Hospitality Management Educators Vs. The Industry: A Competency Assessment, Michelle Millar, Zhenxing Mao, Patrick Moreo

Hospitality Management

An often-asked question in the hospitality industry is whether graduates of hospitality education programs possess the competencies that the hospitality industry believes students should possess. The purpose of this study is to determine the discrepancies, if any, in the competencies being taught in the classroom for hospitality tourism students versus what lodging and food and beverage professionals believe are the most important competencies to be taught. Semi-structured, personal in-depth interviews were conducted with both educators of, and industry professionals working in, lodging management, and the food and beverage industry. The results of this study, incorporated into a competency domain model, …

Hotel Guests’ Preferences For Green Hotel Attributes, Michelle Millar, Seyhmus Baloglu

Hospitality Management

The primary purpose of this study was to identify a list of green attributes guests would prefer to have in the guest room of a hotel. Using results from a mixture of qualitative and quantitative questions in a survey of attendees of a hotel developer’s conference, a list is presented. The green attributes include such items as recycling bins in the guest room, and energy saving lighting. Some attributes, however, such as refillable soap and shampoo dispensers, were not received favorably. Future environmental challenges the industry will face, along with defining a green hotel, are also presented.

Defining Information Systems As Work Systems: Implications For The Is Field, Steven Alter Jan 2008

Defining Information Systems As Work Systems: Implications For The Is Field, Steven Alter

Business Analytics and Information Systems

The lack of an agreed upon definition of information system is one of many obstacles troubling the academic information systems discipline. After listing a number of definitions of IS, this paper defines information system as a special case of work system as defined in Alter (1999a). This definition has many desirable characteristics: It is easy to understand; differentiates IS from IT; covers totally manual, partially automated, and totally automated information systems; links to a life cycle model that generates many insights about development and implementation problems; provides a simple guideline that helps in interpreting common IS/IT jargon; and has other …

Service System Fundamentals: Work System, Value Chain, And Life Cycle, Steven Alter Jan 2008

Service System Fundamentals: Work System, Value Chain, And Life Cycle, Steven Alter

Business Analytics and Information Systems

Service systems produce all services of significance and scope, yet the concept of service system is not well articulated in the service literature. This paper presents three interrelated frameworks as a first cut at the fundamentals of service systems. These frameworks identify basic building blocks and organize important attributes and change processes that apply across all service systems. Although relevant regardless of whether a service system uses IT, the frameworks are also potentially useful in visualizing the realities of moving toward automated service architectures. This paper uses two examples, one largely manual and one highly automated, to illustrate the potential …

A Primer On Spreadsheet Analytics, Thomas A. Grossman Jr.

Business Analytics and Information Systems

This paper provides guidance to an analyst who wants to extract insight from a spreadsheet model. It discusses the terminology of spreadsheet analytics, how to prepare a spreadsheet model for analysis, and a hierarchy of analytical techniques. These techniques include sensitivity analysis, tornado charts, and backsolving (or goal-seeking). This paper presents native-Excel approaches for automating these techniques, and discusses add-ins that are even more efficient. Spreadsheet optimization and spreadsheet Monte Carlo simulation are briefly discussed. The paper concludes by calling for empirical research, and describing desired features spreadsheet sensitivity analysis and spreadsheet optimization add-ins.

Attitude And Divergence In Business Students: An Examination Of Personality Differences In, Todd A. Brown Jan 2008

Attitude And Divergence In Business Students: An Examination Of Personality Differences In, Todd A. Brown

Faculty Publications

Many studies have reported that economics and business students have been more apt to act in self-interested ways when compared to their counterparts in other academic fields. It is our contention that past studies have not shed light on the underlying psychological differences which might be leading to this difference in behavior. We put forth evidence that certain business majors are correlated with a marked increase in levels of narcissism and decreased levels of empathy, as measured by psychological personality tests.

An Examination Of Accounting Majors' Ethical Decisions Before And After An Ethics Course Requirement, Violet Rogers, Aileen Smith

Faculty Publications

The increased focus on ethical decision making in the accounting profession has resulted in greater attention being paid to the education of future accountants. Texas is one of the states that requires a State Board approved university course in Accounting Ethics to be on the transcript of prospective CPA candidates. This study reports on research using senior/graduate level accounting majors at a Texas state university before the university course requirement and after the requirement. The survey presented four vignettes for the students to consider (i.e., 2 describe an ethical decision and 2 describe an unethical decision). Students were requested to …

Student Cheating Habits: A Predictor Of Workplace Deviance, Sharron M. Graves Jan 2008

Student Cheating Habits: A Predictor Of Workplace Deviance, Sharron M. Graves

Faculty Publications

Unethical behavior seems to be increasing exponentially in every facet of today's business environment. Property and production deviance are just two of the unethical behaviors exhibited by employees. According to a study conducted by S. Nonis and C. Swift (2001), students who engage in dishonest acts in college classes are more likely to engage in dishonest acts in the workplace. Research conducted during the three year period 2002 - 2005 by Don McCabe in conjunction with The Center for Academic Integrity at Duke University reveals that 70 percent of the 50,000 undergraduate students surveyed admit to some cheating (McCabe 2005). …

Work Based Learning - Graduating Through The Workplace, Margaret Linehan Jan 2008

Work Based Learning - Graduating Through The Workplace, Margaret Linehan

Reports

Higher education is currently undergoing rapid, unprecedented, and accelerating change. Employers and individuals are demanding an increase in the diversity of curricular choice and mix, reflecting increasingly rapid changes in the workplace and in society generally. Much of the rate of change has been driven by exponential advances in information and communications technology over recent decades. Until recent years, the emphasis in state-funded third-level education was almost entirely towards “foremployment” rather than “in-employment” education and training. In-employment training has, for the most part, been largely disconnected from the formal education qualifications system. The newer emphasis on upskilling of persons already …

Assessing Jit Performance: An Econometric Approach, Adam Maiga Jan 2008

Assessing Jit Performance: An Econometric Approach, Adam Maiga

Faculty Bibliography

This paper uses a sample of 131 just‐in‐time (JIT) firms and their matched non‐JIT firms obtained from Kinney and Wempe with 1977–1995 Compustat data to assess whether the relationship between JIT adoption and firm performance is endogenous. Results indicate a significant positive association between JIT adoption and firm performance and strongly indicate that the decision to adopt JIT is endogenous. We also show that asset productivity, sales growth, and leverage, are important in explaining the effect of JIT adoption on performance and that firm characteristics are an important contributor to unobserved heterogeneity. Furthermore, the econometric analyses in the form of …

Intentions To Use Information Technologies: An Integrative Model, Ron Thompson, Deborah Compeau, Chris Higgins, Nathaniel C. Lupton Jan 2008

Intentions To Use Information Technologies: An Integrative Model, Ron Thompson, Deborah Compeau, Chris Higgins, Nathaniel C. Lupton

Faculty Publications

An integrative model explaining intentions to use an information technology is proposed. The primary objective is to obtain a clearer picture of how intentions are formed, and draws on previous research such as the technology acceptance model (Davis, Bagozzi, & Warshaw, 1989) and the decomposed theory of planned behavior (Taylor & Todd, 1995a). The conceptual model was tested using questionnaire responses from 189 subjects, measured at two time periods approximately two months apart. The results generally supported the hypothesized relationships, and revealed strong influences of both personal innovativeness and computer self-efficacy.

Small Town Urban Revitalization: The Effect Of Pullman Square On Downtown Huntington, West Virginia, Amy R. Blankenship

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

After many years of being the center of shopping, business and entertainment, the downtown began to decline nationally. This decline began after the end of WWII and ran concurrent to the beginning of suburbanization and the emergence of large, indoor shopping malls. Many cities began to realize the importance of a healthy downtown and implemented strategies to revitalize their downtown. This thesis focuses on the emergence of Pullman Square in Huntington, WV, its effect on the downtown, and how it has spawned other retail development and revitalization strategies throughout the city center.

Ceo Compensation, Backdated Stock Options, And Compensation Committees, Steven A. Frankforter, Bret Becton

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

CEO compensation in U. S. based companies has undergone considerable scrutiny in recent years. Among the common observations are that U. S. executives are highly paid relative to those of other countries and that the disparities in compensations are increasing over time. In this study, we investigate the effects that backdated stock options, compensation committee structure and process, and ownership factors have on levels or executive compensation. Combining agency and organizational theory perspectives, we find CEO compensation positively associated with the presence of backdated stock options, few large-block stockholders, and small compensation committees.

A Web Search Model For Strategic Decision Making, Shailaja Venkatsubramanyan, Stephen K. Kwan Jan 2008

A Web Search Model For Strategic Decision Making, Shailaja Venkatsubramanyan, Stephen K. Kwan

Faculty Publications, Information Systems & Technology

Search services are now ubiquitously employed in satisfying the information needs of managers and business analysts involved in strategic decision making. In this paper, we propose a model of a user’s interaction with a search service in satisfying information needs and empirically evaluate the principal factors involved. Findings indicate that the information need type influences the search process more significantly than the specific search service being used. Consequently, managers and business analysts should pay particular attention to the types of information needs involved in a strategic decision.

Corporate Social Responsbility In Business Courses: How Can Generation Y Learn?, Joo-Gim Heaney, Damian Gleeson

Business Conference Papers

This paper deals with the teaching of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Business courses to Generation Y Business students in Australian universities. Generation Y students embody particular characteristics that may seem paradoxical, such as placing an increased emphasis on an improved materialistic lifestyle alongside green marketing or climate change issues. Generation Ys also highly value a balanced work-leisure environment but are comfortable with living on high levels of debt and expenses. The question then emerges: what is the most effective method of educating Generation Y Business students about CSR? A three-fold approach is proposed: a foundation of life-long learning about …
