Effects Of Antismoking Advertising-Based Beliefs On Adult Smokers’ Consideration Of Quitting, Richard G. Netemeyer, J. Craig Andrews, Scot Burton Jun 2005

Effects Of Antismoking Advertising-Based Beliefs On Adult Smokers’ Consideration Of Quitting, Richard G. Netemeyer, J. Craig Andrews, Scot Burton

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

Objectives. We examined whether specific antismoking advertising–based beliefs regarding the addictiveness of smoking, the dangers of environmental tobacco smoke, and the tobacco industry’s use of deceptive advertising practices are associated with adult smokers’ consideration of quitting. We also assessed whether interactions between such beliefs and having children living in the home were associated with consideration of quitting. Methods. We used analyses of smokers’ responses to a telephone survey conducted after completion of the Wisconsin Anti-Tobacco Media Campaign to test hypotheses associated with our study objectives. Results. Results indicated that advertising-based beliefs regarding smoking addictiveness and the dangers of environmental …

Tactical Asset Allocation And Presidential Elections, James L. Grant, Emery A. Trahan Jun 2005

Tactical Asset Allocation And Presidential Elections, James L. Grant, Emery A. Trahan

Financial Services Forum Publications

We analyze tactical asset allocation decisions around presidential elections using traditional methodology and then in the context of an efficient frontier analysis rather than the traditional stock-only or bond-only allocations in prior literature. To our knowledge, this is the first paper in the literature that addresses asset returns around presidential elections in a mean-variance efficient frontier framework. We find that the efficient frontier is sensitive to presidential time periods, with Democrats providing the best risk-reward opportunities over the long term, while Republicans provide better opportunities over the past quarter century.

A Dynamic Look At Subprime Loan Performance, Michelle A. Danis, Anthony Pennington-Cross Jun 2005

A Dynamic Look At Subprime Loan Performance, Michelle A. Danis, Anthony Pennington-Cross

Finance Faculty Research and Publications

Does delinquency have any predictive power for the future performance of a mortgage? Analysis of a sample of subprime mortgages from the Loanperformance database on securitized private-label pool collateral using a two-step estimation procedure to control for the endogeneity of delinquency reveals strong support for the distressed prepayment theory that very delinquent loans are more likely to prepay than to default and that prepayment rates increase substantially as delinquency intensity increases. While delinquency leads predominantly to termination of a loan through prepayment, negative equity leads to termination through default. Does delinquency have any predictive power for the future performance of …

Cpas' Perceptions Of The Impact Of Sas 99, Donald C. Marczewski, Michael D. Akers Jun 2005

Cpas' Perceptions Of The Impact Of Sas 99, Donald C. Marczewski, Michael D. Akers

Accounting Faculty Research and Publications

In November 2002, the Auditing Standards Board (ASB) issued Statement on Auditing Standard 99, Consideration of Fraud in a Financial Statement Audit. Although SAS 99 was developed before the recent accounting scandals, its release came in their wake. The ASB crafted SAS 99 in response to perceived inadequacies in its predecessor, SAS 82. A questionnaire was sent to a random sample of 300 Wisconsin CPAs selected from the membership of the Wisconsin Institute of CPAs, which included 150 partners and 150 managers from Wisconsin public accounting firms. The response rate was 35%, with an almost equal balance of partners and …

Credit Cards As Lifestyle Facilitators, Matthew J. Bernthal, David Crockett, Randall L. Rose Jun 2005

Credit Cards As Lifestyle Facilitators, Matthew J. Bernthal, David Crockett, Randall L. Rose

Faculty Publications

Credit cards are an increasingly essential technology, but they carry with them the paradoxical capacity to propel consumers along lifestyle trajectories of marketplace freedom or constraint. We analyze accounts provided by consumers, credit counselors, and participants in a credit counseling seminar in order to develop a differentiated theory of lifestyle facilitation through credit card practice. The skills and tastes expressed by credit card practice help distinguish between the lifestyles of those with higher cultural capital relative to those with lower cultural capital. Differences in lifestyle regulation practice are posited to originate in cultural discourses related to entitlement and frugality.

Optimal Insurance Brokerage Commission, Arthur Hau Jun 2005

Optimal Insurance Brokerage Commission, Arthur Hau

Hong Kong Institute of Business Studies Working Paper Series

This paper studies a principal-agent insurance brokerage problem with a risk-averse principal (an insured) and a risk-neutral agent(a broker). The concept of “mean-preserving spread-reducing effort” is introduced to delineate the broker's activities. Using the first-order approach, it is shown that under some common conditions, the insured may “concavify” the reward function to induce the risk-neutral agent to exert MPSR brokering effort. Surprisingly, these conditions together with an additional condition guarantee the validity of the first-order approach even when the monotone likelihood ratio condition (used exclusively to justify the first-order approach) is violated. The case with a risk-averse agent is also …

"Retained Equity": Understanding The Impact Of Self Service Technology On Brand Trust Within The Context Of Financial Aid Administration, Matthew J. Gymer Jun 2005

"Retained Equity": Understanding The Impact Of Self Service Technology On Brand Trust Within The Context Of Financial Aid Administration, Matthew J. Gymer

Student Scholarship

There is little research in service literature that provides a contextual framework for understanding the impact of web-based self service technology on brand trust. Of particular importance is what happens to trust between customer and firm the more customers use self service technology to meet their service requests? The author synthesizes service encounter and brand trust variables to construct a contingency framework useful for effective resource allocation. From a customer perspective, this longitudinal study will integrate the variables that shape student use of web-based self service technology and the variables that define brand trust. Within higher education administration, service encounter …

Interaction Of Technology Choice And Financial Risk Management Under Costly External Financing, Onur Boyabatli, L. Beril Toktay Jun 2005

Interaction Of Technology Choice And Financial Risk Management Under Costly External Financing, Onur Boyabatli, L. Beril Toktay

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper analyzes the integrated operational and financial risk management portfolio of a firm that determines whether to use flexible or dedicated technology and whether to undertake financial risk management or not. The risk management value of flexible technology is due to its risk pooling benefit under demand uncertainty. The financial risk management motivation comes from the existence of deadweight costs of external financing due to capital market imperfections. Financial risk management has a fixed cost, while technology investment incurs both fixed and variable costs. The firm's limited budget, which depends partly on a tradable asset, can be increased by …

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act Of 2002 And Its Effects On American Business, Lara Bergen Jun 2005

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act Of 2002 And Its Effects On American Business, Lara Bergen

Financial Services Forum Publications

In the wake of the 2001-2002 Arthur Andersen accounting scandal and collapse of Enron and WorldCom, the government, the investors and the American public demanded corporate reforms to prevent similar future occurrences. Viewed to be largely a result of failed or poor governance, insufficient disclosure practices, and a lack of satisfactory internal controls, in 2002 Congress passed the Sarbanes-Oxley Act seeking to set standards and guarantee the accuracy of financial reports.

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act (known as SARBOX or SOX) sought to address these concerns through making executives responsible for company accounting statements, redefining the relationships between corporations and their auditors, …

Privatization Slow-Down: Government Reluctance Or Economic Failure?, Sara Alam El-Din Jun 2005

Privatization Slow-Down: Government Reluctance Or Economic Failure?, Sara Alam El-Din

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This research is trying to disclose the reasons behind the slow down of the privatization program in Egypt. It does so by assessing the government's policy with regard to privatization by reference to secondary material and two case studies: the banking and the maritime sectors. These two case studies were carefully chosen in order to highlight particular issues related to the slow down of the process of privatization and the government's policies. The banking sector, for example, is one of the sectors that the government seems reluctant to privatize and only last January did the government announce the willingness to …

International Development Donors And Non-Governmental Organizations: "An Exploratory Pilot Study For The Relationship Dynamics Within The Egyptian Development Context", Dalia Salah El-Noury

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This thesis attempts to explore the relationship, both real and perceived, between international development donors and NGOs within the Egyptian development context, and examines how the relation affects development work. The interaction with governmental organizations, and how these influence the relationship is also reflected in this study. The research traces the evolution of development theories and foreign aid prior to examining foreign aid in the local Egyptian context and the NGOs working environment.

This research fieldwork was conducted through semi structured interviews and a formal questionnaire, though only a part of the sample answered the questionnaire, on two foreign donors …

Combining Equity And The Precautionary Principle: Examples Drawn From Hog Production In Poland, F. Gregory Hayden Jun 2005

Combining Equity And The Precautionary Principle: Examples Drawn From Hog Production In Poland, F. Gregory Hayden

College of Business: Faculty Publications

Equity criteria are one set of efficiency criteria crucial for evaluating and judging production institutions and processes. Efficiency means the ability to produce a desired effect. Before efficiency can be determined, criteria must be established with regard to what is desirable. Equity—that is, fairness and justice - is one of the effects desired from production processes. Thus, (1) by definition, equity and efficiency cannot be separated. (2) Neither can they be separated in real-world production processes. If, for example, the loss of workers’ respiratory health due to work in a hog production facility is considered unfair and unjust treatment of …

A Two-Stage Realized Volatility Approach To The Estimation For Diffusion Processes From Discrete Observations, Peter C. B. Phillips, Jun Yu Jun 2005

A Two-Stage Realized Volatility Approach To The Estimation For Diffusion Processes From Discrete Observations, Peter C. B. Phillips, Jun Yu

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper motivates and introduces a two-stage method for estimating diffusion processes based on discretely sampled observations. In the first stage we make use of the feasible central limit theory for realized volatility, as recently developed in Barndorff-Nielsen and Shephard (2002), to provide a regression model for estimating the parameters in the diffusion function. In the second stage the in-fill likelihood function is derived by means of the Girsanov theorem and then used to estimate the parameters in the drift function. Consistency and asymptotic distribution theory for these estimates are established in various contexts. The finite sample performance of the …

Jackknifing Bond Option Prices, Peter C. B. Phillips, Jun Yu Jun 2005

Jackknifing Bond Option Prices, Peter C. B. Phillips, Jun Yu

Research Collection School Of Economics

Prices of interest rate derivative securities depend crucially on the mean reversion parameters of the underlying diffusions. These parameters are subject to estimation bias when standard methods are used. The estimation bias can be substantial even in very large samples and much more serious than the discretization bias, and it translates into a bias in pricing bond options and other derivative securities that is important in practical work. This article proposes a very general and computationally inexpensive method of bias reduction that is based on Quenouille's (1956; Biometrika, 43, 353-360) jackknife. We show how the method can be applied directly …

Seek Ways To Minimize The Mushrooming Alternative Minimum Tax, James Trebby, George Kutner Jun 2005

Seek Ways To Minimize The Mushrooming Alternative Minimum Tax, James Trebby, George Kutner

Accounting Faculty Research and Publications

The alternative minimum tax (AMT) is reaching a broader segment of individuals. Yet, many of these taxpayers are not aware of the implications of this tax. Even worse, some of their tax advisors are not as informed as they should be. By identifying items that trigger the individual AMT, taxpayers and their advisors have greater opportunities to develop strategies to avoid the special tax. The AMT is essentially a parallel tax system that involves a separate tax calculation from the regular income tax. The AMT calculation is then compared to the income tax figured under the normal manner. The taxpayer …

Recent Monetary Policy In The U.S.: Risk Management Of Asset Bubbles, Anastasios G. Malliaris, Marc D. Hayford Jun 2005

Recent Monetary Policy In The U.S.: Risk Management Of Asset Bubbles, Anastasios G. Malliaris, Marc D. Hayford

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Recently Chairman Greenspan (2003 and 2004) has discussed a risk management approach to the implementation of monetary policy. This paper explores the economic environment of the 1990s and the policy dilemmas the Fed faced given the stock boom from the mid to late 1990s to after the bust in 2000-2001. Drawing on Greenspan's comments about conducting monetary policy in the real world of risk and uncertainty, the paper assesses why US monetary policy was neutral with respect to the stock market boom.
