Professional Integrity In Higher Education: Behind The Green Curtain In The Land Of Oz, Gordon A. Crews, Angela D. Crews

Criminal Justice Faculty Research

This article discusses concerns related to professional integrity in academics and to the use of collegiality as an informal criterion for employment and evaluation decisions. We question the nature of the educational enterprise and the academic environment within which both students and faculty operate. We use the AAUP Statement on Professional Ethics to guide our examination of collegiality, and the three traditional areas of faculty evaluation (teaching, scholarship, and service), as they relate to professional integrity. We discuss potential pitfalls in situations involving integrity concerns, and suggest that the use of collegiality in professional decisions is more prevalent and potentially …

Federal law establishes scheduling requirements for government employees, generally requiring federal agencies to set regular work hours over a traditional Monday through Friday workweek. These requirements, along with provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), impede flexible work arrangements (FWAs) for federal employees.1 The Federal Employees Flexible and Compressed Work Schedules Act (“FEFCWA”) removes these legal barriers for two specific types of alternative work schedules (AWS): flexible work schedules (FWS) and compressed work schedules (CWS). As the waves of change caused by the U.S. Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 subside, the next force likely to sweep over organizations is the need to implement enterprise risk management (ERM). ERM has sparked a paradigm shift by encouraging organizations to build a comprehensive risk strategy into their business operations and spurring internal auditors to move from a primarily control-based approach to a predominantly risk-based approach.

Enacted in 2001, the New South Wales Carers’ Responsibilities Act (“CRA”) prohibits discrimination against employees with caregiver responsibilities and provides access to reasonable flexible work arrangements. Under this law, employees have the right to request accommodations for their carer responsibilities, and employers have an affirmative obligation to consider and grant reasonable accommodations that do not impose an unjustifiable hardship. The affirmative accommodation requirement extends to requests for flexible working hours, working from home (telecommuting), part-time work, and job-share arrangements.

Management, HR and Information Systems

The music industry has repeatedly expressed concerns over potentially devastating impacts of online music sharing. Initial attempts to control online file sharing have been primarily through consumer education and legal action against the operators of networks that facilitated file sharing. Recent legal action against individual file sharers marked an unprecedented shift in the industry’s strategy. The focus now is on well-publicized legal threats and actions on a relatively small group of individuals to discourage overall music file sharing. To determine the resulting impact of these legal threats, we passively tracked online file-sharing behavior of over 2,000 individuals. We found that …

Slocum and Sriram's [2001] study of teaching accounting history found a decline from 1985-1997 in the number of courses with historical content at the doctoral and undergraduate level. Is this development a singular event for accounting or an example of what is happening in other business disciplines? Our study presents the results of a longitudinal and cross-disciplinary survey of members of AACSB International to determine the current state of the teaching of history in business schools. We find a similar decline in other business disciplines and offer suggestions about the relevance of history and steps that might be taken to …

The creation of an attractive textbook of accounting history in Japan yields a rich harvest of information in one package. The book, Kindai Kaikei-seiritsu-shi ("Accounting History - the formation of modern accounting," 257 pp., Dobunkan Publishing Corp., Tokyo, 2005) is edited by Yosihiro Hira-bayashi the former president of the Accounting History Association (AHA) in Japan whose 240 members comprise roughly 15% of the Japanese Accounting Association. Hirabayashi composed both the "Prologue - The significance of accounting history" and the "Epilogue - How to study accounting history." Living in Chicago and working as a traveling salesman in the 1920s-1930s, Duncan Hines had a hobby—visiting and assessing restaurants. He said he was looking for “standout attractions in the culinary department.” His hobby eventually made this native of Bowling Green “America’s foremost food authority” and one of the most recognized Kentuckians of the twentieth century. This article traces the biography of the culinary entrepreneur from his early years in Bowling Green to his successful publishing ventures, and finally to the phenomenal marketing strategy that was used to create one of America’s most enduring and endearing brands.

Chilean democracy, for more than sixteen years, has been on a steady path of democratic consolidation. A problem that remains, however, is the profound inability of societal actors to affect change within the new democratic framework. Participation in groups of collective action is exceptionally low and the country has suffered a crisis of social capital en the last ten years.

Loaning Health: The Effectiveness Of Microfinance As An Hiv/Aids Intervention Method In Kibera Slums, Lara Berlin

Three of the major societal issues facing Kenya are poverty, gender inequalities, and HIV/AIDS, each of which acts as a catalyst for the others. In the last twenty years, microfinance has been used as an intervention method combating poverty and women’s disempowerment. As such, this study examines the effectiveness of using microfinance as an HIV/AIDS intervention method in the Kibera slums of Nairobi, Kenya. The research is primarily based upon interviews with Kibera residents and members of microfinance organizations. The findings indicate that most Kibera residents believe microfinance is the best method of reducing the spread of AIDS, especially when …
