A Case Study Of International Cooperative Learning Between American And Chinese Students, Suosheng Wang, Kun Lai Ph.D. Jan 2011

A Case Study Of International Cooperative Learning Between American And Chinese Students, Suosheng Wang, Kun Lai Ph.D.

Great Lakes Hospitality & Tourism Educators Conference

International Cooperative Learning (ICL) possesses a big potential in becoming a good solution to higher education’s challenge of “internationalization.” To explore how ICL should be designed, implemented and what challenges and barriers an ICL course may encounter, the researchers from SYSU, Guangzhou, China and IU, Indianapolis, USA researched ICL by incorporating it into the course of ‘Global Tourism Geography’ and bringing their students together into the same distance-learning ‘classroom’. Such a study is needed for the reason that ICL lacks clear conception and practical operationalization, although it possesses great potentials to be an important solution to challenges caused by “internationalization” …

Applying The Dineserv And Ipa Methods To A Cross Cultural Comparison Of Quality Service Gaps, A. Scott Rood, Joanna Dziadkowiec

Great Lakes Hospitality & Tourism Educators Conference

This is an empirical comparison of methods study, to determine which method (DINESERV or Importance Performance Analysis) will produce the most relevant gap analysis attuned to the needs of restaurant managers (hospitality providers) in Poland and the United States. The aims are: 1) to understand what consumers expect (in advance of their purchase) from a casual dining restaurant; 2) to understand what attributes are more or less important to them; 3) to examine aspects of service delivery (post purchase) and identify the service quality gaps; and, 5) to compare the two main methodologies.

Forging Theatre And Community: Challenges And Strategies For Serving Two Missions, Dan L. Balfour Jan 2011

Forging Theatre And Community: Challenges And Strategies For Serving Two Missions, Dan L. Balfour

Peer Reviewed Articles - Public, Nonprofit, and Health Administration

At the age of personal computers, the Internet, cell phones, video games, and I-pods, how can individuals be enticed to emerge from their electronic silos and actually engage others in meaningful discourse as members of a community with common interests and problems? One organizational response to this challenge is the activities of community-based organizations. Such organizations are widely recognized for their ability to promote and facilitate creative face-to-face human interactions that serve as a counterweight to the forces of individuation and declining trust in public institutions, while playing a niche role in the process of building and sustaining community solidarity. …

Fundraising Strategies Of Nonprofit Organizations: Measuring Roi And Success In A Time Of Economic Crisis, Leslie Jablonski, Jeff Beck

Great Lakes Hospitality & Tourism Educators Conference

The question being explored through this research is whether or not there are particular, newly developed, strategies that have aided organizations in continuing to raise funds during difficult economic times. Particularly, the research focuses on the differing events organizations have used in their attempts to raise money. In addition, it explores the existence of connections between the strategies the organizations in different sectors of the industry use to raise money when the public does not have much to give.

Handwashing Behaviors In Food Service Establishment Restrooms: An Observational Study, Jaemin Cha Ph.D., Carl Borchgrevink Ph.D., Seunghyun Kim Ph.D.

Great Lakes Hospitality & Tourism Educators Conference

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identified poor handwashing as a main factor in foodborne illness outbreaks (ServSafe, 2009). They suggested that failure to wash hands, or inadequate washing of hands, contributes to almost 50% of all foodborne illness outbreaks. We conducted an observational study of diners’ handwashing behaviors in restaurant restrooms in terms of gender, handwashing signage, sink cleanliness conditions, and time. Our goal was to explore predictors of proper handwashing behaviors to promote better handwashing compliance.

Consumer Perception Of Boutique Hotel: A Pilot Study, Jellna Chung, Seunghyun Kim Ph.D. Jan 2011

Consumer Perception Of Boutique Hotel: A Pilot Study, Jellna Chung, Seunghyun Kim Ph.D.

Great Lakes Hospitality & Tourism Educators Conference

In most situations, consumers purchase or use built-in products and services; however, it is sometimes necessary to customize products to satisfy consumers’ needs and desires. In the hotel industry, for instance, customers have begun to prefer unique experiences. The newest concept in the hotel market today is the boutique (Hartesvelt, 2006). Boutique hotels are upscale, luxury properties that tend to be smaller than conventional hotels, are frequently located in urban areas or city centers, have historical or other interesting aspects, and individually designed for the delivery of personal service (Lim & Endean, 2008). The primary purpose of this study is …

Using Excel To Teach Hospitality Financial Statement Analysis, George R. Conrade Jan 2011

Using Excel To Teach Hospitality Financial Statement Analysis, George R. Conrade

Great Lakes Hospitality & Tourism Educators Conference

This presentation demonstrated the use of Excel to help individuals understand how to prepare and analyze lodging industry financial statements. It focused on an Excel-based interactive exercise that requires a user to prepare some key lodging industry statements, calculate ratios, and then analyze what the numbers mean. It is this last element that is the most important part of financial statement analysis – users must think about what a line account value or a ratio is telling them. It is from this focus on listening to what a number says about an operation that the exercise derives its name – …

All Institute for Community Inclusion Publications

Policy shifts over the past 20 years have created an agenda for sustained commitment to integrated employment for individuals with disabilities. But despite these clear intentions, unemployment of individuals with disabilities continues to be a major public policy issue. Labor force statistics for December 2010 indicate that 28 percent of working-age adults with disabilities are employed, compared with 70 percent of people without disabilities. Labor force data also indicate that workers with disabilities have experienced significantly higher levels of job loss and hardship during the recession of the late 2000s. For people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), the disparity …

Finding The Right Fit: How Alternative Staffing Affects Worker Outcomes, Françoise Carré, Brandynn Holgate, Helen Levine Jan 2011

Finding The Right Fit: How Alternative Staffing Affects Worker Outcomes, Françoise Carré, Brandynn Holgate, Helen Levine

Center for Social Policy Publications

This report reviews our findings from two and one-half years of monitoring and evaluating the activities of four alternative staffing organizations (ASOs). ASOs are worker-centered, socialpurpose businesses created by community-based organizations and national nonprofits. These fee-for-service organizations use the model of temporary staffing services to help job seekers who face labor market barriers access work experience and potential employers. They place job seekers in temporary and “temp-to-perm” assignments with customer businesses, charging their customers a wage-based markup fee. This field of practice first emerged in the 1970s and grew rapidly in the 1990s; it now includes over 50 ASOs. Alternative …

The Stability Of Offshore Outsourcing Relationships: The Role Of Relation Specificity And Client Control, Stephan Manning, Arie Y. Lewin, Marc Schuerch Jan 2011

The Stability Of Offshore Outsourcing Relationships: The Role Of Relation Specificity And Client Control, Stephan Manning, Arie Y. Lewin, Marc Schuerch

Management and Marketing Faculty Publication Series

Offshore outsourcing of administrative and technical services has become a mainstream business practice. Increasing commoditization of business services and growing client experience with outsourcing have created a range of competitive service delivery options for client firms. Yet, data from the Offshoring Research Network (ORN) suggests that, despite increasing market options and growing client quality and cost efficiency expectations, clients typically renew provider contracts and develop longer-term relationships with providers. Based on ORN data, this paper explores drivers of this phenomenon. The findings suggest that providers promote contract renewal by making client specific investments in software, IT infrastructure and training, and …

Film And Television Production In Massachusetts: The Beginning Of Hollywood East?, Pacey C. Foster, David Terkla Jan 2011

Film And Television Production In Massachusetts: The Beginning Of Hollywood East?, Pacey C. Foster, David Terkla

Economics Faculty Publication Series

After declining in the 1990s (laubacher, 2006), the Massachusetts film and television industry reached a nadir with the closing of the Massachusetts film office in 2002. To revitalize this once-thriving local creative industry, in 2005 the state legislature passed a tax incentive plan that provided a bankable tax credit for qualifying motion picture and television productions in Massachusetts. As updated in 2007, the Massachusetts film tax credit (FTC) provides a refundable/transferrable tax credit for 25% of qualifying wage and non-wage production expenses and a sales tax exemption for qualifying in-state spending. Massachusetts joined, at the maximum, 43 other states in …

The Politics Of Carbon Disclosure As Climate Governance, Janelle Knox-Hayes, David Levy Jan 2011

The Politics Of Carbon Disclosure As Climate Governance, Janelle Knox-Hayes, David Levy

Management and Marketing Faculty Publication Series

The rapid growth in carbon disclosure in recent years represents a major success in the struggle to build awareness and action on climate change. The growth of carbon disclosure is the result of three core drivers: regulatory compliance, pressure from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and managerial information systems intended to facilitate participation in carbon markets, reduce energy costs and manage reputational risks. In this essay, we argue that the strategies pursued by ‘institutional entrepreneurs’ have played a key role in the successful institutionalization of carbon disclosure by bringing together companies, NGOs and government agencies. The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), in particular, …

The Importance Of Being Known: Relationship Banking And Credit Limits, Atreya Chakraborty Jan 2011

The Importance Of Being Known: Relationship Banking And Credit Limits, Atreya Chakraborty

Accounting and Finance Faculty Publication Series

This paper measures the importance of bank-firm relationships in obtaining higher credit “limits.” We use data from a relatively unused section of the National Survey of Small Business Finance (NSSBF, 1993) on credit limits, credit sources, and contract terms for firms with lines of credit from multiple banks. This lets us isolate the credit limit that each bank provides the same firm, eliminating the need to control for often immeasurable, unreliable, or firm-specific “soft” information. For a median Line of Credit (LOC) of $250,000, we find that a bank with a five-year information advantage provides a LOC limit that is …

Isp Thesis, Joseph Michael David

Wayne State University Theses

Abstract

AN INTERDISCIPLINARY PERSPECTIVE ON TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP

By: JOSEPH DAVID

December 2010

Advisor: Dr. Richard Raspa

Degree: Master of Interdisciplinary Studies

Many people in today's world often submit to broad assumptions, generalizations and faulty reasoning in determining what constitutes a competent leader. Qualities such as high energy, positive attitude and charisma are unfortunately the sole traits that elect leaders. While positive thinking does help to produce compelling visions to inspire people, high energy is necessary for leadership given the workload and charisma needed to win people over. These are components for election not successful leadership.

Such narrow sighted values for …

Essays On International Corporate Cash Holdings, Yonghong Jia Jan 2011

Essays On International Corporate Cash Holdings, Yonghong Jia

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation is composed of two distinct chapters. The first chapter is concerned with the secular trends in corporate cash holdings and the determinants of the changing cash policies for seven industrialized countries--Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the US, and UK. In the first chapter, we document that a pronounced secular upward trend in cash holdings is almost systemic across sample countries over 1991-2008, with France exhibiting a modest rise and Japan a substantial decline. However, the driving forces underlying the cash pattern are not uniform across countries. While the evolution in firm characteristics necessitated elevated cash balances, the time-varying …

When Are Super Bowl Advertisings Super? An Empirical Analysis Of The Economic Impact Of Super Bowl Advertising, Jin-Woo Kim

Marketing Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation investigates the relationship between Super Bowl advertising and advertisers' market valuation. The first essay identifies several factors that influence the financial rewards of this media-placement strategy. Specifically, I examine the impact of each ad's featured characters and appeals, and the product benefits promoted, on abnormal stock returns for sponsoring companies that appear in Super Bowl ads. Event study results show that Super Bowl advertising from 2004 to 2008 is positively related to abnormal stock returns for advertisers. Cross-sectional regression analyses indicate that market value of Super Bowl advertisers is positively related to likeable characters, emotional appeals, and approach …

How Firms Learn From The Uses Of Different Types Of Management Control Systems, Michael T. Lee, Sally K. Widener

Accountancy Faculty Publications and Presentations

Many users of management control systems claim that a system’s effectiveness in creating business performance resides in its ability to facilitate learning and decision making. Yet this does not explain why users of management control systems have varying levels of success in terms of business performance with these tools. Our IMA-sponsored research project1 examines the following questions that relate management control system use, learning, and performance:

• How are management control systems used?

• How do organizations learn from management control systems?

• What uses of management control systems and styles of learning characterize high performing firms?

To answer these …

Circus: An Integrated Curriculum Unit, Institute For The Development Of Gifted Education, Ricks Center For Gifted Children, University Of Denver

Ricks Curriculum Units Series

An integrated curriculum is an instructional approach that connects the disciplines to an underlying theme or topic. Immersing students in an integrated-thematic unit provides the backdrop for experiences to occur across the disciplines. Shaping coursework around integrated themes is especially appropriate for gifted students, however using an integrated-thematic curriculum is appropriate for all learners as it develops students' abilities to make connections, to solve problems by looking at multiple perspectives, and to integrate information from different fields of experience. An integrated-thematic curriculum permits students to be active participants in their own learning as they design their own explorations and take …

The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy's Effect On An Auditor's Issuance Of A Gco, Trey M. Stone Jan 2011

The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy's Effect On An Auditor's Issuance Of A Gco, Trey M. Stone

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This paper reports on the effect of a self-fulfilling prophecy on issuing a going concern opinion. A thorough analysis of the academic accounting literature and the popular press is performed to develop a better understanding of the rationales used by auditors in their decision to issue, or not to issue a going concern opinion. Based on the input of an expert panel, a literature review, and other quantitative criteria, the visibility and importance of these rationales is determined. A questionnaire is then developed to measure if the self-fulfilling prophecy has a role in auditors' decision to issue, or not to …
