The Rx For Electronic Health Care Records: Time, Not Incentives, Edward W. Wright
The Rx For Electronic Health Care Records: Time, Not Incentives, Edward W. Wright
Student Scholarship
Despite promotion as a national objective, information technology remains relatively underutilized in US healthcare. To better understand this reluctance by physicians to implement technology that will arguably improve the efficiency and effectiveness of American healthcare, we studied fifteen family medical practices - interviewing decision makers about the adoption of electronic health record systems. A resulting conceptual model provides a pragmatic explanation of the variables that influence adoption. Prior adoption theories that rely upon intention to use as a predictor of adoption proved inadequate to our purpose. These theories tend to ignore the decision to acquire technology--the heart of the EHR …
Change Leader Career Development: The Interplay Of Social Capital\, Sponsorship And Self Identity During Planned Organizational Change, Zara F. Larsen
Change Leader Career Development: The Interplay Of Social Capital\, Sponsorship And Self Identity During Planned Organizational Change, Zara F. Larsen
Student Scholarship
This paper describes how in absence of strong sponsorship and often regardless of project outcome\, leaders of high impact corporate change initiatives must simultaneously develop bonding social capital to become sustainable members of the enterprise’s leadership team. This particularly holds for executives brought in from outside the firm to lead change. We present the findings of a qualitative research study of 42 projects led by 30 executive leaders from a diverse portfolio of primarily manufacturing companies\, leaders who were either Insiders (those established within their firms) or Outsiders (leaders brought in as fulltime employees from outside the firm specifically to …
Collaboration Between Competitive Firms In The Upstream Oil Industry: The Effect Of Operational Control On Valve Creation, Arun K. Sharma
Collaboration Between Competitive Firms In The Upstream Oil Industry: The Effect Of Operational Control On Valve Creation, Arun K. Sharma
Student Scholarship
In this study I investigate the relationships between oil company competitors as they collaborate to develop mutually owned oil-field projects. Using fundamental theoretical principles derived from Transaction Cost Theory and Property Rights Theory\, I have analyzed fourteen interviews with oil company leaders in an attempt to better explain partnership behavior. The typical oil-field partnership governance model (the Joint Operating Agreement – or JOA) is designed to minimize transaction costs and equitably distribute profit in accordance with Transaction Cost Theory. Property Rights Theory\, however\, more accurately describes JOA partner behavior by accounting for residual rights of control\, which are a more …
Collaboration And Competition Tensions In Multi-Unit Organizations Facing Volatile Business Environments, Baldev Singh
Collaboration And Competition Tensions In Multi-Unit Organizations Facing Volatile Business Environments, Baldev Singh
Student Scholarship
Today’s volatile business environment with unpredictable and shifting customer demands is forcing units within the hierarchy of the organization to respond collectively. But these very units are in competition for corporate support and resources in pursuit of their own interests – expand\, enhance their position\, and ensure differentiation – or their conception of the organization’s interest. This research explores the tensions among inter-unit competition and collaboration and the collective ability of the units to effectively cope with shifting demands of turbulent business environment while optimizing the overall organizational performance. The research findings extend our understanding of collaboration beyond mutual gains\, …
Silence Please: The Case For Cell Phone Rejection, Nina Aversano
Silence Please: The Case For Cell Phone Rejection, Nina Aversano
Student Scholarship
Cell phone density in G8 countries ranges between 80 and 90 percent – except in the US where some 35 % of Americans have failed to adopt the technology. The relative reluctance of US consumers to embrace cellular technology is puzzling given that the barriers for use appear to be low and the benefits high. If rejection was the simple inverse of adoption, we would expect people to reject cellular telephony based on negative evaluations of usefulness and ease of use, dominant constructs in technology acceptance models. This research suggests, however, that barriers to cell phone rejection transcend those traditionally …

Social Change - Making The Improbable Possible Through Collaboration: Barriers And Enablers To Ngos Working Together In South Africa To Tackle Hiv/Aids, Jane Cooke-Lauder
Student Scholarship
Three intersecting trends create an interesting arena for this study – collaboration is increasingly being portrayed as the way to solve wicked problems at a time when significant cross-border social issues are ever more pressing and when the number and level of activity of Non Government Organizations (NGOs) is on the increase. The result is a world where NGOs are working together differently, more collaboratively, to address these intractable social issues. But results indicate that their collaboration efforts are not always successful. This study was based on interviews conducted with 19 leaders of NGOs working collaboratively to tackle the HIV/AIDS …
Social Entrepreneurship: Pattern-Changing Entrepreneurs And The Scaling Of Social Impact, David A. Sherman
Social Entrepreneurship: Pattern-Changing Entrepreneurs And The Scaling Of Social Impact, David A. Sherman
Student Scholarship
This paper presents findings from an investigation of pattern-changing social entrepreneurs. We examined the efforts of fifteen entrepreneurs and sought to understand the factors that enable successful ones to scale their social impact. All the entrepreneurs were operating in capital constrained environments and scaling required overcoming funding constraints. The findings indicate that pattern-changing social entrepreneurs are more concerned with scaling their impact than with growing their enterprises. Hence, many were pursuing both direct scaling where they grew their own enterprises and indirect scaling where they pursued impact through influencing other organizations. Social entrepreneurship is not a linear process; rather it …
Barriers And Enablers Of A Successful Transition To Nurse Manager, Pamela C. Hudson
Barriers And Enablers Of A Successful Transition To Nurse Manager, Pamela C. Hudson
Student Scholarship
The transition from staff nurse to nurse leader is a natural promotional pathway in a nursing career. Yet seldom are staff nurses who are promoted to management prepared--either practically or psychologically--for the job. This study, based on semi-structured qualitative interviews with 13 nurse leaders, describes from their perspectives, the perils of ill-prepared promotion to management. Our findings suggest that nurse leaders often "do" management but continue to "be" nurses. The schism between doing and being, as seen in previous research in other contexts, impacts nurse leader's attitude, job satisfaction and performance. In an era where the nurse leader is seen …
"Retained Equity": Understanding The Impact Of Self Service Technology On Brand Trust Within The Context Of Financial Aid Administration, Matthew J. Gymer
"Retained Equity": Understanding The Impact Of Self Service Technology On Brand Trust Within The Context Of Financial Aid Administration, Matthew J. Gymer
Student Scholarship
Investment in self service technology (SST) is transforming the customer service encounter in virtually all industry sectors, pushing interpersonal service to a more automated and self initiated process. While firms are more familiar with operational implementation and customer acceptance factors of SST, there is much to learn concerning the cumulative implications of shifting customers from an interpersonal to a SST based service encounter. Of particular importance is what happens to trust between student and school the more students use self service technology to meet their financial aid service requests. Two groups of undergraduate students – some predisposed to SST based …
A Qualitative Study Of Employee Self-Limiting Behaviors In Non-Dominant Culture Organizations, Monika L. Hudson
A Qualitative Study Of Employee Self-Limiting Behaviors In Non-Dominant Culture Organizations, Monika L. Hudson
Student Scholarship
In this qualitative research paper, social/ethnic identity (Tajfel & Turner, 1979; Berry, 1993) and relative deprivation theories (Dion, 2001) and their application to organizational identity are used to look at “self-limiting” behaviors – conscious or unconscious acts of non- cooperation and/or lower work effort (Metayer, 2003). The intent is to identify how management practice can be improved by better understanding the derivation and reasons for these behaviors in one type of non-dominant culture workplace – organizations where African Americans constitute the majority of the employee base. Among the major findings of this segment of the research is that while managers …

Regional Headquarters Schemes By China’S Ministry Of Commerce And The Shanghai Municipal Government: Differences, Limitations, And Possible Combinations, Benjamin Kroymann
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
[Excerpt] "As large multinational companies (“MNCs”) are continuously extending their Chinese market presence, many are considering moving their Asian-Pacific Headquarters to China. In an attempt to attract MNCs’ Regional Headquarters to Mainland China, the Chinese central government is not only faced with competition from regional hubs, such as Singapore and Hong Kong, but also from internal rivals, such as the Shanghai and Beijing municipal governments.
This article analyzes recently passed regulations on the establishment of Regional Headquarters by MNCs in China at the national and the municipal level. The focus will be on Shanghai’s set of regulations, issued in 2002 …
Relationship Between Guest Perceptions Of Service Quality And Customer Loyalty In The Hotel Industry In South Florida, Chen-Hsien Lin
Relationship Between Guest Perceptions Of Service Quality And Customer Loyalty In The Hotel Industry In South Florida, Chen-Hsien Lin
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
The chief goal hotels strive to accomplish is to satisfy and retain their customers. Previous research showed that contented hotel guests are more likely to revisit a hotel than guests who were somehow dissatisfied (Schall, 2003). South Florida is one of the most attractive destinations in the U.S. for tourists. The hotel industry in South Florida has grown rapidly in recent years to serve the increasing number of tourists. However, studies regarding the hotel industry in South Florida are limited. This study attempted to scrutinize and investigate the relationship between service quality and customer loyalty in the hotel industry in …

Performance Evaluation Models For Strategic Decision-Making: Towards A Hybrid Model, Geraldina Villalobos Quezada
Performance Evaluation Models For Strategic Decision-Making: Towards A Hybrid Model, Geraldina Villalobos Quezada
Dissertations
Performance management systems serve strategic, administrative, and developmental purposes; therefore, their role in an organization cannot be overestimated. As a function of this strategic role, different evaluation models have been developed and implemented by organizations: BSC, CIPP, TQM, Six Sigma, and AOP.
Following a review of current evaluation theory and practice models that focus on improving strategic decision-making in organizations, four research questions were developed that sought to identify the interrelationships, evaluation components, evaluation indicators, data collected to support the evaluation, evaluation implementation protocols, quantitative and qualitative analyses, outcomes, and critical factors of the BSC and CIPP models.

Grand Hyatt Hong Kong Training Academy: Achieving Business Results, Vida W. Chow
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The purpose of this study is to identify the essential elements, both tangible and intangible, of establishing a training academy at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong in order to achieve business objectives in a rapidly changing and competitive global environment in the hospitality industry. With the phenomenal growth of the tourism industry in Hong Kong, Macau, and the neighboring area in China, there is a growing competition in acquiring, retaining, and developing talents in the labor market. Having a well-established training academy is not only critical in consistently delivering the brand promises to the external customers, it is also fundamental …

Examining The Relationship Between Employer Knowledge Dimensions And Organizational Attractiveness: An Application In A Military Context, Filip Lievens, Greet Van Hoye, Bert Schreurs
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This study uses Cable and Turban's (2001) employer knowledge framework as a conceptual model to formulate hypotheses about a broad range of possible factors affecting the attractiveness of an organization (i.e. armed forces) among potential applicants (576 high-school seniors). Results show that gender, familiarity with military organizations, perceptions of job and organizational attributes (task diversity and social/team activities), and trait inferences (excitement, prestige, and cheerfulness) explained potential applicants' attraction to military organizations. Relative importance analyses showed that trait inferences contributed most to the variance, followed by job and organizational attributes, and employer familiarity. Finally, we found some evidence of interactions …

Retest Effects In Operational Selection Settings: Development And Test Of A Framework, Filip Lievens, Tine Buyse, Paul R. Sackett
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This study proposes a framework for examining the effects of retaking tests in operational selection settings. A central feature of this framework is the distinction between within-person and between-person retest effects. This framework is used to develop hypotheses about retest effects for exemplars of 3 types of tests (knowledge tests, cognitive ability tests, and situational judgment tests) and to test these hypotheses in a high stakes selection setting (admission to medical studies in Belgium). Analyses of within-person retest effects showed that mean scores of repeat test takers were one-third of a standard deviation higher for the knowledge test and situational …
Consumer Preferences For High-Tech Product Forms: Converged Or Separate? Evolution Of Technology & Reversal Of Preferences, Jin K. Han, Seh-Woong Chung, Seok Sohn Yong
Consumer Preferences For High-Tech Product Forms: Converged Or Separate? Evolution Of Technology & Reversal Of Preferences, Jin K. Han, Seh-Woong Chung, Seok Sohn Yong
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
With the surging popularity and growing availability of convergence products (e.g., camera phones, all-in-one PDAs) in high-tech product categories, consumers now face another dilemma in their purchase consideration: which product form converged, stand-alone, or both? This study sets out to investigate pattern(s) of consumer preferences for product form along the evolution of technology trajectories. In two experiments, we find that, at low levels of technological performance, consumers show an overwhelming preference for the converged product form over the dedicated counterpart; whereas, at a higher technological performance level, the pattern of preferences is reversed. Furthermore, we observe that a preannouncement of …
Determinants Of Intra-Day Stock Price Change And Asymmetric Information, Christopher Hian Ann Ting
Determinants Of Intra-Day Stock Price Change And Asymmetric Information, Christopher Hian Ann Ting
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This paper presents a synthesized model of asymmetric information. An empirical analysis of more than 1,400 NYSE common stocks shows that trade direction is more important than volume in revealing the asymmetry. There is also evidence to suggest that signed duration reflects informed trading activity. We use the proposed measure of information asymmetry to study daily changes in the level of informed trading and find that earnings announcements narrow the information gap between the informed and the uninformed. On average, information asymmetry is largest at the beginning of the trading day and it decreases monotonically toward the closing bell. More …

Fostering Total Wellness Through Peer Helping: Reflections On The Smu Experiences, Gilbert Tan, Timothy Hsi
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Peer Helping is widely implemented in Colleges and Universities in the United States and Canada. Despite the popularity of these programs, very little has been researched on peer helping in the Asian context. This paper traces the theoretical foundations of peer helping and the nascent development of a peer helping program in the Singapore Management University and how this program has developed since the beginning of 2004. The initial focus of the program was based on the model of paraprofessional student counselors assisting their fellow peers through difficult moments in their lives. Over time, the program was fine-tuned to embrace …
Using Community Service Projects To Teach Leadership And Team-Building: Theoretical Foundations, Students' Reactions And Practical Considerations, Gilbert Tan
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This paper discusses the theoretical foundations of utilizing Community Service Project (CSP) or service-learning to teach Leadership and Team-Building. It examines the students’ reactions to this innovative method of instruction. This is done through conducting a content analysis of students’ learning journals, in which students reflect on their CSP learning experiences. Two themes emerged from the data: (a) variety of learning experiences, and (b) impact of CSP experience. The data suggested that students derived a variety of learning experiences from the CSP. In addition, there were attitudinal and learning impacts associated with the CSP experiences. The paper also outlines some …

E-Government Capabilities And Crisis Management: Lessons From Combating Sars In Singapore, Shan Ling Pan, Gary Pan, Paul R. Devadoss
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
The city-state of Singapore has been highly ranked for its e-government services. Over the past two decades, it has leveraged its IT infrastructure for economic development and transformed its public services. The SARS outbreak in 2004 turned into a national health crisis because it spread rapidly and the medical community had little knowledge of how to treat the new mutation of the corona virus. Yet, several Singaporean government agencies utilized the e-Government infrastructure and related resources to quickly bring the outbreak under control. In particular, the government?s IT infrastructure streamlined communications, information exchange, and data flow, and significantly eased collaboration …

Resource-Based View Of Knowledge Management For Competitive Advantage, Leila A. Halawi, Jay E. Aronson, Richard V. Mccarthy
Publications
We are not only in a new millennium, but also in a new era: the knowledge era. Sustainable competitive advantage is dependent on building and exploiting core competencies. The resource-based view (RBV) of the firm defines a strategic asset as one that is rare, valuable, imperfectly imitiable and non-substitutable. Knowledge is seen as a strategic asset with the potential to be a source of competitive advantage for an organization. In this paper, we provide a model that examines how and why knowledge management (KM) can be sued to create competitive advantage from the RBV of the firm.
