Development And Evaluation Of An Integrated Simulation Model For Assessing Smallholder Crop-Livestock Production In Yucatán, Mexico, David Parsons, Charles F. Nicholson, Robert W. Blake, Quirine M. Ketterings, Luis Ramírez-Aviles, Danny G. Fox, Luis O. Tedeschi, Jerome H. Cherney

Agribusiness

Mixed farming systems constitute a large proportion of agricultural production in the tropics, and provide multiple benefits for the world’s poor. However, our understanding of the functioning of these systems is limited. Modeling offers the best approach to quantify outcomes from many interacting causal variables in these systems. The objective of this study was to develop an integrated crop–livestock model to assess biophysical and economic consequences of farming practices exhibited in sheep systems of Yucatán state, Mexico. A Vensim™ dynamic stock-flow feedback model was developed to integrate scientific and practical knowledge of management, flock dynamics, sheep production, partitioning of nutrients, …

Earnings Management And Long-Run Stock Underperformance Of Private Placements, Steven D. He, D. Yang, L. Guan Jan 2011

Earnings Management And Long-Run Stock Underperformance Of Private Placements, Steven D. He, D. Yang, L. Guan

Faculty Publications

The study investigates whether private placement issuers manipulate their earnings around the time of issuance and the effect of earnings management on the long-run stock performance. We find that managers of U.S. private placement issuers tend to engage in income-increasing earnings management in the year prior to the issuance of private placements. We further speculate that earnings management serves as a likely source of investor over-optimism at the time of private placements. To support this speculation, we find evidence suggesting that the income-increasing accounting accruals made at the time of private placements predict the post-issue long-term stock underperformance. The study …

Off The Rack Versus Savile Row: The Value Of Custom Tailoring For Equity Investors, Steven D. Dolvin, John Gonas

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

eparately managed accounts (SMAs) generally carry a higher fee structure than standard mutual funds, but managers tout the ability to customize accounts as being worthy of this higher cost. This customization may increase returns, or it may simply allow for more personalized tax management or control over other unique circumstances. • Very little research exists on the relative return benefit of SMAs compared with actively managed mutual funds. We fill this gap by examining firms that offer concurrently managed funds-SMAs as well as matching mutual funds run by the same manager(s) and following the same general strategy. • We find …

Reconciling The Social/Human And Technical/Material In Is Research Without Trying Too Hard, Steven Alter Jan 2011

Reconciling The Social/Human And Technical/Material In Is Research Without Trying Too Hard, Steven Alter

Business Analytics and Information Systems

This contribution to the SIGPHIL workshop on reconciling the social and technical in IS research proposes a sociotechnical approach that addresses many issues related to the long-standing duality of the social/human versus the technical/material. It shows that a sociotechnical approach based on work system concepts 1) highlights and potentially bypasses extremely basic ontological stumbling blocks in IS research, 2) incorporates many of the topics and concerns of the original sociotechnical school, 3) illuminates issues related to the duality of the social/human versus the technical/material, and 4) addresses these topics using concepts and terminology that are much easier to understand than …

Design And Behavioral Science Research In Premier Is Journals: Evidence From Database Management Research, Anteneh Ayanso, Kevin Lertwachara, Francine Vachon

Management, HR and Information Systems

In this article, we examine database management research that has been published in ISR, JMIS, and MISQ from each journal’s inception to 2007. Our goal is to profile database research using a classification scheme that includes research paradigms, IT constructs, and research methodologies. The overall statistics obtained shows that information systems (IS) research in database management, which is widely recognized as part of the core knowledge of IS, is diverse in IT constructs, methodologies, as well as research paradigms. However, we also find that each journal has focused more on one research paradigm and some research methodologies. We summarize and …

Reversing Ethiopia's Intellectual Capital Flight, Asayehgn Desta Jan 2011

Reversing Ethiopia's Intellectual Capital Flight, Asayehgn Desta

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Recently, the Ethiopian Government drafted a five year plan (2010 to 2015) to achieve the country’s economic growth. When Ethiopia’s Growth and Transformation plan was analyzed in light of the new growth theory and traced historically in terms of the push and pull factors that contributed to the flight of skilled Ethiopians to more advanced countries, it was found that over the years Ethiopia has funded the education of its nationals only to see them contributing to the growth of developed countries. Being stripped of skilled human capital, leaving it ill prepared to face globalization and survive in the new …

The Wiki Way: Supporting Collaborative Learning For First Year Students, Kathleen Hughes Jan 2011

The Wiki Way: Supporting Collaborative Learning For First Year Students, Kathleen Hughes

Papers, presentations and other resources

Skills in working in teamwork are demanded from graduates, and these are ever more likely to be over the internet. Horizon (2011) calls for this need to be reflected in students’ project work. The use of Wikis has been posited as a tool for collaborative online knowledge creation, increasing engagement, and social constructivism (Wheeler and Wheeler, 2008). The use of wikis in student groups is still relatively new, however, and the need for deeper investigation of its role in supporting group collaboration has been identified in literature (Bruen et al, in Donnelly, Harvey and O’ Rourke, 2010).

This study utilised …

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

A dramatic shift has stated to take place in the last decade that is having a pronounced impact on how organizations view information security. Large datacenters and small sensor rooms alike are being impacted by the development and growth of virtualization and the many benefits it provides. This essay will examine how hardware virtualization has changed the landscape of datacenter risk management and how organizations must adapt their security posture to those changes. As mainstream hypenisors like VMware ESXi, Citrix XenServer, and Microsoft Hyper-V become more affordable and easier to implement, their use in providing low-cost, high-utilization solutions is steadily …

Consumption Behavior Of Chinese Urban Residents During Economic Transition: Intermittent And Cyclical Fluctuations, Ilan Alon, Xiaotong Jin, Shengliang Deng Jan 2011

Consumption Behavior Of Chinese Urban Residents During Economic Transition: Intermittent And Cyclical Fluctuations, Ilan Alon, Xiaotong Jin, Shengliang Deng

Faculty Publications

Although in recent years researchers have attempted to examine the consumption behavior of Chinese residents during economic transition, there still exists a clear gap in the literature to adequately explain the consumption behavior of Chinese urban residents during economic restructuring. This paper, attempting to shed some light on this relationship, proposes a hypothesis of Chinese urban resident consumption behavior during economic transition in China and examines the hypothesis using quantitative models. The conclusion suggests that the consumption of Chinese urban residents is guided by traditional Chinese civilization, and this results in intermittent and cyclical fluctuations in consumption behavior during systemic …

Earnings Management Among Firms During The Pre-Sec Area: A Benford's Law Analysis, Jeffrey J. Archambault, Marie E. Archambault

Accounting Historians Journal

This paper examines the existence of financial statement manipulation in the U.S. during a time period when many of the current motivations did not exist. The study looks for types of manipulations that would be motivated by the pre-SEC operating environment. To examine this issue, a sample of U.S. firms from the 1915 Moody's Analyses of Investments is divided into industrial firms, railroads, and utilities. The railroad and utility companies faced rate regulation during this time period, providing incentives to manipulate the financial reports so as to maximize the rate received. Industrial firms were not regulated. These companies wanted to …

Veblen's Placebo: Another Historical Perspective On Administrative Evil, Jesse F. Dillard, Linda V. Ruchala Jan 2011

Veblen's Placebo: Another Historical Perspective On Administrative Evil, Jesse F. Dillard, Linda V. Ruchala

Accounting Historians Journal

Thorstein Veblen was a turn of the 20th century American economist concerned with the implications of financial capitalists directing the means of production. Veblen proposed that the rationality of material science as practiced by the production engineers is fundamentally different from the rationality of market capitalism. If this claim is valid, our previous contentions regarding accounting, as a facilitating technology, for administrative evil warrant reconsideration. Veblen's position provides a historical perspective on one dimension of administrative evil that is generally unquestionably accepted, especially within accounting. That is, technology, such as accounting and the related information systems, is amoral, and it …
