Global Advertising And Its Implications On The Concept Of Spatial Identity: A Case Study Of Urban Billboard Advertising In Tunis, Kristen Hackett Apr 2008

Global Advertising And Its Implications On The Concept Of Spatial Identity: A Case Study Of Urban Billboard Advertising In Tunis, Kristen Hackett

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Tunisia is a country that has a very distinct and unique culture and collective identity that was shaped by their equally specific and unique history. With these facts in mind this, I was very shocked to see that the advertisements utilized in the city of Tunis to appeal to the Tunisian public, are very similar, if not that same to those of the United States and all around the world. At first, I was under the impression that manufacturers and advertising agencies played into spatial identities, such as those sovereign to demarcated nations or cultures, and that their advertisements would …

From Subsistence To Existence: Worker Strategies In The Recovery Of Talleres Union, Ryan Merz Apr 2008

From Subsistence To Existence: Worker Strategies In The Recovery Of Talleres Union, Ryan Merz

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The questions of how and why social movement actors develop and modify their strategies of contention have been the work of a significant amount of past political process theory work (Kurzman 1996;Kitschelt 1986; McAdam etc. all 1986). Although a correlation has been shown between Political Opportunity Structures and repertoire change (Kitschelt 1986), there is a lack of in depth qualitative research on these questions (Meyer 2004). In this paper I will attempt to help fill this void by using a case study of the recovered factory movement in Argentina. In this study I will begin by summarizing current academic research …

The project of organizing community-based handcraft production in the community began in 1995, and since then the TucumArte group has been quite successful in strengthening their production of woven basketry from the straw of tucumã, a locally abundant species of palm tree. This …

Determining Organization Excellence, Elliott Moseley

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The hotel and hospitality industry are flourishing at a greater and more rapid pace in the global context than ever before and with each new projected location there is a certain inevitable risk faced by investors in that property. The level of risk varies from one situation to the next and such potential owners/investors must be able to act and plan with confidence when investing in hotel real estate. This confidence can be accomplished with full understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of economic and market analyses within any particular location. One important tool that these individuals use is market …

Boulder City, Nevada Revenue Generating Analysis, Mayra A. Castro, Dolores P. Leyva, Arnetta M. Meagher, Wade Zimmerman Apr 2008

Boulder City, Nevada Revenue Generating Analysis, Mayra A. Castro, Dolores P. Leyva, Arnetta M. Meagher, Wade Zimmerman

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Boulder City (City) is unique in the State of Nevada as being a non-gaming city, maintaining a controlled growth ordinance, and steadfastly holding to its “small town” values and character. The City has been facing budgetary challenges as future expenditures are anticipated to continually exceed revenues if current services levels are maintained. Indeed, fiscal reviews indicate the City has been transferring contingency monies between funds to cover overages for the past several fiscal years. This “robbing Peter to pay Paul” methodology may offer a temporary solution to the shortage but may be detrimental as a long term solution.

Leverage Change, Debt Capacity, And Stock Prices, Jie Cai, Zhe (Joe) Zhang Apr 2008

Leverage Change, Debt Capacity, And Stock Prices, Jie Cai, Zhe (Joe) Zhang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We document a significantly negative effect of the change in a firm’s leverage ratio on its stock prices. This effect cannot be explained by popular asset pricing factors or firm characteristics. We find that the negative effect is stronger for firms with limited debt capacity. Moreover, firms with an increase in leverage ratio tend to have less future investment, even after controlling for growth option and target leverage. These findings are consistent with a dynamic view of the pecking-order theory that an increase in leverage reduces firms’ safe debt capacity and may lead to future underinvestment, thus reducing firm value. …

Which Shorts Are Informed?, Ekkehart Boehmer, Charles M. Jones, Xiaoyan Zhang Apr 2008

Which Shorts Are Informed?, Ekkehart Boehmer, Charles M. Jones, Xiaoyan Zhang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We construct a long daily panel of short sales using proprietary NYSE order data. From 2000 to 2004, shorting accounts for more than 12.9% of NYSE volume, suggesting that shorting constraints are not widespread. As a group, these short sellers are well informed. Heavily shorted stocks underperform lightly shorted stocks by a risk-adjusted average of 1.16% over the following 20 trading days (15.6% annualized). Institutional nonprogram short sales are the most informative; stocks heavily shorted by institutions underperform by 1.43% the next month (19.6% annualized). The results indicate that, on average, short sellers are important contributors to efficient stock prices.

Workplace Volunteerism: Bridging Demand Through Employee Liasions, Don E. Teague Apr 2008

Workplace Volunteerism: Bridging Demand Through Employee Liasions, Don E. Teague

Student Scholarship

A relationship between workplace volunteerism and the effectiveness of liaison employees is proposed that draws primarily upon four complementary sociological concepts: (1) the social identity theory (Tajfel, 1982); (2) a structural theory of action (Burt, 1982); (3) social capital (Adler & Kwon, 2002); and (4) weak-tie “bridges” (Granovetter, 1973). The complementary nature of each of the sociological theories is discussed to show how workplace volunteerism might be increased through the systematic application of their concepts. This paper proposes that workplace employees socially identify themselves with hierarchical workgroups at the workplace and utilize their strong and weak-tie relationships to influence their …

Authentic Leadership: Do Leader's Values Impact Their Authenticity In The Eyes Of Their Followers? A Quantitative Study, Barbara Clemenson Apr 2008

Authentic Leadership: Do Leader's Values Impact Their Authenticity In The Eyes Of Their Followers? A Quantitative Study, Barbara Clemenson

Student Scholarship

Leadership theory defines authentic leaders as those holding high moral values, and posits that authentic leaders, through their integrity and altruism, inspire followers to emulate them by also developing their own values, integrity and caring. If the authentic leadership construct is valid, then followers must perceive their leaders' integrity and altruism before they will desire to emulate them, and these perceptions should be influenced by leaders' value content. This empirical study addresses that fundamental question: Do leaders' values impact their perceived authenticity--their integrity and altruism--in the eyes of their followers?

Putting Ethics Into Environmental Law: Fiduciary Duties For Ethical Investment, Benjamin J. Richardson Apr 2008

Putting Ethics Into Environmental Law: Fiduciary Duties For Ethical Investment, Benjamin J. Richardson

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article argues that environmental law must target the financial sector, which sponsors and profits from environmental pillage. The rise of a system of finance capitalism has made the financial sector a crucial economic sector. A long-standing movement for socially responsible investment (SRI) has recently begun to advocate environmental standards for financiers. While the SRI movement has gained more influence in recent years, it has come at the price of jettisoning its former emphasis on ethical investment in favour of an instrumental, business case approach. Some modest legal reforms to improve the quality and extent of SRI have yet to …

In 1987 the U.S. Supreme Court recognized that, as sovereign political entities, federally recognized Native American tribal entities could operate gaming facilities free of state regulation. Soon after, Congress introduced the 1988 Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA), which maps out the conditions under which Native American tribal entities are permitted to operate casinos and bingo parlors (Kilby, Fox, & Lucas, 2005). These terms and conditions for Native American casinos under IGRA regulation are Class II gaming methods. Class II gaming is defined as the game of chance commonly known as bingo (regardless of electronic, computer, or other technological aid) (Kilby …

Shamanisn has been a part of American culture since the colonial settlement and continues today despite technology and modern scientific rationalism. This chapter is a brief social history of the African-American shamanic …

Do Precious Metals Markets Influence Stock Markets?, Lucia Morales

Conference papers

This paper investigates the nature of volatility spillovers between stock returns and precious metals returns for the G-7 countries over the 1995-2006 period. We divide our sample into a number of sub periods, prior to, during and after the Asian crisis, with the objective to provide a wide analysis of the behaviour of these two markets taking into account the effects of the Asian crisis; we use EGARCH modelling which takes into account whether bad news has the same impact on volatility as good news. The results show that there is no evidence of volatility persistence from stock returns to …

Position Characteristics And Their Relationship To Selection For Promotion, Juan A. Kays

It is clear that job characteristics are key selection criteria for upward mobility. However, there are questions as to what types of position details facilitate individual objective success within an organization like the United States Air Force that relies solely on an internal labor market. While it is an individual responsibility to develop an employment plan, there are particular duties that are more desirable for continuation. This thesis looked at the professional records of a sample of officers to assess what position characteristics led to more advancement opportunities. It examined what duty experiences fared well for one measure of career …
