Introduction To Leadership Quarterly Special Issue On Leadership And Complexity, Russ Marion, Mary Uhl-Bien
Introduction To Leadership Quarterly Special Issue On Leadership And Complexity, Russ Marion, Mary Uhl-Bien
Leadership Institute: Faculty Publications
Eric Bonabeau & Christopher Meyer (2001) have devised a simple “cocktail party” game that they use to introduce complexity dynamics. Imagine a party in which everybody present is instructed to follow a simple rule: Silently select two people at random, A and B, and position yourself so that A is always between you and B. Under these conditions, the party-goers will wander around the room, forming small, transient groups and meeting a number of people. Then halfway through the party the rule changes: Instead of positioning A between yourself and B, position yourself in the middle between A and B. …
The Influence Of Online Word Of Mouth On Product Sales In Retail E-Commerce: An Empirical Investigation, Alanah Davis, Deepak Khazanchi
The Influence Of Online Word Of Mouth On Product Sales In Retail E-Commerce: An Empirical Investigation, Alanah Davis, Deepak Khazanchi
Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
The ability to exchange opinions and experiences online is known as online word of mouth (WOM). Due to the high acceptance of consumers and their apparent reliance on online WOM it is important for organizations to understand how it works and what kind of impact it has on product sales. Using the well-established notions of volume and valence to describe online WOM, we empirically evaluate the hypothesized relationship between online WOM in a retail e-commerce site and actual product sales. Our analysis of the data shows that there is a significant change in the number of products sold following the …
An Information Technology Therapy Approach To Micro-Enterprise Adoption Of Icts, Peter Wolcott, Sajda Qureshi, Mehruz Kamal
An Information Technology Therapy Approach To Micro-Enterprise Adoption Of Icts, Peter Wolcott, Sajda Qureshi, Mehruz Kamal
Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
The advent of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) has opened up new opportunities for micro-enterprises to improve their businesses. However the challenges to using ICTs are impeding these businesses from growing into the drivers for development that they can be. This suggests that a potentially important driver of development needs to be supported. This paper investigates the adoption of ICTs in eight micro-enterprises in an underserved community of Omaha, Nebraska. Following an action research study, this research provides insight into the key challenges and opportunities facing micro-enterprises in their use of ICTs to create value for their businesses. Its contribution …

Earnings Management And Its Implications, Michael D. Akers, Don E. Giacomino, Jodi L. Gissel
Accounting Faculty Research and Publications
In the wake of continuing, highly publicized financial frauds and failures, the accounting profession has placed renewed emphasis on issues related to earnings management and earnings quality. Staff Accounting Bulletin 101, Revenue Recognition in Financial Statements, which was issued in December 1999 in response to the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission report, illustrates the importance of earnings to the SEC. The SEC and the public are demanding greater assurance about the quality of earnings. Notwithstanding the grave threat that abusive earnings-management practices pose to the reliability and accuracy of financial statements, the accounting profession may be reluctant …

Coordination In Distributed Organizations, Kannan Srikanth
Coordination In Distributed Organizations, Kannan Srikanth
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Innovative work performed in a distributed fashion does not easily lend to itself either of two classic coordination strategies - anticipatory planning or ongoing rich communication. We study how innovative work that is distributed across space and time is coordinated in global software service organizations. Our findings indicate that neither coordination by plan nor coordination by feedback play a dominant role in the coordination of distributed software services delivery. Instead, we find that the firms we studied coordinate action distributed work by relying on common ground. Common ground leads to coordinated action across locations by two means: the anticipation effect …
What They Know Vs. What They Do: How Acquirers Leverage Technology Acquisitions, Phanish Puranam, Kannan Srikanth
What They Know Vs. What They Do: How Acquirers Leverage Technology Acquisitions, Phanish Puranam, Kannan Srikanth
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Existing research suggests that in acquisitions of small technology-based firms by large established firms post-merger integration both enables and hinders acquirers' efforts to leverage the technology of acquired firms. This apparent paradox can be resolved once we account for the qualitatively distinct ways in which acquirers leverage technology acquisitions. Integration helps acquirers use the acquired firm's existing knowledge as an input to their own innovation processes (leveraging what they know), but hinders their reliance on the acquired firm as an independent source of ongoing innovation (leveraging what they do). We also show that experienced acquirers are better able to mitigate …
A New Approach To The Measurement Of Polarization For Grouped Data, Eckart Bomsdorf, Clemens A. Otto
A New Approach To The Measurement Of Polarization For Grouped Data, Eckart Bomsdorf, Clemens A. Otto
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
In this paper we develop a measure of polarization for discrete distributions of non-negative grouped data. The measure takes into account the relative sizes and homogeneities of individual groups as well as the heterogeneities between all pairs of groups. It is based on the assumption that the total polarization within the distribution can be understood as a function of the polarizations between all pairs of groups. The measure allows information on existing groups within a population to be used directly to determine the degree of polarization. Thus the impact of various classifi- cations on the degree of polarization can be …

Innovation Stack - Choosing Innovations For Commercialization, Arcot Desai Narasimhalu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper describes a method for enterprises to order the innovations of interest according to a number of parameters including their own business strategy and core competencies. The method takes into account aspects such as ability to create entry barriers and complementary assets. Enterprises can now use this method to both filter out innovations that may not be of interest to them and then order the short listed or selected innovations according to their attractiveness.

A Replicable, Zero-Based Model For Marketing Curriculum Innovation, Norm A. Borin, Lynn E. Metcalf, Brian C. Tietje
Marketing
As university curriculums inevitably change, their evolution typically occurs through a series of minor incremental adjustments to individual courses that cause the curriculum to lose strategic consistency and focus. This article demonstrates a zero-based approach to marketing curriculum innovation. The authors describe forces of change that led them to completely redesign their marketing curriculum, and they chronicle a replicable process that can be used to develop and launch an extensive transformation of an existing program that is focused yet adaptive. The process includes faculty commitment, consensus, collaboration, and compromise; stakeholder input; points of distinction; unifying themes; intended learning outcomes; instructional …

Cultural Influences In Negotiations: A Four Country Comparitive Analysis, Lynn E. Metcalf, Allan Bird, Mark F. Peterson, Mahesh Shankarmahesh, Terri R. Lituchy
Marketing
Empirical work systematically comparing variations across a range of countries is scarce. A comprehensive framework having the potential to yield comparable information across countries on 12 negotiating tendencies was proposed more than 20 years ago by Weiss and Stripp; however, the framework was never operationalized or empirically tested. A review of the negotiation and cross cultural research that have accumulated over the last two decades led to refinements in the definition of the dimensions in the framework. We operationalized four dimensions in the Negotiation Orientations Framework and developed the Negotiation Orientations Inventory (NOI) to assess individual orientations on those four …

While there seems to be some competition for the College of Business study abroad program, the specialized needs that the program addresses provides …
Mapping Better Business Strategies With Gis, Tin Seong Kam
Mapping Better Business Strategies With Gis, Tin Seong Kam
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The value of location as a business measure is fast becoming an important consideration for organisations. GIS (Geographical Information Systems), with its capability to manage, display, analyse business information spatially, is emerging as a powerful location intelligence tool. In the US, Starbucks, Blockbuster, Hyundai, and thousands of other businesses use census data and GIS software to help them understand what types of people buy their products and services, and how to better market to these consumers. For example, McDonald’s in Japan uses a GIS system to overlay demographic information on maps to help identify promising new store sites. Singapore Management …

Increasing Innovation Through Identity Integration., Chi-Ying Cheng, Jeffrey Sanchez-Burks, Fiona Lee
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Innovation involves bridging existing knowledge systems from different areas. We propose that individuals who can integrate multiple social identities are better at combining knowledge systems associated with each identity, and thus exhibit higher levels of innovation. Three studies, each probing different types of social identities, provide evidence for this proposition. A laboratory experiment showed that Asian American biculturals who perceived their multiple cultural identities as compatible (high Identity Integration or high II) exhibited higher levels of innovation in creating new Asian-American recipes than biculturals who perceived their multiple cultural identities as conflicting (low Identity Integration or low II). A field …
To Trust Or To Monitor: A Dynamic Analysis, Fali Huang
To Trust Or To Monitor: A Dynamic Analysis, Fali Huang
Research Collection School Of Economics
In a principal-agent framework, principals can mitigate moral hazard problems not only through extrinsic incentives such as monitoring, but also through agents’ intrinsic trustworthiness. Their relative usage, however, changes over time and varies across societies. This paper attempts to explain this phenomenon by endogenizing agent trustworthiness as a response to potential returns. When monitoring becomes relatively cheaper over time, agents acquire lower trustworthiness, which may actually drive up the overall governance cost in society. Across societies, those giving employees lower weights in choosing governance methods tend to have higher monitoring intensities and lower trust. These results are consistent with the …

Several studies have addressed the process of taking ideas to markets but few have shared the experiences of start up companies that have reexamined their product strategies and repositioned their products and services for better revenues and profits. This paper reports the efforts related to repositioning of XID technologies, a start up company, into new markets while continuing to exploit its core technical competencies.

Designing The Value Curve For Your Next Innovation, Arcot Desai Narasimhalu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper introduces an additional feature to the strategy canvas and value curve that will make innovation designers more effective. The new feature is to let the innovators carry out the designs of their new innovations taking into account both the cost of improving the quality of a parameter that the users value highly and the savings accrued from the drop in provisioning for parameters that users place less emphasis in an innovation.

Understanding Chinese Business Behaviour: A Historical Perspective, Taieb Hafsi, Li Yan
Understanding Chinese Business Behaviour: A Historical Perspective, Taieb Hafsi, Li Yan
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The behaviour of Chinese business has been studied by a variety of strategic management scholars (see in particular Hafsi and Tian, 2005; Peng, 2006; Peng and Heat, 1996). Most of these studies rely on traditional data gathering, either in the form of interviews or published data banks. Very little attention has been given to history as a determinant of strategic behaviour. In this paper, we propose that the cognitive orientation of Chinese managers is dominated by their knowledge and understanding of Chinese history. We take the Three Kingdoms historic novel as a proxy to history to derive basic behavioral norms …

Investing In Hedge Funds When Returns Are Predictable, Doron Avramov, Robert Kosowski, Narayan Y. Naik, Melvyn Teo
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This paper evaluates hedge fund performance through portfolio strategies that incorporate predictability in managerial skills, fund risk loadings, and benchmark returns. Incorporating predictability substantially improves performance for the entire universe of hedge funds as well as various subsets based on investment styles. Such out-performance is strongest during market downturns when the marginal utility of consumption is relatively high. Moreover, the major source of investment profitability is predictability in managerial skills. In particular, long-only strategies that incorporate predictable skills outperform their Fung and Hsieh (2004) benchmarks by over 12 percent per year. The economic value of predictability obtains for various rebalancing …
