Reliance on mutual funds is vast and continues expanding with more than half of all U.S. households collectively investing $7 trillion in fund assets. During the 1990s, frequently encountered shareholder confusion prompted SEC mandated Plain English disclosure revision to clarify risks and costs. Despite comprehensive changes in 1998, consumers continue investing billions in consistently underperforming high fee funds pushing 2004 fees to nearly $68 billion. Two competing causal theories from the literature center on consumer rationality. Either disclosure of critical selection attributes is transparent and consumers behave irrationally, or rational consumers are not given information necessary for advantageous behavior. Isolating …

Institutional theory is explored as a way of explaining Section 404 first year experiences as the constituents set about to socially construct the law that regulates them. The normative pressure from the professional network of consultants emerges as most influential. By examining the Section 404 process in this fashion, it focuses attention as to whether the external auditors, taking turns as consultants at their competitors' external audit clients, drove the Section 404 compliance process and in a manner that resulted in perceived protection for them but with less than optimal benefit for their clients. In 2005, most large cities in the United States--those with populations of 400,000 or more--find that the majority of their residents are persons of color (US Census, 2000). Various non-profit and/or public sector organizations try to serve these populations; often, these agencies will employ a preponderance of persons from the communities they are attempting to serve to assure that clients can have direct contact with people who "look, speak and act like them". This paper investigates the relationships between oil company competitors as they collaborate to develop and deploy new technologies within mutually owned oil-field development projects. Although the formal governance for these relationships is well defined, multiple informal managerial strategies are employed between partners to manage perceptions of potential opportunistic behavior. These perceptions and resulting managerial strategies may vary with the imbalance of operational control between partners. Thus, partners with less operational control may employ defensive strategies while those with greater control may leverage their power to seek short-term gain. Firm Ownership Structure And Intellectual Capital Disclosures, Stephen Firer, S. M. Williamson

The primary purpose of this study is to investigate the association between three ownership structure characteristics and voluntary intellectual capital (IC) disclosure practices. Data for this study is hand collected from the 2000 annual reports of 390 Singapore publicly traded firms. Empirical results indicate Singapore publicly traded firms more closely owned were less likely to voluntarily disclose IC related information than were those where executive directors had smaller holdings in the entity. Finally, findings indicate government linked corporations (GLCs) will likely make more voluntary IC disclosures than non-GLCs. Against the background of a rapidly changing business environment, the article examines the organisational change management behavior of the owner-managers of small and medium-sized enterprises in Singapore. The analysis of survey data is aimed at ascertain whether there are any differences between Chinese and English-educated small (Chinese) businessmen in terms of Change Management (CM), a dichotomy which is of great historical and politico-cultural significance in Singapore. Anderson et al. (1994) developed a model of the theory of quality management underlying the Deming management method; Anderson et al. (1995) tested that model using path analysis. They used data from an existing database collected from 41 manufacturing plants in the electronics, machinery, and transportation industries with 100 or more employees. In this study, which retests their model, data were gathered from over 100 manufacturing and service companies of all sizes across the US and Canada. The majority in the business valuation profession believe that the proper way to value a "pass through" entity is to tax affect the earnings. This may be the traditional understanding, but recent court cases such as Estate of Walter L. Gross suggest that tax affecting may not be valid. The focus of this paper is to analyze the arguments presented by valuation experts in the Tax Court for and against tax affecting the earnings of a pass through entities.

The process through which entrepreneurial firms plan and achieve strategic growth and innovation often reflects a complex set of internal organizational challenges and opportunities. This paper specifically focuses on how entrepreneurs build internal cultures in order to stimulate and drive innovation and improve organizational effectiveness. Drawing upon both strategic-management and entrepreneurial-dynamics perspectives, the authors argue that sustained innovation requires moving beyond the characteristics of the entrepreneur towards an organization that will support a firm's growth by eliciting and directing additive contributions from the individuals working for these ventures. Written language is the core of culture and central to marketing communications. The differences in language processing exhibited by Eastern/Western bilingual consumers are of great concern for global and multinational companies wishing to effectively promote their products through the Internet. Advergaming is a promotional method consisting of the delivery of advertising messages through electronic games. Despite recent scholarly interest, no previous research has compared brand memory across groups of bilinguals of different writing systems or scripts in the advergaming context.

This study seeks to inform multinational corporations as they integrate domestic and international affirmative action policies and strategies. Improvement of these abilities can have important implications for human resource management and organizational productivity outcomes. To increase our understanding of the international perspectives of affirmative action, we examine employee perceptions of the structure of affirmative action plans in the United States and India. The differences in affirmative action plans implemented in these countries as well as country cultural differences offer interesting backdrops for examining cross-country differences in employee perceptions of affirmative action.

A major development in 2004 was the launch of a CEE-sponsored "Teaching Innovations Program" (TIP) for faculty members in economics. It is funded by a $675,000 grant over five years from the National Science Foundation and is co-directed by William Walstad and Michael Salemi. It has three phases for faculty participation. This paper finds a decreasing relationship between daytime trading in previous-day US equity markets and the Japanese market performance in the current period. On the other hand, the connection has increased between current US equity markets and current, after-hour Japanese markets. These changes have corrected a previous violation of the efficient market hypothesis, and suggest that as internet trading has increased volumes of off-hour trading, the Japanese equity markets have been better able to digest information from current US markets.

The dissertation empirically examines whether the internal corporate governance mechanisms of the firms represented in Latin American equity markets lead to the expropriation of minority shareholders' rights; and whether such expropriation leads to economic underperformance. Specifically, the dissertation answers the following: Is there a relationship between the board of director's characteristics and the expropriation of minority shareholders rights in Latin American firms? Is there a relationship between the ownership structure of Latin American firms and the expropriation of minority shareholders rights? This is an exploratory study about charitable gambling in Nevada. In the 1990 General Election, the voters of Nevada passed Question 2, which amended the Nevada State Constitution to allow lotteries to be operated by charitable organizations for fundraising purposes.1 Up to this point in time, lotteries of all kinds were banned by the Nevada Constitution since its passage in 1864, during Nevada’s first legislative session. Following the 1990 General Election, the Nevada Legislature approved Assembly Bill (A.B.) 449 in 1991 which enacted by statute the parameters for operating a charitable lottery.
