Examination Timetabling With Mathematical Programming An Application In Turkish Air Force Academy, Emrah Koksalmis

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The focus of this thesis is the educational timetabling problem, which is a very challenging problem to solve especially with a high number of the departments, branches, classes, and students. Due to the large scale of educational timetabling problems and preferences of the stakeholders, it is almost impossible to form a general model that solves all of the timetabling problems in the literature. This resulted in the need to develop and employ specific models for specific institutions.

The purpose of this study is to develop a mathematical programming model that solves the examination timetabling problem in Turkish Air Force Academy …

The Effect Of Cultural Intelligence On Employee Performance In International Hospitality Industries: A Case From The Hotel Sector In Egypt, Hadia Fakhreldin

Business Administration

This study highlights the importance of cultural intelligence in international business. Employees with high levels of cultural intelligence (CI) achieve high performance levels, therefore CI should be a screening criteria and a training goal within multinational companies. A five stars hotel is chosen as the field for testing/examining the theoretical framework identified in the literature. The cultural intelligence level of employees in this hotel is first determined through a questionnaire technique using a valid and reliable test (the Cultural Quotient Scale). Then the performance of these employees is identified through examining selected criteria in their performance review. To verify the …

Has The Time For Large Gaming Property Involved Reits Finally Arrived?: A Review Of The Potential For Reit Investment In Destination Gaming Resort Properties, Simon Johnson Apr 2011

Has The Time For Large Gaming Property Involved Reits Finally Arrived?: A Review Of The Potential For Reit Investment In Destination Gaming Resort Properties, Simon Johnson

UNLV Gaming Law Journal

Destination gaming resorts demand massive amounts of capital in order to fund their investment in real property, much of which comprises areas where they realize predominantly passive business, including the hotel tower. Consequently, they generate substantial income from passive business, such as fees for hotel occupancy, even as most of their income is attributable to active business, such as gaming and personal services. Because they blend separable passive and active real property, a REIT can theoretically acquire all or some of the real property, realizing income under an operator lease with a substantially unrelated gaming or hotel lessee. Alternatively, a …

Can A State Seize An Internet Gambling Website's Domain Name? An Analysis Of The Kentucky Case, Kirk D. Homeyer Apr 2011

Can A State Seize An Internet Gambling Website's Domain Name? An Analysis Of The Kentucky Case, Kirk D. Homeyer

UNLV Gaming Law Journal

The newly developed Internet gambling forum has produced myriad legal issues affecting state, federal, and international law. The difficulty in addressing the issues arises from the ubiquity of the Internet. Based on an analysis of the Kentucky Case, this Note argues that a state cannot seize an Internet gambling website’s domain name for violating that state’s laws. First, Kentucky did not have personal jurisdiction over the gambling domain names’ registrars to have authority to seize them. Second, Kentucky’s gambling statute violates the Commerce Clause. Part II provides background to and the facts underlying the Kentucky Case and its procedural …

With the economy still recovering from the aftermath of the “Great Recession”, there are talks about job creation and consumer spending all over Massachusetts. Currently, the three most critical players in the government of Massachusetts - Governor Deval Patrick, House Speaker Robert DeLeo, …

“E-Commerce Institutionalization Is Not For Us”: Smes Perception Of E-Commerce In Tanzania, Salah Kabanda Apr 2011

“E-Commerce Institutionalization Is Not For Us”: Smes Perception Of E-Commerce In Tanzania, Salah Kabanda

The African Journal of Information Systems

E-Commerce in least developing countries (LDCs) is believed to be non-existent because few businesses, especially Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) who are usually the vanguard of the LDCs economy, have adopted E-Commerce and even those that have, none have institutionalized the technology. Using structuration theory as a lens, this study attempts to provide an explanation as to what E-Commerce means to SMEs with the purpose of unraveling the underlying cause for the lack of E-Commerce institutionalization in LDC - Tanzania. Results indicate that SMEs use their social context to create symbolic interpretive schemes that facilitate their shared understanding of E-Commerce. …

Predicting Consumers’ Ethical Behaviors Through Attitudes Toward Behavior And Prior Behavior, Rajendar K. Garg, Uday S. Tate, Suneel K. Maheshwari Apr 2011

Predicting Consumers’ Ethical Behaviors Through Attitudes Toward Behavior And Prior Behavior, Rajendar K. Garg, Uday S. Tate, Suneel K. Maheshwari

Management Faculty Research

While the concerns for ethical issues relating to consumers have dramatically increased over the last decade, research investigating predictors of these behaviors has been sparse. This paper addresses the attitudinal, personal and cultural factors that predict a large majority of unethical behavioral practices of consumers. An empirical survey was conducted of consumers. The results show that consumer beliefs/values concerning the specific behaviors and their own past behaviors large predict the future behaviors. Consumers' personal factors such as age, sex, nationality, individualism, etc. did not influence their ethical judgments and behaviors at all in this study of working adults.

Not Out Of The (Fox)Woods Yet: Indian Gaming And The Bankruptcy Code, Emir Aly Crowne, Andrew Black, S. Alex Constantin Apr 2011

Not Out Of The (Fox)Woods Yet: Indian Gaming And The Bankruptcy Code, Emir Aly Crowne, Andrew Black, S. Alex Constantin

UNLV Gaming Law Journal

The recent economic downturn has caused Foxwoods Resort Casino, one of the largest casinos in the world, to seek a restructuring of nearly $1.5 billion in debt. Ordinarily, bankruptcy proceedings are triggered when a typical commercial enterprise defaults on its debt. Under these proceedings, creditors step in and collect monies owed to them before any residual equity is dispersed amongst owners. The rub here is that Foxwoods is owned and operated by the Mashantucket Western Pequot Tribal Nation, a sovereign nation under U.S. federal law. This triggers questions of paramountcy; namely, whether tribunal sovereignty can trump federal bankruptcy law.

These …

Identifying Traffic Count Posts For Origin-Destination Matrix Adjustments: An Approach To Actual Size Networks, Saeed Asadi Bagolee, Mohsen Asadi, Lorna Richardson Apr 2011

Identifying Traffic Count Posts For Origin-Destination Matrix Adjustments: An Approach To Actual Size Networks, Saeed Asadi Bagolee, Mohsen Asadi, Lorna Richardson

Journal of Transportation Management

For transportation planners, the use of Origin-Destination (OD) matrix adjustment, is receiving considerable attention. However, there are concerns about the validity of results, primarily related to the number and location of traffic count posts. This leads to the question “What would be the best set of traffic count posts to use in OD matrix adjustment modules?” It has been proved that solving this problem is cumbersome. There have been several attempts (either exact or heuristic approaches) to address this problem. But due to the inherent complexities, there is no efficient and easy-to-use methodology able to address situations on the scale …

The Selection Of Transshipment Ports Using A Hybrid Data Envelopment Analysis/Analytic Hierarchy Process, Byung-In Park, Hokey Min Apr 2011

The Selection Of Transshipment Ports Using A Hybrid Data Envelopment Analysis/Analytic Hierarchy Process, Byung-In Park, Hokey Min

Journal of Transportation Management

The accelerated globalization of logistics activities over the last several decades has spurred a rapid expansion of port facilities all cross the world. However, the recent slowdown of international trade, coupled with a global financial crisis, has created an on-going glut of international port facilities throughout the world. Although the abundance of port facilities provides more transshipment options for carriers and shippers, it makes the port selection decision more complex and difficult. To cope with this new set of challenges, this paper proposes a hybrid data envelopment analysis (DEA)/ analytic hierarchy process (AHP) model that is designed to identify factors …

The Effects Of Potential And Realized Knowledge Sharing In Bioscience Clusters, Francisco Montalvo Apr 2011

The Effects Of Potential And Realized Knowledge Sharing In Bioscience Clusters, Francisco Montalvo

Student Scholarship

This paper examines the nature, evolution, and effects of potential and realized economic and industrial knowledge sharing through the comparison and contrast of two bioscience industrial regional clusters at different stages of development. The paper draws conclusions on research related to effects of knowledge spillover, regional innovation systems, knowledge management, and social network theory. Building on previous qualitative research, we argue that knowledge absorption and spillovers comprise a critical factor in the evolution of specialized knowledge in regional industrial clusters in biotech industries. Although bioscience industrial clusters have been widely researched in the last decade, the nature of knowledge creation …

Under The Shade Of The Plane Tree: Examining Postures And Interdependent Relationships In Highly Regulated Government-Funded Programs, Marilyn A. Hosea Apr 2011

Under The Shade Of The Plane Tree: Examining Postures And Interdependent Relationships In Highly Regulated Government-Funded Programs, Marilyn A. Hosea

Student Scholarship

As government regulations and penalties for non-compliance increase, highly regulated, government funded programs (HRGFPs) are pressed to meet regulatory compliance demands that are perceived to override agency and consumer needs. This research builds upon classic theoretical studies to reconceptualize how power dependence and resource dependence impact government-agency interactions, relations and program effectiveness. Survey results from a national sample of federally funded Head Start organizations suggest: (1) agency/government co- rather than inter-dependency; (2) compliant rather than innovative agency behavior, and (3) age, auspice and funding levels effects on agency/government relations.

Explaining The Alumni Relationship And Giving Tendencies Of Multigeneration Alumni Legacy Families At Marquette University, Lauren Edmonson

Professional Projects

This research examines the donative relationship legacy alumni of Marquette University have with their alma mater. As universities are relying more heavily on donations to finance portions of their budgets, university administration has invested heavily in fundraising offices to identify alumni with strong giving potential. Legacy alumni are a deeply emotionally vested group, with a high giving potential. Previous research has focused on the different determinants of alumni giving; this research focuses specifically on the different generations of legacy families at Marquette (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th) and how their donative nature differs from non‐legacy constituents and from each other. Also …

Self, Social, Team, And Situational Factors Influencing Televised Sports Viewership, Donghun Lee, James Zhang, Ketra L. Armstrong, Soon Ho Kim

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

This study examined personal, social, and team motives associated with the consumption of televised sports (CTS) while taking into consideration market constraints variables. Research participants (N = 304) were university students who responded to a questionnaire that consisted of four segments: (a) watching televised sports, (b) motives for watching televised sports, (c) situational constraints, and (d) demographics. Semi-structured interviews as an ad hoc study were conducted with additional 22 frequent viewers of televised sports to ensure inclusion of all relevant factors affecting CTS. Multiple regression analyses revealed that self, team, and social motives were significant factors (p < .05) related to CTS. Two situational factors (weather and ticket availability) were found to have a significant (p < .01) impact on the CTS. Findings from the interviews further revealed that four conceptual themes affected CTS: individual-related factors, team-related factors, event-related factors, and media features.

Factors That Influence Prices For Cool-Climate Wines: A Hedonic Analysis Of The Market For Riesling, Christiane Schroeter, Jennifer L. Ritchie, Bradley J. Rickard Apr 2011

Factors That Influence Prices For Cool-Climate Wines: A Hedonic Analysis Of The Market For Riesling, Christiane Schroeter, Jennifer L. Ritchie, Bradley J. Rickard

Agribusiness

The price of wine represents various characteristics that differentiate each bottle, assuming that the majority of consumers use price as a signal of quality. The objective of this study is to analyze the drivers of Riesling prices, since this varietal continues to gain popularity and can be grown in all climates, including cool-climate regions. We expand the use of quality ratings by including interaction terms to express wine-quality and price-quality relationships. The results suggest that higher price premiums are associated with wines that earned high expert rating scores, and this emphasizes the importance of market-perceived quality signals.

On The Origins Of Advance Fee Fraud Electronic Mails: A Technical Investigation Using Internet Protocol Address Tracers, Olumide Longe, Adenike Osofisan

The African Journal of Information Systems

One issue that is concerning to the web security community is the correct identification of the origins of advance fee fraud mails. This has serious implications for directing concerted efforts towards mitigating the malaise in the right direction. Although previous research (Cuckier et al, 2007, Gbenga, 2007; Igwe, 2007; Progame, 2007) opined that these mails originate mainly from Nigeria and other West African Countries, research is warranted using available tracking tools to validate previously held notions about the issue of advance fee e-fraud mails. We harvested in real-time aggregated advance fraud e-mails over a two year period using the sinkhole …

Political Science Theses and Capstones

Since 1998 the State of Minnesota has funded the building of the Xcel Energy Center, Target Field, and TCF Bank Stadium. The focus of this research is to locate voting trends within the Minnesota House of Representatives towards these venues. I recorded the votes of each member on the legislation approving these venues from the Minnesota Journal of the House and then constructed data sets for all three buildings. From this data, trends emerge potentially linking the voting tendencies of members based on party, gender, and geographical location of their district. Initial analysis supports a fairly strong relationship between district …

The Corporate Choice Between Public Debt, Bank Loans, Traditional Private Debt Placements, And 144a Debt Issues, Matteo P. Arena

Finance Faculty Research and Publications

The main purpose of this study is to examine the determinants of the corporate choice between different forms of debt financing. By analyzing the most comprehensive sample of U.S. corporate debt issues to date, I find that firms that issue 144A debt have significantly lower credit quality and higher information asymmetry than firms that issue traditional non-bank private debt. Further, the study shows that traditional private placements, rather than bank loans, are the favorite private debt source for firms with good credit quality. I also show that the firm characteristics of traditional private debt issuers have significantly changed after 1990 …
