Hongyan Xu, Liming Liu Jul 2013

Compensation And Price Delegation For Heterogeneous Sales Force, Jian Chen, Hongyan Xu, Liming Liu

Hong Kong Institute of Business Studies Working Paper Series

A heterogeneous sales force may not be as desirable as a homogeneous sales force for two reasons: premiums are required for all except from one agent type, and only the highest type would work as hard as though they were from a homogeneous sales force. This study revisits the heterogeneous sales force compensation and price delegation problem with type-dependent reservation. We find that an equilibrium separating or pooling compensation contract always exists. Different types of agents may receive premiums, and there are scenarios when no premiums are paid. Retaining centralized pricing provides a tool for regulating agent behavior. More than …

The Cost Of Omitting Credit Channel In Dsge Model, Takeshi Yagihashi Jul 2013

The Cost Of Omitting Credit Channel In Dsge Model, Takeshi Yagihashi

Economics Faculty Publications

This paper discusses whether the parameter invariance problem as in Lucas (1976) applies to the standard new Keynesian DSGE model when the credit channel is left out from its structure. We simulate a financial crisis in which the credit market friction is positive and we shift the monetary policy to stimulate the economy. We evaluate the cost of omitting the credit channel by examining the changes of the estimated model parameters and by using policy outcomes. We find that although some parameters incur nontrivial changes after the policy shift, overall these parameter changes have little impact on the conduct of …

The Effects Of Leader Behavior On Follower Ethical Behavior: Examining The Mediating Roles Of Ethical Efficacy And Moral Disengagement, Noel Palmer Jul 2013

The Effects Of Leader Behavior On Follower Ethical Behavior: Examining The Mediating Roles Of Ethical Efficacy And Moral Disengagement, Noel Palmer

College of Business: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Recent ethical scandals in organizations are often cited when pointing to leaders as the culprits who foster corruption in their organization; however, little empirical work examines the individual processes through which leaders may influence follower ethical decision-making and behavior. Drawing from principles of social cognitive theory and self-efficacy theory (Bandura, 1986, 1997), moral self-regulatory capacities are presented as a means by which leaders may influence followers. Specifically, I hypothesize that leader influence on follower (un)ethical behavior is mediated through follower ethical efficacy beliefs and moral disengagement processes. I also suggest that ethical efficacy interacts with ethical leadership to influence behavior. …

Acquisitions Driven By Stock Overvaluation: Are They Good Deals?, Fangjian Fu, Leming Lin, Micah Officer Jul 2013

Acquisitions Driven By Stock Overvaluation: Are They Good Deals?, Fangjian Fu, Leming Lin, Micah Officer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Theory and recent evidence suggest that overvalued firms can create value for shareholders if they exploit their overvaluation by using their stock as currency to purchase less overvalued firms. We challenge this idea and show that, in practice, overvalued acquirers significantly overpay for their targets. These acquisitions do not, in turn, lead to synergy gains. Moreover, these acquisitions seem to be concentrated among acquirers with the largest governance problems. CEO compensation, not shareholder value creation, appears to be the main motive behind acquisitions by overvalued acquirers.

Dilution In Director Risk Assessments: The Effects Of Diagnostic And Non-Diagnostic Information, Jean Lin Seow Jul 2013

Dilution In Director Risk Assessments: The Effects Of Diagnostic And Non-Diagnostic Information, Jean Lin Seow

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This paper reports the results of an experiment investigating how directors’ identification and evaluation of diagnostic and non-diagnostic information in a financial statement fraud risk assessment setting affects dilution in their risk assessments. My results show that more (less) diluted risk assessments are made when more (fewer) nondiagnostic factors are identified and where less (more) weight is placed on non-diagnostic factors identified as relevant to the judgment decision. Directors with higher levels of technical knowledge are found to identify more diagnostic factors and place greater weight on these factors than directors with lower levels of technical knowledge. Higher levels of …
