The peculiar nature of the US Federal Constitution impinges on the implementation of any federal legislation. The tenth amendment to the US Constitution lays down that powers "not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the States respectively...." What this amendment means is that political authority is vested in the states unless preempted by the federal government. The most obvious example of federal pre-emption is that of equal rights legislation for African Americans. Such federal action has traditionally come about as a result of the perceived failure of states …

Regionalism, Trade Liberalization And Imperfect Markets, Manabendra Dasgupta, Seung Dong Lee Jan 2011

Regionalism, Trade Liberalization And Imperfect Markets, Manabendra Dasgupta, Seung Dong Lee

Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics

We use a three country – one good Cournot oligopoly model to investigate feasibility of free trade areas (FTAs) between two of the three countries. Using a linear demand, constant marginal cost and a welfare function which is a sum of consumers’ surplus (CS), profits and tariff revenues (TR), we derive optimum tariff before and after an FTA is formed. We show that although tariffs imposed by FTA members are lower than pre FTA tariffs, the optimum tariff imposed by the non-member remains unchanged. We also show that an FTA will be supported by member countries if gain in CS …

Alerting Students To The Dangers Of Misstating Equations In The Reciprocal Method Of Cost Allocation, Timothy B. Forsyth, William B. Pollard Jan 2011

Alerting Students To The Dangers Of Misstating Equations In The Reciprocal Method Of Cost Allocation, Timothy B. Forsyth, William B. Pollard

Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics

Cost accounting courses usually cover the direct, step-down and reciprocal (or simultaneous) techniques for cost allocation. In today’s technologically-oriented environment, it is often too tempting to leave the most difficult calculations to the computer. While this computer-default mode can pose little risk for many business calculations, this is not true for calculations involving the reciprocal cost allocation method. Students need to be alerted about the care that should be taken to ensure that the correct cost relationships are captured when the cost equations are specified. Once correctly specified, the equations can then be solved by computer, if desired. In this …

Managing Complexity In Modern Farming, Ross Kingwell Jan 2011

Managing Complexity In Modern Farming, Ross Kingwell

Natural Resources Research Articles

Modern farming in Australia is no longer simple. Farms are large, multi-enterprise businesses underpinned by expensive capital investments, changing production technologies, volatile markets and social challenges. The complexity of modern broadacre farming leads to the question: what is the nature of the relationship between farm business complexity and farm profitability? This study uses bioeconomic farm modelling and employs eight measures of complexity to examine the profitability and complexity of a wide range of broadacre farming systems in Australia. Rank order correlations between farm profitability and each measure of complexity show inconsistent relationships, although the most profitable farming systems are found …

Market Reaction And Structural Risk Shifts Of Financial Services Firms: The Sarbanes-Oxley Act Of 2002, David C. Marlett, Harry M. Davis, Terrill R. Kessler

Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics

This paper examines the market reaction of financial services firms to Sarbanes Oxley legislation. We test for the presence of financial services sector related abnormal returns in the event window surrounding Sarbanes Oxley legislation. In addition, we test for a shift in systematic risk in the period following the imminent passage of Sarbanes Oxley. We use event study methodology to determine if financial sector firms experience abnormal returns at various dates associated with the passage of the legislation. We find that some financial services sectors have significant positive abnormal returns and find that one financial services sector, brokerage firms, has …

Religious Preferences, Church Attendance And Life Satisfaction Among Immigrants In Usa, Kinfu Adisu, Claudia Smith Kelly, Blen Solomon

Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics

In the growing literature on church attendance, little attention has been given to the impact on satisfaction with life among immigrants. Using The Pilot for the New Immigrant Survey (NIS-P), a nationally representative sample of new legal immigrants to the United States (U.S.), this paper empirically investigates the connection between religious involvement and the degree of satisfaction with life among immigrants. First, we examine whether immigrants from different religious affiliations differ in their reported degree of satisfaction with life. We then investigate the impact of regular religious service attendance on their degree of satisfaction with life in the U.S. Our …

2011 Private Capital Markets Report, John K. Paglia

Pepperdine Private Capital Markets Report

The Pepperdine private cost of capital survey was originally launched in 2007 and is the first comprehensive and simultaneous investigation of the major private capital market segments. This year’s survey specifically examined the behavior of senior lenders, asset‐based lenders, mezzanine funds, private equity groups, venture capital firms, angel investors, privately‐held businesses, investment bankers, business brokers, limited partners, and business appraisers. The Pepperdine survey investigated, for each private capital market segment, the important benchmarks that must be met in order to qualify for capital, how much capital is typically accessible, what the required returns are for extending capital in today’s economic …

Understanding The Moral Decision-Making Processes Of Working Professionals, Bruce T. Teague, George W. Watson

Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics

This article builds upon a long standing interest on the part of business ethics scholars regarding the nature of moral reasoning and the linkages between cognitive development and ethical decision-making. In this study, we attempt to eliminate ambiguity in earlier results while also exploring the importance of moral hypocrisy as an organizational issue. Using a sample of working professionals, we extend the generalizability of prior results beyond freshman psychology students. Additionally, we conclude that earlier results were not an artifact of cognitive neurological immaturity.

Globalization: History Repeats (Chapter 1 From Distributed Team Collaboration In Organizations: Emerging Tools And Practices), Tim Rahschulte, Russ Martinelli, Russ Waddell

Faculty Publications - College of Business

The strategy to improve business results through globalization has become increasingly common. Success in reaping the business value intended from a globalization strategy is, unfortunately, not as common. As national boundaries blur and everyone grows more connected through global collaboration, the dynamics of organizational life grow more complex. These complexities offer challenge, confusion, and frustration – but also great opportunity! The key to achieving improved business results does not hinge on strategies alone, but also on our ability to effectively lead global product and service development teams to successfully execute the strategies. Those struggling the most are the practitioners who …

Workplace Learning: Organizations, Ethics, And Issues, Craig E. Johnson Jan 2011

Workplace Learning: Organizations, Ethics, And Issues, Craig E. Johnson

Faculty Publications - College of Business

The rhetoric surrounding workplace learning is overwhelmingly positive. Boud and Garrick (1999) declare, for example: “Learning at work has become one of the most exciting areas of development in the dual fields of management and education” (p. 1). Advocates promise that education on the job will promote economic prosperity, empower workers, foster collaboration, encourage lifelong learning, and reduce the need for organizational hierarchy (Fenwick, 1998). Government policy makers, human resource professionals, college administrators and faculty, employees, union officials, and executives all support corporate learning. Even the term “workplace learning” has positive connotations. This phrase makes older terms like “vocational education” …

Efficiency Of The Welfare State: A Comparative Approach Using Data Envelopment Analysis, Jekabs Bikis Jan 2011

Efficiency Of The Welfare State: A Comparative Approach Using Data Envelopment Analysis, Jekabs Bikis

Faculty Publications - College of Business

As governments continue to evolve over the past century or so in their perceived role of providing economic security for their populations, a ubiquitous yet ill-defined concept of the welfare state is increasingly taking center stage in political and economic debates. With fiscal crises looming over the horizon in many parts of the world, the fingers of blame point with greater frequency to the welfare state as the entity which is contributing more to fiscal problems than to economic solutions. Reformation of the welfare state is rapidly becoming more likely and more urgent and this study proposes one mechanism for …

Building Dependability And Benevolence Trust To Achieve Flexibility Through Joint Manufacturing Activities In Supply Chain, Kun Liao, Xiaodong Deng Jan 2011

Building Dependability And Benevolence Trust To Achieve Flexibility Through Joint Manufacturing Activities In Supply Chain, Kun Liao, Xiaodong Deng

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

Based on the transaction cost theory, this study proposes a research model that links trust, joint manufacturing activities, and supplier flexibility. In this model, supplier dependability trust and financial alignment are viewed as the key drivers of joint manufacturing activities between manufacturers and suppliers. These joint manufacturing activities, in turn, improve the supplier‟s ability to achieve manufacturing flexibility. Based on 208 responses from the suppliers in the U.S. and China, this study provides empirical evidences to suggest that supplier dependability trust and financial alignment positively promote manufacturer-supplier joint manufacturing activities. The results also suggest that the joint manufacturing activities enhance …

The Relationship Of Integration And Automation Under An Uncertain Environment: A Sem Model, Qiang Tu, Kun Liao, Yulong Li Jan 2011

The Relationship Of Integration And Automation Under An Uncertain Environment: A Sem Model, Qiang Tu, Kun Liao, Yulong Li

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

Under a uncertain environment (i.e., growing global competition, changing customer demand, shorter product life cycles, and increasing market diversity), two manufacturing strategies often emerge: manufacturing technology automation and manufacturing system integration. Existing case studies indicate that firms should adapt manufacturing integration first and then automate the manufacturing system to improve manufacturing performance. Using 288 responses from manufacturing managers, the findings of this study empirically supports this proposition. Analytical results also show that the combination strategies of manufacturing system integration followed by manufacturing technology automation have more than twice the effect on manufacturing performance than using manufacturing automation strategy alone.

An Empirical Assessment Of Stimulus Presentation Mode Bias In Conjoint Analysis, Debi P. Mishra, Junhong Min, M. Deniz Dalman

College of Business Publications

Conjoint analysis, which aims to uncover the optimal combination of attributes influencing customer choice, is widely used by marketers to predict the success of new product and service introductions. In recent years, researchers have incorporated considerable mathematical sophistication into conjoint models and extended its domain to diverse areas such as pricing, market share, profitability, product positioning, distribution channels, and advertising. Despite these advances, the predictive power of conjoint applications is often compromised by response biases and measurement errors. The purpose of this research is to isolate and investigate the impact of one such bias that arises from the manner in …
