Effects Of Perceiver / Target Gender And Social Networking Presence On Web-Based Impression Formation, Timothy R. Hill, Leslie J. Albert, Shailaja Venkatsubramanyan

Faculty Publications, Information Systems & Technology

As the Web has expanded in its use and utility it has fundamentally changed the way in which individuals gather and use information. This paper suggests that those changes give rise to tangible and significant effects in the impressions people form of others using Web-based information. This study explores the impacts of perceiver gender, target gender, and social networking presence on subjects’ perceptions of potential teammates otherwise unknown to them as revealed by ratings they assign based only on search engine results. Experiments reveal differences in how male and female perceivers view others’ social networking activity in general and suggest …

Feedback: Baby Boomer Manager Offends Millennial Trainee, Nanette C. Clinch, A Osland

Faculty Publications, School of Management

Hana Tan, a recently employed college graduate was in the midst of her training program when her manager's manager, a fellow named Eric, humiliated her, in her view, in front of her training group by criticizing her use of a ponytail. She wondered, "Should I quit? Do I have to take this stuff to get ahead? Should I report him?" We discuss the incident in the context of phenomenology, Snyder's self monitoring, Goffman's presentation of self, embeddedness and the role of frank feedback.

Faculty Publications, School of Management

This paper explores the importance of integrating knowledge with quantitative modeling process to improve sales operations in multiple product selling situations in the pharmaceutical industry. A knowledge-based approach is proposed to minimize challenges in detailing multiple products to physicians who are more and more difficult accessing in recent years. The performance of this new approach is compared against the traditional approach via actual implementation by the firm that is sponsoring the research. Results based on three months of implementation indicate that the knowledge-based approach performs significantly better with increasing the number of responsive physicians by 71% and profit by 9%.

Business Models And Performance: Entrepreneurial Aspects In The New York Wine Industry, David Brannon Jan 2011

Business Models And Performance: Entrepreneurial Aspects In The New York Wine Industry, David Brannon

Management - Dissertations

This dissertation is about innovation - the setting is business models. I have defined innovativeness in business models as a novel departure from what others in the same industry are using for their business model design. Utilizing evolutionary theory, I focus upon organizational routines to identify innovation. I explored characteristics within the firm associated with innovativeness in the business model including customer information processes; willingness to pursue experimentation and complexity added to the business model from the addition of non-core products. Inertia in the firm was considered as a moderator between each of these variables and innovativeness. Performance was measured …

Employees at hospitality establishments and students at hospitality programs have been found to engage in heavy drinking. Excessive alcohol consumption has been linked to serious illness, cognitive difficulties, risky behaviors and sexual dysfunction. High levels of alcohol consumption, high rates of liver cirrhosis, elevated risk of alcohol-associated cancer and high prevalence of alcoholism have been found among restaurant employees. Research has started to explore some of the antecedent conditions and influences that may lead to high levels of alcohol consumption. Initial findings suggest …

2010 M&A Update, Carol M. Sanchez, Christina Seeber, Stephen R. Goldberg

Peer Reviewed Articles

Most of 2009 was slow for mergers and acquisitions (M&A), due to financial turmoil and economic uncertainty that carried over from late 2008. But the deal market rebounded in the fourth quarter of 2009 and 2010 appears to be much better for M&A than 2009. Yet while the global economy shows signs of recovery, and many buyers and sellers are flush with cash, M&A activity may begin slowly in the United States in 2011 due to uncertainty about the business outlook and potential tax changes. In this article, we briefly review M&A activity in the first half of 2010, and …

We found that the 1.2 bankfull requirements in LD 1725 would result in a 75% ‐ 250% increase in structure widths for stream crossing projects across the state. An upsize of this magnitude would increase the cost of replacing stream crossings statewide by …

Relationship-Based Persuasion: A Guide For The Cpa, Maryanne Atkinson, James H. Thompson

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

An issue faced by a CPA on a regular basis is how to persuade a client to take a recommended action. Maybe your client is unprepared financially for the future and needs to establish a retirement account. As much as your client understands the importance of planning for retirement, the allure of a new car or a kitchen renovation may be too great, and that sensible alternative you are recommending may be ignored until some uncertain future date. Or, maybe the client’s internal controls are inadequate. For many small businesses, where trust in employees is paramount, internal controls may be …

Effects Of Global Trade Liberalisation On Forestry Products And Forest Sustainability Using The Gtap Model, Luz C. Stenberg, Mahinda Siriwardana Jan 2011

Effects Of Global Trade Liberalisation On Forestry Products And Forest Sustainability Using The Gtap Model, Luz C. Stenberg, Mahinda Siriwardana

Business Conference Papers

The paper analyses the effects of trade liberalization amongst the leading exporters and importers of forest products, in particular, as well as global merchandise, in general. The study utilises the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) model and its database, version 7. Given that forest products only comprise a small proportion of world merchandise trade, it is expected that trade liberalisation would cause small changes in terms of trade, real GDP, production, consumption and prices of forest products in most countries. In the short-run, national welfare in China and Japan would increase substantially by more than $US400 million while the opposite …
