The Gendering Of Organizational Research Methods: Evidence Of Gender Patterns In Qualitative Research [With Commentaries And Response], Donde Ashmos Plowman, Anne D. Smith
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
Purpose — The purpose of this paper is to explore the role that gender plays in choice of research methods.
Design/methodology/approach — The publication patterns of men and women in four prominent management journals over two decades were analyzed in three North American journals—Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, and Organization Science—and one European journal—Journal of Management Studies. The authors coded the research methodology—qualitative or non-qualitative—and author gender for each article from 1986 through 2008, other than Organization Science which began in 1990. The authors also coded the stage of career for the journals …
Mentoring Impact On Leader Efficacy Development: A Field Experiment, Paul B. Lester, Sean T. Hannah, Peter D. Harms, Gretchen R. Vogelgesang, Bruce J. Avolio
Mentoring Impact On Leader Efficacy Development: A Field Experiment, Paul B. Lester, Sean T. Hannah, Peter D. Harms, Gretchen R. Vogelgesang, Bruce J. Avolio
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
While practitioners and scholars tout the importance of mentorship in leader development, few studies have empirically determined whether mentoring actually positively impacts a leader’s development, and if so, in what ways. In a longitudinal field experiment, we examined how a targeted mentorship program that unfolded over 6 months enhanced the development of protégés’ leader efficacy and performance. Results showed that the targeted mentorship intervention increased protégés’ level of leader efficacy more than a comparison intervention that was based on a more eclectic leadership education program delivered in a group setting. Leader efficacy then predicted rated leader performance. Both protégés’ preferences …
Adult Attachment Styles In The Workplace, Peter D. Harms
Adult Attachment Styles In The Workplace, Peter D. Harms
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
Prior research has demonstrated that attachment styles are important antecedents of interpersonal relationship quality and psychological well-being. Despite this, the theory of attachment styles has been largely ignored by researchers interested in workplace phenomena. The present paper aims to explain the theory of attachment styles, why researchers have overlooked attachment styles as an antecedent of organizational behavior, and a possible means of reconciling attachment theory with current models of personality. Moreover, I will review what existing research has actually demonstrated in terms of linking attachment styles to leadership, trust, satisfaction, performance and other outcomes. Finally, I will explore what possible …
Leader Development And The Dark Side Of Personality, Peter D. Harms, Seth M. Spain, Sean T. Hannah
Leader Development And The Dark Side Of Personality, Peter D. Harms, Seth M. Spain, Sean T. Hannah
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
The present study investigates the role of subclinical personality traits as determinants of leader development over time. In previous literature, subclinical traits have been identified as potential causes of leader derailment. However, leader development researchers have argued that developmental interventions based on increasing self-awareness may be effective at mitigating the negative effects of these character flaws. Using a multi-wave, multi-method longitudinal study of military school cadets we evaluate the impact of subclinical traits on externally-rated measures of leader development over a three year period. Results demonstrated that adding subclinical traits to models of development significantly increased model fit and that …
Revealing Darkness Through Light: Communicatively Managing The Dark Side Of Mentoring Relationships In Organisations, Kristen Carr, Erica P. Heiden
Revealing Darkness Through Light: Communicatively Managing The Dark Side Of Mentoring Relationships In Organisations, Kristen Carr, Erica P. Heiden
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
Existing research has indicated that mentoring in organisations serves a variety of beneficial functions, including socialising new employees, increasing employee self-esteem and competence, and teaching them how to navigate organisational politics. Although the benefits of mentoring are clear and well documented, there is a potential ‘dark side’ to mentoring that has the potential to result in role confusion, interpersonal conflict, the loss of individual power, and diluted organisational culture. It is our purpose in this paper to reconceptualise the role of communication in mentoring as a way to illuminate this dark side of mentoring within organisations.
Successful Introduction Of Cloud Computing Into Your Organization: A Six-Step Conceptual Model, Hossein Bidgoli
Successful Introduction Of Cloud Computing Into Your Organization: A Six-Step Conceptual Model, Hossein Bidgoli
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Cloud computing is the fastest area of application within the information systems field. The adoption of cloud computing by businesses, government agencies, and academic institutions is on the rise. Cloud computing platforms could reduce cost, offer scale, and increase information systems responsiveness for those companies that are adopting it properly. However, still many decision makers do not really know what exactly cloud computing is, its unique capabilities, and how it may increase the efficiency and effectiveness of IT services. Also cloud computing may mean different things to different people. This paper first examines different applications within the cloud computing domain …

Speech Corpus Generation From Dvds Of Movies And Tv Series, Veton Z. Kepuska, Pattarapong Rojanasthien
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Speech corpus is a database of audio files containing spoken words/sentences and text transcriptions. In this work we present a data collection system for creating speech corpora from movies and TV series DVDs. Corpus generation from these DVDs is significantly lower- cost solution comparing to conventional way of obtaining a speech corpus. In addition, it also takes a shorter amount of time to collect the data and processes it into a corpus. In order to be able to perform this operation the Data Collection Toolkit is introduced. This toolkit is an application developed using C# .Net Framework 3.5 in Visual …

The Evolution Of Information Systems Offshoring Research: A Past, Present And Future Meta Analysis Review, Peter Haried, Hua Dai
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
This research article presents a past, present and future meta analysis of information systems offshoring (ISO) research over the 2000-2010 time period. ISO has emerged as a significant sourcing strategy adopted by many organizations to manage, support and deliver their information system needs. Across the selected academic articles our findings compare research methodologies applied, client vs. vendor perspectives studied and ISO topic areas investigated. Interesting results emerge in the range and evolution of ISO research. As a result of our analysis, our findings clearly indicate areas of need for future ISO researchers to consider when conducting future ISO research.
The Temporal Dimension Of Electronic Meetings: A Study Of Synchronous And Asynchronous Idea Generation, Mina Park, Milam Aiken
The Temporal Dimension Of Electronic Meetings: A Study Of Synchronous And Asynchronous Idea Generation, Mina Park, Milam Aiken
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Electronic meeting systems can increase the efficiency and effectiveness of group discussions, but relatively little research has investigated use of the technology in asynchronous environments. In this study, five groups of 10 students participated in synchronous legislative sessions and five groups of 10 met in asynchronous settings. Results showed that there were no differences in meeting process satisfaction, production blocking, evaluation apprehension, and total and relevant comments generated, but synchronous groups believed there was more participation and were more satisfied with the comments. Although there could be less feeling of social presence, use of asynchronous, distributed meetings might become more …
Antecedents Of New Director Social Capital, Scott Johnson, Karen Schnatterly, Joel F. Bolton, Chris S. Tuggle
Antecedents Of New Director Social Capital, Scott Johnson, Karen Schnatterly, Joel F. Bolton, Chris S. Tuggle
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
Prior research shows that firms benefit from the social capital of their boards of directors but has not explored the antecedents of new director social capital. We argue that firms can attract directors with social capital by offering more compensation. We also argue that more complex firms (firms with a greater scale and scope of operations) are more attractive to such directors because of the greater experience and exposure that such directorships provide. Similarly, we argue that firms with high-status directors on their current boards will be more attractive to directors with social capital. We analyse the social capital of …
Experimentally Analyzing The Impact Of Leader Positivity On Follower Positivity And Performance, James Avey, Bruce J. Avolio, Fred Luthans
Experimentally Analyzing The Impact Of Leader Positivity On Follower Positivity And Performance, James Avey, Bruce J. Avolio, Fred Luthans
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
This field experimental study examined the role that positive leadership plays in producing effective leader and follower outcomes. Specifically, a sample of engineers (N = 106) from a very large aerospace firm were randomly assigned to four experimental conditions. Two conditions involved assigning these engineers to a low and high problem complexity condition. The other two conditions represented high versus low conveyed leader positivity. The results indicated a positive relationship between the leaders’ positivity and the followers’ positivity and performance, as well as a negative relationship between problem complexity and follower positivity. The study limitations, needed future research, and practical …

The Performance Of Venture Capital Funds And Vc-Backed Ipos: An Evidence From China, Weng Hong Lou
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
This study is divided into three parts based on the listed companies on the Small and Medium Enterprise Board on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in China. The first part is to study the investment performance of Venture Capital Funds. I found that the investment return in terms of investment multiple and annual rate of return is better than those in the US market, and also the VC investment portfolios outperform the public equity market. Furthermore, I compare the performance of non VC-backed IPOs and non VC-backed IPOs by using the Buy-and Hold Abnormal Return and Wealth Relatives. Both measurements show …
Optimal Advertisement Scheduling In Breaks Of Random Lengths, Ajay Srinivasan Aravamudhan
Optimal Advertisement Scheduling In Breaks Of Random Lengths, Ajay Srinivasan Aravamudhan
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Broadcasters generate a large part of their revenue through advertising, especially in live sports. Scheduling advertisements can be challenging in live broadcasting, however, for sports such as Cricket that have breaks of random lengths and number during which the ads are shown. This uncertainty, coupled with the high price of spots for major competitions, means that improving ad scheduling can add significant value to the broadcaster. This problem shares similarities with the stochastic cutting stock problem and the dynamic stochastic knapsack problem, with applications in the wood, steel and paper industry and the transportation industry respectively.
This dissertation adds to …

Purposeful sampling was used to identify …
Examining Perceptions Of Managers And Financial Advisors Of A Mentoring Program On Productivity And Retention, Marston A. Thomas
Examining Perceptions Of Managers And Financial Advisors Of A Mentoring Program On Productivity And Retention, Marston A. Thomas
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Researchers have found that 90% of financial advisors leave the life insurance industry in first year, 68% in the second year, and 50% in the third year. Researchers have noted the importance of mentorship aimed at work attitudes, yet there is a lack of research concerning attrition and its effects on the industry. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine managers' and financial advisors' perception of a mentoring program on advisors productivity and retention. Social learning theory was applied as the theoretical framework for this study. Data were collected from financial advisors and their managers across 13 branch …
Implications Of Executive Succession Upon Financial Risk And Performance, Susan F. Weiss
Implications Of Executive Succession Upon Financial Risk And Performance, Susan F. Weiss
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Executive replacements have historically created fluctuations in the market value of a company and precipitated inappropriate investor reaction. However, the direction and statistical significance of relationships between executive turnover, market value, financial risk, and investor reaction among a census of highly performing firms was previously unexplored. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of the relationship between CEO turnover and indicators of company performance. Theoretical foundation for this study was the efficient markets hypothesis. Hypotheses tests were designed to support an ex-post facto research methodology for pre-post comparison of volatility of financial metrics, which are indicators of …
A Review Of The Department Of The Army's Decentralized Cost Benefit Analysis Process, Gerard M. Acosta
A Review Of The Department Of The Army's Decentralized Cost Benefit Analysis Process, Gerard M. Acosta
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
From 1996 to 2006, the number of Department of Defense (DoD) contract transactions increased, leading to over expenditures and the need for agencies to determine benefit estimation to improve risk management of a project. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to apply a total quality management theory to explore if a standardized versus decentralized benefits framework within the cost benefit analysis process could improve the Department of the Army acquisition selection process. The two central research questions addressed (a) the differences between successful and failed acquisition systems cost benefit analysis, and (b) whether a standardized or decentralized cost …
Factors Affecting The Job Satisfaction Of Registered Nurses Working In The United States, Ann Marie Huffenberger
Factors Affecting The Job Satisfaction Of Registered Nurses Working In The United States, Ann Marie Huffenberger
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
As the health care sector in the United States undergoes transformation, job dissatisfaction has become a problem that is confounded by the challenge that nurse executives encounter in understanding the aspirations of an increasingly diverse workforce. A quantitative survey was conducted online using a representative sample of registered nurses (RNs) nationwide. Approximately 127,000 RNs from across the nation received an invitation, and 272 RNs participated. Factorial ANOVAs were performed to answer the research questions of whether aspects of job satisfaction differ across the demographic factors of a diverse RN workforce. No differences exist in personal satisfaction or satisfaction with workload …
A Mixed Methods Examination Of The Influence Of Dimensions Of Support On Training Transfer, Laura A. Schindler
A Mixed Methods Examination Of The Influence Of Dimensions Of Support On Training Transfer, Laura A. Schindler
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Organizations invest a significant amount of time and money on training; however, most employees do not transfer what they learned in training to the specific tasks required in their job. While extant research suggests that supervisor support may facilitate training transfer, the influence of specific types or dimensions of support is still unknown. The purpose of this mixed methods sequential explanatory study was to examine how specific dimensions of support (mentoring, coaching, social support, and task support) influence training transfer. Organizational support theory and the theory of planned behavior served as the theoretical framework for this study. Quantitative data were …
The Potential Role Of Business Intelligence In Church Organizations, Charmaine Felder
The Potential Role Of Business Intelligence In Church Organizations, Charmaine Felder
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Business intelligence (BI) involves transforming data into actionable information to make better business decisions that may help improve operations. Although businesses have experienced success with BI, how leaders of church organizations might be able to exploit the advantages of BI in church organizations remains largely unexplored. The purpose of the phenomenological study was to explore the perceptions of pastoral leaders concerning the potential usefulness of BI in church organizations. Conceptual support for the study was based on the premise that churches may also benefit from BI that helps improve decision making and organizational performance. Three research questions were used to …

Leadership Styles And Faculty Satisfaction In The State University System Of Florida, Justin Ted Bateh
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Universities must retain satisfied employees to enhance productivity and reduce turnover. Leadership represents one of the fundamental factors in job satisfaction. The purpose of this correlational study was to examine the relationship between perceived academic administrator leadership styles and the satisfaction of faculty members. The independent variables were the transformational, transactional, and passive/avoidant leadership styles of academic administrators as evaluated by faculty members. The dependent variable was job satisfaction of full-time faculty members. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire was used to identify the leadership style of an administrator as perceived by faculty members. Spector's Job Satisfaction Survey was used to assess …
