When i travel to India, China, and other growing nations, I am visibly struck by the living conditions I hear about, statistically, there is an estimated 4 billion people who live in poverty around the world. It's visible. It's tangible. But I am also hit, with equal impact, by the relentless and imaginative entrepreneurship I witness in these very same places by people who, from my frame of reference, have scarce resources.

Paul C. Godfrey, associate academic director of BYU’s Economic Self-Reliance Center, sat down with Stephen R. Barley, the Charles M. Pigott Professor of Management Science and Engineering at Stanford University, to discuss problems and needs associated with implementing technology in developing countries. Barley is co-director of the Center for Work, Technology, and Organization at Stanford’s School of Engineering, and the co-director of the Stanford/General Motors Collaborative Research Laboratory. China’s fast-evolving financial industry, like the country itself, defies the type of easy, sound bite-friendly synopses that foreign investors might like. It’s often unclear exactly what factors are stoking China’s remarkable economic growth engine. Or, as Winston Wenyan Ma, an investment banker who most recently worked for J.P. In Memoriam: Dr. Alfred Robert Roberts, Academy Co-Founder; Dr. Alfred Robert Roberts, Academy Co-Founder, Mark Roberts
Accounting Historians Notebook
Al Roberts was born in Paterson, NJ, on April 20, 1929 and died on May 6, 2007 at the age of 77. He joined the U.S. Army and served in Korea, Germany, and Denmark. He married Susan Curtis on August 31, 1952, in Heidelberg, Germany. They were married for 54 years. They served as short-term missionaries in the Belgian Congo from 1962 until 1964. He obtained a Ph.D. in Accounting from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa, and taught at the University of Missouri in Columbia and later at Georgia State University in Atlanta. Dr. Roberts was a key member …

Being Ethical When The Boss Is Not, Mary Uhl-Bien, Melissa K. Carsten

A missing element in discussions of ethical leadership is: What happens to enforcement of ethics if it is the managers who are behaving unethically? In this article we address this question by describing a framework of upward ethical leadership. This framework expands conceptualizations of leadership beyond top-down models to a view that considers employees to be active participants in the leadership process. Upward ethical leadership is defined as leadership behavior displayed by individuals who take action to maintain ethical standards in the face of questionable moral behaviors by higher-ups. Measuring The Costs Of Employee Turnover In Illinois Public Park And Recreation Agencies: An Exploratory Study, William R. Mckinney, Kenneth R. Bartlett, Michael A. Mulvaney

Employee turnover is an unavoidable part of most public park and recreation agencies. Agencies must become increasingly concerned with understanding the repercussions of an employee leaving an agency as they attempt to strategically assess current and future economic and human resource plans. This exploratory study considers the issue of turnover within a cost analytical framework and proposes a model for park and recreation agencies to accurately quantify their employee turnover costs. Specifically, the study incorporates Cascio’s (2000) costing model of turnover to explore the costs associated with the departing employee and the placement of a new employee. Sustainable tourism development has been recognised as the dominant paradigm for developing the tourism industry in the twenty first century. This concept gained importance in response to increasing environmental awareness and unease at the rapid use and depletion of natural resources. The United National World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) identifies sustainable tourism development as a preferred means for the future development of the industry. Indicators are an established means of achieving and measuring progress achieved towards sustainable tourism development. A Sustainable Future For Fishing On Christmas Island. A Draft Five-Year Strategy For Managing Commercial, Recreational And Charter Fishing., Department Of Fisheries Western Australia.

This draft strategy was developed by the Department of Fisheries, Western Australia, hereafter known as the “Department of Fisheries” which has responsibility for managing fish resources (within Territorial waters out to 12 nautical miles) on behalf of the Commonwealth Department of Transport and Regional Services (DoTARS), through the applied Fish Resources Management Act (FRMA) (WA)(CI) (the “Applied Act”). The Applied Act provides a legislative framework that allows for management arrangements to be developed specifically for Christmas Island. The management of fisheries in Western Australia uses an adaptive approach which balances the need for the effective management of fish stocks with …
