The primary purpose of this study was to determine the various elements influencing recruitment and retention of nonprofit employees within Utah County. We measured retention by asking questions in four primary categories: 1) willingness to stay; 2) length of plans to stay (how long the employee plans to stay); 3) job satisfaction; and 4) perceived job availabilities. We measured one element of recruiting by asking employees about their job referral method (i.e., how they heard about the job opening for their current position). Credit Spreads And Capital Structure Policy, Howard Qi

What is the effect of capital structure policy on credit spreads? In a widely cited paper by Huang and Huang (2003), a few representative structural models of credit spreads have been calibrated and compared. Among them are the model by Collin-Dufresne and Goldstein (2001) and the one by Leland and Toft (1996). The former assumes exogenously given stationary mean-reverting leverage, the latter optimizes its capital structure endogenously. Their study shows that all the models they calibrated perform similarly in that they all explain a very small portion of the observed spreads. We make three improvements based on that study. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of roster turnover on demand in the National Basketball Association (NBA) over a five-year period (2000–2005) and compare these results to previous research on turnover in Major League Baseball (MLB). A censored regression equation was developed to examine the relationship between roster turnover and season attendance, while controlling for other potentially confounding variables in the model. The censored regression model was used to account for the capacity constraints by forecasting the level of demand beyond capacity using information from the uncensored observations. No longer the domain of big companies where it was equated with philanthropy, corporate social responsibility (CSR) is now part of the triple bottom-line. Businesses, big and small, must take into account the interests of `stakeholders’, not just `shareholders’. Singapore Management University law professor Eugene Tan is author of a working paper on the state of CSR in Singapore. According to Tan, the state has taken on the role of promoter and practitioner of CSR, a logical development in view of the dominant role of the government in the local economy.

How has Bangladesh managed to outperform other low-income countries by doubling per capita GDP growth from 1.6% in the 1980s to 3.3% in the 1990s and beyond? The World Bank cites several key factors including an active civil society and strong partnerships forged by the government with NGOs. Two visionary NGO leaders, Nobel Peace Laureate, Muhammad Yunus (founder of Grameen Bank), and Fazle Hasan Abed (founder and chairman of BRAC), co-winner of the 2007 Clinton Global Citizen Award, visited Singapore in August and Sept 2007 to deliver two lectures on their respective organisations.

This study examines the degree to which the leisure activity of "going to a movie film" influences an individual's image formation process, and therefore desire to visit the portrayed tourist destination. The results of this single case study are twofold. First, demographic differences occur between pretest and posttest measures of destination attributes as the result of exposure to a destination specific movie, and second, the desire to visit the film locations as expressed in the movie significantly vary by gender, age, and ethnicity.

Long before globalisation became a buzzword, large international advertising agencies had already gone down that road starting in the 1990s by aggressively expanded their domestic and international networks. According to Singapore Management University corporate communications professor Mark Chong, the preference of clients to streamline and integrate their brand communications across countries spurred communication agencies to gain a foothold in the international market under umbrella holding companies rather than individually.

For nearly 100 years, the mission of the Rockefeller Foundation, “to promote the well-being of humanity by addressing the root causes of serious problems”, has remained the same, even as the foundation continues to adapt its programmes to changing social, economic and cultural needs. It is also a leading proponent of innovation and change in the field of philanthropy itself. Jacqueline Khor, Associate Director, Rockefeller Foundation, delivered a lecture on new trends in philanthropy and the emergence of a new generation of “philanthro-capitalists” at a lecture organised by the Singapore Management University’s Lien Foundation Centre for Social Innovation.

The article focuses on developments affecting individual taxation in the U.S. It says that the Small Business and Work Opportunity Tax Act of 2007 raised the age requirements for Sec. 1(g) effective for tax years after May 2007. It notes that final regulations on the child and dependent care credit clarify that expenses for a child in kindergarten or higher grades do not qualify for the credit. Recommendations in the report "Reducing the Federal Tax Gap: A Report on Improving Voluntary Compliance" are cited, such as enhancement of taxpayer service.

Determinants Of International Equity Entry Mode: An Empirical Analysis, Ruth Clarke, Fernando Robles, Syed H. Akhter, Marcilio Machado

This empirical paper tests hypotheses exploring the use of equity investment in international market entry by US-based firms. We first establish the respondents' use of equity or non-equity, and their international presence, and then proceed to test for determinants of investment. Using transaction cost theory and resource base theory we examine the influences of asset specificity, tacitness of strategic resources, country similarity, business similarity, environmental uncertainty and behavioral uncertainty on firm decisions to make equity investments. Six hypotheses are presented and tested on a sample of self-identified firms engaged in international business. The results for the exploratory study are significant …

The subprime mortgage market, which consists of high-cost loans designed for borrowers with weak credit, has grown tremendously over the past ten years. Between 1993 and 2005, the subprime market experienced an average annual growth rate of 26 percent. As this market emerged, so did allegations that subprime loans contained predatory features or were the result of predatory sales practices.3 In the worst cases, brokers deceived borrowers about the meaning of loan terms or falsely promised to assist them in obtaining future refinance loans with better terms. Authentic Leadership: Development And Validation Of A Theory-Based Measure, Fred Walumbwa, Bruce Avolio, William Gardner, Tara Wernsing, Suzanne Peterson

This study developed and tested a theory-based measure of authentic leadership using five separate samples obtained from China, Kenya, and the United States. Confirmatory factor analyses supported a higher order, multidimensional model of the authentic leadership construct (the Authentic Leadership Questionnaire [ALQ]) comprising leader self-awareness, relational transparency, internalized moral perspective, and balanced processing. Structural equation modeling (SEM) demonstrated the predictive validity for the ALQ measure for important work-related attitudes and behaviors, beyond what ethical and transformational leadership offered. Finally, results revealed a positive relationship between authentic leadership and supervisor-rated performance. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

On December 13, 1994, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) eliminated certain schedules that included repairs and maintenance (R&M) disclosures previously required in annual reports and registration statements filed with the SEC. The purpose of this research is to determine if market participants utilized R&M information when making investment decisions. Resulting from a variance decomposition approach, the findings indicate that market participants did use R&M disclosures in their investment decisions. Thus, as a possible policy implication of this research, the SEC may want to reconsider the decision to eliminate the required R&M expenditure disclosures.

Short-Horizon Contrarian And Momentum Strategies In Asian Markets: An Integrated Analysis, Thomas H. Mcinish, David K. Ding, Chong Soo Pyun, Udomsak Wongchoti

In this paper, we test the profitability of short-term contrarian and momentum strategies, which take into account the effects of trading activity, size/value characteristics, and asymmetric investor responses to news regarding stock markets in Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore during 1990–2000. Except for the Taiwanese and Korean markets, “winner” (“loser”) portfolios experience subsequent reversal (momentum) of stock prices. Among actively traded stocks, significant contrarian profits can be obtained from only “winner” portfolios in Japan, while sizeable momentum profits from “loser portfolios” in both Japan and Hong Kong.

Conditional Conservatism In Accounting: New Measure And Tests Of Determinants, Giorgio Gotti

Following Basu’s (1995, 1997) seminal work, accounting literature adopted the Basu coefficient to measure conditional conservatism (among others, Ball et al. 2003; Ball et al. 2000; Ball et al. 2005; Ball and Shivakumar 2005; Lobo and Zhou 2006; Chandra et al. 2004). However, Basu’s choice of proxy for measuring the arrival of good/bad news, stock returns, introduces inaccuracy in the measure of conditional conservatism (Dietrich et al. 2007; Roychowdhury and Watts 2007; Givoly et al. 2007).
