Do Fies Adopt Pro-Environmental Strategies In Developing Countries?, David D. Klossner Jun 2009

Do Fies Adopt Pro-Environmental Strategies In Developing Countries?, David D. Klossner

Student Scholarship

This study explores how US manufacturing firms with operations in India construe their roles and responsibilities relative to host country environmental concerns and how they develop environment-related strategies. In particular, we hope to advance understanding of the relative influence of internal versus external factors that influence decision processes and ultimate corporate behaviors. How do managers of FIEs understand the factors that influence the adoption of pro-environmental strategies in developing countries? To what extent are FIE environmental strategies motivated by internal factors versus external factors? How and to what extent do FIE management initiatives involving firm-specific resources and organizational capabilities affect …

Team Health: What Are Technical Project Teams Saying Or Not Saying?, Judith Sanders Jun 2009

Team Health: What Are Technical Project Teams Saying Or Not Saying?, Judith Sanders

Student Scholarship

There is a critical need for highly effective teams, but Marchetti (1997) notes teams, while in considerable demand, fail often. Despite a great deal of practitioner and academic literature that has addressed a variety of factors regarding teams and their inability to achieve intended objectives (Hackman, 1990; Robbins & Finley, 1995), teams are still not sufficiently understood (Sahay & Sarker, 2002). Researchers and practitioners alike have asked why it is so difficult to develop and maintain teams that meet performance expectations. Although team research came to the forefront in the 1950s, only in recent years have researchers begun to study …

Deterministic Chaos In A Model Of Discrete Manufacturing, John J. Iii Bartholdi, Donald D. Eisenstein, Yun Fong Lim Jun 2009

Deterministic Chaos In A Model Of Discrete Manufacturing, John J. Iii Bartholdi, Donald D. Eisenstein, Yun Fong Lim

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

A natural extension of the bucket brigade model of manufacturing is capable of chaotic behavior in which the product intercompletion times are, in effect, random, even though the model is completely deterministic. This is, we believe, the first proven instance of chaos in discrete manufacturing. Chaotic behavior represents a new challenge to the traditional tools of engineering management to reduce variability in production lines. Fortunately, if configured correctly, a bucket brigade assembly line can avoid such pathologies.

An Evaluation Of Interventions Designed To Impact Nurses : A Pilot Project, Pamela G. Bing Perry Jun 2009

An Evaluation Of Interventions Designed To Impact Nurses : A Pilot Project, Pamela G. Bing Perry

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This pilot project was designed from a systems approach as defined within the field of marriage and family (MFT). Systems theory has been used successfully in examining and working with organizational relationships as exemplified in the work of Edwin H. Friedman. His contribution includes several books specifically developed for use in organizations; one that was tailored for religious groups; and another for managers (Friedman, 2007). While other MFT modalities have also been used effectively with organizations, the complexity of the influences operating within an organization most closely matches the systems approach. For this reason, this is the conceptual framework applied …

Summary -- Entrepreneurial Uncertainty: What Do Stakeholders Look For?, Douglas A. Bosse, Jeffrey S. Harrison Jun 2009

Summary -- Entrepreneurial Uncertainty: What Do Stakeholders Look For?, Douglas A. Bosse, Jeffrey S. Harrison

Management Faculty Publications

This paper proposes that in the early stages of a venture entrepreneurs can reduce uncertainty for stakeholders -- and raise the probability of attracting desirable stakeholders -- by exhibiting behaviors associated with fairness and justice. Actors base their reciprocal behaviors -- both positive and negative -- on their subjective perceptions of distributive, procedural and interactional justice. Thus, entrepreneurs can influence perceptions of fairness in early interactions with stakeholders. This paper extends the logic of reciprocity and fairness to the setting in which entrepreneurial firms are seeking to attract desirable stakeholders in order to commercialize innovations.

Effects Of Country-Level Legal, Extra-Legal And Political Institutions On Auditing: A Cross-Country Analysis Of The Auditor Specialization Premium, Bin Sirinidhi, Chee Yeow Lim, Mahmud Hossain Jun 2009

Effects Of Country-Level Legal, Extra-Legal And Political Institutions On Auditing: A Cross-Country Analysis Of The Auditor Specialization Premium, Bin Sirinidhi, Chee Yeow Lim, Mahmud Hossain

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

In this cross-country study of the specialist auditor premium, which spans the US and 12 other countries, we provide evidence that country-level institutional strength increases average audit fees, but reduces the incremental demand for specialist auditors. This finding supports the hypothesis that strong institutions and the demand for specialist knowledge act as substitutes in providing the requisite assurance of financial statements.

Information Sharing And Strategic Signaling In Supply Chains, Robert J. Kauffman, Hamid Mohtadi Jun 2009

Information Sharing And Strategic Signaling In Supply Chains, Robert J. Kauffman, Hamid Mohtadi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Information sharing in procurement occurs in rich and varied industry contexts in which managerial decisions are made and organizational strategy is formulated. We explore how information sharing ought to work in procurement contexts that involve investments in inter-organizational information systems (IOS) and collaborative planning, forecasting and replenishment (CPFR) practices. How and under what circumstances does a firm that plays the role of a supply chain buyer decide to share information on key variables, such as point-of-sale consumer demand data with its supplier, up the supply chain? This is a key issue that crosses the boundary between supply chain management and …

Ethical Issues Concerning The Experience Of Representational Predicaments At Work, Robin Stanley Snell, Mei Ling, May Wong, Suk Kwan, Sandy Hui Jun 2009

Ethical Issues Concerning The Experience Of Representational Predicaments At Work, Robin Stanley Snell, Mei Ling, May Wong, Suk Kwan, Sandy Hui

Hong Kong Institute of Business Studies Working Paper Series

Representational predicaments refer to situations in which job incumbents believe that dominant authorities are holding incomplete or otherwise incorrect work-related assumptions about them. We carried out qualitative interviews with a diverse and gender-balanced sample of 55 Hong Kong Chinese job incumbents, from whose perspective we identified three broad categories of representational predicament: (1) doing unvalued work; (2) doing thankless work; and (3) being subject to distorted representation. Each category of representational predicament was reported both by female and male informants, with females reporting more representational predicaments than males. Stories of unvalued work referred either to unnoticed and unvalued work, which …

The Long-Term Effects Of Cross-Listing, Investor Recognition, And Ownership Structure On Valuation, Michael R. King, Dan Segal Jun 2009

The Long-Term Effects Of Cross-Listing, Investor Recognition, And Ownership Structure On Valuation, Michael R. King, Dan Segal

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We show that investor recognition and bonding associated with a U.S. cross-listing are distinct effects using a sample of Canadian firms. In contrast to the post-listing decline documented in the literature, we find that cross-listed firms with a single class of shares enjoy a permanent increase in valuation if they attract and maintain investor recognition over time. Valuations of firms that fail to widen their U.S. shareholder base return to pre-listing levels within two years. Cross-listed firms with dual-class shares exhibit a permanent increase in valuation regardless of the level of U.S. investor holdings, consistent with firm-level bonding.

A Re-Examination Of China's Share Issue Privatization, Guohua Jiang, Heng Yue, Longkai Zhao Jun 2009

A Re-Examination Of China's Share Issue Privatization, Guohua Jiang, Heng Yue, Longkai Zhao

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

Previous studies show that in contrast to evidence that share issue privatization (SIP) in most other countries have improved firm profitability, China's SIP of the 1990s had no such effect. We argue that the main reason for the failure of China's SIP is likely to have been the weak institutional environment in place at that time. We examine China's SIP in a more recent period in which the institutional environment was greatly improved. Using a matching sample method, we find that SIP firms continued to experience negative post-SIP profitability changes in our sample period. However, their performance decline was significantly …

Tax Competition In The Film Industry, Chelsea Villareal Jun 2009

Tax Competition In The Film Industry, Chelsea Villareal

Anthós

Being one of the largest industries in the world, the film industry remains an economic powerhouse in our society. It’s for this reason that film’s messages are not the only political aspects of their creation. Senators and representatives across the country are increasingly seeing the film industry as key towards economic development. With incentive packages being placed around the country, the politics over the film industry have become an overwhelming power game. Politicians are being threatened with recalls and impeachment to keep their economies afloat during harsh economic times. Without raising taxes, representatives have hit a wall. Increasing debt and …

Complexity Leadership In Bureaucratic Forms Of Organizing: A Meso Model, Mary Uhl-Bien, Russ Marion Jun 2009

Complexity Leadership In Bureaucratic Forms Of Organizing: A Meso Model, Mary Uhl-Bien, Russ Marion

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

We consider Complexity Leadership Theory in contexts of bureaucratic forms of organizing to describe how adaptive dynamics can work in combination with administrative functions to generate emergence and change in organizations. Complexity leadership approaches are consistent with the central assertion of the meso argument that leadership is multi-level, processual, contextual, and interactive. In this paper we focus on the adaptive function, an interactive process between adaptive leadership (an agentic behavior) and complexity dynamics (non-agentic social dynamics) that generates emergent outcomes (e.g., innovation, learning, adaptability) for the firm. Propositions regarding the actions of complexity leadership in bureaucratic forms of organizing are …

Price Trends And Patterns In Technical Analysis: A Theoretical And Empirical Examination, Geoffrey C. Friesen, Paul Weller, Lee Dunham Jun 2009

Price Trends And Patterns In Technical Analysis: A Theoretical And Empirical Examination, Geoffrey C. Friesen, Paul Weller, Lee Dunham

Department of Finance: Faculty Publications

While many technical trading rules are based upon patterns in asset prices, we lack convincing explanations of how and why these patterns arise, and why trading rules based on technical analysis are profitable. This paper provides a model that explains the success of certain trading rules that are based on patterns in past prices. We point to the importance of confirmation bias, which has been shown to play a key role in other types of decision making. Traders who acquire information and trade on the basis of that information tend to bias their interpretation of subsequent information in the direction …

Motivated To Serve: An Empirical Examination Of Motivation And Consequences In The Public And Nonprofit Organizations, Sung Min Park, Jessica Word Jun 2009

Motivated To Serve: An Empirical Examination Of Motivation And Consequences In The Public And Nonprofit Organizations, Sung Min Park, Jessica Word

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research

This article draws upon a sample of nonprofit and state government managers to examine the role that service motivation plays in both sectors. The research addressed three main questions: 1) what are the main motivational types and constructs of managers in the public and nonprofit sectors? 2) what differences exist between these sectors in terms of level of motivation? And 3) what are the long-term and short-term consequences of different types of motivation? Our findings suggest that in many ways public and nonprofit managers are similar in terms of the importance of intrinsic versus extrinsic rewards. Public and nonprofit managers …

Salespeople's Renqing Orientation, Self-Esteem, And Selling Behaviors: An Empirical Study In Taiwan, Ming-Hong Tsai, Shu-Cheng Steve Chi, Hsia-Hua Hu Jun 2009

Salespeople's Renqing Orientation, Self-Esteem, And Selling Behaviors: An Empirical Study In Taiwan, Ming-Hong Tsai, Shu-Cheng Steve Chi, Hsia-Hua Hu

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The purpose of this study was to investigate how salespeople's renqing orientation and self-esteem jointly affect their selling behavior. Data were obtained from a survey of salespeople from 17 pharmaceutical and consumer-goods companies in Taiwan (n = 216).Salespeople's renqing orientation (i.e., their propensity to adhere to the accepted norm of reciprocity) compensates the negative effect of self-esteem on their selling behaviors, such as adaptive selling and hard work. Our study results underscore the critical role of the character trait of renqing orientation in a culture emphasizing a norm of reciprocity. Therefore, it would be useful to consider a strategy of …

Consumer Show Visitors: A Case Study , Kara Grau

Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications

Tourism marketers often have a difficult time trying to weigh the costs and benefits of exhibiting at consumer shows. What defines success at a consumer show is different for each exhibitor, so a show that has great potential for one exhibitor may not be worth the effort and expense for another. In light of this, this case study was undertaken in an effort to answer several questions about attendees of the Washington Sportsmen’s Show, held in Puyallup, Washington in January, 2009.

The Two Faces Of Control: Network Closure And Individual Performance Among Knowledge Workers, Martin Gargiulo, Gokhan Ertug, Charles Galunic Jun 2009

The Two Faces Of Control: Network Closure And Individual Performance Among Knowledge Workers, Martin Gargiulo, Gokhan Ertug, Charles Galunic

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper argues that the effect of dense social ties, or network closure, on a knowledge worker's performance depends on the predominant role this worker plays with his or her exchange partners in the relationships affected by that closure. Using data on informal exchanges among investment bankers in the equities division of a large financial services firm operating in Europe, Asia-Pacific, Africa, and the Americas in 2001, we find that network closure in relationships in which the banker acts as an acquirer of information increases his or her performance, whereas closure in relationships in which the banker acts as a …

Exporting Expertise: Singapore’S Gambits In The Middle East, Caroline Yeoh, Wilfred Pow Ngee How Jun 2009

Exporting Expertise: Singapore’S Gambits In The Middle East, Caroline Yeoh, Wilfred Pow Ngee How

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Singapore’s regionalization stratagem points increasingly towards the influence of both the sociopolitical environment and the economics of competition, in a business environment with an ever-growing number of competitors; to the extent that other forces, particularly political ones, are often sidelined. A more in-depth study of the above two influences is best performed in a context comparatively free of the implicit complex political facets but with sufficiently rich environments to challenge internationalizing firms, and distinct influences to draw pertinent conclusions from. For this purpose, the continually expanding business environments and the unique cultures of the Middle East provide the perfect context …

Categories In Evaluation Of Innovative Activities Of Competing Firms, Xuesong Geng Jun 2009

Categories In Evaluation Of Innovative Activities Of Competing Firms, Xuesong Geng

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

I examine how the stock market evaluation of a firm’s innovative activities is influenced by the categorization of the firm and its rivals. I find that innovations that blur the industry boundaries cause negative evaluation bias, but the competing innovations by outside industry firms cause positive evaluation bias in firm valuation.

When The Negotiator Sees Red, Jayanth Narayanan, Jochen Reb, Jianwen Chen, Xue Zheng Jun 2009

When The Negotiator Sees Red, Jayanth Narayanan, Jochen Reb, Jianwen Chen, Xue Zheng

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The negotiations literature abounds with studies about how cognitive heuristics affect negotiation outcomes. However, the role of colors in negotiations remains unexplored. The color red is associated with male dominance and leads to superior outcomes in sporting contests (Hill and Barton, 2005a). In this study, we examined the effect of wearing the color red on outcomes in distributive negotiations. Our findings revealed that when male negotiators wore red clothing, they gained a distributive advantage over their counterpart wearing white.
