International Trade, Consumer Behavior And Trust: Factors Affecting Agribusinesses In Developing Countries, Ronald Hampton, Ingrid Fromm, Bonani Nyhodo Jan 2007

International Trade, Consumer Behavior And Trust: Factors Affecting Agribusinesses In Developing Countries, Ronald Hampton, Ingrid Fromm, Bonani Nyhodo

Department of Marketing: Faculty Publications

With the increasing complexity of global food systems, producers in developing countries are faced with challenges associated with market access to developed and other developing countries. There is clear evidence that the fastest growing developing countries are the ones engaging in trade and participating in the global market. The difficulty for developing countries, especially Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in those countries is the logistics and agreements needed to enter international markets and benefit from trade. Global production networks are becoming extremely complex. Arms-length trade is now confined to commodities with low returns, thus access to high-income yielding activities requires …

Development Of A Global Measure Of Job Embeddedness And Integration Into A Traditional Model Of Voluntary Turnover, Craig Crossley, Rebecca J. Bennett, Steve M. Jex, Jennifer L. Burnfield Jan 2007

Development Of A Global Measure Of Job Embeddedness And Integration Into A Traditional Model Of Voluntary Turnover, Craig Crossley, Rebecca J. Bennett, Steve M. Jex, Jennifer L. Burnfield

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Recent research on job embeddedness has found that both on- and off-the-job forces can act to bind people to their jobs. The present study extended this line of research by examining how job embeddedness may be integrated into a traditional model of voluntary turnover. This study also developed and tested a global, reflective measure of job embeddedness that overcomes important limitations and serves as a companion to the original composite measure. Results of this longitudinal study found that job embeddedness predicted voluntary turnover beyond job attitudes and core variables from traditional models of turnover. Results also found that job embeddedness …

Changes In Ceo Compensation Structure And The Impact On Firm Performance Following Ceo Turnover, David W. Blackwell, Donna M. Dudney, Kathleen A. Farrell Jan 2007

Changes In Ceo Compensation Structure And The Impact On Firm Performance Following Ceo Turnover, David W. Blackwell, Donna M. Dudney, Kathleen A. Farrell

Department of Finance: Faculty Publications

We document changes in compensation structure following CEO turnover and relate them to future performance. Compared to outgoing CEOs, incoming CEOs derive a significantly greater percentage of their compensation from option grants and new stock grants. The voluntary turnover sample shows similar changes in compensation structure while the forced turnover sample results suggest that new stock grants drive the significant increase in incentive compensation following turnover. Post-turnover performance is positively associated with new stock grants as a percentage of total compensation in the full sample and when analyzing forced and voluntary turnovers separately. We find limited evidence that future operating …

Radical Change Accidentally: The Emergence And Amplification Of Small Change, Donde Ashmos Plowman, Lakami T. Baker, Tammy E. Beck, Mukta Kulkarni, Stephanie Thomas Solansky, Deandra Villarreal Travis Jan 2007

Radical Change Accidentally: The Emergence And Amplification Of Small Change, Donde Ashmos Plowman, Lakami T. Baker, Tammy E. Beck, Mukta Kulkarni, Stephanie Thomas Solansky, Deandra Villarreal Travis

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

A decision to offer breakfast to homeless people led to radical change in a church and its environment. Existing theories of change do not fully explain observations from our qualitative study; however, complexity theory constructs suggest how and why such change emerged. We offer four key findings. First, the radical change was unintended, emergent, and slow. Second, destabilizing conditions helped small changes to emerge and become radical. Third, subsequent actions amplified an initial small change and, though not intended to do so, promoted radical change. Finally, the dynamic interaction of amplifying actions, contextual conditions, and small changes led to continuous …

A New Approach For Evaluating The Order Fulfillment Process Options Of B2c Horizontal Portals Using Dea (Data Envelopment Analysis), Tapati Bandopadhyay, Pradeep Kumar Jan 2007

A New Approach For Evaluating The Order Fulfillment Process Options Of B2c Horizontal Portals Using Dea (Data Envelopment Analysis), Tapati Bandopadhyay, Pradeep Kumar

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

By using the traditional statistical or operations research methods for deciding the product-delivery logistics, the portal companies are not using their competitive advantages on being more e-enabled, informed and computationally able than their traditional counterparts. In this paper, we show some typical characteristics of the portals like their handling of a huge range of goods in terms of transactional values or volumes. Subsequently, we have identified three types of generic product-delivery logistics of the portals with various intermediate entities or trading partners. Then, a completely different approach using an extreme point method rather than the traditional central-tendency-based statistical methods has …

Personal Data Collection Via The Internet: The Role Of Privacy Sensitivity And Technology Trust, Susan K. Lippert, Paul Michael Swiercz

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Policy makers and researchers from a wide range of perspectives have expressed concern about the interplay between privacy rights and information exchanges via the Internet. Of particular interest has been the challenge of protecting sensitive personal information. In this paper, we assert that user willingness to share sensitive data is an area of critical concern and requires additional investigation. In an effort to enrich the dialogue on the question of voluntary sharing of sensitive personal data via the Internet, we present a model showcasing the relationship between personal data sharing, privacy sensitivity, and technology trust and discuss how organizations can …

A Predictive Analytic Model For Value Chain Management, Joseph O. Chan

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Value chain management has gone through various stages of automation, integration and optimization in the past decades. While an optimization model for value chain deals with business scenarios under known circumstances, a predictive value chain model deals with probable circumstances in the future. Predictive analytics is succeeding optimization in the evolution of technologies supporting value chain management. This paper proposes a forward looking value creation model that combines the important concepts of value chain management and predictive analytics. An enterprise model for value chain predictive analytics that facilitates the convergence of information, operations and analytics is presented.

Analysis Of Competitive And Cooperative Technology Strategies Of Electronics Firms In The Greater China Region, Chung-Shing Lee, Kuei-Hsien Niu, Jonathan C. Ho

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

This paper integrates several theoretical perspectives to discuss the attributes of successful implementing strategic alliances and supply chain management strategies in high-technology industries. A multiple- case study of Taiwanese and Chinese electronics industries is presented to demonstrate how and why different firms apply different technology strategies in alliances and supply chain formations. Due to intense global competition, technological integration, and product life-cycle time compression, Taiwanese and Chinese high-technology firms are suggested to formulate and implement a coherent technology strategy to enhance their global competitiveness. By applying an integrated framework based on major theoretical perspectives studying the formulation and implementation of …

Integrating It-Enabled Social Networks With Transaction Cost Economics And The Resource Based View Of The Firm, Ganesh D. Bhatt, Jatinder N. D. Gupta, Sushil K. Sharma Jan 2007

Integrating It-Enabled Social Networks With Transaction Cost Economics And The Resource Based View Of The Firm, Ganesh D. Bhatt, Jatinder N. D. Gupta, Sushil K. Sharma

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Prior research has mostly focused on transaction cost economics (TCE) to interpret the effect of information systems (IS) on organizational governance structures. A TCE based approach predicts that information technology (IT) will lead to increased use of electronic markets to coordinate economic transactions from electronic hierarchies. However, there is contradictory evidence in the literature regarding the rise and importance of cooperative relationships, joint ventures, and value-added partnerships integrated through information systems. To reconcile these contradictions, this paper analyzes the effect of IT on governance structures based on the TCE, social network theory, and the resource based view (RBV) of the …

In Search Of Factors To Online Game Addiction And Its Implications, Yangil Park, Jeng-Chung V. Chen

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Research has explored online users who are hooked on Internet applications such as chat rooms, web surfing, and interactive games. Online game addiction is one of the problems arisen from the use of the Internet. This study is motivated by a causal connection found from previous research of computer game addiction. The study describes two typical types of online games and looks further into the causes of the addiction by using two main theories. We also propose research hypotheses and discuss possible implications of online game addiction.

An Examination Of Internet Effectiveness For Non-Work Activities, Pruthikrai Mahatanankoon, Tim Klaus, H. Joseph Wen Jan 2007

An Examination Of Internet Effectiveness For Non-Work Activities, Pruthikrai Mahatanankoon, Tim Klaus, H. Joseph Wen

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

The Internet is frequently used for non-work activities. When used for these purposes, the effectiveness of the Internet in accomplishing these leisure activities becomes an important consideration. Research literature has remained relatively silent in regards to the examination of accomplishing non-work tasks through the Internet. This study uses Davis’ Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) as a basis to predict different types of common user web activities—entertainment, communicating, and information searching. Using Structured Equation Modeling, this paper examines the effectiveness of the Internet in accomplishing non-work activities. In this study, the overall analysis of the survey data suggests that perceived ease of …

Internet Entrepreneurship And Economic Growth, Gerald V. Post, John F. Pfaff Jan 2007

Internet Entrepreneurship And Economic Growth, Gerald V. Post, John F. Pfaff

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

This paper looks at national attempts to promote economic growth through the Internet. Growth can be driven through service exports or internally through increased service transactions and fostering entrepreneurship. India is often held as an example of service exports, but economic statistics show that India might not be a good example for other nations because net service trade is negative and wages have been economically distorted. Ultimately, developing nations need to find internal growth models. Internal growth could be driven though increased consumption due to improved information, or increased investment expenditures from infrastructure investments.

The prominence of the role of project manager and adoption of formal PM tools/techniques by IT departments generally increase with the sizes of the institutions. The importance of having a project plan is recognized by all sizes of institutions of …

An Analysis Of The D Programming Language, Sumanth Yenduri, Louise Perkins, Md. Sarder Jan 2007

An Analysis Of The D Programming Language, Sumanth Yenduri, Louise Perkins, Md. Sarder

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

The C language and its derivatives have been some of the dominant higher-level languages used, and the maturity has stemmed several newer languages that, while still relatively young, possess the strength of decades of trials and experimentation with programming concepts. While C++ was a major step in the advancement from procedural to object-oriented programming (with a backbone of C), several problems existed that prompted the development of new languages. This paper focuses on one such language: D. D was designed as a potential successor to C++, supporting most features of C++’s class design and modifications intended to ease common program …

Comparing The Prioritization Of Erp System Effectiveness Measures By Organizational Actors: A Focus On It Professionals And Business Managers, Princely Ifinedo

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Modern organizations adopt Enterprise Resource Planning systems (ERP) to integrate their organizational data resources into unified systems. Researchers tend to concentrate on ERP implementation issues with only a handful studying ERP system effectiveness or success in adopting organizations. In fact, none has studied how key organizational actors prioritize or rank relevant measures or items related to the effectiveness of such systems. This study is designed to fill this gap in research as it aims at investigating how two organizational stakeholder groups, i.e. information technology (IT) professionals and business managers prioritize relevant measures related to ERP systems effectiveness. Using surveys in …

Improving Credit Card Operations With Data Mining Techniques, Malini Krishnamurthi Jan 2007

Improving Credit Card Operations With Data Mining Techniques, Malini Krishnamurthi

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Consumer credit is ubiquitous and lending poses credit risk – the risk of economic loss due to the failure of a borrower to repay according to the terms of his or her contract with the lender. And so, managing credit risk entails estimating the potential ability of borrowers to repay their debts. Researchers have sought to identify factors that contribute to consumer risk, by using quantitative models. However, the presence of data mining techniques to identify credit risk cannot be ignored. There is a paucity of research to demonstrate the use of data mining techniques in this context, and such …

Internet Industry Competition Dynamics: Peering Limitations, Exposure, And Counter Strategies, Seungjae Shin, Jack E. Tucci Jan 2007

Internet Industry Competition Dynamics: Peering Limitations, Exposure, And Counter Strategies, Seungjae Shin, Jack E. Tucci

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

The Internet industry is vertically integrated with Internet Backbone Providers (IBPs) and Internet Service Providers (ISPs.) Although there are many ISPs and IBPs in each stream, both markets are considered independent oligopolies in that there are a few dominant competitors in each market. It is generally accepted that the Internet industry structure has evolved into a four-tier hierarchical structure. The synergistic and codependent nature of the Internet industry is the key element in understanding the competitive environment in which both IBP’s and ISP’s cooperate. Peering is an efficient way to exchange traffic freely within the access tier, nevertheless competitive constraints …

Value-At-Risk In It Services Contracts, Robert J. Kauffman, Ryan Sougstad Jan 2007

Value-At-Risk In It Services Contracts, Robert J. Kauffman, Ryan Sougstad

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As information systems (IS) and technology solutions become increasingly service-driven, managers are faced with the task of choosing parameters such as service-levels, pricing, and contract duration. Information technology (IT) services vendors manage portfolios of contracts in which parameters, decided at inception, are often subject to future risks. The contract profit maximization decision may adversely affect the risk position of the firm's portfolio of services contracts. We propose a model to inform vendors on setting optimal parameters for IS contracts subject to acceptable levels of risk. The analytic model presented draws from IS economics research and the principles of value-at-risk (VaR) …

Abnormal Trading Volume, Stock Returns And The Momentum Effects, Ying Zheng Jan 2007

Abnormal Trading Volume, Stock Returns And The Momentum Effects, Ying Zheng

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This paper intends to study the intermediate-term momentum and long-term reversal of stock prices by investigating the informational role of unusual trading volume for winner and loser stocks. I argue that unusual trading volume has different implications for winner and loser stocks. Specifically, high trading volume for losers is driven by purchases made by informed investors; while high trade volume for winners could be driven by either information or representativeness bias or both. The arguments are tested in the paper by showing that in the short run, losers/winners with high abnormal trading volume outperform losers/winners with low abnormal trading volume; …

Do Warrants Lead The Underlying Stocks And Index Futures?, Ying Kui Lin Jan 2007

Do Warrants Lead The Underlying Stocks And Index Futures?, Ying Kui Lin

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The lead-lag relation between options and stocks has been a subject of controversy for years with conflicting findings in the literature. In this thesis, we present an intuitive method to examine the lead-lag relation, if any, in the tick-by-tick data of covered warrants and their underlying stocks or underlying index futures. Our method is non-parametric and needs no assumptions which are critical to the regression-based methods. We find that the electronically traded warrants do not lead stocks or index futures; the movements in the warrants' quotes provide little information about the quotes of the underlying stocks or index futures. Instead, …

Interest Rate Uncertainty And Stock Market Volatility, Jincai Xu Jan 2007

Interest Rate Uncertainty And Stock Market Volatility, Jincai Xu

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The reason for volatility changing over time is still open. As stated in the extant papers uncertainty of Macroeconomic variable plays more important role in explaining the time varying of volatility than the volatility of Macroeconomic variable itself. In this paper we illustrate this with exploring the relationship between stock market volatility and the Interest Uncertainty. In the paper, we take the uncertainty of the decision of FOMC meeting as the uncertainty of interest rate. As we know, asset price is a tool for people to express their belief about the state of the economy, when uncertainty is high, a …

On The Calibration Of The Libor Market Model, U Lagunzad Demelinda Jan 2007

On The Calibration Of The Libor Market Model, U Lagunzad Demelinda

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This thesis presents a study of LIBOR market model calibration. In particular, the study builds on the prevailing calibration methodologies in an attempt to find a method that simultaneously recovers implied volatility and forward rate correlations structures from market prices of plain vanilla options. In order to ensure that complex derivative pricing and hedging requirements are jointly addressed, the study extends the performance analysis of calibration methods from a static level of goodness-of-fit with market prices test, to a dynamic level of approximation to next period's LIBOR (London Interbank Offer Rate) dynamics when tested on a series of market prices. …

It’S Sho Time! Short-Sale Price-Tests And Market Quality, Karl B. Diether, Kuan-Hui Lee, Ingrid M. Werner Jan 2007

It’S Sho Time! Short-Sale Price-Tests And Market Quality, Karl B. Diether, Kuan-Hui Lee, Ingrid M. Werner

Faculty Publications

We examine the effects of the SEC mandated temporary suspension of short-sale price-tests for a set of Pilot securities. While short-selling activity increased both for NYSE and NASDAQ-listed Pilot stocks, returns and volatility at the daily level are unaffected. NYSE-listed Pilot stocks experience more symmetric trading patterns and a slight increase in spreads and intraday volatility after the suspension while there is a smaller effect on market quality for NASDAQlisted Pilot stocks. The results suggest that the effect of the price-tests on market quality can largely be attributed to the distortions in order flow created by the price-tests in the …

Young Adults And Health Insurance Coverage: A Description Of Trends, Christina Lynn Hansen Jan 2007

Young Adults And Health Insurance Coverage: A Description Of Trends, Christina Lynn Hansen

Honors Program Theses

Such high rates of uninsurance are due to many factors, but the transition from dependence to independence is a major cause of uninsurance within young adults. Affecting all classes and groups of young adults, it is shown that being in low-income families, a member of a minority group, and being male all increase chances of uninsurance (Callahan & Cooper, 2004).

Sarbanes-Oxley - From Idea To Implementation: A Look At The Impact On Public Companies, Stephanie Lynn Johnson Jan 2007

Sarbanes-Oxley - From Idea To Implementation: A Look At The Impact On Public Companies, Stephanie Lynn Johnson

Honors Program Theses

While the new requirements of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act might seem like an excellent step towards improving the honesty, integrity, and reputation of the corporate accounting world, the actual implementation of these regulations is proving to be quite a headache for public companies and their auditors. Congress developed new rules for publicly held companies, but they failed to provide any guidelines or best practices for companies to follow in the compliance process. In addition, the costs of implementing the various provisions of SOX are adding up to be much higher than originally anticipated, creating a burden for smaller public companies. This …

The Dynamics Of Social Responsibility: Processes, Positions, And Paths In The Oil And Gas Industry, Paul C. Godfrey Jan 2007

The Dynamics Of Social Responsibility: Processes, Positions, And Paths In The Oil And Gas Industry, Paul C. Godfrey

Faculty Publications

I use corporate strategy concepts and tools to focus on the dynamics of firm social initiatives and actions over time. I examine the different paths and positions taken by firms, and the processes that may underlie such paths and positions. My sample comprises 19 firms in the oil and gas industry, and covers the decade from 1991-2000. I use an exploratory approach that mixes qualitative and quantitative cluster analysis as the primary tools to examine this industry, and to isolate and examine distinct social responsibility positions and paths taken by these firms. I also provide evidence about which theoretical processes …
