Boeing Dreamliner:A Project Management Study, Fahad Aldhaban, Chris Mcginnis, Wendy Peterman, Noah Third, Tom Torres
Engineering and Technology Management Student Projects
The 787 Dreamliner aircraft project required not only the application and integration of new construction materials, it also required new project management techniques for Boeing. By outsourcing most of the aircraft fabrication, Boeing’s primary role changed from designer and manufacturer to system integrator. Hindsight shows that more preparation and planning was needed for this transition. This case study review of the Boeing Dreamliner examines the project management techniques actually employed during the initiation and execution phases of the project. Techniques evolved from the start of the project to what is used currently. Best practices and recommendations for how a large-scale …

A Triadic View Of Truck Driver Satisfaction, Stephen A. Lemay, Zachary Williams, Michael Carver
A Triadic View Of Truck Driver Satisfaction, Stephen A. Lemay, Zachary Williams, Michael Carver
Journal of Transportation Management
In this research, the authors surveyed three groups concerning job satisfaction: experienced drivers, new drivers, and managers. Statistical tests were conducted using a sample of 196 new drivers, 145 experienced drivers, and 59 managers from a large TL firm based in the U.S. The results suggest that many discrepancies exist on driver satisfaction among the three perspectives. In particular, new drivers provide managers with opportunities and challenges for satisfaction. Given the current state of the trucking industry, managers will likely benefit from approaching this segment of drivers differently to meet their expectations and keep them from leaving their firms.
Private Warehouse Investment Strategies In Small Versus Large Manufacturing Firms, John E. Spillan, Michael A. Mcginnis, Jonathan W. Kohn
Private Warehouse Investment Strategies In Small Versus Large Manufacturing Firms, John E. Spillan, Michael A. Mcginnis, Jonathan W. Kohn
Journal of Transportation Management
The research reported in this manuscript empirically compares the private warehouse investment strategies of small and large manufacturing firms. Mail surveys were administered to independent samples of small and large United States manufacturing firms. This research is based on a series of identically worded questions administered to both samples. Data was factor analyzed and cluster analyzed to identify three private warehouse investment strategies for small and large firms and two strategies for large firms. Analyses of three independent variables further evaluated differences in private warehouse investment strategies. Finally, the warehouse mix of small and of large firms was compared. This …
The Impact Of Hours-Of-Service Regulations On Transportation Productivity And Safety: A Summary Of Findings From The Literature, Hokey Min
Journal of Transportation Management
Since driver fatigue has known to be the primary cause of serious truck crashes, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has attempted to implement new hours-of-service (HOS) regulations that aimed to promote safer driving environments. The new HOS regulations effective on October T‘ of2005, however, may lead to substantial cost increases for the trucking industry which will in turn hurt shippers and ultimately customers. For instance, motor carriers may need to hire additional drivers to comply with new HOS regulations requiring that drivers be placed out of service until they accumulated enough off-duty time. In particular, off-duty breaks required …

Collaborative Standards, Voluntary Codes And Industry Self-Regulation, Lawrence J. Lad, Craig B. Caldwell
Scholarship and Professional Work - Business
In a complex, global economy, firms seek a range of mechanisms for addressing regulatory and social movement pressures. This requires an evolution beyond our current models of response to regulation and control. This paper offers ideas on collaborative control and industry self-regulation as alternative mechanisms for addressing regulatory complexity. It explores a range of self-regulatory practices worldwide, proposes a framework for examining its use, potential and limits, and discusses the critical role of third-party organisations in the process.

Why Os/2 Failed: Business Mistakes Compounded By Memory Prices, Eric G. Swedin
Why Os/2 Failed: Business Mistakes Compounded By Memory Prices, Eric G. Swedin
Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology
"In 2006, IBM ended their support of OS/2, closing the book on an ambitious effort to create a modern operating system for the personal computer. IBM and Microsoft released the OS/2 operating system in December 1987 to replace the primitive DOS with a more sophisticated, preemptive multitasking operating system for personal computers. This article argues that OS/2 failed because of the U.S.-Japan Semiconductor Trade Agreement of 1986, subsequent accusations of DRAM chip dumping by the United States, and the resulting tariffs on Japanese memory chips, led to a memory chip shortage that drove up memory prices. OS/2 required substantially more …

Using The Federal Reserve Bank Of San Francisco’S Online Fed Chairman Game In The Classroom, Derek Stimel
Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology
"We describe the interactive Fed Chairman Game available on the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco’s website. We discuss how the game can be used in principles of macroeconomics and provide an assignment to go along with it. Also, we discuss an assignment that can be used to adapt the game for an upper division course such as intermediate macroeconomics or money and banking, using Microsoft Excel. The game is a type of active learning. "

A Case For Teaching Business Ethics In A Cost-Benefits Framework: Are Business Students More Discriminating In Their Decision Making?, Steven R. Cox, Kathy Parkison, Dianne M. Roden
Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology
"Based on a survey questionnaire of 299 university students, we find that business majors act more ethically than other majors in some cases and less ethically in others. Business students appear more likely to adopt the consequentialist framework to evaluate ethical dilemmas. Our results are consistent with business students being more discriminating based on the perceived costs and benefits of each case. We find differences in behavior based on active versus passive unethical behavior and based on the identity of the potentially harmed party. This evidence suggests that business school curricula that focus on acting ethically because it is the …
A Freer Markets Approach To Fixing The Housing Market, Clark L. Maxam, Marycarol B. Maxam
A Freer Markets Approach To Fixing The Housing Market, Clark L. Maxam, Marycarol B. Maxam
Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology
The unprecedented level of government intervention in recent financial markets has mainly ignored the root cause of the financial institution balance sheet problem: housing prices. Rather than apply taxpayer dollars to the symptoms (i.e. buying securities), policies directed at reducing inefficiencies and poor incentives in the housing market will help fix the system from the bottom up and motivate the substantial capital waiting in the wings to buy distressed housing assets. This paper proposes eliminating some of these frictions and inducing positive optionality in the housing market to better incentivize fresh housing investment at a much lower cost than many …

Perspectives On The Sources And Eventual Outcome Of The 2008 Economic And Financial Crisis: A Panel Discussion, Stephen T. Evans, David Tufte, Steven D. Harrop, Robb Kerry, Joe G. Baker
Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology
"In October 2008 the Southern Utah University School of Business held a panel discussion on the current economic crisis. This discussion was part of the School’s Business Convocation series and was open to the public. The panel was designed with two components in mind. First, a pair of academics with expertise in financial institutions and business cycles offered historical and theoretical perspectives on the crisis. Second, a pair of professionals – a local banking official and a fund manager – offered perspectives on the current financial situation and practical experience based on the policy responses to past crises. As moderator, …
Myths And Realities Of College Retirement, Dennis Vredenburg
Myths And Realities Of College Retirement, Dennis Vredenburg
Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology
This paper will discuss the present difficulties being experienced by American college professors with respect to their planning and preparing for retirement. Current macroeconomic conditions are forcing state and institutional budget and program cuts at colleges and universities across the country, increasing job insecurity for many academics. Simultaneously, stock market losses, reductions in the values of real estate, the erosion of the value of personal pensions, and other related challenges are forcing many seasoned American college professors to rethink their retirement plans. Relatively new options exist for today’s academic instructors as well, including not retiring at all, whether for financial …

Roles And Capabilities Of The Retail Supply Chain Organization, C. Clifford Defee, Wesley S. Randall, Brian J. Gibson
Journal of Transportation Management
Supply chain management (SCM) has become a critical strategic function in recent years. Research in the discipline has been focused toward the upstream side of the supply chain on functions such as warehousing, transportation, procurement and production. As power has shifted downstream toward retailers and their customers, SCM research has been slow to respond. This represents a significant gap, and a significant opportunity. Retailers face challenges that differ from those found in upstream suppliers and manufacturers. We present findings from a study of senior supply chain executives in the retail industry that focuses on the supply chain challenges of greatest …
Generational Perceptions - Workers And Consumers, Arlene J. Nicholas
Generational Perceptions - Workers And Consumers, Arlene J. Nicholas
Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers
Today’s workers and consumers consist of four generations of individuals raised with very different technologies and lifestyles. According to Murphy (2007), “different perspectives on issues like work ethic, leadership, and authority can cause conflict, frustration, and misunderstanding if not managed well” (p.18). In a recent “World of Work Survey” (2008), the older and younger generations noted little or no interaction with the other. Working with and learning from one another, as well as knowing what appeals to the generations as consumers, is critical for organizations. Understanding these differences will enable improved communications for the workforce and the consumer.
Stochastic Business Cycle Volatilities, Capital Accumulation And Economic Growth: Lessons From The Global Credit Market Crisis, Kwamie Dunbar
Stochastic Business Cycle Volatilities, Capital Accumulation And Economic Growth: Lessons From The Global Credit Market Crisis, Kwamie Dunbar
WCBT Faculty Publications
The recent global economic downturn in a number of economies was preceded by rising credit market risk brought on by a massive financial market failure. This paper develops a small open economy model that analyzes the interaction of business cycle volatilities with capital accumulation and the subsequent impacts on economic growth. We use a stochastic dynamic programming model to test the central hypothesis that rising volatility shocks is an inhibitor to capital accumulation and subsequently economic growth. The model illustrates that traditional capital-based growth models which assume a constant capital stock are not consistent with the business cycle variation in …

Finance Flies High: How Unilever Redesigned The Finance Function To Build Brand Value And Drive Growth, Barbara M. Tarasovich, Bridget Lyons
WCBT Faculty Publications
Unilever's finance team played a key role in the success of their brands. The company achieved its fourth consecutive year of accelerating organic sales growth from less than 0.5% in 2004 to more than 7% in 2008, according to Jim Lawrence, Unilever's CFO. Its strategy is to focus on volume growth and strengthening the competitive position of the company's brands. In this article, the authors examine how the finance function at Unilever was redesigned to deliver the firm's strategic goals, including an emphasis on volume growth and competitive position of its brands. Beginning in 2005, the finance team at Unilever …

Valuating Brand Equity And Product Related Attributes In The Context Of The German Automobile Market, Marc Fetscherin, Mark Toncar
Faculty Publications
The concept of consumer-based brand equity has been discussed widely in the literature and there are a wide variety of both quantitative and qualitative measures used to assess it. For the most part, previous research has studied the way a brand and product attributes are perceived in a consumer’s mind and the empirical data used in most studies is based on self-reported survey data. In this research, objective data from the largest German Automobile Association, including actual prices, objective quality ratings of product attributes and market share of brands are used to estimate their effect on the actual price set …

An Examination Of The Impact Of Alternative Accounting Procedures On Risk-Taking Behavior: A Test Of Prospect Theory, Morris H. Stocks, Martha M. Pointer
An Examination Of The Impact Of Alternative Accounting Procedures On Risk-Taking Behavior: A Test Of Prospect Theory, Morris H. Stocks, Martha M. Pointer
ETSU Faculty Works
Many business decisions which use accounting information are made under conditions of uncertainty and are biased, in part, on relative gains and losses. Therefore, accounting settings appear to be a particularily appropriate setting to test the predictions of prospect theory. To date, little accounting research has been conducted which has used prospect theory as its theoretical foundation. Using a discount period decision under risk, practicing accountants were asked to indicated he likelihood of making an inventory payment. The results of the study provide limited support fo prospect theory propositions. It also is interesting that the perceptions of and ethical conflict …

Origins And Resolution Of Financial Crises: Lessons From The Current And Northern European Crises, Finn Ostrup, Lars Oxelheim, Clas Wihlborg
Business Faculty Articles and Research
Since July 2007, the world economy has experienced a severe financial crisis that originated in the U.S. housing market. Subsequently, the crisis has spread to financial sectors in European and Asian economies and led to a severe worldwide recession. The existing literature on financial crises rarely distinguishes between factors that create the original strain on the financial sector and factors that explain why these strains lead to system-wide contagion and a possible credit crunch. Most of the literature on financial crises refers to factors that cause an original disruption in the financial system. We argue that a financial crisis with …

Seeking Emotion Enhancement Or Uncertainty Resolution? A Dual-System Approach To Examining Post-Purchase Information Search, Hanwen Hannah Chang, Cecile Cho, Leonard Lee
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Product information search is typically assumed to follow the recognition of a purchase need and to occur before decision making. Once a sale transaction is completed, searching for information (e.g. price) on the purchased product seems futile and even irrational. Real-life observation and prior research (e.g. Russo and Leclerc 1994), however, suggest that such post-purchase search behavior is pervasive among consumers despite having no apparent consequence.

Retaining Customers With Shopping Convenience, Sabine Moeller, Martin Fassnacht, Andreas Ettinger
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Our empirical research investigates the impact of dimensions of shopping convenience (decision, access, search, transaction, and after-sales convenience) on customer retention, including customer behavioral loyalty (shares of wallet and visits) and attitudinal loyalty (exit intention). Our findings show that for utilitarian shopping, behavioral and attitudinal loyalty are partly affected by different dimensions. Decision and access convenience, dimensions that come into play prior to the purchase, are most important for share of visits and share of wallet. Apart from decision convenience, exit intention is very much affected by transaction convenience, which is an in-store dimension. Furthermore, comparing our results with results …
Individuals And Contex00tual Factors: An Interactionist Approach To Understanding Self-Development, Gregory Paul Letller
Individuals And Contex00tual Factors: An Interactionist Approach To Understanding Self-Development, Gregory Paul Letller
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
While the extant research has identified several individual and contextual factors influential on an employee's quantity of self-development participation, no prior research has examined potential multiplicative effects among these factors. The current study investigated person-situation interactions among five individual factors ( e.g., self-efficacy for self-development, learning goal orientation, and openness to experience) and the contextual factors of organizational and supervisor support ( combined to reflect overall work support). This study also sought to investigate the influence of proactive personality on self-development participation, a promising individual difference that has received little attention in the self-development literature. Using data collected from 136 …

This is Old Dominion University's 10th annual State of the Region report. While it represents the work of many people connected in various ways to the university, the report does not constitute an official viewpoint of Old Dominion or it's president, John R. Broderick. The report maintains the goal of stimulating thought and discussion that ultimately will make Hampton Roads an even better place to live. We are proud of our region's many successes, but realize that it is possible to improve our performance. In order to do so, we must have accurate information about "where we are" and a …
