Livestock keeping is critical for many of the poor in the developing world, often contributing to multiple livelihood objectives and offering pathways out of poverty. Livestock keeping also affects an indispensable asset of the poor, their human capital, through its impact on their own nutrition and health. This paper outlines the linkages between livestock keeping and the physical well-being of the poor, and examines a number of commonly held beliefs that misrepresent livestock development issues related to these linkages. These beliefs limit the scope of intervention programs to promote livestock and limit their potential contribution to poverty reduction. Recognition of …

There are two sports where upsets these days are as rare as a Cubs’ World Series victory. In golf and tennis, it is nearly always Tiger, Tiger, Tiger and Roger, Roger, Roger. These two athletes have established an astounding dominance in their sports as both enter the prime of their careers. They are both on pace to rewrite the record books and end their careers as the greatest players in the history of their sports.

A Two-Order Effect Model Of It Business Value: Theoretical Development And Empirical Test, Vishnu Vinekar

A new model for IT Business Value is proposed and empirically validated from longitudinal panel data. We posit that IT has a first-order effect that includes automating, and a second-order effect that is more dependent on informating. Our empirical results demonstrate that IT's contribution to firm performance is mediated via its impacts on productivity, which corresponds to the first-order effect. We further developed and validated a complex but parsimonious moderated-mediation model to show that these paths to business value from IT vary depending on industry information intensity, environmental dynamism, and environmental munificence.

The Value Relevance Of Earnings And The Prediction Of One-Year-Ahead Cash Flows, Oliver Kim, Steve C. Lim, Taewoo Park

In this paper we examine the validity of using one-year-ahead cash flows prediction tests as a substitute for the value relevance test of earnings. We show theoretically that the R2 of the cash flows prediction regression is contaminated by the presence of (1) noise in the cash flows and (2) spurious, i.e., value-unrelated, correlation between one-year-ahead cash flows and current earnings. We test if either of the above two factors contribute to the result of Kim and Kross (2005) that the ability of earnings to predict one-year-ahead cash flows has increased over the recent decades, in contrast to the evidence …

The current study of wireless local area networks (WLAN) adoption in educational institutions is motivated by three reasons. First, most students are exposed to information technology when they are at K-12 schools. Indeed, educational institutions represent the largest segment in the WLAN market in the United States in terms of the number of adopters. Second, WLAN requires a substantial financial investment before it can enable an "anytime, anywhere" learning environment, and may thereby aggravate the digital divide between rich and poor schools. This paper analyzes the actuarial adequacy of PBGC in providing insurance coverage to employees participating in single employer, defined benefit pension plans. The first part of this investigation examines the micro and macro economic factors that impact the financial stability and actuarial viability of PBGC. A second section discusses externalities that may contribute to suboptimal premiums and adverse selection for PBGC. A linear control model is introduced to analyze the most effective way PBGC might use its $100 million credit line with the Department of the Treasury. The context for regional economic cooperation is the globalization that is driving the economic processes. From 1990 to 2003 global GDP increased 1.7 times while global trade and FDI increased 2.2 and 3 times respectively. Globalization has contributed to economic growth through several channels.

Gervase Bushe, management and organisation studies professor in the Segal Graduate School of Business at Simon Fraser University in Canada, is also a consultant and an award winning author in the field of organisational change and development. In July 2007, Bushe was one of the main speakers at the Seventh International Conference on Knowledge, Culture and Change in Organisations, held at the Singapore Management University. How Do Word-Of-Mouth Reviews Affect Product Sales? Applying The Stock Market Analogy To Online Stores, Knowledge@Smu

Online word-of-mouth communication -- such as product reviews by consumers -- has become a major information source about product quality. Singapore Management University information systems professor Nan Hu and his team investigated both quantitative and qualitative aspects of online reviews using Amazon.com as their study base. They found that, besides review scores, consumers do pay attention to other contextual information such as a reviewer’s reputation and exposure. Hu’s research also showed that the longer an item is on the market, the smaller the impact of online reviews on sales.

The growing emphasis on improving performance in business school programs relies on a continuous improvement model designed for manufacturing and business service organizations. However, the complexity of learning assessment and the lack of expertise in learning processes suggests that change is needed to adapt this model for application in higher education. We propose integrating a research basis into the current continuous improvement model that will result in educational and instructional processes shaped by scientific research. Issues associated with implementation are discussed.

As a graduate student attempting to integrate feminist principles into my academic endeavors, I eagerly entered the research field to examine how women business owners who feel a conflict between feminism and capitalism enact their everyday lives.
