End-User Computing Applications, Mary C. Hill, W. Alan Barnes Jul 2011

End-User Computing Applications, Mary C. Hill, W. Alan Barnes

Faculty Articles

Businesses today rely on the work being done by staff using personal computers. The proliferation of personal computers has led to widespread implementation of end-user computing applications. As their name implies, end-user applications are designed, implemented, and controlled by users rather than by IT professionals. End-user applications can be risky for organizations, both with respect to management decision making and to financial reporting. For public companies, the risk involved in these applications has been increased by the requirements of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, which call for management to document end-to-end financial operations and internal control structures. This article review …

From Boom To Doom To Boom: Offshore Financial Centres And Development In Small States, Richard Woodward Jul 2011

From Boom To Doom To Boom: Offshore Financial Centres And Development In Small States, Richard Woodward

Articles

During the 1990s tax havens and offshore financial centres (OFCs) were subject to a string of initiatives designed to raise their tax and regulatory regimes to accepted international standards. Many commentators forecast that this would lead to the demise of OFCs, a worry for the many small states whose economic well being depended heavily on the provision of offshore financial services. Despite this regulatory onslaught many small state OFCs have prospered in the new millennium. This paper seeks to explain this apparent paradox by arguing that (1) international initiatives were riddled with loopholes and exceptions that have been gleefully seized …

This project consists of creating sustainable business plans for a group of diverse retail stores at the mall of SouthPointe Pavilions in Lincoln, Nebraska. A series of interviews took place with five managers at the businesses including: Scheels, Old Chicago, Bed Bath and Beyond, Von Maur, and Barnes and Noble. The questions were based around five different topics including: Technological, Environment, Socio-Cultural, Economic, and Public Policy. The Technological area includes processes with the product (or service) that occur before it arrives, during, and after it is sold. The Public Policy area includes if the business has an environmental policy, how …

Detrimental Effects Of Interventions With The Corporate Governance Mechanisms Of Young Entrepreneurial Firms, Guclu M. Atinc Jul 2011

Detrimental Effects Of Interventions With The Corporate Governance Mechanisms Of Young Entrepreneurial Firms, Guclu M. Atinc

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to assess the post-IPO performance structures of young entrepreneurial firms. Based on the propositions of the signaling model, I propose that the firm IPO performance is a determining factor in post-IPO changes in ownership structures. Furthermore, I contend that the new owners that replace the original ones in young IPO firms will be prone to request changes in corporate governance mechanisms such as top management team membership and the boards of directors based on the need to have their own agents looking after their interests as recommended by the agency theory. Following these alterations …

Two Essays On Managerial Incentives, Hui Liang Jul 2011

Two Essays On Managerial Incentives, Hui Liang

Doctoral Dissertations

Jensen and Meckling (1976) and Jensen (1986) argue that the separation of ownership and control may generate agency problems between managers and shareholders. The equity-based compensation, by tying managerial wealth to firm long-run stock performance, can incentivize managers to be more receptive to undertaking value-increasing financial policies and to improving firm performance therefore can be used as an effective tool to achieve consonance between managers actions and shareholders interest. Over the last two decades, the increased prevalence of equity-based compensation in the form of stock and options, is partially due to an increased acceptance of the alignment effect of equity-based …

Development Of A Proposed Community Action Plan For The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Alicia Milla, Alexis Rodriguez Jul 2011

Development Of A Proposed Community Action Plan For The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Alicia Milla, Alexis Rodriguez

Community Engagement and Collaboration

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is a national organization that was started back in 1970 by two mothers of sons with type 1 diabetes. Since its founding, JDRF has awarded more than $1.5 billion to diabetes research around the world, including $9.9 million of research in San Diego. JDRF is a volunteer-driven organization with thousands of volunteers in locations worldwide. While JDRF is working hard to find a cure and improve the lives of those living with type 1 diabetes, it also has a goal of providing volunteer-led support programs to people with type 1 diabetes and their families. …

What Drives U.S. Banking Mergers: Misvaluation, Gambling Or Envy?, Wenjia Zhang Jul 2011

What Drives U.S. Banking Mergers: Misvaluation, Gambling Or Envy?, Wenjia Zhang

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

The thesis consists of three essays that examine whether U.S. bank mergers are motivated by market inefficiency and managerial psychology biases. Essay I investigates equity misvaluation as a possible driver for United States banking mergers from the perspective of market inefficiency, and finds that bidders tend to use overvalued equity to buy undervalued targets. Essay II, motivated by the cumulative prospect theory of Tversky and Kahneman (1992), tests whether managerial gambling attitudes are linked with lottery characteristics of target banks (i.e., high skewness, high volatility, and low price). The evidence shows that banking acquisitions are influenced by gambling attitudes rooted …

Towards A Unified Definition Of Supply Chain Management, Edward Sweeney Jul 2011

Towards A Unified Definition Of Supply Chain Management, Edward Sweeney

Articles

A wide range of definitions of supply chain management (SCM) have been developed over the last three decades. The philosophy of SCM is based firmly on a recognition that it is only by working in a more integrated manner that competitive advantage can be maximised. However, for this to become a reality the development of common definitions and understandings between supply chain partners is a critical success factor. The corollary of this is that a lack of definitional consistency and a common understanding is an inhibitor to the successful adoption of SCM thinking in practice. This paper reviews a number …

Outpacing Moore’S Law: Information Technology’S Role As An Enabler, Kevin P. Duffy Jul 2011

Outpacing Moore’S Law: Information Technology’S Role As An Enabler, Kevin P. Duffy

Management Information Systems Faculty Publications

Technology is widely recognized as an enabler of business models. When the Web appeared in the 1990s, businesses redesigned the ways in which they interacted with their customers. They became global, rather than local, and the world represented an expanded customer base. While the Web has become a fact of life since the 1990s, technology has not lost its ability to introduce new ways of enabling organizations to provide and create value for their customers, as new and inventive ways of interacting with customers continue to appear.

Meta-Analysis Of The Impact Of Positive Psychological Capital On Employee Attitudes, Behaviors, And Performance, James B. Avey, Rebecca J. Reichard, Fred Luthans, Ketan H. Mhatre Jul 2011

Meta-Analysis Of The Impact Of Positive Psychological Capital On Employee Attitudes, Behaviors, And Performance, James B. Avey, Rebecca J. Reichard, Fred Luthans, Ketan H. Mhatre

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

The positive core construct of psychological capital (or simply PsyCap), consisting of the psychological resources of hope, efficacy, resilience, and optimism, has recently been demonstrated to be open to human resource development (HRD) and performance management. The research stream on PsyCap has now grown to the point that a quantitative summary analysis of its impact on employee attitudes, behaviors, and especially performance is needed. The present meta-analysis included 51 independent samples (representing a total of N = 12,567 employees) that met the inclusion criteria. The results indicated the expected significant positive relationships between PsyCap and desirable employee attitudes (job satisfaction, …

Accelerated Share Repurchases, Leonce Bargeron, Manoj Kulchania, Shawn Thomas Jul 2011

Accelerated Share Repurchases, Leonce Bargeron, Manoj Kulchania, Shawn Thomas

Finance Faculty Research and Publications

Accelerated share repurchases (ASRs) are credible commitments by firms to repurchase shares immediately. Including an ASR in a repurchase program reduces the flexibility that firms have to alter an announced program in response to subsequent changes in the price and liquidity of its shares, unexpected shocks to cash flow and/or investment, etc. Thus, we investigate whether firms’ decisions to include ASRs in their repurchase programs are associated with factors expected to influence the costs of lost flexibility and the benefits of enhanced credibility and immediacy. We find robust evidence consistent with the costs of lost flexibility and the benefits of …

Exploring Internal And External Supply Chain Linkages: Evidence From The Field, Mark Barratt, Ruth Barratt Jul 2011

Exploring Internal And External Supply Chain Linkages: Evidence From The Field, Mark Barratt, Ruth Barratt

Management Faculty Research and Publications

In their pursuit of improved operational performance, organizations in supply chains have sought to develop external information-based linkages with their customers and vendors. Has this course of action been at the expense of developing similar internal information-based linkages? This research explores the specific roles of internal and external information-based linkages in achieving improved operational performance. Based on a single case study that comprises a supply chain containing twenty-four internal and fourteen external linkages this research develops a series of propositions. We find that the individual internal linkages may be useful for extending externally derived visibility, and for addressing to some …

China's Use Of Cyber Warfare: Espionage Meets Strategic Deterrence, Magnus Hjortdal Jul 2011

China's Use Of Cyber Warfare: Espionage Meets Strategic Deterrence, Magnus Hjortdal

Journal of Strategic Security

This article presents three reasons for states to use cyber warfare and
shows that cyberspace is—and will continue to be—a decisive element in
China's strategy to ascend in the international system. The three reasons
are: deterrence through infiltration of critical infrastructure; militarytechnological
espionage to gain military knowledge; and industrial espionage
to gain economic advantage. China has a greater interest in using
cyberspace offensively than other actors, such as the United States, since
it has more to gain from spying on and deterring the United States than
the other way around. The article also documents China's progress in
cyber warfare and …

Financial Contagion And Market Liquidity: Evidence From The Asian Crisis, Shantaram P. Hegde, Rupendra Paliwal Jul 2011

Financial Contagion And Market Liquidity: Evidence From The Asian Crisis, Shantaram P. Hegde, Rupendra Paliwal

WCBT Faculty Publications

Models of financial crisis and contagion predict that an economic crisis turns into a crisis of market liquidity in the presence of borrowing constraints, information asymmetry and risk aversion. Based on the firm-level data on a sample of exposed and unexposed US stocks to the Asian currency crisis, we find a significant increase (decrease) in the crisis period bid-ask spreads (depth) and their volatilities for both the groups. While our results underscore the imprints of flight to quality, we detect little causal patterns in liquidity innovations. An important implication of our findings, as evidenced by the recent crisis, is that …

Modeling Human Behavior To Anticipate Insider Attacks, Frank L. Greitzer , Ph.D., Ryan E. Hohimer Jul 2011

Modeling Human Behavior To Anticipate Insider Attacks, Frank L. Greitzer , Ph.D., Ryan E. Hohimer

Journal of Strategic Security

The insider threat ranks among the most pressing cyber-security challenges
that threaten government and industry information infrastructures.
To date, no systematic methods have been developed that provide a
complete and effective approach to prevent data leakage, espionage, and
sabotage. Current practice is forensic in nature, relegating to the analyst
the bulk of the responsibility to monitor, analyze, and correlate an overwhelming
amount of data. We describe a predictive modeling framework
that integrates a diverse set of data sources from the cyber domain, as well
as inferred psychological/motivational factors that may underlie malicious
insider exploits. This comprehensive threat assessment approach
provides …

Is There A Link Between Money Illusion And Homeowners' Expectations Of Housing Prices?, Lucy F. Ackert, Bryan K. Church, Narayanan Jayaraman Jul 2011

Is There A Link Between Money Illusion And Homeowners' Expectations Of Housing Prices?, Lucy F. Ackert, Bryan K. Church, Narayanan Jayaraman

Faculty Articles

Money illusion is a behavioral bias in which a person thinks in terms of nominal rather than real values. This article reports homeowners' responses to a survey designed to measure the extent of money illusion as well as homeowners' expectations regarding home valuations. Our survey respondents suffer from money illusion, yet they have reasonable expectations of home prices. Our analysis did not identify any unique individual characteristic that correlates with homeowners' choices and suggests that the relationship between money illusion and mispricing is subtle and multifaceted.

Mitigating A Conflict Paradox: The Struggle Between Tenure And Charisma In Venture Backed Teams, Marty Abbott Jul 2011

Mitigating A Conflict Paradox: The Struggle Between Tenure And Charisma In Venture Backed Teams, Marty Abbott

Student Scholarship

Investors of venture backed firms, seeking to increase knowledge diversity, cognitive conflict, professionalism and charisma within their top management teams (TMTs), tend to accelerate the turnover of executives within these teams, often resulting in multiple cohorts of tenure. Paradoxically, this search for increased professionalism and beneficial cognitive conflict results in heightened affective (or role based) conflict. Past studies have identified an inverse relationship between charisma and affective conflict, on one hand, and a positive relationship between tenure diversity and affective conflict, on the other hand. This study is the first to integrate these two relationships while simultaneously seeking to identify …

Regret Aversion In Reason-Based Choice, Terry Connolly, Jochen Reb Jul 2011

Regret Aversion In Reason-Based Choice, Terry Connolly, Jochen Reb

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This research examines the moderating role of regret aversion in reason-based choice. Earlier research has shown that regret aversion and reason-based choice effects are linked through a common emphasis on decision justification, and that a simple manipulation of regret salience can eliminate the decoy effect, a well-known reason-based choice effect. We show here that the effect of regret salience varies in theory-relevant ways from one reason-based choice effect to another. For effects such as the select/reject and decoy effect, both of which were independently judged to be unreasonable bases for deciding, regret salience eliminated the effect. For the most-important attribute …

Size And Return: A New Perspective, Fangjian Fu, Wei Yang Jul 2011

Size And Return: A New Perspective, Fangjian Fu, Wei Yang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We document robust empirical evidence that, after controlling for idiosyncratic volatility, large stocks earn significantly higher returns than small stocks. Our empirical results indicate that idiosyncratic volatility is positively related to return, but negatively related to size. Hence, failure to control for idiosyncratic volatility generates a downward omitted variable bias and leads to the widely documented negative relation between size and return. We explain the two contrasting size-return relations, with and without the control for idiosyncratic volatility, in a parsimonious equilibrium model that incorporates three empirical regularities: some individual investors are under-diversified; small stocks have higher idiosyncratic volatilities than large …

Linking Compensation And Job Losses During A Recession, Kevin F. Hallock Jul 2011

Linking Compensation And Job Losses During A Recession, Kevin F. Hallock

Economics Faculty Publications

For more than 60 years, no permanent Lincoln Electric employee has been laid off for lack of work. 2010 marked the 10th consecutive year year that the company increased its dividend and stock price gains have fairly consistently outperformed the S&P 500 during the past five years. For most organizations, when costs need to be cut, shedding some workers is part of the solution. Work Sharing Unemployment Insurance tries to mitigate the negative repercussions of layoffs. Under WSUI, workers are eligible for a prorated fraction of unemployment insurance benefits. Proponents of WSUI contend that hiring, firing, and retraining costs are …
