Tackling The Monday Morning Quarterback: Applications Of Hindsight Bias In Decision-Making Settings, T. A. Louie, Mahesh N. Rajan, Robert E. Sibley

Extant research has focused largely on what causes hindsight distortion. In contrast, this work examines applied aspects related to the bias in decision-making environments. A conceptual framework is provided and recent real–world examples are presented to outline how decision makers—and those who observe them—show hindsight effects. Then, both negative and positive consequences of the bias are outlined. Strategies are presented to reduce negative effects that occur when decision makers show hindsight distortion. Finally, because it is often not possible to avoid or to correct others' hindsight–tainted evaluations, suggestions for coping with the bias are discussed.

In this paper we discuss the rationale behind biopharmaceutical outsourcing. We then discuss the benefits, challenges, current trends and market opportunities. From January 2005, India has agreed to comply with the product patent protection in accordance with the obligation under the TRIPS Agreement of the WTO. This has created new opportunities as well as challenges for the Indian biopharmaceutical companies. We analyze the value proposition of India as a suitable destination for outsourcing in biopharmaceutical industry in this new business environment. The rapid emergence of file sharing networks has enabled easier information dissemination and product access to potential consumers. At the same time, copyright protection technologies for securing digital products have been compromised repeatedly. To analyze the ensuing impacts on the market landscape for music products (a digital good), we develop a stochastic model of distribution of music album longevity on the Billboard Chart. The present research proposes a general model of Transnational Teams (TNTs) to investigate how value placed on cultural diversity, cultural adaptation, communication quality, and trust affect the performance of TNTs and their interaction to each other. TNTs contribute to decisions about a firm's total portfolio of transnational interests, global brands and products, organizational configuration, and global sourcing strategy. Qualitative and quantitative methods are applied in this study of thirty members of TNTs from diverse teams. Equity asset managers within professional investment advisory firms will often manage both discretionary fee-based accounts as well as open-ended mutual funds - using comparable domestic equity investment disciplines. When retail and institutional investors choose between these products, their decision often hinges on performance and portfolio customization. After reconciling each product’s gross performance for calculation methodology, management and trading costs, and systematic risk measures, we find that concurrently-managed (where the same personnel manage a separately managed account and an open-ended mutual fund over the same time period using identical investment disciplines) small-cap separately managed accounts outperform small-cap actively-managed open-ended mutual funds …

Improving Call Center Operations Using Performance-Based Routing Strategies, J. Stanley, R. Saltzman, Vijay Mehrotra

The article presents a simulation study of performance-based call routing strategies using a variety of routing rules based on historic data such as average handling time and first call resolution rate. We demonstrate the relative benefits of various performance-based call routing strategies using actual data from a financial call center. In particular, our modeling results indicate that call routing based on adjusted average handle time (AAHT) and z-scores of AAHT are two strategies that can substantially improve overall call center performance and customer satisfaction.

Project VG 04018 ‘Enhancing fertiliser use efficiency for transplanted vegetables’ showed that spraying highly concentrated solutions containing nitrogen over newly transplanted vegetable seedlings for between 14 and 21 days after planting can increase marketable yields by as much as 300% compared to other methods of fertiliser application. Crops that this method has been successfully tested on in this study by the W.A. Department of Agriculture and Food include iceberg and Cos lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, Chinese cabbage (wombok), celery and cabbage.

In particular, this project will assess consumer perceptions of stadium naming rights as a means for determining its effectiveness as a marketing approach. The thesis examined the differences between the Chinese market, a fast-growing emerging market, and that of the United States, a well-known developed market. In order to understand the overall performance of the Chinese stock market, the research compared the risk and returns characteristics of Chinese stock markets using the S & P 500 Index for the 2000-2005 period. Findings show that significant differences exist between the Chinese and the U.S. markets. The thesis also attempted to identify the characteristics of the Chinese markets that hinder their efficiency.

This study investigates the relationship of managers’ and direct reports’ perceptions of leader-member exchange (LMX) on organizational citizenship behaviors (OCB). LMX was conceptualized as a multi-dimensional construct (Liden & Maslyn, 1998). Multiple regression analysis of data from 107 manager-direct report dyads of human resource development professionals indicated several relationships between LMX and OCB. Analysis indicated direct reports’ engagement in altruism OCB was related to managers’ perceptions of contribution dimension of LMX which accounted for a significant amount of variance above and beyond the control variables (position, organizational and dyad tenure). The purpose of the study was two-fold: (1) Do small group settings benefit students? (2) How can professors enhance the group environment through task related instructions? A 33-item Group Learning on Development Survey (GOLDS) was used to integrate Bruce Tuckman’s developmental model with Benjamin Bloom’s cognitive domain. For centuries, accounting was a manual process. Starting in the late 1800s, a series of technological innovations emerged that not only changed the way the accounting process was conducted but dramatically changed the workplace, the workforce, the information provided, and the accounting profession itself. By 1930, most major US companies had adopted mechanical accounting as a more efficient way of processing accounting information. This paper examines the historical development and influence of mechanical accounting in the U.S. from 1880 to 1930.
