The Impact Of Selected Corporate Governance Variables In Mitigating Earnings Management In The Philippines, Mc Reynald S. Banderlipe Ii

Given the increasing importance of corporate governance in the Philippines, this study attempts to explain the role of selected governance variables related to a company’s board of directors in mitigating earnings management in the country. Using the financial statements of publicly listed companies and a modified measurement model, the findings revealed that the holding of multiple directorial positions by the independent directors, and the managerial ownership of the board are significant enough to limit the incentives for earnings management. Moreover, firm size and return on assets were identified to have explanatory significance among the controlling factors.

The perspective is that the entire learning process in a course will be experienced through sets of activities designed by the faculty. These sets or clusters of problems and activities are unique to the contents and objectives of the course as well as to the varying needs and capabilities of the students. Through management activities created and designed by the faculty, learning takes place. This innovative teaching model incorporates other common teaching methodologies which include small group presentation, facilitated discussion of cases, and lecture-discussion approach.

This paper investigates the relationship between Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and labour productivity. The paper is able to clarify whether employees of foreign firms record significantly higher productivity levels than their counterparts in domestic firms in Nigeria’s manufacturing sector. Using data from the World Bank Nigerian Manufacturing Survey 2001, employing an Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression model run on STATA, the paper finds that employees in foreign firms exhibit higher levels of productivity than their counterparts in domestic manufacturing firms. The present research was designed to explore the impact of manager’s orientation on the job satisfaction of their subordinates. The sample consisted of 120 employees; 20 managers and 100 of their subordinates ranging in age from 23 to 54 taken from different organizations of Multan. Motivator’s Orientation Questionnaire (Deci, Connell, & Ryan 1989) and Job Satisfaction Questionnaire (Hackman & Oldham, 1975) were used to collect the information. Results indicated that subordinates working under autonomy oriented managers are more satisfied with their jobs as compared to the subordinates working under controlled oriented managers. The study computes the carbon dioxide emissions of the Philippines for the period of 2000 to 2006 and applies a production perspective input-output analysis to identify the key sectors whose value-added growth were responsible for the increase in emissions of the country and those that exhibited increased sectoral emissions from overall income growth. Power generation turned out to be the primary sector while cement manufacture, wholesale/retail trade, mining, road and water transport, and private services were revealed as the secondary sectors, jointly accounting for 0.66% increase in the country’s emissions from a 1% growth in their valueadded and experiencing 0.75% …

Perceived Organizational Effectiveness Of Labor Unions In The Banking, Hotel, And Manufacturing Industries, Divina M. Edralin

To determine the extent of influence of the organization’s context and structure factors on the perceived effectiveness of labor unions in the banking, hotel, and manufacturing industries in the National Capital Region, 88 local unions consisting of 772 rank-and-file and supervisory union members from 82 firms were covered. It is evident from the results that the level of union effectiveness as perceived by the members is a function of two major organizational factors, namely, context and structure. Moreover, there are significant differences in the average level of effectiveness rating of unions per industry.

“The learning Filipino firm” can be classified into three types, namely the reactive firm, which is a reluctant learner; the adaptive firm, which is an eager learner; and the generative firm, which is a dynamic learner. This typology is based on the hypothesis that a firm’s learning style and its innovative capability is influenced by its organizational design. Among the key dimensions that must be considered are as follows: (a) organizational strategy, (b) organizational structure, and (c) organizational culture. These dimensions are closely intertwined, and, therefore, collectively influence a firm’s ability to constantly renew itself.

We conducted a two-study examination of relationships between abusive supervision and subordinates’ workplace deviance. Consistent with predictions derived from power/dependence theory, the results of a cross-sectional study with employees from three organizations suggest that abusive supervision is more strongly associated with subordinates’ organization deviance and supervisor-directed deviance when subordinates’ intention to quit is higher. The results also support the prediction that when intention to quit is higher, abusive supervision is more strongly associated with supervisor-directed deviance than with organization-directed deviance. Drawing from self-construal studies on cognitive styles as well as reference price literature, this research investigates the impact of independent versus interdependent self-construal on consumers' use of internal reference prices (IRPs) and external reference prices (ERPs) during price evaluations. Three experiments reveal that IRPs have a larger impact on price evaluations for participants who are primed with an independent (vs. interdependent) self-construal, whereas ERPs have a larger impact for participants who are primed with an interdependent (vs. independent) self-construal. The differential impact of self-construal on the use of IRPs and ERPs seems to be mediated by a generalized, perceived sense …

Decision makers can become trapped by myopic regret avoidance in which rejecting feedback to avoid short-term outcome regret (regret associated with counterfactual outcome comparisons) leads to reduced learning and greater long-term regret over continuing poor decisions. In a series of laboratory experiments involving repeated choices among uncertain monetary prospects, participants primed with outcome regret tended to decline feedback, learned the task slowly or not at all, and performed poorly. This pattern was reversed when decision makers were primed with self-blame regret (regret over an unjustified decision). This study incorporates the external environmental context into the study of corporate acquisitions by examining the performance implications of corporate acquisitions during an environmental jolt that alters the levels of environmental munificence. We posit that compared to the periods before and after an environmental jolt, corporate acquisitions during a jolt would be positively related to firm performance. Furthermore, we suggest that organizational slack would improve firm performance and accentuate the positive relationship between corporate acquisitions and firm performance during an environmental jolt; however, it would have negative impact on firm performance and make the acquisition-performance relationship more negative before and …

Establishing the microfoundations of academic entrepreneurship requires closer scrutiny of a key actor contributing to this phenomenon—the university scientist. We investigate the sense-making that scientists engage in as part of their participation in technology transfer and postulate that this process involves a potential modification in their role identity. We analyzed more than 70 h of interview data at a premier U.S. public research university. We observe that scientists invoke rationales for involvement that are congruent with their academic role identity. This study fills a key gap in research on response instructions in situational judgment tests (SJTs). The authors examined whether the assumptions behind the differential effects of knowledge and behavioral tendency SJT response instructions hold in a large-scale high-stakes selection context (i.e., admission to medical college). Candidates (N = 2,184) were randomly assigned to a knowledge or behavioral tendency response instruction SJT, while SJT content was kept constant. Contrary to prior research in low-stakes settings, no meaningfully important differences were found between mean scores for the response instruction sets.
