American Social Contract: Retirement, Insurance And Financial Viability, Hedayeh Samavati, Carolyn Stumph, David Dilts

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

Since the election of 2004, one burning question has dominated any discussion of the long-term macroeconomic policy of this country. That question is: "will social security remain viable in its current form?" Economists weigh in on a spectrum that ranges from the opinion that social security is not in any trouble to the opinion that social security payments are in immediate peril. This research indicates that, while relatively minor changes of the type the country has undertaken for the last two decades may be necessary, social security is by no means in what any intelligent analyst would consider peril.

What makes an executive effective? Are effective executives born with some unique abilities and skills? Or do they learn and practice some special strategies that make them superior? This paper explores whether effective executives are born or made, and analyzes some leadership studies done over the years. Also, it suggests an integrative model of effective leadership that organizations may use to develop and enhance better leaders and that individuals may use to improve their organizational leadership.

Recent studies have shown that the contribution of small firms to employment and GDP is increasing. A large amount of work has also established the significance of social and economic variables for entrepreneurial decisions. Very little is known, however, about how government policies and programs influence entrepreneurial activity, and whether these effects are consistent across countries. Using original data from a representative sample of 10,000 individuals and from more than 300 open-ended interviews in 10 countries, this article provides some suggestive evidence that government intervention aimed at enhancing the underlying environment of entrepreneurial decisions may be more effective than intervention …

Minority women continue to make significant gains in economic activity, particularly as entrepreneurs through the creation of small businesses. Despite this increased role in small business activity and an admirable rate of success, minority women-owned businesses continue to experience problems in acquiring capital. This difficulty, which some have attributed to discriminatory practices, forces a large number of these businesses to rely on governmental support programs for assistance in meeting their capital needs. Arkansas is one of many states in this country that is experiencing an education funding crisis. Despite the fact that states have started taking more responsibility for the funding of their public schools since the mid-1950s, litigation over education funding has occurred in almost every state in the United States. Litigation in Arkansas began in the 1980s and continues today with the Lake View case. Several alternatives have been proposed to reform the state's education system and its methods of funding, including school consolidation, raising taxes, and adopting an education-supporting lottery. Mad Money has become one of the most popular shows on CNBC. The host, Jim Cramer, has an outlandish style and personality that viewers find intoxicating. Cramer's goal for the show is to make people money. Does he succeed? This paper finds that investors can expect to gain above-average, risk adjusted returns by following Cramer's stock recommendations and trading accordingly. These findings challenge the semi-strong form market hypothesis. According to this hypothesis investors should not recognize gains trading on public information since it states that the market has already adjusted prices for that information. Partial least squares analysis is a multivariate statistical technique that allows comparison between multiple response variables and multiple explanatory variables. Partial least squares is one of a number of covariance-based statistical methods which are often referred to as structural equation modeling or SEM. It was designed to deal with multiple regression when data has small sample, missing values, or multicollinearity. Partial least squares regression has been demonstrated on both real data and in simulations (Garthwaite, 1994, Tennenhaus, 1998). With a grueling practice schedule and a dedicated group of athletes, a coach can hone the squad into a cohesive unit, poised for any competition. This study broadens the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) proposed by Davis (1989) by incorporating multiple dimensions of cultural attributes into the model. The study also specifies and expands on the factors that may influence faculty members' computer literacy and computer usage in a developing country, namely Jordan.

Allen and Saunders (1992) document abnormal behavior of bank assets and liabilities at the turn-of-the-quarter and attribute it to window dressing by banks. Using different methods we re-visit bank turn-of-the-quarter balance sheet activity. We also examine quarter-end changes in the effective fed funds rates and fed funds rate standard deviations. We confirm the presence of turn-of-the-quarter activity on bank balance sheets and in the fed funds market. However, we conclude that the turn-of-the-quarter effects are more consistent with customer preferred habitats than window dressing.

A computable general equilibrium (CGE) model is developed to evaluate some of the causes of deforestation in the Philippines. To quantify deforestation effects, the elasticities of various parameters of deforestation as identified in the literature are evaluated. The main conclusion derived is that the factors that have a relatively more direct influence on the level of harvest such as annual allowable cut would have a greater effect on deforestation rate than population growth and off-farm employment opportunities.

In this study, I examine the impact of changes in post-IPO corporate governance on firm performance. Changes in corporate governance affect firm performance in various ways. Some theories such as agency and resource dependence theories predict that fast-paced change in post-IPO corporate governance will enhance firm performance. Other theories such as the resource-based view offer the opposite prediction that slowpaced change is more beneficial for firm performance. I, therefore, develop competing hypotheses regarding the impact of change in post-IPO corporate governance on firm performance.
