The Importance Of Intelligence In Combating A Modern Insurgency, Kevin Reamer May 2009

The Importance Of Intelligence In Combating A Modern Insurgency, Kevin Reamer

Journal of Strategic Security

Throughout history the world has been plagued by insurgencies. While the underlying causes of each new insurgency have been different, they are all similar in certain areas. This similarity entails that the effective countering of an insurgency can be turned into a science with a set of guidelines to follow based on conditions on the ground. Guidelines are important because insurgencies are flexible and to defeat them the counterinsurgency must be equally flexible if not more flexible. Good intelligence is critical to the success of an insurgency. With their small, poorly equipped forces, the leaders of insurgencies need to know …

Microfinance In Asia: Not So Risky, Not So Micro, Knowledge@Smu May 2009

Microfinance In Asia: Not So Risky, Not So Micro, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Microfinance is proving to be a successful way to help the rural poor and disadvantaged improve their economic conditions by running their own businesses. However, the current economic crisis has reduced funding available for this pool. But with a proven strong credit history and improvements in technology, microfinancing is now seen as more than just as a nice social obligation. In the words of Nhan Phan Cu, a speaker at a recent seminar on this issue, microfinance in Asia is less risky than investment banking. However, the economic outlook poses some challenges.

Marketing And Democracy: Similarities And Remedies, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Marketing and democracy, two key concepts in the different fields of business and politics, share various traits. Political campaigns, like the landmark victory scored by Barack Obama, were increasingly run in a way that will make most marketing professionals proud. For the better or worse, both concepts have been criticised variously for what they are. Nevertheless, the two can learn and benefit from each other, says Harvard business administration professor John Quelch.

Marketing To Customer Networks: The New Way To Build Your Brand, Knowledge@Smu May 2009

Marketing To Customer Networks: The New Way To Build Your Brand, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Digital technologies connect consumers, and as such, customers function not only as individuals but within customer networks. Negative and positive brand experiences can easily be broadcast across customer networks to powerful effect. This significant shift in the producer-consumer dynamic requires businesses to think and act differently. However, according to David Rogers, a speaker at the BRITE Asia ’09 conference, hosted by SMU, many businesses continue to view customer networks as threats rather than opportunities.

Managing Joint Ventures, Paul W. Beamish, Nathaniel C. Lupton May 2009

Managing Joint Ventures, Paul W. Beamish, Nathaniel C. Lupton

Faculty Publications

Joint ventures aid firms in accessing new markets, knowledge, capabilities, and other resources. Yet they can be challenging to manage, largely because they are owned by two or more parent companies. These companies may have competing or incongruent goals, differences in management style, and in the case of international business, additional complexities associated with differing government policies and business practices. We examine research on joint venture (JV) performance in order to identify prominent academic discussions established over the last 25 years. From this research, we draw implications from past research and areas for future research on successfully managing JVs, taking …

The Global Economy, In A Downturn; Corporate Social Responsibility, At The Crossroads, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

While plenty of misconception still exists, the concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) has been gaining traction, and many companies, especially the larger corporations, have been implementing their own programmes in this field. Just as when a growing number of companies are treating CSR as an integral part of what they do, the economic crisis struck, threatening to derail many of these fledging efforts. Going forward, CSR needs to be seen as more than just philanthropic activities if they are to continue in a meaningful way, says CSR expert Peter Shergold.

An Investigation Of A Methodology To Assess District Performance, Peter Simpson, Robert K. Gable, Stacey L. Kite May 2009

An Investigation Of A Methodology To Assess District Performance, Peter Simpson, Robert K. Gable, Stacey L. Kite

School Finance and Student Achievement

This study investigates a resource-based methodology to assess district performance as an indicator of student achievement on standardized assessments. The problem that this investigation addresses is that performance measurement and the associated decision-making is indeterminate. There is a lack of empirical research that relates decision-making about resource utilization to performance.

The study utilizes structuralism to assess the relationship between the independent variable of resource utilization and the dependent variable performance. Complex Adaptive System theory is used as a framework for Concept Mapping methodology. The study is grounded in theories from Complex Adaptive Systems and Microeconomics that state that performance is …

Overcoming the challenges and capturing the opportunities can allow Singapore to increase the automation of the …

This study examined the impact of Westernization on Tongan cultural values (Collectivism I, Collectivism II, Power Distance, Future Orientation, and Uncertainty Avoidance) related to business. A Tongan version of the Project GLOBE Beta Questionnaire measuring cultural dimensions at the societal level was completed by 222 Tongans from the island groups of Vava’u, Ha’apai, and Niuatoputapu. Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The research aimed to determine whether an association exists between perception of financial strain and involvement in campus clubs and organizations, actual finances, and involvement in clubs and organizations, and the levels of social capital generated by involvement in campus clubs and organizations. Results indicate that the perception of financial strain has no significant effect on involvement in campus clubs and activities. The analysis also reveals that actual finances have an insignificant relationship with involvement in campus clubs and organizations. There were significant relationships revealed when social capital was measured. The research …

An Examination Of Accounting Education In Mexico And The United States, Jaime Eastman

Senior Honors Projects

In order to gain a better understanding of accounting education in Mexico and the United States, this study examines how differences in the countries’ business culture, economic history and financial market structure affect accounting education at the university level. A literature review was first conducted of each country’s economic history, business culture, and capital markets. This review then served as the basis for the construction of an interview questionnaire which concerned how differences in the countries’ business environments affect accounting education. There were three primary purposes of this study. First, the study sought to increase the knowledge base of motivations that females hold for assuming the school superintendency while simultaneously comparing and contrasting results with male counterparts. Second, the study analyzed the degree to which motivations for assuming the superintendency were realized once the female assumes the position. Is Something Missing From Your Company's Satisfaction Package?, Deborah S. Archambeault, Richard Burgess, Stan Davis

Accounting Faculty Publications

Conventional wisdom suggests that salary, benefits, and other monetary factors are important aspects of keeping employees satisfied. But which factors have the biggest impact on overall satisfaction? While companies focus on the monetary factors, there are other components of the overall “satisfaction package,” that are just as important, yet often overlooked.

It comes as no surprise that satisfied employees are important to the success of any organization. In short, higher satisfaction increases productivity, improves service levels, and positively impacts a company’s bottom line. While keeping employees satisfied should be an important goal for any organization, a recent job satisfaction survey …

The Nomination And Motivations Of Irish Non-Executive Directors Of Listed Companies, Anna Egan, Rebecca Maughan, Joseph Coughlan May 2009

The Nomination And Motivations Of Irish Non-Executive Directors Of Listed Companies, Anna Egan, Rebecca Maughan, Joseph Coughlan

Conference papers

This paper reports the preliminary findings of an empirical investigation into the process of appointing non-executive directors and their motivations behind the adoption of the position. While research into the board of directors has been extensive, little deliberation has been given to the motives of non-executives who choose to sit on boards (Roberts, 2002). Given that the board of directors has been charged with much more responsibility in recent years and is being held to a higher level of accountability than would historically be expected (Donnelly and Kelly, 2005), the choice of non-executives to continue to take up roles on …
